Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 5 and I’ve become a famous idol pop singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m her number one fan, Hazel!”

Justin: “And I’m Justin, her other number one fan.”

Melanie: “Hey, guess what!  My first CD, ‘My Heart’, my debut maxi single, has been released to music fans everywhere!”

Hazel: “Aaaaaahhhhh!  Melanie, that’s so awesome!  I can’t wait to get a copy of your first CD!”

Justin: “Hazel, you already have a copy, and I have one, too.”

Hazel: “Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, but I think it would be cool if we had lots of copies to give out to special people, because we’re Starry~en~Luv’s best friends, you know.”

Justin: “Hmmm, you know, that’s not a bad idea.”

Melanie: “Okay, that’s good.  You’ll both get lots of copies.”

Hazel: “Great!  Thanks a lot!”

Justin: “That was really something last time.  And another cool thing about that time was when your best friends from Ottawa came over just to see you.”

Melanie: “Oh, yeah, they were there, too!  I was so happy to see them again!  I missed them so much.  They were at the autograph session, and our classmates were there, too.  It was so wonderful!”

Hazel: “Yeah, that’s really cool.  But, you know, I thought I saw someone at the store where they sold your CD’s.  I thought I saw someone that shouldn’t be there.”

Justin: “Really?  Who was it?”

Hazel: “I’m not sure if I was right.  You know what…never mind.  Don’t worry about it.”

Melanie: “It’s time for Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

It was evening and Melanie was soaking in a luxurious bubble bath while she was reading a book.  She always liked to have a nice bubble bath once or twice a week and it was extremely relaxing for her.  A great time to have that would be in the weekend as well, and right now it was Sunday night.  Melanie’s cell phone began to ring and she was startled.  She got out of her bathtub and put on a towel and she rushed to her cell phone which was sitting on her folded night clothes that was on a small chair.

“Please wait!” said Melanie, as she was about to reach for the cell phone, but it stopped ringing.  She was too late in answering it.  She sighed and she looked at the display on the front and she saw Christina Lane’s name.  She was the one who was calling.  “I was too late…” she said softly.  Then suddenly, the phone rang again, and she was startled.  It was a different kind of ring, the kind that told her that there was a voice mail message.

Melanie looked for Christina’s name in the phone directory that was in the cell phone and she found her name and decided to call her back.

Christina was about to sip a cup of tea while she was sitting in a room at her place that she made into an office.  She lived in a nice and luxurious condominium several floors above the ground.  She was about to sip her cup of tea when she very painfully realized it was too hot!

Aaaaaahhhhh!  Hot!  Hot!  Hot!” she cried out.  She put the cup down on her desk and she was covering her mouth and almost whined like a little girl who was pouting.  “My tea is too hot…” she whispered, like a very sad little girl.

Then her cell phone began to ring.  She looked at her cell phone and saw Melanie’s name and she smiled.  She felt better already.  She answered it.

“Hi, Melanie!” she said cheerfully, and then felt that her tongue was feeling a little raw.  “Ouch…”

Melanie smiled as she spoke on the phone.  “Hi, Christina!” she said cheerfully.  “You called me just a little bit earlier?”

“Oh, yeah, that’s right,” said Christina, but she still nursing her slightly burned tongue.  “Ouch…”

Melanie was puzzled.  “Are you okay?”

“My tea was too hot when I drank it,” Christina said with a pout.

Melanie giggled.  “Oh, okay.  You don’t drink it right away.  You’re not supposed to.”

“Yeah, I know, I learned that the hard way a minute ago.”

“Oh, okay.  What did you call me for?”

Christina came back to her normal cheerful self.  “Oh, yeah, I was calling you earlier, and I wanted to tell you about this really hot job we’re doing.  I think it’s about time, too.  The time is perfect for it!  I think you should go for it!”

      “What is it?” Melanie asked.

      “It’s your first television appearance!”

Melanie gasped when she heard that through her cell phone.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 25: I’m so excited!  I’m going to be on TV!

Melanie let out a high-pitched scream!  It made Grandma rush out of her room that was across the hallway to see if Melanie was alright in the bathroom.  She stopped at the bathroom door with a slightly alarmed look on her face and she knocked on the door hard.

“Melanie, are you alright?” Grandma shouted and she knocked on the door again.  “Melanie!”

The bathroom door opened and Grandma stood back.  Melanie looked like she was extremely happy and excited about something.  She was holding her cell phone in her hand and she held onto the towel that was wrapped around her.

“Grandma, you won’t believe it!  Christina called me and she said that I’m going to be on TV!” Melanie cried out very excitedly.

Grandma suddenly frowned and then she calmed herself and she sighed.  “Melanie, please do not scream in the bathroom.  You made me think that you might have hurt yourself,” she said.

      “I’m so sorry, Grandma.”

“Are you finished with the bathroom?”

Melanie looked back into the bathroom.  “Oh, I just have to clean up, that’s all.”

“Never mind, just go to your room and talk with Miss Lane.  I will take care of the bathroom.  I have to take my bath as well,” said Grandma.

“Oh, okay.  Thank you, Grandma.”  Melanie got her clothes from inside the bathroom and she walked out of it and went to her room.  When she closed the door, she continued to talk on her cell phone as she dropped her old clothes into the hamper.

“Are you in trouble?” asked Christina, through the cell phone.

Melanie smiled and shook her head.  “Oh, no, I’m not in trouble.  But I’m so excited!  Tell me more about it, please!”

“Okay.  Anyways, I’m sure you know about YTV, which is a major television network.  A lot of young people in Canada watch it, mostly kids and teenagers.  There’s a talk show there for teenagers and kids called ‘Friday Night Hangout’ and it’s hosted by Alicia Matthews.  Anyways, Alicia was so fired up by the hype over Starry~en~Luv that she canceled the show topic for this coming Friday and wanted to invite you for an interview instead.  She phoned Regal Records and she was directed to me.”

Melanie gasped with surprise.  “Oh, wow!  I’ve seen that show.  It’s about a half hour, I think.  A lot of my friends watch it because they think it’s really cool.  Sometimes I watch it, too.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet you watch it.  I watch it sometimes, too,” said Christina, and both she and Melanie started to laugh a little bit.  “Well, what do you think?  I think it would be really great if you went for it.  This is a great opportunity for you.”

Melanie smiled with great delight.  “Christina, I’ll do it!  Let’s go to YTV!”

Christina smiled, too.  “Great!  I’ll let her know that we’re going for it!  Thanks, Melanie!”

The phone conversation was finished.  Melanie was really excited about this!  She wanted to tell Hazel and Justin about it as well.  And she also wanted to tell Grandma more about it.  Of course, she thought she should tell Mr. Wilkins, too, because he helped her out a lot in the beginning to get to where she was now.  Melanie put her cell phone on her bed and she quickly changed into her night clothes.  Then she got out of her room and she went down the hallway to where Grandma Annabelle’s room was.  The door to her room was opened just slightly.  She knocked on the door softly.

“Come in, Melanie,” said Grandma, who was sitting up in her bed reading a book.

Melanie opened the door a little more and she looked into the room and she smiled.  “Grandma,” she said, and it was obvious that she wanted to tell Grandma more about what she was talking about with Christina on the phone earlier.

“So you’re going to be on TV, isn’t that right, Melanie?” asked Grandma.  Her face didn’t appear to have any expression.  She looked up at her.  “Come here and sit down.”

Melanie came into the room and she sat down on the bed beside Grandma.  She felt so much more comfortable now with Grandma.  It was totally unlike a few months ago, when she was so worried and afraid that she was doing something wrong without realizing it.  Of course, Grandma was still strict.  But, now, Melanie knew what was in Grandma’s heart, so she totally understood her.

“Christina called me and she said that someone on the YTV channel wants to have me on their Friday night talk show,” said Melanie, smiling brightly and speaking softly.

“That does sound quite exciting, child.  What is the show called?”

“It’s called ‘Friday Night Hangout’ and the hostess there is a lady named Alicia Matthews.  She’s really popular.  Sometimes, I watch her show on Friday nights and my friends watch it, too.  It’s really cool.”

Grandma was slightly taken aback by the young girl’s use of language.  “Cool?  You kids do have a way with words nowadays.  I suppose that means it’s a good show.”

Melanie nodded and smiled.  “Oh, yeah, my friends love it.”

“I see,” said Grandma.  “Well, then, on Friday night, I guess I’ll be watching that channel.  I want to see how you will do on your first television appearance.  This is your first television appearance, isn’t it?” she asked.

      “Yeah, it is,” said Melanie.

“That’s good.  But you must realize this is different from having a radio interview.  On the radio, you have to watch what you say.  On television, I’m sure it’s more than that.  You not only have to watch what you say, you also have to watch what you do.  People are listening to you and watching you at the same time, so it’s a little more complicated.”

Melanie giggled slightly.  “Oh, Grandma, I know that already.”

Grandma was slightly surprised again but she did not show it.  She did nod her head, however.  “I see.  Well, then, I guess you’ll do fine, Melanie.”

Melanie smiled cheerfully at her grandmother.  “Thank you, Grandma.”

And that’s when Grandma smiled slightly.

On Monday morning, Melanie came out of her house wearing her school uniform and her autumn coat.  She wore thin gloves as well because by now, it was late autumn and the weather was getting cold.  After all, it was early December.

She carried her school-issue suitcase at her side and she started to walk to school.  She was in high spirits this morning, too.  She saw a couple of squirrels in front of her and she stopped and waved at them.  They looked up at her and then their baby squirrels came and the squirrel family began to run to where they were going before.  Melanie giggled when she saw that.

Melanie passed by the property of John Wilkins and she stood at the front gate.  She was trying to see if Mr. Wilkins was working in his garden, but since the weather was getting colder, he probably wouldn’t be doing much for his garden right now.  Then, that’s when she saw him at the front door.

“Mr. Wilkins!” she called out and she waved at him.

Mr. Wilkins smiled as he walked from the front porch and towards the front gate.  He wore a light jacket.  “Melanie, you’re in a very good mood this morning,” he said to her.

Melanie smiled and giggled.  “Oh, yes, Mr. Wilkins.  How are you?”

“I’m fine, thanks.  But anyways, you’re in a very good mood and there’s definitely a good reason why, too, isn’t there?”

“Yes!  Do you want to guess what it is?”

“You’re appearing on the ‘Friday Night Hangout’ show on YTV with Alicia Matthews?”

Melanie gasped at that.  “Oh, my, how did you know?” she said with surprise.

Mr. Wilkins began to laugh.  “Melanie, don’t forget, I have contacts with Regal Records all the time.  I know what goes on in the company, so I know what happens to you while you’re there.”

“Oh, okay…” said Melanie, laughing as if she had just been caught doing something wrong.  “I hope you get to see it.  It’s going to be on Friday night and it’ll be at 8:00 pm.  It’s a half-hour show.”

“I’ll make sure to watch it, Melanie.”

Melanie smiled at him.  “Thank you, Mr. Wilkins.”

Melanie got to school.  She found Hazel and her little brother Lawrence waiting for her at the front steps of the school and both of them were also wearing their autumn coats.  Lawrence was blowing into the air slowly, fascinated by the fact that the slightly cold weather made his breath appear.

“Hazel, Lawrence!” Melanie called out as she reached the bottom of the steps.

“Hey there, Melanie,” Hazel called out with a big smile.

Melanie climbed the stairs and she reached them.  “Good morning.  It’s getting a little cold now, huh?” she asked them.

Hazel smiled.  “Yeah, but you know what, I like the summer better.”

“I think most people like the summer better.”

Hazel started to giggle at that.  “Oh, yeah, you’re right!”

      “Where’s Justin?”

“I guess he’s coming any minute now.  And I hope he’s bringing his cute little sister with him!  She’s just so cute!  I want to pinch her cheeks over and over again until they turn red and fall off!  She’s just so adorably cute!”

Melanie looked at her as if she was becoming very strange.  “Um, Hazel, I don’t think she would like that…” she said uncomfortably.

“Yeah, I know.  I can think about it, but I guess I can’t do it,” said Hazel, and she started to laugh in a slightly embarrassed way.  When she stopped laughing, she looked towards one direction and saw that Justin was on his way here and as usual, his little sister Helen was with him.  They both wore autumn coats to keep warm.

Melanie looked that way, too.  “Oh, here comes Justin and Helen.”

Justin and Helen were walking together, and Justin was holding Helen’s hand.  As they walked, they heard Hazel calling out to them.

“Justin!  Over here!” she called out.

Justin glanced down at Helen and smiled slightly.  “Come, Helen, let’s go!” he said.

Helen looked up and she nodded and smiled as well.  “Okay!” she said to him.  The two of them began to run, though not too fast.  Justin could run a lot faster than Helen, so he had to keep himself from going too fast.  They reached the bottom of the steps that led up to the school entrance and they met Hazel and Lawrence and Melanie there.

“Hey, you guys!  What’s up?” said Hazel, being very cheerful as usual.

Justin answered.  “Not much.  How are you three?” he asked, his voice as calm as usual.

“I’m fine, thank you,” Melanie said very sweetly.  “Oh, you know, now that all of you are here, there’s something I really need to tell you.”

Hazel and Justin were puzzled.  “What?  What is it?” asked Hazel.

“You know that show on YTV called ‘Friday Night Hangout’?  You guys watch that show, right?” Melanie asked.

“Sure, I do.  It’s really funny most of the time.  I almost never miss it,” Hazel answered.

“Yeah, it’s a pretty good show.  I watch it sometimes,” said Justin.  “What about it?”

“Well, it’s just that…on Friday night…I’m going to be in it.”

Hazel was totally shocked and she nearly screamed!  “What!  Are you saying you’re going to be on TV?  Is that what you’re saying?!”

Melanie giggled and smiled.  “Yes, that’s right.”

“That’s so cool!  I’m going to watch it!  I can’t miss it!”

“Melanie, that’s really cool.  I’ll make sure to watch it.  It’s going to be your first television appearance, right?” asked Justin.

“Yes.  I’ve never been on TV before.  I mean, not like that,” said Melanie.  “Christina told me about it last night.  She said that the hostess, her name is Alicia Matthews, wanted to interview me on her show.  And later today, I’m supposed go to the YTV station with Christina to meet with some people there, like Ms. Matthews.”

Hazel looked like she was in awe.  “Wow, that’s so awesome…” she whispered.  “You’re going to be meeting lots of people that we only get to see on TV.  Now you’ll see them in person.”

Melanie blushed at that.  “Oh, yeah, I’m…kind of nervous about it, too.”

“There’s no need to be nervous,” said Justin.  “Just treat it like your first live concert.  You were in front of a lot of people back then.  It’s the same thing when you’re on TV, I think.  We’ll be at home watching you.  Helen and I will watch you on TV.”  He glanced down at Helen, who was listening in on the conversation.  “Right, Helen?”

Helen smiled and she nodded.  “Yeah, we’ll watch you on TV!”

Melanie giggled and she knelt down in front of Helen.  “Thank you so much.  I hope you’ll enjoy it,” she said to the tiny little girl.

Helen giggled, too, and then she suddenly realized something.  “Oh, wait, I almost forgot about something.”  She was trying to reach into her coat pockets and then after a bit of struggling with it, she pulled out something and showed it to Melanie.  “Here!”

Hazel blinked her eyes a couple of times.  She was amazed and she smiled.  “Oh, wow.  That’s your CD, Melanie.”

“Justin got this for me.  It’s your new CD, right?” asked Helen, holding the CD case with her gloved hands gently as if she was holding something extremely precious.

Melanie smiled at her.  “Yes, that’s right.  Did you listen to my CD?”

“Yeah, and I loved it.  Your singing is so good.  Justin has one, too.  He gave me one.  And he gave one to everyone in our family.  But I wonder why he still has so many in his room.”

Justin nearly fell over, but he regained himself on time and kept the calm look on his face.  For a second there, he was really shocked, but nobody really noticed it.  “Helen, it’s just a few extra copies.  It’s only because we’re the best friends of Starry~en~Luv.  That’s why.”

Hazel eyed him suspiciously and with a mischievous smile.  “Right, sure, that’s what they say.”

Justin smiled a little more prominently than he usually did.  “Yeah, right.  Anyways, I’m taking Helen to her Kindergarten class.  I’ll see you later, okay?” he said.

Melanie was puzzled and Hazel still had the mischievous look on her face.  “Oh, okay, see you later, Justin,” said Melanie.

“See you later.”  Justin and Helen began to leave.

When they went inside the school building, Melanie turned to Hazel.  “Justin was acting strange for a second,” she said.

Hazel began to laugh.  “Yeah, that was really something.  I wonder what made it happen.”

Melanie thought for a moment.  “Was it because Helen said that he had a lot of copies of my CD in his room?” she asked.

“But we both do.  So, I’m not sure what’s strange about that.”

Melanie and Hazel looked like puzzled detectives for a few moments as they tried to think about it.  But after a while, they both decided that they couldn’t figure out anything about it.  It was a mystery that they couldn’t solve.

“Oh, well, never mind.  It’s too early in the morning to make my brain work like this,” said Hazel.

Melanie began to giggle.  “Oh, okay.  Let’s go to the playground now.  It’s still early.”

      “Yeah, let’s go.”

Melanie and Hazel left the front of the school and they went down the path that was at the side of the school, the path which led to the back of the school.

After school, Melanie was picked up from school by Christina in her car.  Melanie was still in her school clothes and placed her belongings in the back seat while she sat at the front as usual.  Christina wore her sunglasses and looked very cool as she was driving her car towards downtown.

“We’re almost there, Melanie.  How are you feeling?” asked Christina.

Melanie took a deep breath as she closed her eyes.  She looked up at Christina and she smiled slightly.  “I’m a little nervous.  It’s another first for me.  I’ve never been on TV like this before.”

“You really haven’t been on TV even though your dad is the Premiere?”

“Oh, about that, well, I don’t know if you can call that being on TV.  I think a few people saw me just a little bit on TV, like in the background somewhere.  But almost nobody would have noticed me,” said Melanie.

      “Oh, okay.”

“This time, it’s going to be really different.  It’s not my father who’s the TV cameras are on; it’s going to be me.  I’ve never had anything like that before.  I guess I’m a little bit nervous.”

Christina just smiled at her.  “It’s no big deal.  It’s something that comes to you eventually because now you’re a famous idol pop singer.  And I think those times when you did get caught by TV cameras with your father might have helped you.  You’re used to seeing TV cameras near you.”

      “Yeah, that’s it,” said Melanie.

“I thought so.  Cool!  Don’t worry about it.  It’ll be fun, I promise.”

Melanie smiled at her excitedly.  “I know it’ll be fun.”

When the car arrived at the television station of YTV, Christina parked the car in the parking lot and she and Melanie left the car and went to the front entrance.  They entered the building that was about the same size as Regal Records, close to 10 floors.  When they entered the building, Melanie was really in awe as she looked around.

“Oh, my, it’s so cool!” she said softly.  Melanie saw some familiar faces.  “Christina, look over there!  That’s the guy who shows up in the times between TV shows in the late afternoon.  He’s really cool!  And his friend is really cool.  There’s another person.  I wonder where she is.”

Christina was a little puzzled.  “Oh, um, yeah…”

“Look!  It’s that girl from the youth music awards show that I saw a few months ago.  Don’t you think she looks really cool?”  Melanie looked like she was totally star-struck.  Christina almost thought there were stars swirling around Melanie’s head.

“You can remember something like that from a few months ago?” asked Christina, looking very surprised.

“And there’s that guy who does the weather in the YTV news.  He’s really cute.  Don’t you think he’s really cute?  A lot of the girls in my class think he’s cute,” said Melanie, looking so star-struck.  She had become a star who had become star-struck by other stars.

Christina started to laugh in an uncomfortable way.  “Um, yeah, I guess you could say he’s cute.  He’s like only 16, I think,” she said.  She looked at her watch and saw that it was almost time for their appointment with Alicia Matthews.  “Hey, Melanie, we should get going soon.  I know you’re really star-struck right now, but remember, you’re one of them now.”

      There was no answer.

“Melanie?”  Christina turned and she saw that Melanie was no longer there and she nearly screamed with shock.  “Melanie!  Where the heck are you?”  Christina turned around and saw Melanie.

Melanie was standing near one of the famous hosts of one of the shows on YTV.  “Hi!  Excuse me.  Could I please have your autograph?  I mean, if it’s okay with you, that is.”

The young man looked slightly puzzled, but then he started to laugh.  “Oh, hey, no problem, kid.  What do you want me to sign on?”

Melanie whipped out her day planner.  “Here.  Could you please sign this for me?” she asked very politely and with stars glowing in her eyes in a rather comical way.

“Sure.”  The young host took the day planner and signed his autograph on the inside of the back cover.  “Here you go.  I hope you like it.”

Melanie gasped and looked at the signature.  “Oh, wow, that’s so cool!  Thank you so very much!”

“No problem.  Hey, you’re Starry~en~Luv, right?  It’s funny how you’re the one asking me for an autograph.  I should be asking you that.”

      “Really?” she asked.

“Yeah, it is,” he said and he laughed.  “But it’s cool.”

That’s when Christina came and took Melanie by the shoulders.  “Sorry about that, sir,” she said with a forced smile.  “Starry~en~Luv is really busy right now and she needs to go to an appointment with someone.  I’m really sorry if she---“

The young man laughed again.  “It’s not a problem!  A bunch of other people and I will ask her for an autograph later.”

“Okay, great.  Thanks a lot!  Ohohohohohohohohohoho!”  She laughed in a strangely comical way as she took Melanie away, and Melanie looked like she was totally confused.  Both of them started to head for the reception area.

Melanie looked embarrassed as she smiled uncomfortably with her hand at the back of her head and then she laughed.  “Sorry about that.  I was just really shocked seeing so many TV stars around me,” she said to Christina.

Christina giggled.  “You’re forgetting something, Melanie.”

      “What is it?”

“You’re a star, too, just like them.”

Melanie smiled at that.  “Oh, yeah, that’s right.  I almost forgot.”

“Come on, let’s go, Melanie.  We don’t want to be late for the appointment with Alicia Matthews,” said Christina.  Melanie and Christina went to the reception area.  Christina was the one who spoke to the person at the reception area.  “Hi!  We’re here to see Alicia Matthews.  I’m Christina Lane and---“

The receptionist looked really excited suddenly.  “Oh, wow, you’re Starry~en~Luv and Christina Lane!  Thank you so much for coming,” she said, and it surprised both Melanie and Christina.  But eventually, the two of them understood why she seemed excited.

“Thank you for having us,” said Melanie.  “We’re here to see Alicia Matthews.”

The receptionist smiled at her.  “Oh, okay.  I can call her to tell you that you’re here.”

“There’s no need to do that,” someone said.

Melanie and Christina looked up and they saw a lady approaching them.  She was a young lady in business casual clothes.

“Hello there.  You must be Starry~en~Luv and Christina Lane,” said the woman as she smiled at them.  She joined them at the reception area and she shook hands with Melanie and Christina.  “I’m Alicia Matthews.  Thank you so much for coming at such short notice.”

“Hello, Ms. Matthews,” said Christina.  “It was no big deal.  Thank you for inviting us to your show.”

      “Hello. Ms. Matthews,” said Melanie.

“Oh, my gosh, that sounds so formal.  Please call me Alicia from now on, okay?”

“Alicia?  Sure, no problem.  Then you can call me Christina!”

      “Oh, thank you,” said Melanie.

Alicia went over to Melanie and she patted her on the head, and that made both Melanie and Christina a bit puzzled.  “Wow, you’re so cute!  I so wanted to invite you to my show for a while now, ever since you had your first concert,” she said.

Melanie blushed slightly.  “Oh, okay…” she said softly, not really sure what to say.  “Thank you.”

“Why don’t we all go to my office?  We have a lot of things to talk about.  Before that, I’d like to show you around.”

      “Thanks, Alicia,” said Christina.

Alicia had a small office.  It was much smaller than Melanie imagined, but it was still cute.  It had a homely feeling to it.  It felt like someone’s cozy room, and the only difference was that it didn’t have a bed to sleep in or a closet for clothes to put in.

“Please have a seat,” said Alicia as she sat down at her desk and she started to move the mouse at her computer to try to find some files.

Melanie and Christina sat down.  “Thank you,” said Melanie.

“Okay, anyways, again, I have to thank you for accepting my invitation to have you as my special guest on the ‘Friday Night Hangout’ show,” Alicia said happily.  “It’s really exciting.  It’s been a while since I interviewed a new star, especially one who’s so small and cute.”

Melanie blushed at that and Christian just grinned at her.  “Oh, you’re welcome.  I’m really excited about it, too.  I’ve never been on TV before, not like this.”

The three of them talked about business for a while.  Alicia told them more about the Friday Night Hangout TV talk show that she is in charge of.  Not only was she the hostess, she was also the producer of the show.

“So basically, I’m just going to ask you some simple stuff first.  I’m just going to ask about some basic things and we can talk about them, too.  Then, later on, I’d like to ask you more about your dreams of becoming a singer and how everything started for you.  I’m sure lots of young people will want to hear that.  You don’t mind if I get a little bit personal, do you?”

“Personal?” Melanie asked, and she looked up at Christina.

Christina was the one who answered.  “I think, in that case, we just have to use common sense.  If it’s like little secrets, it should be okay.”  She turned to Melanie.  “I mean, it’s only okay if it’s okay with you, that is, when it comes to little secrets.”

Melanie thought about it for a moment and she nodded.  “Yeah, I think that’s okay, as long as they’re just little ones that I don’t mind sharing.”

Alicia laughed at that.  “Yeah, I know.  Oh, there’s one more really big thing.  I’m also hoping that you can sing a song during the show.”

Melanie smiled brightly.  “Oh, yes, please!  I think that would be nice!” she said.

“What song would you like her to sing, Alicia?” asked Christina.

“I was thinking about that new song that you’ve been singing on the radio lately.  It’s the song that you released on the radio some days ago.  What was it called again?”  Alicia thought about it for a while.  “Oh, yeah, it’s ‘Starry Night’!”

      “’Starry Night’?” said Christina.

About two weeks ago, Melanie wrote the song ‘Starry Night’, a beautiful pop ballad.  At the time, it was decided that the next thing she must do was put out a new song on the radio.  With the help of Christina, their producer Mr. King, and Regal Records, she was able to record the new song.  The new song by Starry~en~Luv was submitted to the radio stations across the country, and it’s been gaining a lot of attention lately.  ‘Starry Night’ has now been number one on the pop charts for the past few days.

“Yeah, I love that song.  It’s so sweet.  It’s nice and slow and very peaceful.  It’s really popular on the radio, too,” said Alicia.

Melanie smiled sweetly.  “Sure!  I’ll be glad to sing it.”

“Great!  Thanks, Starry~en~Luv!  I’m sure people are going to so love it!  I know they’re going to love it.  It’s been number one on the pop charts for the entire country for half a week now.  They’re definitely going to love hearing it and seeing it on the ‘Friday Night Hangout’.”

Christina looked really happy, too.  “Wow, this is going to be so cool, huh?  This’ll be the first time you’ll sing on television, too,” she said to Melanie.

Melanie nodded to that.  “Oh, that’s right.”

“And there’s one other thing I’d like to do as well.  I think it would be great if we could read some fan mail on the show and you could answer them on-air if people have any questions.  I’m sure you get tons of fan mail at Regal Records, but we also get some fan mail here, too, about you.  Most of the time, they’re asking when you’re going to show up on YTV and things like that.”

“I think that’s a great idea.  We have some fan mail and we can bring some to the show,” said Christina.  “Actually, Starry~en~Luv gets tons of fan mail.”

“Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with them,” said Melanie, and she giggled.

“Yeah, I’ll bet.”  Alicia smiled and turned to Melanie.  “You know, this is going to be such a great show on Friday night.  Please, let’s all do our best together.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I hope lots of people will watch it.”

“I’m excited about it, too,” said Melanie, being very cheerful.  “I asked my friends to watch your show on Friday night.”

The three of them continued to talk more about what they were going to do.  It was going to be a live show so Alicia told them what to expect.  Melanie and Christina were both very excited about what they were about to do.  As for Melanie, she couldn’t wait until the day comes for the show.

Kelsey Rayne was sitting at home one day after school.  It was the day after Melanie had gone over to YTV with her manager Christina.  Of course, Kelsey did not know anything about it.  Lately, she didn’t really want to look at Melanie or even talk about her.  Ever since that first public concert, Kelsey had pretty much not talked about her that much or just avoided her completely.

However, as she was sitting on the couch in the living room of her house, she looked down to the side and saw an opened CD case and a portable CD player.  Earlier, she was listening to the portable CD player.  The CD case was the one for Starry~en~Luv’s debut maxi single “My Heart”.

Kelsey was listening to Starry~en~Luv’s music CD earlier.

In fact, she didn’t just listen to the music CD once.  She had already listened to it several times, over and over again.

Kelsey was watching the YTV television channel because there was a cute Japanese animation show that was on about extremely cute talking hamsters living their strange but adventurous lives in the forest and the humans that lived near them.  When it was commercial break time, Kelsey saw a commercial that made her eyes go wide open with shock.

“Hi!  It’s me!  Alicia!  And I’m here to tell you to please watch our special edition of ‘Friday Night Hangout’ this Friday at 8:00 pm.  We’re going to have a special guest, and I think a lot of you kids know who she is already!  Join me on an interview with the child pop star Starry~en~Luv!  Not only are we going to have an interview with her, we’re also going to be reading some of her fan mail and taking phone calls from viewers like you.  And, best of all, she’s going to be singing ‘Starry Night’, her new hit song that has topped the Canadian pop charts since last week.  Don’t forget!  The ‘Friday Night Hangout’!  See you there!”

The commercial was over.  Kelsey’s hands formed fists and she clasped them together.  She closed her eyes and she sighed and she leaned her head back.  Now, it seems that Melanie is going to be on television.  It would be her first time on television.

      “It’s over…isn’t it?” she whispered.  “It’s really over…”

“Hurry up, Mom!  It’s going to start now!” Hazel called out.

“Okay, I’m coming!” said Isabelle, Hazel’s mother.

Hazel was sitting on the couch in the living room and her little brother Lawrence was sitting right beside her.  Isabelle, who was in the kitchen, was pouring a huge bag of popcorn into a big bowl.  She carried the big bowl of popcorn into the living room.  She put the giant bowl on the living room table and Hazel was really shocked when she saw it.

“Well, here you go!  Lots of popcorn to last until the end of the show!” said Isabelle, looking very proud of the amount of popcorn she had just made.

“Oh, my gosh!  Mom!  You didn’t have to make that much!”

“But we have to have enough for the whole show, right?” said Isabelle, looking a little silly.

“Well…yeah, I guess…but it’s only a half-hour show.  Melanie’s only going to be on TV for that long, you know,” said Hazel.

Isabelle realized that and she started to laugh out loud.  “Oh!  I see!  I guess that means we have to eat it really fast!”

Hazel nearly fell over when she heard that.

Everyone from Melanie’s Grade 5 class seemed to be glued to their television sets.  Justin was at home with his little sister Helen and the rest of his family.  Hazel was at her house eating popcorn with her brother Lawrence and her mother Isabelle, but she was not sure that they would finish the popcorn.  Melanie’s newer friends in her class, like Susan, Martha, Joanne, Jim, and Jimson, were all at their respective homes watching the show that was about to start.  That goes the same for Hazel’s once-again friends, Tara, Dinah, Anita, and Karen.  Also, Natasha came over to Kelsey’s house and she was surprised to find out that Kelsey wanted to watch the show, so she did not object to it.

The announcer began to speak on YTV.  “Hey, there, what’s up, everyone!  Welcome to the ‘Friday Night Hangout’, where we just chill out, kick back, and talk about whatever we want!  And here’s your totally hip, totally cool hostess, the girl who thinks she’s cool but that’s okay because she really is, Alicia Mathews!”

The audience of the show, who were mostly kids and teenagers, began to cheer and applaud, almost in a rowdy way, but it was in a cool way, too.  After all, it was a TV channel for kids and teenagers.  Alicia Matthews came out of the backstage area and she appeared on the set.  She smiled and she waved at everyone.

“Okay, what’s up, everyone!” she called out.  Everyone was cheering.  “Welcome to the ‘Friday Night Hangout’!  And don’t mind George, he always makes fun of me before every show.  And for some reason, I’ve never made fun of him back.  But don’t worry, next time, I will!”  Many audience members laughed and cheered again.  “Okay!  That’s it!  I have a special treat for all of you out there, those of us in our studio audience and everyone watching from all over Canada.  It’s Starry~en~Luv, the new idol pop singer that a lot of people really adore!  And she’s right here!  She’s cool, she’s hot, and she’s ready to sing her new hit song, ‘Starry Night’!  Here she is!”

At one part of the set, it was dark and different kinds of special lighting effects made it look like there were stars moving around the girl who was there.  Three spotlights were aimed at her and Starry~en~Luv appeared, dressed in low-rise black pants with flared-out bottoms and a black cardigan over a black tank top.  She held a microphone in her hand and she got ready to sing as music started to play for her famous new pop song.

(On this lovely starry night…)

Whenever I see you almost every single day (every single day)

Even though you’re near, I feel like you’re still far away (you’re still far away)

I know you’ll always be my friend no matter what (no matter what)

But can we also have something more than that? (something more than that)

I’ve let you into my heart, I need you with me (need you with me)

I hope for that day when you can finally be with me (finally be with me)

I don’t know when I’ll ever meet with you

I’ve known you for a long time; I just want to be with you

I wish one day that I can finally tell you

(On this starry night) Oh, you’re the one I love

Cast your eyes upon the heavenly sight

Fly with me, my love, to the stars shining bright

Open your heart and wish upon the starry light

(On this lovely starry night) Oh, on this lovely starry night…

(Starry night…)

(I want to tell you, I want to tell you, my love)

(But I don’t know what to say to you)

(On this lovely starry night…)

Whenever I look at the stars, I see your face (I see your face)

I want to see you; I want to run to you with haste (run to you with haste)

I wish I can reach up towards the starry sky (towards the starry sky)

Then I can share my feelings from this heart of mine (from this heart of mine)

But when I see you, I just don’t know what to say (don’t know what to say)

All I do is just wait for you every night and everyday (every night and everyday)

Everyone in the audience started to cheer very loudly and applaud.  It was the same with Melanie’s classmates who were in their respective homes.  Kelsey did not have any expression on her face and Natasha stared at her for a while, wondering what she was thinking about.  Grandma Annabelle was also watching the show at her house.  Mr. Wilkins was also watching at his house.  Both of them appeared to be pleased with what they were seeing so far.

Hazel screamed out loud in her house.  “Oh, my God, she’s so cool!” she shouted.  Her mother was totally surprised.

Melanie smiled at everyone and she waved.  She went over to Alicia and the two of them gave each other a quick hug, and then sat down on the couches that made the set look almost like a living room.

“Wow, Starry~en~Luv, that’s such a lovely song.  I’m totally in love with it.  I can listen to it over and over again for a few years and I don’t think I would ever get bored of it,” said Alicia, who looked very cheerful and happy.  Melanie was the same way.

“Oh, thank you, I’m glad you liked it,” said Melanie.

“Great!  Well, anyways, welcome to our show.  I’ve always wanted to invite you to our show since that concert you put up several weeks ago.  That was really something.  I was there, too.  I just had to see it.  I wanted to see who sang this really nice song on the radio.  It was called ‘Dream’, wasn’t it?”

Melanie nodded and smiled.  “Yes, that’s the one.”

“Wow!  And the one you just sang is called ‘Starry Night’, which is really popular on the radio lately.  I think this one is going to be just as big as the first one.  The first one was on the pop charts for 2 months!  I wonder how this one is going to do.”

      “Oh, yeah, I wonder, too.”

“So what grade are you in now, Starry~en~Luv?”

      “I’m in Grade 5.”

“Cool!  So school is fine with you, right?  How is it like at school for you?  I mean, most regular kids just go to school and do what they have to do.  But, for you, is it different?  I’m sure it’s pretty different at school for you, from the life you had before you became a pop star, and the life after.”

“Oh, yeah, it’s pretty different.  When I first came back to school after the concert, there were all these kids who recognized me and they were like asking for autographs.  I was signing people’s agenda books and things like that.  It was a little weird at first, but I got used to it.  Other kids would pass me by in the hallway and they’re always saying something nice or greeting me and that kind of thing.”

“That’s pretty amazing,” said Alicia.  “Are they still like totally surprised that a pop star goes to the same school as they do?”

“Some are still really surprised.  They just can’t get over it.  But I think most people are getting used to it.  They’re proud of it, but they also go along with it, too.  I guess they kind of feel a little bit famous, too.  I guess they’re used to me already.  But I like it that way.”

Alicia asked her several more questions about her new singing career and how it affected her life now and how it made things different from the life she had before she became a singer.  Melanie told her many things about the life she had before, including her life in Ottawa.  Both Melanie and Alicia avoided the political part of the story as much as possible.

“Okay, let’s read some fan mail!  I’ll bet you have a ton in here.”  Alicia placed a box on the table in front of them.  “It’s a little bit heavy.”  Melanie giggled at that.  Alicia reached into the box and pulled out one letter.  “Okay, let’s take a look at this one.  This first one is from a girl named Cindy from Waterloo, Ontario, and she’s asking ‘Do you think you’ll be as famous as the really big pop stars like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez?’  Well, how about it?”

Melanie blushed.  “Oh, well, I’m not sure.  I think they’re famous in their own way.  They’re doing their best to do what they love to do just like I am.  For me, I just want to do what I like to do and that’s to sing and convey my feelings.  It just makes me feel good to sing for people.”

“Oh, that’s right.  Yeah, you should do what you like.  You shouldn’t have to compare yourself to other pop singers, right?” said Alicia.

Melanie smiled and she nodded.  “Yeah, that’s right.”

Alicia read some more fan mail for Melanie.  They were fan mail from all over Canada, and they were a little surprised to find a few that were actually from outside the country.  Perhaps Starry~en~Luv’s fame was just starting to reach towards other countries as well.  Melanie answered all the questions from her fans very well.  When that was done, audience members began to ask her questions as well.

There were a couple of microphone stands that were set up between the aisles where the audience were.  Sometimes, someone from the audience would walk up to them if they were allowed to and would ask questions or comment on something.  One of them was a boy who was probably 12 or 13.

“Hi, Starry~en~Luv, I just wanted to say that you have a really awesome voice and you’re a very good singer.  I hope that you’ll get even more famous and be the most famous pop singer ever.  I think you can do it.  So keep it up!” he said.

Melanie smiled sweetly.  “Oh, thank you so much.  I’ll do my best.”

Very soon, it was time to take phone calls from the viewers across the country.  There were a lot of people who were trying to call the show, but only a few of them could get through.

“Okay, here’s our next call, it’s from a guy named Jimmy from Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Hey, how are you doing, Jimmy?” asked Alicia.

The voice came through the speakers.  “Hi there, I’m good, thanks.”

“So what do you want to say to Starry~en~Luv today?  You’re a big fan, aren’t you?”

“Oh, yeah, for sure I’m a big fan.  I’m just a grade higher than she is at school.  But you know, Starry~en~Luv, you’re so cute!  I wish you went to my school.”  The audience members started to laugh and so did Alicia.  Melanie laughed, too, but she was also blushing.  “But, anyways, I love all your songs, and I bought your CD, too.  I like it a lot and I’m always listening to it.  And I hope you’ll make lots more CD’s later!”

“Oh, good, I’m glad you liked it.  Thank you so much, Jimmy!” said Melanie, still blushing, but with a very bright smile on her face.

Alicia was really amused by that call.  “That was really cool.  Yeah, you are very cute, Starry~en~Luv.  I’m sure a lot of boys wish you attended their school.”

Melanie blushed again and she giggled.  “I don’t know if I can attend every school in the whole country.  That’s a little too much, I think.”

“Yeah, that’s true.  Oh, you know, we have one more call to take.  This one is from Vaughan.  I think that’s in your city, Starry~en~Luv.  She didn’t say her name because she didn’t want anyone to know that she was calling.  I guess she’s a bit shy.”

      “That’s okay,” said Melanie.

“Okay, here we go.  Caller, you’re on.  What would you like to say to Starry~en~Luv?”

“Hello,” said the caller.  Melanie nearly gasped.  Hazel gasped at while sitting in her living room at her house.

“What!  I know that voice!  It’s the witch!” Hazel shouted.  Isabelle looked confused.

Justin, at his house, frowned slightly.  “What now?” he said.  Helen looked up, slightly puzzled by that.

It was Kelsey’s voice.  Kelsey was on the phone and Natasha was looking on.  “Thank you for taking my call.  I really love your show.”

      Alicia smiled at that.  “Thanks!”

“I just wanted to say something to you, Starry~en~Luv.  I listened to your songs, and you know, I think they totally suck.  I totally hate them.  I don’t like any of your songs.  I think anyone who thinks that your songs are cool probably don’t even know what cool songs are.”

Grandma Annabelle was puzzled as she watched.  Mr. Wilkins looked puzzled as well.  There was chaos in the control booths at the studio.  Alicia received messages in her earpiece from the director.  Alicia looked really surprised and speechless for a second.  The audience looked confused, too.  Melanie’s classmates, Jim, Jimson, Joanne, Susan, and Martha, stared at their TV sets, wondering what was going on and what was going to happen next.

The phone call was cut off.  Alicia looked at Melanie.  “I’m so sorry about that.  Well, I guess that person probably has a few issues there, you know what I’m saying!”  She started to laugh and so did some of the audience.

Melanie pretended to laugh.  “Oh, I guess so.  But that’s okay.  It’s not a problem for me.”

“I sure hope so.  How does that make you feel?”

Melanie took a deep breath and she smiled sweetly.  “Well…it’s just that I love to sing and I love to show my feelings through songs and touch people’s hearts.  I know I can do my best doing that.  And I know there are a lot of people who love to hear me sing now.  But I also know there’s a few who don’t.  That’s okay.  I mean, I can’t make everyone happy.  I can make most people happy but I can’t make everyone happy.”

Alicia looked like she was very pleasantly surprised by that.  “Oh, that’s so cool!  You know, you’re right!  That’s so right!  Nobody’s perfect, you know, and you can’t please everybody.”

      “That’s right,” said Melanie.

The show continued for a few more minutes.  They talked about a few more things.  When it was over, Melanie was cheered on by her fans who were much of the audience.  She stood before them and she took a bow and she waved at them.  And she also thanked them for coming to see her at the “Friday Night Hangout”.  At their homes, Hazel, Justin, and their classmates enjoyed the show very much.  Hazel and Justin were especially glad that Melanie didn’t let Kelsey bring her down.  Of course, at Kelsey’s house, Kelsey and Natasha were having a major argument, but it seems that Kelsey wasn’t saying very much to go against what Natasha was complaining about.

Melanie looked so happy on TV.

The love of family (the love of family)

Always be in your heart (in your heart)

Forever and ever (family love forever)

Good memories of fun little things

Bedtime stories read while in your bed

They come tuck you in with a goodnight kiss

Sweet dream wishes always said

If you get hurt, they will always take care

Make you feel better, always be at your side

Staying with you when things get unfair

Stories of wisdom from generations’ wise

Old times and good times, nobody else will know

Telling the little ones unforgettable stories

To be loving to you and to be caring for

Times of family love, those are real treats

Children who live in a very happy home (very happy home)

But for some, it’s something they can’t have (they can’t have)

If I had the power to make people happy (make people happy)

I’d show them there’s always family love (always family love)

Even if you might have done something bad

They’re always going to love you

Even if they think you’re bothering them

They’re always going to love you

Even if they say things you don’t like

They’re always going to love you

You can have all the friends that you want

But you’ll always have one family

Always be together and support each other

Because you’ll always have one family

For the love of family (for the love of family)

We shall always be together (we shall always be together)

Forever and ever (forever and ever)

Living so far away from each other now

I haven’t seen my parents for a long time

They’re busy with lots of things and lots of work

I wonder how they’re doing, if they are fine

I don’t have a sister, I don’t have a brother

I wish I did so I could play with them

I have friends who care for me and love me

But family is different and it’s just not the same

I don’t know my grandparents because they’re gone

All that I have left is one grandmother

Even if she gets mad at me for so many things

That’s okay, no matter what, I’ll always love her

I must never forget them no matter what happens (no matter what happens)

Memories of togetherness that we’ll always have (we’ll always have)

If I had the power to make things better again (make things better again)

We could be together again with our family love (with our family love)

You can have all the friends that you want

But you’ll always have one family

Always be together and support each other

Because you’ll always have one family

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “Hi, everyone!”

Hazel: “Hello there!”

Justin: “Oh, you know what, Christmas is coming up soon.  Is there anything that you both want for Christmas?”

Hazel: “Hmmm, let’s see now…how about 1 million dollars?”

Melanie: “One million dollars?!”

Justin: “Just what the heck are you talking about, Hazel?”

Hazel: “Okay, never mind, that’s probably a little too much to wish for!”

Melanie: “Oh, guess what, there’s going to be a Christmas play at school just before the Christmas vacation.  It’s on the very last day, actually.”

Hazel: “Oh, cool.  I think you should go for it.  They won’t even do an audition for you, they’ll just take you because you’re Starry~en~Luv!”

Melanie: “Oh, okay, I’ll do my best!”

Hazel: “Hey, Justin!  What do you want for Christmas?”

Justin: “What I want for Christmas?  Hmmm…let me think…  What about a new video game?  The ones I like are shooters and role playing games.”

Hazel: “Hey, cool!  I know what I want!  I want those hot-looking shoes that I saw at the mall the other day but my mom said that they’re way too expensive.  I still want them though.”

Melanie: “Good grief, you guys, is that the only thing you’re thinking about when it’s Christmas time?”

Hazel and Justin: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!”

Melanie: “Episode 26: A Christmas play.  Let’s all do our best!
