Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 5 and I’ve become a famous idol pop singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m her number one fan, Hazel!”

Justin: “And I’m Justin, her other number one fan.”

Melanie: “You know, that was a really big thing that happened with me last time.  A long time ago, there was this guy named Alex Rowe and he tried to follow me and Christina around to try to take pictures of me.  But we escaped them.”

Hazel: “Yeah, but you didn’t escape him completely.”

Melanie: “No, I didn’t.  He took pictures of all of us helping a thief get away when we didn’t even know he was a thief, gave those pictures to a tabloid magazine editor, and had them published for millions of people to see!”

Hazel: “What a creepy guy he is!  If he was the same size as Justin, I would just slap him like this!”

Justin: “Ouch!  Hazel, don’t use me when you practice slapping people!”

Hazel: “Oh, sorry.  I got a little carried away.  I’m so sorry!”

Melanie: Come on, you two.  Anyways, I guess that made me kind of look weird to a lot of people, but a lot of people were on my side, too!  Including all of Regal Records, and Papa and Mama!  Because of everyone, it became illegal for people like Alex Rowe to do stuff like that to singers and other celebrities.”

Justin: “That’s good, Melanie.  That means that you don’t have to worry about him anymore, or anyone else that’s like him.”

Hazel: “That’s right.  He’s gone forever!”

Melanie: “It’s time for Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Melanie wore an autumn coat on this cool November day and her coat was dark blue in color.  She was looking up and saw that the clouds were getting thicker and that the sunshine was getting weaker.  It was not just today, but it’s been like that for the last several days.  The temperature was staring to drop as well.  She was standing in front of the Regal Records building.  She looked away from the sky and she glanced in front of her.

Many fans were standing in front of the Regal Records building, and they were being prevented from getting any closer to the famous child pop singer named Starry~en~Luv by crowd-stopping wooden obstacles and also by ushers and security guards.

“Starry~en~Luv, you’re so cool!” people were shouting with star-struck awe and amazement and amazement.  They were extremely happy to be here and Melanie could tell.  Melanie smiled at them and she waved at them like a princess.

“Melanie, it’s time,” said Christina, who was standing at the entrance into the Regal Records building.  Melanie turned towards her and started walking towards her.  Both of them entered the building.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 24: Starry~en~Luv’s beautiful first album

“Mom, hurry up!” Hazel called out.  She was dressed in a light jacket over casual clothes and her mother Isabelle was dressed the same way.

“Okay, okay, gee, Hazel, don’t worry so much.  It’s not like we’re going to miss too much…I hope,” said Isabelle, as she came out of the car.  She had parked her car in the parking lot of Regal Records.  She looked up at the building that was 10 floors high.  “So this is the place, huh?  It looks really cool.  Too bad we almost got lost getting here.  I don’t really know my way around downtown Toronto.”

      “Mrs. Callaway?”

Isabelle looked down and saw Hazel’s friend Justin looking up at her.  “Yes, Justin?”

“I think Hazel is beyond impatient now,” said Justin, with his usual calm voice.

Isabelle looked over at Hazel who was some distance away.  It almost looked like there was steam coming out of her head because she was getting annoyed.  Isabelle put a hand behind her head and began to laugh uncomfortably, as if she had just done something wrong.

Ohohohohohohohohohoho!  Okay, I’m coming.  Hold your horses,” said Isabelle, and she laughed again.

Hazel looked down and sighed with a little bit of frustration.  “My mother is so weird.  I think it must be the genes of this family,” she whispered.

Isabelle joined Hazel and Justin followed them.  “Thank you, Mrs. Callaway, for having me,” said Justin.

Isabelle smiled at him.  “Oh, it was no problem.  As long as your parents know where you are, I’m totally fine with you wanting to come along with us.  Actually, Melanie invited you, too, right?”

“That’s right,” said Hazel.  “She invited me and Justin.  But the problem was that no one could take us to Regal Records.  Thanks, Mom, for giving us a ride.  But you have to come with us and see Melanie singing. It’s going to be so cool!”

Isabelle started to giggle with Hazel.  “Wow!  I want to see her singing, too.  What about you, Justin?”

“I’ve seen her sing already,” Justin said very calmly.

Hazel frowned at him.  “Hey, there you are again, not being very sincere!” she said.

“I am being sincere.  Let’s go already.”

Hazel, Isabelle, and Justin went to the front entrance of the building and they headed towards the reception area.  Hazel was the one who was walking the fastest.  When she got to the receptionist, she was speaking very quickly.

“Hi!  I’m here with my mom and my friend and Starry~en~Luv invited us to come see her here!  I’m so excited!  Do you know where she is?  We really, really need to see her because she invited us to come, and we’re really, really happy that she did!” exclaimed Hazel, in a very excited way.  She looked like she had stars swirling around her face because she was star-struck.

The receptionist, Sally Jones, was surprised.  She could have sworn that this girl had said all that in less than 5 seconds.  “Um, did you say that Starry~en~Luv is expecting you?” she asked, her face very puzzled and confused.

Hazel’s mother and Justin joined her.

“Good morning,” said Isabelle, with a smile on her face.  Hazel looked up at her and she was a little puzzled, too, because all of a sudden, her mom was speaking in a different way.  She seemed almost professional and calm.  “I’m Isabelle Callaway.  This is my daughter, Hazel Callaway, and her friend, Justin Lagazo.  Hazel and Justin are good friends of Starry~en~Luv.  Starry~en~Luv invited us here today.  I believe she was expecting us at around this time.”

“Wow, Mom, you sound so…adult,” said Hazel.

Isabelle just smiled.  Sally, the receptionist, smiled, too.  “Oh, okay.  Melanie---I mean, Starry~en~Luv, told me about you three.  Thank you so much for coming,” she said.

“Do you know where we should wait?” asked Isabelle.

“You don’t have to wait.  You can go up and see her.  She is on the 4th floor right now and in Studio C.  Please go ahead and take the elevators.”

“Oh, thank you.  We’ll go there and meet her.”  Isabelle and Sally smiled at each other, and then, Isabelle started to walk towards the elevators, with Hazel and Justin beside her.  Justin pressed the button that would summon the elevator.  When Isabelle and Hazel’s eyes met, they smiled at each other, looking like they were both very excited, and they had good reason to feel that way.

“I can’t wait to see her,” said Hazel.

“Me, too!” said Isabelle.  She glanced at Justin.  “What about you, Justin?”

“It’ll be the first time I see her doing stuff at Regal Records.  That’s really exciting,” he said, and he had a slight smile on his face.  Hazel saw that and she sighed with relief.

When the elevator arrived, they went inside it.  It began to take them up to the 4th floor and when they get there, the elevator doors opened.  They left the elevator and looked down for a little bit, trying to look for this place called Studio C.

“I think it’s this way,” said Isabelle.  Hazel and Justin followed her.  Very soon, they reached a set of doors, and it was the doors that led into Studio C.  There were red illuminated words above the door, saying “Recording” and they guessed it was because Melanie was in there right now recording her song.

“This is it!” said Hazel.  Justin grabbed the door handle and the door slid sideways.

Melanie’s voice came out immediately.  They went inside Studio C and Justin closed the door.  In the recording studio, Melanie was singing…

(My heart must love again…)

Why do I still dream when my heart has been broken?

Will my dreams be nothing but a memory forgotten?

Please help me find another way to realize my dream

Push away the cold currents of the torrential stream

(My heart) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(My heart) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

(My heart, oh, my heart!) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(Love again, oh, love again!) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

The pop music was a slow ballad, with vocals in the background.  Melanie sang into the microphone and she could hear the music coming through her headphones.  She opened her eyes as she finished the song and she saw the people at the other side of the recording studio through the glass wall.  She smiled at all of them, Mr. Wilkins, Christina, Mr. King, and the two recording studio staff members.

And, of course, what made her surprised the most was Hazel and Justin and Hazel’s mother walking into the recording studio.  She gasped with excitement and she waved at them.  She saw Christina turn around, and she waved at them and approached them and shook Isabelle’s hand.

“Hello!” said Christina, in a very cheerful way, as usual.  “I’m glad you all made it.”

“Thank you,” said Isabelle, and she was also very cheerful.  “You must be Melanie’s manager.”

“Yes.  I’m Christina Lane.  It’s wonderful to meet you.  You must be Hazel’s mom.”

“That’s right.  Melanie invited us.  It’s so exciting.  I’ve never been to a record company before.  I know Hazel and Justin were here just once, but they didn’t see any of the cool stuff, like this place, and they didn’t get to see what Melanie was doing.”

“Yes, but now they can!”  Christina giggled and she glanced down at Hazel and Justin.  “Thanks for coming, you guys.”

      “No problem,” said Justin.

Hazel looked very excited.  “It’s so cool!  I can’t believe how cool everything is!”

Christina looked behind her and there were Mr. King, the recording staff, and Mr. Wilkins.  “Everyone, I’m sure you probably heard of Mr. John Wilkins.”

“Yes, we have, although we haven’t met him in the neighborhood,” said Isabelle.  “It’s good to meet you, Mr. Wilkins.”

“Good morning,” said Mrs. Wilkins with a nod.

Christina continued the introductions.  “This is Mr. Joseph King, our producer.  Hazel and Justin have met him.  And that’s Steve and Jason, who are part of the recording staff.  And, everyone, this is Isabelle Callaway, Hazel Callaway, and Justin Lagazo.”

“Hello,” said both Steve and Jason.

Mr. King smiled.  “Thank you for coming to Regal Records, Mrs. Callaway.  Melanie has wanted to invite all of you here for a long time.”

Isabelle smiled cheerfully.  “It’s a pleasure.”

Melanie came out of the quiet side of the recording studio.  She walked quickly towards everyone.  “Hazel, Justin, you’re here,” she said happily.

“Yeah, we are.  Thanks for inviting us!” said Hazel, and she and Melanie gave each other a hug.

Melanie looked up at Justin.  “I’ve never hugged you before, have I?”

“Let me think,” Justin said, and he thought about it for a moment, trying to remember if Melanie ever gave him a hug.  “No, you haven’t yet.”  Melanie giggled, and she hugged Justin.

“Melanie, you looked so cool in there while you were singing!  They were recording you while you were singing, right?” asked Hazel.

“Yes, they were.  They’re going to do some cool stuff with it with the computers and the programs they have on them, and then when they’re done, we’re going to make something very cool about them.”

“What are you making?” asked Justin.

Mr. King chuckled at that and he approached Christina and everyone who was close to her.  “Why, Starry~en~Luv’s debut maxi single, of course.”

      “What’s that?” asked Isabelle.

Mr. Wilkins smiled at that.  “That will be Melanie’s first CD album.”

Hazel and Isabelle gasped.  They had great pleasant surprise written all over their faces.  Even Justin could not stay completely calm.  He had a small smile on his face.

“And I’m so glad you’re here to see me and everyone working on it,” said Melanie.

Melanie was in a photo studio where three photographers were taking pictures of her.  The photographers were Richard Fletcher, Carol Grace, and their director of photography, Tom Walsh.  She was dressed in a very long flowing white gown that was blown in the wind by a large fan.  Christina, Mr. King, and Mr. Wilkins were entertaining their guests, Hazel, Justin, and Isabelle.

“Look right over here, Melanie,” said Mr. Walsh.  “That’s good.  You look great.”

Melanie looked towards one direction and smiled sweetly and dreamily as more pictures were taken of her.  She clasped her hands together at her heart and closed her eyes and looked down and smiled softly.  More pictures were taken.

“That’s good, that’s very good,” said Carol.

“I think I’m out of film,” said Richard, and he motioned someone over.  A young man gave him another camera, and took away the one that Richard was using.  “Okay, all set.”  He continued taking pictures of the young pop music star.

Mr. King was telling Hazel and Justin and Isabelle what they were doing.  “I hope everyone remembers that what I’m about to tell you is totally secret and does not go out to the public.  I usually would never do this, but since you’re Melanie’s friends and special guests today, I’ll make an exception.”

“We won’t tell anyone, Mr. King,” said Isabelle, smiling innocently.

Mr. King smiled and nodded.  “That’s good.  We have been working on Starry~en~Luv’s debut maxi single.  It will be the first CD that she will release to the music fans all over the country.  The name of this first album is ‘My Heart’.”

“’My Heart’?” said Hazel.  “That’s the name of one of her songs.”

“That’s right.  The CD will have 4 tracks.  The first will be ‘Dream’.  The second song will be the karaoke version of ‘Dream’.  The third song will be ‘My Heart’.  And the last song will be the karaoke version of the song ‘My Heart’.”

That’s when Christina stepped in and she spoke quite cheerfully about it.  “We’re really excited about this.  This will be her first CD.  As soon as it’s done, we’re going to announce it and advertise it and then start accepting orders for it from music stores everywhere immediately,” she said excitedly.

      “That’s really amazing,” said Isabelle.

“Yeah, I want to be the first to get Melanie’s first CD!” Hazel exclaimed very excitedly.

Justin glanced over at Hazel.  “But, you know, it’s very hard to be the first in line for something like this, Hazel.  You might have to camp out outside of a music store.”

Hazel was shocked.  “What!  You’re kidding!”

Mr. Wilkins smiled at that.  “If it’s going to be very popular, and I’m sure it will be, then it might be difficult to be the first person to get a copy of her CD.  But I’m sure that Ms. Lane and Mr. King have planned for that already and are prepared to meet with the demands.  Isn’t that right?”

Mr. King nodded.  “That’s right.  We have predicted a large number of orders.”

“And we’re going to be ready for them,” said Christina.

“Oh, that’s good.  That means I’m definitely going to get a copy,” said Hazel, with a big smile on her face.  Then she turned towards Justin.  “Hey, Justin, I’m going to get you a copy, too, if you don’t make it through the crowds…”

Hazel was suddenly puzzled.  Justin was staring.  Hazel looked at him for a while and soon, she realized that he was staring in the direction of where Melanie was.

      “Justin!”

Justin stopped and looked back at Hazel.  “What is it?” he asked.

“What are you staring into space for?”

“Staring into space?  What do you mean?”

Hazel looked at him, making a funny face.  “You were staring into space, don’t deny it,” she said with a laugh.  “I was telling you that if you can’t get a copy, I’ll get one for you.  I’ll get you a copy of Melanie’s first CD when it hits the stores.”

Justin nodded.  “Oh, yeah, that would be great.  Thanks, Hazel.  I’d love to get one.”

Hazel smiled and put a hand on his shoulder and she nodded with approval.  “Great.  Since we’re Melanie’s best friends, we get special treatment.”  She started to giggle like a maniac and Justin had a puzzled expression on his face because of that.

“Um, yeah, I guess you’re right.”

During the rest of the day, Melanie and Christina were showing Hazel, Justin, and Isabelle around the different areas of Regal Records.

At one point, they were in a room where there were several computers, and Christina picked up a music CD case, given to her by a graphic artist who was in the room.  She showed off the beautiful CD case to Melanie’s friends.  Hazel looked very excited as her eyes went wide open and she smiled a very large smile.  Justin looked at the CD case as well and Isabelle smiled as she bent down to see it.  Melanie was all cheerful as they looked at the CD case.  The graphic designer gave Christina an actual audio CD, and it was already labeled.  Christina showed it to them as well and they were very happy to see it.  Except for Justin, who is always calm about everything, but Melanie knew that he was glad in his heart.  Christina told them that it wasn’t the final design of how Melanie’s first CD album will look like, but it was very close to being made final.

Justin was watching someone at a computer.  The person was a graphic designer.  He was putting together some pictures on the computer.  Justin was asking some questions while the graphic designer explained to him what he was doing.  The pictures were of different beautiful locations.  There were pictures of water falls, flowers, blue sky with clouds, and others.  He was applying some interesting special effects on the pictures as well with the computer program he was using.

Melanie was on the roof of the Regal Records building.  She was standing on a platform in the middle of the roof and there was photography equipment all around her.  Mr. Fletcher was taking pictures of her while she was standing there in casual urban clothing.  Mr. Walsh was directing Mr. Fletcher and the other staff members with them on what they should be doing and how they should do it.  Mr. Fletcher took pictures of Melanie with the tall buildings of the downtown Toronto skyline behind her.

Hazel and Isabelle were wearing headphones.  They were in a sound editing room.  The sound editors in the room let them hear Melanie’s singing and the karaoke versions of those songs that she was singing.  They were the songs that will soon end up on the music CD.  They closed their eyes as they listened and they were following the beat of those lovely pop ballads that Melanie was singing.  Her voice was very soothing to them and they enjoyed listening very much.

A few days later, in some printing company far away, there were large printing presses.  The huge and loud machines that were in them were used to print on different kinds of paper of different sizes, and they would print very fast.  There was a printing press where CD inserts were being made.  They were CD inserts for Starry~en~Luv’s first CD, her debut maxi single called “My Heart”.

One day, Melanie was in Christina’s car and they were driving around the city of Toronto.  Both of them looked very excited as they watched several music stores putting up posters on their windows.  They were posters advertising Starry~en~Luv’s first album.   At one store, as soon as the store staff member put the poster up and left it, people walking on the sidewalk stopped and looked at it and they seemed very curious with smiles on their faces.

At school, Melanie was dropped off at school by Mr. Wilkins and once she came out of the car, several students crowded around her.  Melanie was startled and Mr. Wilkins laughed.  The students asked her for autographs.  She was a little bit shy but she gave them what they asked for, signing their agenda books or anything else they asked her to sign.  Then, she looked up and noticed that one of the students was Kathy Morris, who was the assistant editor of the school newsletter, Havenly Times.  She was holding a copy of the newsletter.  She smiled at Melanie and opened the newsletter in front of her.  There was a full-page advertisement on it, promoting Starry~en~Luv’s single called “My Heart”.  Melanie smiled and she giggled when she saw that.

There was a young man on the street just outside the music store closest to Regal Records.  The store was called Regal Music & Video.  That music store specialized in a lot of music that came from artists who worked with Regal Records, and Starry~en~Luv was definitely one of them.  The young man was handing out flyers to everyone who passed by and he looked very enthusiastic about what he was doing.

“Coming soon to our store, don’t miss the first single by Starry~en~Luv!  Don’t forget to stop by and pick up a copy!” he was saying out loud.

There was a girl who walked by the young man.  She was with her parents.  It was Kelsey Rayne.  She wore a light autumn coat.  She stopped and looked at the young man for a while who was advertising Starry~en~Luv’s first CD.  Her parents stopped and were puzzled.

“What is it, Kelsey?” said Elizabeth Rayne, who was her mother and an acquaintance of Melanie’s grandmother, Annabelle Hartford.  Kelsey’s father was at her side.  His name was Jonathan Rayne.

Kelsey stared at the flyers that the man was holding.  The young man saw her and smiled and handed a flyer to her.  Kelsey was startled.

“Here you go!  Don’t forget to buy Starry~en~Luv’s first CD!” he said.

Kelsey hesitated, looking a little surprised, but she recovered herself.  She took the flyer from the young man and she nodded.  “Thank you,” she said softly.  She walked back to her parents and she stared at the flyer for a long time with a blank look on her face.

On the flyer was Melanie, holding her hands together at her heart and looking up at the blue sky.  She had a dreamy look on her face and looked very dramatic.  She was not smiling.  She looked like she was thinking about something that affected her heart, but whether or not it made her happy or sad was a mystery.  That’s how it was supposed to be.  And there were words on the flyer as well.

“My Heart”

Starry~en~Luv

Debut Maxi Single

Coming soon to a music store near you!

Release date: November 15

“The love I feel for you, the longing for my dreams to fulfill, is in my heart.”

“What’s that, Kelsey?” asked her father, Jonathan.

Kelsey hesitated and she stuffed the flyer into her pocket.  “It’s nothing,” she said.  She looked up at her parents and she smiled slightly.  “Where are we going to next?”

“Let’s go underground.  There are some shops under here that we can check out,” said Elizabeth.

“Yeah, and we can also grab a bite to eat.  How does that sound?” said Jonathan.

Kelsey nodded and she smiled.  “Okay, let’s go.”

One night, Melanie was in her room.  It was already late at night, but she was trying to finish a letter that she was writing for her parents.  She was already ready for bed and was dressed in her nightgown, but she had to finish this letter before going to sleep.  It was very important.

Dear Mama and Papa,

How are you?  I hope everything is getting better.  Thank you so much for the help you gave me with the trouble from a little while back, when a tabloid magazine tried to make me look bad.  My manager, Christina, and my producer, Mr. King, helped me a lot to get through that.  It bothered me at first, but I figured that if I should just smile and keep moving forward and do the things that I love to do, then things would be better in the long run.

Even though you were not by my side, you were still able to help.  I thank you so very much.  Did you hear about my music CD yet?  It’s coming out on November 15, and that’s tomorrow.  I’m really excited about it!  I hope lots of people will come to the stores and buy my CD’s.  I want them to hear me sing and I want to show them my feelings through my music.  When you get the chance, please pick up a copy of “My Heart” from a music store.  I would love it very much if you did.  I’m finally fulfilling my dream.  You’ve always told me that I should do my best to follow my dreams.  Now, I’m living it and I feel very happy.

I hope that someday, you’ll get to visit me.  And I would really love it if you would be able to meet my manager.  Her name is Christina Lane.  She’s very nice and very cheerful.  She said that she’s fulfilling her dreams, too, by helping a singer like me become professional.  By the way, school is going very well for me now.  I have my best friends, Hazel and Justin, but I also have other friends now.  They’re always asking me for autographs!  I hope my hand doesn’t fall off from all that signing, but it’s a lot of fun.  A lot of kids at school said they’re going to buy my CD when it comes out.

Please take care of yourselves.  I’ll do my best to make you proud of me.  And I hope that we’ll see each other again very soon.

Love,

Melanie

Melanie smiled as she finished her letter and she folded it up.  She placed it inside an envelope and she sealed it with a tube envelope sealer.  She stood up from her chair and she looked outside through her window.  It was dark and it was cool outside.  But in her heart was all brightness and warmth.

“This is my starry love dream…” she whispered, smiling happily.

Melanie’s cell phone was ringing.  Now that Grandma Annabelle was no longer being kept out of the loop, she can let her cell phone ring at home a little more loudly, as long as it wasn’t loud enough to wake up her grandmother.  Melanie was sleeping and she stirred in her bed.  She opened her eyes slightly and she looked at the alarm clock.  It was only 5 am, and Melanie sighed.  It was Saturday morning, very early Saturday morning.

She took her cell phone from beside her pillow and she answered it with a sleepy voice.  “Melanie…speaking…” she said softly.

“Melanie!” a voice shouted through the cell phone.

Melanie was startled and she sat up on her bed and her eyes were wide open.  She was fully awake now.  “Huh?  Hazel!  What are you doing?  Why are you calling me so early?” said Melanie, with a shocked sound to her voice.

“Hey, sorry, but I’m really excited about today, you know!” said Hazel, who was in the kitchen in her house, eating breakfast cereal dressed in her pajamas.  “Guess what I’m doing right now.”

“Eating breakfast cereal in the kitchen dressed in your pajamas?” said Melanie.

Hazel was shocked.  “What!  How did you know?”

Melanie giggled.  “You’re my friend, that’s how.”

“Oh, that’s right,” said Hazel, and she laughed.

“But why are you awake so early?” asked Melanie.

“I can’t sleep anymore.  I woke up at 4 and I couldn’t go back to sleep.  I kept thinking about today.  You’re going to have your CD released today!  I’m so excited!  I want to be one of the first to line up at the store!  I’m going to pick up lots of copies!”

Melanie sighed and she smiled.  “Oh, that’s why.  I’m really excited, too.  I wonder if a lot of people are going to buy my CD.”

“Of course, they’re going to buy your CD!  You know that a lot of people loved your debut song on the radio in the summer.  There were so many people at the concert, too.  They were talking about it for a long time.  They still are.  And now, here you are with your first CD!  You know people are going to want to buy it and listen to it!”

Melanie giggled and so did Hazel.  “Well…I guess you’re right.”

“What do you mean, you guess I’m right?  Of course, I’m right!  You’re so modest, Melanie.  Every once in a while, you need to brag, even if it’s just a little bit.”

Melanie was puzzled by that and shook her head and she laughed.  “Maybe you’re right.  I’m really excited.  I don’t think I can go back to sleep now.  I won’t be able to stop thinking about it.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet.  I just had to wake you up.  I don’t want to wait all by myself, you know.”

“That’s okay.  We’ll just talk until it’s time for us to wake up.”

And that’s what they did.  They talked for about an hour, until it was time for Melanie to wake up.  But she was already awake.  The sun was rising from the eastern horizon.  Today was going to be the day when Melanie, known as Starry~en~Luv, was going to release her first CD.

“Okay, Melanie, we’re almost there,” said Christina, as she drove the car through downtown Toronto.  They were close to the building of Regal Records but that was not the place they were going to.  They were going to the music store that was closest to it, and the name of the store was Regal Music & Video.

Melanie was wearing black, and she dressed formally as well.  Of course, since the weather was cooling down, she had to wear a light autumn coat over it as well.

“That was fast,” she said softly and she smiled.

Christina turned the car onto another street and she smiled.  “Just look, Melanie,” she said.

Melanie looked up and she gasped, her eyes went wide open and her jaw dropped open.  She looked and saw a long lineup of people extending from the music store Regal Music & Video.  The lineup of people was going as far as her eyes could see.  They were lined up on the sidewalks for about half a kilometer and it made Melanie very surprised indeed.

“Oh, my gosh!” Melanie exclaimed.  She looked at her watch and saw that it was still quite early.  “When does the store open?  The store opens at 9 am, but it’s only 8 am and they’re all here already!  How long have they been waiting?”

“Mr. King called me earlier and saw that the lineup started at around 4 am this morning.  People are lining up that early to try to make sure that they get a copy of your CD!  Isn’t that exciting?”  Christina almost screamed with excitement.

Melanie beamed with great joy as she flashed a very cheerful smile.  “Let’s go over there and give them what they’ve been waiting for!  I don’t want them to be waiting any longer than they have to!”

      “Roger that.  We’re going in!”

The music store had been completely cleared of all their merchandise so that it could make room for thousands of copies of Starry~en~Luv’s first album.  Every shelf and every display case featured the CD’s.  There were also little gift items that were considered extras, such as pens, bookmarks, key chains, and many others, and all of them had the name “Starry~en~Luv” printed on them.

Joseph King, the producer, wearing his suit and tie, looked at his watch.  “It’s almost time for the store to open,” he said.  He glanced down at Melanie, who was dressed very pretty and formal.  Christina was standing beside her as well, also dressed very formally.  “Are you ready?”

Melanie took a deep breath and she nodded.  “I’m ready.”  She and Mr. King and Christina were in the back room where no one could see them.

      “Are you nervous?” asked Christina.

“Yes, very much, but I think I’ll be okay.”

“It’s another first for you, Melanie.  Your CD’s are being released and you’re going to be at an official autograph session at the same time as they buy them.”

When the clock struck 9 o’ clock, the doors were opened by the store staff members.  Customers started to walk into the store and they greeted them.

“Thank you very much for coming,” said one store clerk.

“We hope that you’ll enjoy Starry~en~Luv’s first CD!” said another.

Many of the customers were whole families.  There were many children and teenagers and their parents.  Girls and boys were browsing through the many items that were on display, which were Starry~en~Luv gifts.  Then they checked out the CD’s.  Kids were looking at them and they were all smiles and asking their parents to buy them.

When it was time for Melanie to start dealing out autographs on the CD’s, she was seated behind a table.  Christina stood beside her and helped out along with a couple of store staff.  People lined up to get their CD’s signed by the new well-loved pop star.  Each person greeted her and she greeted them back.  She signed the insert of the CD case and she gave it back to them, thanking them for buying the CD and hoping that they would enjoy it.

“Hi, Starry~en~Luv!” said a couple of super-excited, star-struck high school girls.

“Hello,” said Melanie, smiling sweetly.  “How are you today?”

“We’re great!  We’re so happy to meet you in person!” said one of the girls.

“And you get to sign the CD’s we’re buying, too!” said the other girl.

Melanie giggled in such a cute way that it made the two girls scream with delight.  She signed the inside of the inserts of the CD’s they just bought and then she gave it back to them with a lovely smile.  “Thank you so very much.  I hope you’ll enjoy them!”

      “We will!” they said together.

After the two girls left, Christina put a hand on Melanie’s shoulder.  “Melanie, look.  It’s Hazel and Justin with Hazel’s mother,” she whispered into her ear.  Melanie looked and saw them coming towards her.  Hazel, Justin, and Isabelle stopped by the table.

“Thank you so much for coming!” said Melanie, but what else she was going to say was cut short when Hazel screamed with great joy and ran into Melanie and hugged her.

“I don’t know what to say anymore!  It’s just too awesome!  I don’t have any words!” shouted Hazel.  “My best friend is an idol pop singer and everyone’s buying her CD’s and she’s signing them, too!”  She turned towards the people who were waiting to get their CD’s signed.  “Okay, people!  This is my best friend!  Please buy her CD’s, okay?”

Some of them laughed and others smiled.  Melanie giggled and blushed.

Christina shook hands with Isabelle.  “Mrs. Callaway, I’m so glad you made it.  Would you like to help us out?” she asked.

“Oh, yes, I would love to.  Just tell me what I have to do,” said Hazel’s mother, who smiled cheerfully.  “Oh, by the way, if you want, you can call me Isabelle.”

“Sure, if you call me Christina.”  The two of them laughed.

Melanie continued signing CD’s while Christina handed the signed CD’s to the music fans.  Justin and Hazel arranged the CD’s that weren’t signed yet on the table so that they would be ready for Melanie to take and sign them for the music fans.  Isabelle was doing the same thing that Christina was doing.

“Melanie, check it out,” said Justin.  “It’s our classmates.”

They had all come us a group.  They were Jim, Joanne, Jimson, Martha, and Susan.  All of them were in a very good mood as they all stood in front of the table.

“Hi, Melanie!” said Susan.  “You look great!”

“Yeah, you look so perfect right now,” said Martha.

Melanie smiled at all of them.  “Thank you so much for coming,” she said to them.

“We had to come.  After all, we’re your classmates and we’re here to support you,” said Jim.

“Yeah, I’m sure you would more than anyone else,” said Jimson, who started to laugh.

“Yeah, that’s for sure,” said Joanne.  “Hey, Melanie, make sure you give one to Jim first, because if you don’t, he’ll probably be really disappointed.”

All five of them laughed and Melanie just giggled.  “Okay, if you say so.”  Melanie gave them all CD’s and she signed them as well.  “Thank you!”

Her classmates looked very happy as they held the sparkling CD cases in front of them!  “Thank you very much, Starry~en~Luv!”

Another hour passed by, and Melanie was still doing the autograph session, which was about halfway done.  Her hands were getting tired, but she didn’t mind at all because she felt very happy about what she was doing.

While she was signing, Mr. King walked towards the table.  “Starry~en~Luv, I think you have a couple of very important visitors,” he said to her.

Melanie looked up and she was puzzled.  “Oh, I do?  Who are they?”

Two very familiar-looking girls appeared behind Mr. King and showed themselves.

      “Hi, Melanie!” said one girl.

“Hello there!” said the other girl.

Melanie gasped.  “Jenna!  Janice!”  She jumped out of her chair and she ran into her best friends from Ottawa.  The three of them hugged each other for a very long time.  Hazel and Justin looked on, slightly puzzled.

“We missed you so much, Melanie!” said Janice.

“Yeah, and you know what, I can’t believe you’ve made your dream come true so fast!” said Jenna.

Melanie’s eyes were misty so she wiped them.  “I missed you, too!  Wow, when did you get here?  Who did you come with?” she asked them.

“Our parents are here.  They’re actually outside because they couldn’t get in with so many people.  But that’s okay, because we’re here to see you!” said Jenna.

“We’re here to buy your first CD, Starry~en~Luv!” said Janice.  “And not only that, we’re here to see you!  We came all the way from Ottawa just for this.”

Melanie took a deep breath and she smiled at both of them and she hugged them again.  They returned her hug.  “Thank you…I’m so happy to see you again.  I missed you so much,” she said softly.  She looked back at Hazel and Justin and she giggled.  “Here, I want you to meet my new best friends here!”

Melanie took Janice and Jenna’s hands and led them to the table where Hazel and Justin were waiting.

“This is Hazel and this is Justin.  They’re my classmates and my best friends here.  So now, I have 4 best friends,” said Melanie.  “Hazel, Justin, this is Jenna and this is Janice from Ottawa.  I used to be in their class when I was living in Ottawa.  They’re my best friends there.”

Hazel smiled.  “Nice to meet you!” she said cheerfully.

“Nice to meet you,” Justin said very calmly.

      “Same here!” said Jenna.

“Yeah, I’m glad to meet you!” said Janice.

Melanie smiled at all of her friends, two best friends from where she used to live and two best friends from where she’s living now.  They were finally able to meet each other for the very first time, and she hoped that they would become friends together as well.  Melanie signed two copies of her CD for Jenna and Janice and she gave the copies to them.  They were very thankful.

“Huh?” said Hazel, seeing something at the corner of her eye.

She looked and saw a hooded figure of a girl picking up a copy of Melanie’s first CD.  That girl turned around in such a way that made her face become visible to Hazel, even if it was only for a split second.  Hazel knew who that girl was immediately and she gasped softly.  There was a frown on her face for a second, but when she saw the girl walk away quickly towards the cash register, pay for the CD, and leave just as quickly as she came in, she became puzzled.

      “Kelsey?”

From the way she appeared and then disappeared, and wearing the hood of her autumn coat so no one would recognize her, it looked like Kelsey Rayne…did not want to be seen buying Starry~en~Luv’s---Melanie’s---first CD.

And that made Hazel very confused.  “What on earth was she doing?” she whispered to herself.

Melanie wanted some time alone with her best friends from Ottawa so she had gone into the back room after the autograph session was finished.  Outside, people were still buying her CD’s and the little gift items that were also offered with them.  She looked up at her friends Jenna and Janice and she looked like she was speechless for a very long time.  Her eyes were slightly damp as well, but she was smiling.

“Jenna…Janice…it’s been almost half a year since I saw you…” said Melanie, her voice very soft.

Janice smiled at Melanie and the two of them held hands.  “Melanie, we missed you, too.”

Jenna smiled and nodded.  “Yeah, and that’s the reason why we came all the way from Ottawa, you know.  It wasn’t just because we found out that you made your dream come true and became the pop singer that you’ve always wanted to be.”

“Exactly,” said Janice.  “One of these days, you have to tell us how you did it.”

“What do you mean?” asked Melanie.

“You know, how you became a pop singer,” said Jenna.  “I would love to hear your story.”

Melanie started to giggle and she wiped her eyes with a handkerchief.  “Oh, that’s right.  I guess I owe you a big explanation.”

“Yeah, that’s for sure,” said Janice, and she and Jenna and Melanie began to laugh together.

“So what’s new anyway?  Is there anything new at school?” asked Melanie.

“Nothing, really, but we’re still in the same grade.  We’re just in different schools.  We have a new teacher and her name is Mrs. Harrison, and my God, she’s strict.”  Jenna talked about that new teacher that they had at their school in Ottawa like she was someone to be scared of.  “You do not want to get her mad.  And the quickest way to get her mad is not doing homework.”

Melanie gasped.  “Oh, my gosh, does that mean that I left Ottawa at just the right time or something?  I don’t know if I can handle a strict teacher.  I’ve never had a really strict one before.”

“I think you’re right.  It was right for you to leave just to escape from her.  I really got into big trouble one time with her.  After that, I always did my homework.”

Melanie was shocked and she giggled.  “Oh, my gosh…”

Janice smiled because of that.  “Yeah, Jenna got really freaked out.  Now she always does her homework.  At least, until when the school year is over, then she’ll go back to her normal self next year.”  She turned to Jenna.  “Is that right, Jenna?”

Jenna smiled proudly and laughed.  “Why, of course!”

Melanie sighed and shook her head but she was still smiling.  “Oh, Jenna, you still sometimes don’t do your homework.  One of these days, that’s going to catch up with you.  Maybe it’s starting now with that new teacher you have.”

“You really think so?” said Jenna.

Janice nodded.  “Yeah, she’s right.  It is catching up to you now, huh?”

“That could be bad.  I’m going to have to find a way to go around that.”

Janice and Melanie sighed.  “Oh, well, at least you’re the same Jenna that I love as my best friend,” said Melanie.

“Well, of course!” said Jenna.  “I’m never going to change.  We’ll always be best friends.”

“That goes for me, too, Melanie!  We’ll always be best friends, all three of us, no matter how far away from each other we are,” said Janice.

Melanie smiled and she nodded to that.  “That’s right.  I’m going to give you my cell phone number so you can call me.”

“Oh, that’s a great idea,” said Jenna.

“Wait a second.  Your cell phone is here and we live in Ottawa, so doesn’t that mean that it’s long distance or something?” asked Janice.

Jenna blinked a couple of times.  “Oh, that’s right.  I forgot.  But who cares?  This is Melanie we’re talking about here.  We have to get her phone number.”

Janice laughed.  “Yeah, you’re right.  So what is it, Melanie?”

Melanie gave the two of them little pink business cards that had cute designs on them.  On them were her name and her stage name and the name of the record company, Regal Records.  There was also her cell phone number, the Regal Records phone number, and her email address.  “I think this has everything that you’ll want to know.”

“Wow, business cards.  And you have an email address, too?  That’s so cool!” Jenna said.

“What’s so cool about that?  That’s normal!” said Janice.  “But it’s great.  Maybe we don’t have to worry about that long distance thing then.”

      “That’s right,” said Melanie.

“We’ll email you, but we’ll also still write letters to you.  And if we can, we’ll try to call you, too, but that’s a little bit harder,” said Janice.

Melanie smiled at them and giggled.  “Maybe you should get cell phones, too.  Ask your parents if you’re allowed to have one.  Then you can send me messages through there.  It doesn’t have to be a phone call, you know.”

“Oh, wait, Melanie, we have some time, so why don’t you tell us everything that happened?  Tell us everything that happened that made you become a pop singer!” said Jenna.

“Yeah, I want to hear this story, too,” said Janice.

Melanie was very happy to tell them.  “Sure!  Let’s see…” she said.  Then she started telling them the story of Starry~en~Luv.  She started from the time when she first met Hazel at school and Hazel became curious about Melanie’s singing.  Melanie told the story to them starting from there, and she told them everything, including about Mr. Wilkins, who helped her get into the audition at Regal Records.  She also told them about meeting Christina Lane for the first time, and also doing many fun jobs at the record company and meeting Joseph King, the world-famous music producer and the most famous producer at Regal Records.  Then she talked about her song debuting on the radio, and then her live concert.  She told them everything.

“That’s so amazing…” said Jenna, looking quite in awe.

“Really amazing…” said Janice, who was also in awe.

After several more minutes of talking, the three of them were silent once again.  Jenna looked at her watch.  “Well, I guess it’s almost time to go back.  Our parents are waiting outside.”

“Yeah, it’s time to go, huh?” said Janice.

Melanie smiled slightly and looked down and she clasped her hands together at her heart.  She felt very happy that her friends from Ottawa were able to visit her, but she knew that they had to go back.  She understood that there was no way that they could stay here.  She thought about that, because she was thinking for a couple of seconds that maybe the two of them could move to Toronto, but that would not be possible and it would sound selfish of her as well.

She sighed and told herself in her mind that she was not going to cry.  “Jenna, Janice, thank you so much for coming to see me,” she said to them.

Janice smiled at her.  “You’re welcome.  We promise to email you and send you letters.  We’ll do everything that we can to keep in contact with you.”

“That’s right,” said Jenna.  “We’ll always be together, even if we live far away from each other.  We’ll always be best friends.”

Melanie nodded to that and she smiled brightly and she hugged the two of them.  All three of them embraced each other.  Melanie felt like she was going to cry but she did her best not to.  It was not the time to cry.  She knew she was going to see them again, especially since they all promised that they would see each other and contact each other.

It was late afternoon.  Christina’s car stopped in front of Grandma Annabelle’s house because Melanie was being dropped off.  She came out of the car, wearing her autumn coat, and she took her backpack from the backseat and then closed the door.

“Thank you for today, Christina!” Melanie said very cheerfully.  “I had so much fun.”

Christina giggled.  “That was really something.  I’ve never done anything like that before.  But I’m really glad that you had a lot of fun.  I’ll call tonight about other stuff that we’re going to be doing next, so keep your cell phone on at all times.”

Melanie just smiled.  “My cell phone is always on.”

“That’s good,” said Christina and she smiled.  “Anyways, I better get home, too.  I know you’re tired.  You take care, okay?”

“Okay.  See you later!” said Melanie, as she waved.  Christina waved, too, and she closed the window at the passenger side of the car.  She stepped on the accelerator and the car began to drive away.  As the car sped away, Melanie quickly walked to the front door and she unlocked it and opened it.

Melanie went inside the house and took her shoes off.

“Grandma, I’m home!” she called out.

Grandma was just coming down the stairs and saw Melanie as she removed her shoes and closed the front door.  “Melanie.  Did you have a good time?” she asked, her voice sounding very calm.  It still sounded a little bit strict, but Melanie assumed that’s just the way she speaks.  And her face did not show any emotion either.

Melanie smiled at her grandmother.  “I had a wonderful time.  It was lots of fun,” she said.

“Good.  Make sure you rest well tonight.  I’m sure a singer’s life can be quite hectic, especially to a singer who is a child singer,” said Grandma.

“I will, Grandma.”  Then Melanie remembered something as she put down her backpack on the floor.  “Oh, I almost forgot.  I want to give you something.”

Grandma was puzzled, but she showed little of it.  “Oh?  What is it?”

      “It’s a gift,” said Melanie.

“A gift, you say?”  Grandma frowned slightly and shook her head.  “Don’t waste your money.  I’m sure you get paid well at Regal Records, but that’s no excuse to just spend money left, right, and center on gifts.  It is not necessary.”

Melanie sighed and smiled sweetly.  “I’m sorry.  But I really wanted to get you something.  Just to show you that…that I want to thank you,” she said with a very soft voice.

“Thank me?  What for, child, since I’m sure that I have done nothing special?”

“Oh, well, I think you have.  I’m really thankful to you…for letting me follow my dreams.”

Grandma paused for a long time, and there was silence between the two of them.  She looked into her granddaughter’s eyes and she sighed.  “Now, Melanie, that is not necessary.  You made me realize how much you are like your mother.  You have all of her good qualities, if not more so.  Once you are determined to follow your dreams and ambitions, nothing is going to stop you.  And that’s good.  Not even a strict and overprotective grandmother like me.”

“But I really do want to give you this.  Please accept it,” said Melanie, and she drew out a CD from her bag.  It was her music CD, the one that was released today, of course.  “If you want to hear me sing, Grandma, you can always do that with this.”

Grandma hesitated for a long time as she stood in front of her granddaughter.  Melanie extended the gift to her grandmother.  After a while, Grandma took a deep breath and she smiled slightly and she accepted the music CD.

“Thank you, child…” she said.  What she said made her sound very grateful, but her voice did not suggest it.  Melanie knew, however, that Grandma really was thankful.  She was just not good at showing it.  “I have heard your singing voice, but at the time, I didn’t realize it was you.  I’m sure I will enjoy it very much.”

Melanie smiled sweetly at her.  “You’re welcome, Grandma.”

Grandma held the CD case as she looked at it and raised an eyebrow.  “They certainly do know how to make a person look dramatic, don’t they?” she said, and because of that, Melanie giggled slightly.  She glanced down at Melanie.  “It looks lovely.  I am very proud of you, Melanie, and I’m very proud of what you have accomplished so far.”

      “Thank you so much, Grandma.”

      “And, please remember.”

Melanie became slightly puzzled.  “What is it?” she asked.

“Just because I’m very strict and overprotective does not mean that I do not support you.  Please do remember that, child,” said Grandma.

Melanie smiled.  “I know that now.  I’ll remember.”

“I’m glad that we finally understand each other.  Now let’s go play your first music CD on the CD player while I start making dinner.  And, of course, if you’d like, you’re certainly invited to help me in the kitchen.  You really do need to learn more about working in the kitchen, Melanie.”

      “Okay!  Thank you, Grandma!”

After Grandma opened the case for Starry~en~Luv’s first music CD and placed the CD in the player and started playing it, both she and Melanie went into the kitchen, where they started to make preparations for dinner time.  And the very first song that played was…
