His Contributions to the Community
Awakened
"Sleeping
Giant" during the First Quarter Storm:
He designed and implemented the
political process and organization structure that awakened the 60,000 students
of the University of the East, the so-called "Sleeping Giant". Its population
was huge and was walking distance to Malacañang Palace. It was this awakened
Student Power during the First Quarter Storm that rallied to Malacañang during
the 1st Battle of Mendiola during the upheaval in 1970 against the rising
dictatorship and abuses of the Marcos regime. This initiative stopped tuition
fee increases and brought forth other benefits from the University like free
hospitalization for students.
Advised student demonstration:
Advised the
students of Magsaysay Memorial College in San Narciso, Zambales during a student
demonstration against tuition fee increases and other reforms. They won the
battle against the greedy friars.
Revitalized Movement:
Revitalized the Cursillo
Movement Chapter in St. Joseph Church, Quezon City. As President, increased
membership by 5,000%.
Outstanding Student Leader:
As President of the
Management Association of the University of the East (MAUE), made the record of
40 successful projects in one year and won the Most Outstanding Organization
Award and Most Outstanding Student Leader Award for two years. This was the
golden years of MAUE, never to be repeated again. An example was set of how to
make an organization outstanding.
Triggered Anti-Fiesta Movement:
Staged an
Anti-Fiesta Movement that changed forever the celebration of Fiesta in St.
Joseph Church, Quirino District, Quezon City, and became an example to other
towns and provinces. His group asked the parishioners to sign a petition to
concentrate the celebration in Church. The lavish and overcrowded fiesta
displays and squandering came to an abrupt halt.
Spread Community Mass in Metro
Manila:
During the olden days, Masses in Churches in the Philippines were said
in Latin which the people did not understand. When it was allowed to have the
Mass in English and Filipino, He saw to it that all the Masses in St. Joseph
Parish, Quezon City are said in English and that the congregation participated
in the liturgy and singing. He also taught the leaders in San Francisco del
Monte and Pandacan.
Revived Community Centre issue:
Every Filipino in Metro
Toronto dreams of a Community Centre. For 30 years, different groups tried but
failed to build the centre. With his writings and strategies, the issue was
revived. Today, no less than 3 groups are working to realize the dream. He was
Chairman of the Publicity and Marketing of the Filipino Centre, Toronto until 30
December 2001.
Promoted Multiculturalism:
The Asian Connection that he founded
was a social club where Canadians and Orientals mingled. The Club promoted
inter-marriage. Hundreds of happy couples and beautiful children with Eurasian
mixture resulted in this. Hundreds of Filipinas were able to come to Canada also
because of this.
Promoted unity:
With his book, "In Search of a Future, The
Struggle of Immigrants", my column "Thinking Aloud" and other writings,
he helped developed unity among Filipinos overseas.
Promoted largest gather of
Filipinos:
Handled the Marketing & Promotions of the Philippine Centennial
Festival at the SkyDome. This is the largest gathering of Filipinos overseas
with 35,000 in attendance. It also made a gross profit of $550,000. Many said it
was impossible but was achieved. It brought pride to Filipino-Canadians and they
regained faith in themselves. It was his innovative and aggressive marketing
strategies that encouraged the community to join.
Improved Productivity:
Published a study of McDonnell Douglas Final Production Process that drastically
changed the production methods and procedures in those areas saving millions of
dollars for the Company.
