Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 5 and I’m already working to become a singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m Hazel, her number one fan!”

Justin: “And I’m Justin, also a number one fan.”

Melanie: “Well, we did it!  We joined the newsletter committee at our school.  I’m going to be the advice column writer.”

Hazel: “And I’m going to be the photographer.  Say cheese!”

Justin: “Hey, no pictures of me!”

Hazel: “Awww, you’re no fun.  But at least, things are really looking good with the newsletter.  The editor, Terry, is really cute.  Susan is a really awesome artist.  Darren is a great writer.  Yung is a super-smart little whiz kid.  Kathy is full of energy!  What an interesting crew!”

Melanie: “People started writing letters for my advice column, too, and I think it’s a big success.  It’s also making a lot of people wonder what in the world is going on, when they saw Starry~en~Luv’s name as the author of the advice column!”

Justin: “I heard a lot of people wondering if it was really the same person as the singer on the radio.  It was interesting listening to what they were saying.”

Melanie: “But you know what…sometimes it’s sad.  There must be a lot of people who have really extreme problems, like that boy that I was trying to help.  He was being abused by his father.  It makes me so sad that something like that was happening to him.  But I did my best to help him because that’s what Starry~en~Luv does.”

Hazel: “Things did get better for him after all.  Thank goodness.”

Justin: “He should be okay by now.”

Melanie: “It’s time for Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Christina drove Melanie to an area near the lakeshore of Toronto called the Ontario Place, which was a big tourist attraction.  However, the park was closed for today because of preparations that needed to be done.  Melanie knew exactly what those preparations are.  They were preparations for the debut concert for the little girl pop singer Starry~en~Luv, whose song “Dream” has been number one on the country’s pop charts for the past one and a half months.

They stopped in the parking lot and they came out of the car.  Melanie and Christina walked to an area where there were several people working.  Near the entrance was a huge billboard that was all covered up by a canvas curtain.

“Well, here we are.  There’s something that I want to show you, Melanie,” said Christina.

      “What is it?” asked Melanie.

Christina smiled at her.  “You’ll soon see.”  She walked over to the supervisor who was working there and she began to talk to him briefly.  He nodded and shouted some orders to some of his workers.  The canvas curtains began to pull sideways to uncover the huge billboard.  What Melanie saw next totally shocked her.  She gasped, her eyes wide open, and her hands clasped together at her heart.

Christina rejoined Melanie and looked up with her.  “Well, what do you think?”

On the billboard, Melanie saw herself.  Actually, she saw Starry~en~Luv, dressed up in her beautiful, flowing, sparkling, white angel costume.  She had her hands clasped together at her heart, too.  She was looking up at the stars and her eyes were closed.  Her face was being viewed from the side.  And there were some words there as well.

Melanie was speechless for a few moments, but then she finally composed herself.  “Is…is that really me?” she whispered.

Christina looked very glad for her.  “Yes, it is.  That’s you when you become Starry~en~Luv.”

Starry Love Dream

Episode 18: It’s my first concert, I’m so excited!

With the concert just a couple of days away, Melanie felt nervous and excited and happy all at the same time.  She was standing at the front steps of her school because she was waiting for Hazel and Justin to arrive.  In a few minutes, she saw the car that would drop off Hazel and her brother Lawrence at school.  It stopped by, dropped of Hazel and Lawrence, and then drove away.

      “Hey, Melanie,” Hazel called out.

Melanie waved at her with a smile.  Hazel joined her, keeping her little brother beside her.

Hazel looked puzzled as she stared at Melanie, who was silent but had a small smile on her face at the same time, and she was looking down, too.  “What’s up?  You seem very quiet.”

Melanie looked up and her smile became big and bright and she gave Hazel a hug.  Hazel was surprised but she smiled as she hugged back.  Melanie pulled back after a moment.

“I guess something good is happening.”

“Yes,” said Melanie.  “It’s my first public concert.  I’m so excited about it.”

“Oh, that,” said Hazel, who smiled.  “You told me that already.  I’m so happy for you.  I can’t believe it!”  Now, she was getting far more excitable than she usually was.  “You’re so awesome!  I can’t believe that my best friend is going to sing in her first concert!  I feel like a star-struck fan!”  Hazel took Melanie’s hands.  “Say, can I have your autograph?”

Melanie blushed and began to laugh.  “You mean, right here?”

Hazel started to laugh, too.  “You can give me one later.”

For a minute, they waited there and they talked.  They were waiting for Justin this time.  After a few minutes, they saw him walking down the sidewalk towards them with his little sister Helen.  Justin and Helen joined them and Hazel and Melanie waved at them.

“Hello, Justin, Helen,” said Melanie, who looked extremely happy, and Justin noticed that immediately.  He smiled slightly.

“Good morning,” said Justin.  “You’re really upbeat today.”

Hazel gasped and she turned to Melanie.  “Oh, wait, we haven’t told him yet, have we?” she asked.

      “No, we haven’t,” said Melanie.

Justin looked a little puzzled.  “You haven’t told me what?”

“Melanie is having her first public concert, or should I say, Starry~en~Luv?” said Hazel.  “It’s going to be on Saturday at 7:00 pm.”

For a second, Justin seemed to look excited as his eyes went wide, but then it disappeared quickly.  “Is that so?  That’s awesome!  Congratulations, Melanie.  Where is it going to be?”

Hazel looked down and sighed.  “Man, nothing ever makes this guy scream with excitement.”

Melanie giggled.  “It’s going to be at the Ontario Place, in downtown.”

Ontario Place, huh?  Hey, I’ll be sure to go there.  I’ll invite my whole family, too,” said Justin.

“Oh, yes, please do that.  I’d love it if you could come.  I want you to.”

Hazel smiled at both of them.  “I’m coming, too, of course.  I’m going to get my whole family to go and see you live in action,” she said.

“We’ll be sure to cheer you on,” said Justin, and this time, he smiled, a little more brightly than he normally would.

Melanie looked extremely happy to hear that.  “Thank you so very much!”

“Hey, did you hear the commercial on the radio?” asked one of the girls in Melanie’s class, whose name was Martha.

“Yeah, I heard!  Isn’t it amazing?” said another girl named Joanne.

“I saw the commercial on TV.  It looks like the little girl singer on the radio is going to have her first concert downtown,” said Jimson, one of the boys in Melanie’s class.

“I’ll bet that’s going to be really something.  She has such a cute voice!  Now we get to see her for real!  She must be so cute!”

Martha and Joanne began to giggle and Jimson laughed.

“Yeah, I’ll bet you really want to see her.  You probably want to see her more than anyone else,” said Martha.

Then Jim looked a little bit disappointed.  “Too bad they didn’t show her face on TV!  They only showed a shadow of her and then they showed her but she had her back turned!  Well, a little bit of her face showed because she was looking sideways, but that’s not good enough!”

“I guess they want to really make this a big mystery!” said Joanne.

“Yeah, well, we’re about to find out the real Starry~en~Luv,” said Jimson.

All over the city, inside many music stores, there were posters that advertised the first concert of Starry~en~Luv.  In the shopping malls, people were gathered around some of the music stores and they saw the advertisement and they were talking about Starry~en~Luv.  They talked about what a great singer she is and that her song on the radio called “Dream” has been number on for over a month now.  People were excited to see Starry~en~Luv for the first time.

It wasn’t just in the city.  It was also advertised in smaller cities and towns outside of Toronto.  There were billboards that were on the side of roads and highways that showed an image of Starry~en~Luv with her back slightly turned to everyone and with a side view of her face.  Part of her face could be seen, but it was not enough for anyone to notice that she looked similar to Melanie.  It was not enough for people to think that it was Melanie Thompson.

It was after school when Melanie was running down the sidewalk.  She was happy and glad, of course.  She ran down the sidewalk to the part of the neighborhood where her home was located.  It was also where Mr. Wilkins’ home was located.  When she reached the front of Mr. Wilkins’ house, she stopped and leaned on the fence, trying to catch her breath.

Mr. Wilkins was watering the garden and he saw Melanie.  He saw immediately that she had run all the way to her from her school.  “Melanie!  How’s it going?” he asked her as he waved.

Melanie was still trying to catch her breath.  She leaned against the fence as she beamed at him with a happy face.  “Mr. Wilkins, my first public concert!  It’s going to be on Saturday!  I forgot to tell you about it, I’m so sorry!”

“Oh, I knew about it,” said Mr. Wilkins.

Melanie looked slightly surprised.  “You did?”

“Yeah, of course, I knew.”  He smiled at her as he approached her and leaned against the fence.  “I do have connections with Regal Records and high-ranking staff members there, after all.  Christina told me and so did a few others, including that lady that I first talked to about getting you into the audition.  Everyone there is rooting for you, you know.”

Melanie smiled at him brightly.  “I’m so glad.  I’m really excited about it.  I’ve never been the star of a concert before.  Actually, I’ve never been in a concert before.  I’ve only watched from the audience, that’s all.  It’s so exciting!”

“Congratulations, Melanie.  I knew that you could do it.”

“Thank you, Mr. Wilkins.  I couldn’t have gotten this far without you.”

“Oh, no need to thank me.  I knew that this would happen to you eventually.  All I did was give you a little push in the right direction.  I’m very proud of you.  You really are fulfilling your dreams to become a singer.”

Melanie nodded to that and she was very glad.  “The concert is on Saturday and it’s at 7:00 pm.  I would really love it if you could come to the concert.”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” said Mr. Wilkins with a smile.

Hazel was at home.  She and Lawrence and her mother Isabelle had just come home from the school.

“Mom?” she called out as Isabelle was about to go upstairs.

      “Yes, dear?” said Isabelle.

Hazel held out three concert tickets.  “Let’s go to a concert on Saturday night.”

“You want to go to a concert?”  Isabelle thought about it for a short moment and then she nodded and she smiled.  “That sounds like a good idea.  Sure, why not?  We’re not doing anything on Saturday night anyway.  Who’s singing?”

“Starry~en~Luv is singing.  It’s her first public concert.  We get to see her for the first time.”

Isabelle looked a bit excited.  “Starry~en~Luv is singing?  She’s that little girl on the radio who’s been singing that really famous song called ‘Dream’, right?”

“Yup, that’s her!” Hazel said excitedly.

“Let’s all go.  I want to see this girl for myself.  She has a really cute voice!  I’ll bet she’s really cute in person, too!”

Hazel smiled.  “That she is.  Thanks, Mom!”

“Hazel asked her mother and her little brother to come to my concert.  Justin is going to do the same thing with his family.  I just realized something, too.  Hazel’s mother knows I want to be a singer and that I recorded my song onto a tape a little while back…but she doesn’t know that I’m Starry~en~Luv.  This is going to be really interesting!  I hope a lot of people come to the concert!  They’ve heard me on the radio.  Now, everyone will get to see Starry~en~Luv, and they’ll know that it’s me!”

There were radio commercials that played a short portion of Starry~en~Luv’s song called “Dream” and then a female voice started to advertise the concert.

There was also a television commercial, but at one point, it only showed a shadow of an angel-like figure singing the song “Dream”.  In another part of the commercial, they showed her real self, but her face was turned away from the camera, or only a side view of her face was seen.  There was also a girl’s voiceover that advertised the concert.

“It’s Starry~en~Luv and her debut special live concert.  Be there at Ontario Place on Saturday, September 30th to see her for the first time!  Attendance is $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per child under 12.  You’ve heard her sing!  Now it’s time to see her sing!”

Tara Weston was at home when she saw the television commercial.  She was in the living room of her home and she was flipping through the channels when she saw the commercial that advertised Starry~en~Luv’s debut concert.

“No!  She doesn’t show her face completely!  You’re teasing me, Starry~en~Luv!” she shouted with excitement.  She was ecstatic.  “Oh, I’m definitely going to your concert!”

Julie Weston, who was her mother, looked at her because she was a little confused by the way Tara was acting right now.  Tara?” she said.

      “Yes, Mom?” said Tara.

“What in the world are you so hyper about?”

“Mom, let’s go to a concert on Saturday night!”

      And Julie was very surprised.

Kelsey Rayne was at home as well when she saw the television commercial.  She watched it without a word, but her thoughts were racing.  She wondered who this girl was.  She heard that she was the same age or close to the same age as she was.

“I wonder who she is, but I still think her song sucks,” she whispered.  “Maybe I should attend the concert after all, just to see who she is.”

Kelsey started thinking about other things.  She remembered the school newsletter, where one of the staff members was named Starry~en~Luv, but nobody knew which of the staff members was using that name.  She wondered if there was a connection.  She also wondered about Melanie, who was also in the newsletter committee.  She also wondered about the photo shoot back then.  Melanie was apparently working with Regal Records on a newfound singing career.

Kelsey was starting to wonder about something else that she was suspicious about.  And she also thought about something else that started to make her a little angry.

The next day, which was Friday, the day before the concert, an issue of the Havenly Times school newsletter was distributed to the students of Haven Millers Academy.  Melanie helped with the distribution and people started to notice something interesting in the newsletter.

It was an advertisement.  It was for Starry~en~Luv’s concert.

Anita was reading the newsletter in class during a short break and then she saw the advertisement.  She turned to Karen, who was sitting beside her.

“Hey, check this out.  What do you think of this?” asked Anita.

Karen took a look at the advertisement.  “It’s for the concert of that little girl singer on the radio.  That’s pretty cool.  It looks like she’s going to have her first public concert,” she said.

“I know that, but don’t you think there’s something odd about it?”

Karen looked up, puzzled.  “What do you mean?”

“Well, just think about it.  The author of the advice column calls herself Starry~en~Luv.  There’s a little girl singer on the radio named Starry~en~Luv.  Now, on the newsletter, there’s an advertisement for a concert that’s going to be done by Starry~en~Luv.”

“So?” said Karen, still looking puzzled.

Anita smacked her on the head with the newsletter.  “Come on, think!  Don’t you think that it’s more than a coincidence?  There’s rumors that Starry~en~Luv goes to our school.  I think it might be true!  And I think she’s part of the newsletter committee!”

“Oh!”  Karen finally realized.  Anita sighed and shook her head.  “You could be right.  Who are the girls in the newsletter committee?”

Anita thought about it.  “Well, there’s Hazel.  And then, there’s Melanie.  There’s Susan, also.  All three of them are in our class.  There’s another girl who’s the assistant editor who’s in Grade 6.  There’s also that little nerd of a girl in Grade 4.  That’s it.”

“Oh, I see.  So…one of them might be Starry~en~Luv herself!”

Anita nodded.  “That’s right.  I’ll bet it’s true!”

“Which one do you think it is?”

Anita thought for a moment.  “Well, let’s see.  Hazel has a nice voice but I don’t think she sings.  Some kids told me that Melanie can sing but I’ve never heard her sing.  I don’t know if Susan sings.  And I don’t know anything about that girl named Yung.”

Karen tried to think about those people for a while.  “I don’t know.  One of them could be Starry~en~Luv, but it’s hard to tell.  For all we know, it could be anyone of them or maybe none of them at all.  That’s possible, too.”

“I guess we’ll find out who she really is at the concert.  Let’s go to it,” said Karen.

“Yes, let’s go to the concert.  It’ll be on Saturday night.”

Melanie arrived at the Ontario Place early with Christina, since she was the star of the show.  There was a trailer there that had Starry~en~Luv’s name on it and she entered the trailer with Christina.  She was sitting in front of the dresser having her hair done by Lisa Rosiak and her makeup done by Mina Onodera.

At another part of the dressing room, Christina was looking over Melanie’s adorable costume with the fashion designer Cindy Paquin.  The costume was soft, flowing, white dress.  It seemed like two dresses in one, because the inside was similar to a halter dress and the outside that covered the upper back and sleeves and lower half of the skirt were see-through.  One side of the skirt was much longer than the other side.  There was a huge ribbon on the lower back as well.

“What a beautiful costume.  It’s perfect!” said Christina.

“Of course, it is.  Melanie looked so perfect in it during the dress rehearsal,” said Cindy.

After Mina was done applying a light touch of makeup on Melanie, she stood back.  “You have a little bit of blush again.   It’s perfect for you.  What do you think?” she asked.

Melanie smiled.  “It’s great.  Thank you!” she said.

“Okay, your hair is done now.  I just have to put this white ribbon in,” said Lisa.  After a moment, she was done.  “There you go!  You look great!”

“Thank you.  It’s perfect!”  She sighed and she clasped her hands together on her lap.  “I’m so nervous.  I hope I can do this right.  I hope lots of people come.  I hope I can reach their hearts.  I hope I can show my feelings.”

Christina was behind Melanie and she put her arms around her.  “You’ll do great, Melanie.  We planned everything to the last detail.  Everything will work out,” she said and she gave a wink.  The two of them began to laugh.

There were people lining up at the entrance to the concert area.  It was now a half hour before the concert was to start.  The people were showing their tickets to the persons at the entrance.  In another area, people were still buying tickets.  There were all kinds of people there, but most of them were young people or families.

There were people standing around or sitting on the seats from in front of the stage area all the way to the back.  The concert was to be held under the clear starry night.  The weather was perfect for this concert as well.  It was a little warm and there were few clouds in the sky and the moon shone brightly, but there were also many bright lights in the concert area.

The stage was empty except for a couple of people checking the sound systems.  To the left and right and above the stage were large projection screens that would show what the video cameras around the stage were seeing.

Christina was backstage and she looked through the curtains that were on the side of the stage.  “Melanie, check this out!” she said excitedly.

Melanie was in her costume.  She walked to where Christina was.

      “Take a peek outside.”

Melanie poked her head through the curtains and she gasped.  There were so many people in the audience already, and beyond that, she could see a long lineup of people getting into the concert.  In the distance, the parking lots were full.  There were a lot of people here already.

Melanie pulled back.  “There are so many people!”

“Of course,” a voice said to her.  Joseph King was approaching them.  “Your song is very popular on the radio and many people like it very much.  It’s only natural for a huge number of people to come to your first public concert, especially since you’re such a mystery to them right now.”

Christina smiled at her.  “That’s right, Melanie.  It was a great hit.  But they’ve never seen Starry~en~Luv before.  Tonight, people are going to see her for the first time and they’re going to find out that it’s actually you.  They’re in for a big surprise.”

Melanie looked nervous as she looked down and placed her hands at her heart.  Her heart was beating loud and fast and she felt like it was going to burst.  “Oh, my…”

      “Melanie?” said Christina.

“Are you alright?” asked Mr. King.

“I’m…so…nervous…”  Melanie’s hands were shaking a little.  She looked up at the producer and her manager.  “Can I really do this?  What if I mess up?  What if I forget all my songs?”

Mr. King went behind Melanie and squeezed her shoulders and Melanie was startled.  “You’re as tense as a rock, Melanie,” he said, and he did it again.

“Ouch…”  Melanie relaxed her shoulders and she sighed and looked down.

“You’re definitely nervous.”  He stood next to her and she looked up at him.  “Remember what I told you during your first recording session?”

Melanie tried to remember and she nodded.  “Yes.  You told me to just focus on the music and don’t look at you or Christina or anyone or anything.  I just have to focus on the music that’s in front of me,” she said softly.

Christina knelt down in front of Melanie.  “That’s good advice, you know.  I think you have to apply that here, too, but in a slightly different way.  In a concert, you have to look at your audience as if you were singing just for them.  That is what you’re going to be doing anyway.  You’re singing for them.  Do you also remember what I said when you called me one night saying that some kids in your school didn’t like your song?”

Melanie nodded to that, too.  “Yes.  You said I can’t satisfy everybody.  I can reach the hearts and convey my feelings to a lot of people but not every single one of them and that no singer has ever done that.  All I have to do is do my best to do what I love to do.”

“That’s also good advice,” said Mr. King.  “Not everyone will like you, but a lot of people already like you.  For a first-time singer, you’re way ahead of everything.  You just do your best to be a singer, because that’s what you are.  You just do your best to follow your dreams.”

Christina stood up and Mr. King stood beside her.

“I know you’ll do your best.  This is what you’ve always wanted to do,” said Christina.

Melanie smiled up at them and she sighed and was starting to relax a lot more.  “I couldn’t have gotten this far without you.  Thank you so much for helping to fulfill my dream.  I want to keep on singing.  I want to keep on conveying me feelings and reach people’s hearts.  That’s what I want to do!  Because…because I’m Starry~en~Luv!”

It was time for the concert to begin.

There was a young woman standing on the very left side of the stage but no one could see her because of the darkness.  Joseph King, the producer, was standing behind the sound equipment with several technicians.  He nodded to the young woman on stage.

      “Let’s begin,” said Joseph King.

The young woman received the cue and she spoke into a microphone.  “Hello to everyone!  Welcome on this close of the summer time!  Welcome to Starry~en~Luv’s debut live concert!  You’ve heard her sing, and now it’s time to hear her sing!  ‘Dream’!”

At the same time, Mr. King was speaking into the headset of a walkie-talkie, giving commands on what was about to be done next.

Lights brightened on the stage.  People in the audience, either sitting on the seats or standing, watched intently as laser beams began to light up the stage area.  Music was beginning to play through the many large speakers that had been set up.

“I can’t believe it!  It’s starting!” said one of the girls near the front.  She was part of a group of kids from Melanie’s class.  It was Martha.  The other people with her were Joanne, Susan, and a few other girls from the same class.

“We’re going to see Starry~en~Luv for the first time!” said Joanne.

But Susan just looked on with a smile on her face.  Martha and Joanne looked at her.

“Hey, aren’t you excited about this, Susan?” asked Martha.

“Of course, I am.  But I already know who Starry~en~Luv is.”

Martha and Joanne looked at her with great surprise.  “What!  Who is she?!” they exclaimed.

Susan smiled at them both.  “You’ll see in a few minutes.”

Hazel was sitting in the audience and her little brother Lawrence was between her and her mother Isabelle.  When Hazel looked at Lawrence, she was glad, because he seemed very different.  His attention was completely taken by what was happening on the stage.  Hazel held a large camera on her lap and was ready to take pictures when she gets the chance.

Justin was also in the audience.  With him were his family, which included his mother, his father, his older brother, and his younger sister.  They looked on as the concert was just about to start.

Two boys named Erin and Adrien were also there, the ones who liked Starry~en~Luv’s song.  The only thing they didn’t know was that when their friend Danny, who was also with them, had spilled food all over Melanie’s uniform, he had actually spilled food on Starry~en~Luv herself.  But, right now, they did not know that the girl they did that to back then is the same girl who’s going to be on stage just a short time from now.

Hazel’s old friends were there, too.  Tara led the group, and with her were Dinah, Anita, and Karen.  Some distance behind them, near the very back, was Kelsey and her family.  Natasha and her family were standing close to them.  Ginalyn and Mary, who were the ones who bullied Melanie in school, were in another part of the audience and they looked on, wondering what was going to happen next.  Jim and Jimson and their families were also there.

In another part of the audience, Rachel, her big brother Jeffrey, and the rest of her family watched.  Rachel watched with great excitement and very wide eyes.  Even those little ones who were making fun of Hazel’s little brother Lawrence were there.  The other staff members of the school newsletter committee, Yung, Kathy, Terry, and Darren, were also at the concert.  The two lovebirds from the Grade 9 class, Christopher and Gale, were near the back of the audience and they watched.  Standing near them was Patricia, who was in the same grade.  Christopher and Patricia had been the ones who participated in an end-of-the-school-year play called “Forever Love”.

Those staff members of Regal Records who worked with Melanie to make this concert a reality stood backstage as they watched.  Mr. King and Christina were at the sound equipment with several sound technicians.  Christina was starting to look nervous herself.  Mr. Wilkins arrived at the scene and Christina and Mr. King shook hands with him.

Mr. King heard on his headset that Melanie was ready and he gave the command to start.

The music had just started and a circular shape opened up on the stage floor.  From below the stage, a circular platform started rising up and standing on it was Starry~en~Luv, her back turned to the audience.  As she was raised from under the stage, she stood with her hands clasped together in front of her and a microphone in one of her hands.  She was looking down and her eyes were closed and she had a smile on her face.  Her beautiful white costume sparkled and shimmered and flew about in the gentle breeze which was part of the special effects.  Laser light beamed all over the place and other kinds of white and colored lights added to the visual effects.  Sparkling diamond dust flew around the stage and upwards.

Everyone watched in awe as the beginning of Starry~en~Luv’s song was playing.

Starry~en~Luv turned gracefully around, her eyes still closed.  The three big projection screens showed her face to the audience as she turned around, her costume flying around her.  She held out her microphone in her hand to the side.  People started to cheer for her.

People who attended Melanie’s school, except for the newsletter staff, received the shock of a lifetime.

      “Melanie?” said Tara Weston.

      “You’re…” Martha started.

“Starry~en~Luv?” said Natasha.  She looked to the side.  Kelsey had a wide-eyed look on her face.

Isabelle was in shock. “Melanie?” she said, and she looked over at Hazel.  “Hazel!  You didn’t tell me that Melanie was Starry~en~Luv!” she exclaimed.

Hazel smiled at her.  “It was a secret.  But now everyone knows.”

On the stage, Starry~en~Luv opened her eyes to the audience and she smiled a little more brightly.

Starry~en~Luv sang perfectly and she moved with her singing as well!  People in the audience were in awe and amazement.  As she finished her song, she raised her mic in the air and she posed in a very elegant and beautiful way.  People in the audience began to applaud very, very loudly!

At the sound equipment, Christina was ecstatic.  “Mr. King, she’s so amazing!” she exclaimed.

Mr. King smiled and nodded.  “That she is, Miss Lane.  I am very proud of her.  Listen to that crowd cheering!  It’s almost overwhelming.”

Mr. Wilkins was with them and he smiled as well.  Christina glanced over at him.  “Mr. Wilkins, I’m so glad that you found her and told Regal Records about her.”

“Indeed.  You were the one who started this all, Mr. Wilkins,” said Mr. King.

“I just gave her a little push.  Melanie has always wanted to be a singer,” said Mr. Wilkins.

Two spotlights shone on Starry~en~Luv as she walked closer to the front of the stage and she smiled with eyes that seemed very joyful and emotional at the same time.  She almost looked like she was about to cry from the joy she felt, but she was not going to cry at all.

“Everyone, thank you for coming to my first public concert tonight!” she said into the mic and her voice carried over to the entire audience.  People were still cheering very loudly.

“She’s so pretty!” shouted Rachel, looking with great awe.  “I can’t believe how great she sings!”

Starry~en~Luv continued to speak into the mic.  “I’m so happy that you all came tonight!  It’s always been my dream to become a singer!  I want to convey my feelings and reach people’s hearts!”

Hazel and Isabelle cried out with excitement.  Aaaaaahhhhh!  She’s so cool!!!”

Justin was smiling in the audience.  “Very good, Melanie…” he whispered.

“That little brat’s a singer?  Am I dreaming this?” said Ginalyn, one of the girls who made fun of Melanie.

      “I can’t believe that she’s actually Starry~en~Luv!” said Christopher, a student from Grade 9.

“She sings a lot better in person!”  Tara said from somewhere else in the audience.

“I can’t believe it…It really is true…It’s not just true.  It’s actually her!” whispered Kelsey.  She had a wide-eyed look of awe on her face.  She slammed her hands down on a railing and that made her parents and Natasha and her parents puzzled.

“Kelsey?” said Natasha, who looked surprised.

Kelsey’s parents were also quite surprised.  “Kelsey, what’s going on?” said her mother.

“Are you alright?  What’s wrong?” said her father.

“In the school newsletter…that really was you…and…that time when I saw you in that car with that lady named Christina Lane…from Regal Records…that time…in the photo shoot…that other time…in the school play…and in….”

Kelsey looked absolutely stressed out and she looked like she was about to pass out.

“Kelsey!” Natasha called out.  “Snap out of it!”

Kelsey did snap out of it and she gasped and looked up with wide eyes and extreme shock.

Susan smiled and she nodded.  “You’re a beautiful singer, Melanie…” she said softly.

Starry~en~Luv bowed down to the audience.  “Please enjoy the rest of the concert!  I have 6 more songs for you all!  This next song I’m going to sing for you, it’s called…’My Heart’!”  The audience began to applaud again loudly as the music began to play and Starry~en~Luv started to walk back to the center of the stage.

Starry~en~Luv faced the audience with her eyes closed as she got ready to convey her feelings through her next song!

My heart, oh, my heart, I feel like it’s been broken

Shattered pieces blown away, forgotten and forsaken

Carried away by the cold wind of the winter storm

That took my life away, too much pain to form

I feel like the whole world has crashed around me

I want to hide away, to a place where I can be free

But it might be nothing more than a cruel illusion

The cold world’s chill has broken my concentration

If only there was a way to pick up the pieces and move on (If only there was a way)

If only there was a way to dream again and carry on (If only there was)

Why does my heart continue to dream despite it all? (Why does it continue?)

The starry love dream, I hope would give me a call (Oh, the starry love dream!)

(My heart must love again…)

Why do I still dream when my heart has been broken?

Will my dreams be nothing but a memory forgotten?

Please help me find another way to realize my dream

Push away the cold currents of the torrential stream

(My heart) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(My heart) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

So far away, even if you’re so far away from me

I‘ll never forget you, I’ll fulfill my promise, you see

I feel sad and I feel lonely, like I’m the only one here

But I know that you’re here, to chase away my fear

My heart is longing for you; I don’t want to be alone

We have to bear the pain, the sadness, the hurt, all alone

Oh, I want to keep dreaming, oh, I want to keep singing

Diamond dust flying in the sky, my broken heart is crying

There is a way to pick up the pieces and move on (There is a way)

There is a way to dream again and carry on (There is always a way)

My heart needs to continue to dream despite it all (My heart must continue)

The starry love dream, I know it will give me a call (Oh, the starry love dream!)

(My heart, oh, my heart!) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(Love again, oh, love again!) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

It was a magical night for a lot of people, especially for Melanie, who had become Starry~en~Luv.  She had 5 more songs after “My Heart”.  Of those songs, 2 of them were based on 2 stories that she had read from a very special friend.  They were 2 songs based on 2 stories written by Alison.

As the audience cheered Melanie on, somewhere outside the concert area, there was an elderly woman who had a calm but happy look on her face.

Alison did not have enough money to get a concert ticket but she did not have to.  She was able to catch a glimpse of the concert and hear a few of the songs sung by Starry~en~Luv from just outside the concert area where people would not be able to see her.  She smiled.

“Thank you, Melanie.  Thank you.  Thank you for making my stories into your songs,” Alison whispered.  Alison began to walk away and she went to her shopping cart.  She began to push the shopping cart full of plastic bags and she walked away.

People were cheering loudly while Starry~en~Luv was on the stage after her last song of the night.  She was waving at everyone with a bright smile on her beautiful face.  She really looked like an angel to a lot of people in the audience.

Kelsey turned around and she began to leave without saying a word.  Natasha noticed that and she glanced at her, wondering why she was leaving already.  Kelsey’s parents were also puzzled by that.

“Kelsey, where are you going?” asked her father.

She stopped and she turned around towards her mother and father.  She had an unusual look on her face that seemed terribly sad all of a sudden.  They were taken aback.  Natasha saw that, too, and she was also very surprised.

“Mom, Dad…please…can we go home now?” Kelsey whispered with her voice sounding monotone.

Her mother looked very much concerned for her so she nodded.  “Okay, Kelsey.  We’ll go home now,” she said.

Kelsey and her family began to walk away.  Natasha just looked on, confused.  She wondered what was really going on with Kelsey.

Tara, Dinah, Anita, and Karen were altogether and they were still very much in awe.  They all looked at each other with surprised looks on their faces.

“That girl Hazel made friends with…” said Karen.

“I thought she would be a bad person…” said Anita.  “But if you can sing like that, how can you be a bad person?”

Dinah shook her head.  “No, our parents were wrong for saying those things and the other kids were wrong for saying those things.  But now…I don’t know how we can face Hazel and I don’t know how we can face Melanie anymore…after all those things.”

Tara looked up at Melanie again on stage and she remembered what she said just before school had started once again, when she found her in the library.  Tara had told her that she wanted to know more about Melanie.  She wanted to know what was good about her.

“But, if it’s okay with you, I’d like to know more about you.  Because I want to know what’s good about you.”

Melanie thought of something.  It was her ability to touch people’s hearts through songs that she wrote.  Melanie looked up at the girl and she smiled slightly.

“I guess there’s one way you could find out,” she said.

      “How?” the girl asked.

      “On the radio,” said Melanie.

The girl seemed puzzled.  “What?  What do you mean ‘on the radio’?  You mean on the news radio or something?”

Melanie shook her head slightly.  “No.  Not the news radio.  I meant, on a pop music radio station.  Like 92.5 FM, for example.”

When Tara remembered the song that was on the radio that Melanie was talking about, everything fell into place.  Now Tara knew why Hazel became friends with Melanie, despite all the rumors that followed her regarding her politician father.  Now she knew what was very good about Melanie, and it was something that was very good.

“Now, I know…” whispered Tara.  “Now I know what’s good about you.”

“I can’t believe that little brat in school is actually that little girl pop singer on the radio named Starry~en~Luv,” said Ginalyn, who was one of the two girls who made fun of Melanie.  Her friend Mary was beside her as well.

“What was that song that we tore up back then when we found her in the school park?” asked Mary, looking very shocked.

“It’s the song she sang just earlier.  I remembered it was called ‘My Heart’.”

“All this time, she was actually a pop singer?”

Ginalyn nodded and she frowned.  “I can’t believe this.  I can’t believe this at all.  What am I supposed to think?  I have no idea!  I feel so humiliated!”

Some distances away from them, there were three students in Melanie’s school who were just starting high school.  They were Christopher, Gale, and Patricia.  Christopher and Gale were standing together.  Gale leaned her head on Christopher’s shoulder and Christopher looked down at her and put an arm around his girlfriend.

“That’s the girl who told me that I should have the courage to tell you that I was in love with you back then,” said Gale.

Christopher smiled at her and they were quiet for a while.  “She’s a very good girl.”  He looked up and saw Patricia a short distance away from them.  Patricia smiled at them and she nodded and gave thumbs up.  He smiled at her, too.

Rachel, the little girl who wanted to be Melanie’s friend but her brother didn’t allow her at first, looked extremely happy to be here.  She tugged at her big brother’s sleeve and Jeffrey looked down at her.

“She’s not a bad person,” she said softly.

After a long hesitation, Jeffrey smiled at that.  “You’re right.  She’s a very good person,” he said to her.  “From now on, you can be friends with her.  I won’t stop you anymore.”

      “Thanks!”

The members of the newsletter committee, Yung, Kathy, Terry, and Darren, all came together and they all seemed to have enjoyed this wonderful concert.

“I think we should make this into a major story in the next newsletter,” said Terry, who was in charge of the entire group.

Kathy nodded excitedly.  “Yeah, let’s do it,” she said.

Darren smiled and he nodded, too.  “She’s part of our school.  She’s one of our own.  And she’s a famous idol pop singer now.”

“That’s a wonderful idea.  I can just imagine the newsletter full of pictures of her,” said Yung, smiling slightly.

Isabelle held onto Lawrence, who seemed very happy.

Hazel stood up from her chair with her camera.  “Mom, wait right here!  I’m going to take pictures of her up close!” she said.

“Okay!  Take lots of pictures, Hazel!” said Isabelle.

Hazel left and went down one of the aisles and she got to the front and she ended up near the stage.  Justin and Susan followed her.  They all looked up as Melanie waved at all these music fans.

“Melanie!” shouted Hazel.  She had to call out extra loud because of the screaming fans.

Melanie heard her voice and she looked down and she smiled.  Hazel smiled and she held up her camera.  She was wordlessly saying that she wanted to take pictures of her and Melanie nodded to that.  Hazel brightened and she started taking pictures of Melanie.

Susan waved at Melanie as well and Melanie smiled at her.  Susan held up her sketchbook so that Melanie could see what was on it.  It was a drawing of Melanie singing on stage and she looked like a beautiful angel.  Melanie’s hand went to her mouth, surprised, and she almost laughed.  Justin was there as well and he gave thumbs up to her and Melanie waved at him.

Staff members backstage were so amazed by the success of the concert.  Mr. King and Mr. Wilkins and Christina were shaking hands with each other and they talked.  They were extremely satisfied by the way the concert turned out to be.  It was absolutely beautiful!

“Thank you for coming to my first public concert tonight.  I’m so happy that you all came tonight.  It’s always been my dream to become a singer.  I want to convey my feelings and reach people’s hearts.  I want to keep singing…I want to keep singing…just for you…”

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “Hello, everyone!”

Hazel: “Melanie!  You did it!  Your first public concert was a big hit!”

Justin: “Congratulations to you, Melanie!”

Melanie: “Oh, thank you so very much.  I did my best.  Now I can really say that I’m a singer!  I’ve really fulfilled my dream!  Sometimes, I wonder if this is all happening in my sleep, but I’m wrong!  This is reality now!”

Justin: “That’s right, Melanie.  You did your best to make your dream come true.  Now, you really are an idol pop singer.”

Hazel: “That’s right!  Now everybody knows who you really are, Starry~en~Luv!  Melanie is Starry~en~Luv and Starry~en~Luv is Melanie!  People at school are going to be asking for your autograph and they’re going to want to ask you lots and lots of questions!”

Melanie: “Oh, my!  A lot of people loved the concert.  I can see some of them were kids in our school.  They’re going to come chasing me!  But I think it’s kind of funny!”

Justin: “Just be graceful about it.  It’ll be hard to accept being a well-loved idol.”

Melanie: “Oh, of course.  I’ll do that.  But you know what?”

Hazel: “What?”

Melanie: “Everyone knows who I am now.  That means that Grandma Annabelle will also know who I am.  I wonder what’s going to happen.  I’m a little nervous.”

Hazel: “Oh, don’t worry about her.  I’m sure she’s going to be star-struck, too!”

Hazel and Justin: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!”

Melanie: “Episode 19: Now everybody knows who I really am
