Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I’m already working to become a singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m Hazel, her number one fan!”

Justin: “And I’m Justin, also a number one fan.”

Melanie: “I can’t believe it.  I was so sad last time.  Someone must have called the police and complained about Alison at the park.  So the police came and asked her to leave.  Now she’s gone.  Who knows if I’ll ever see her again?  She was such a nice person.”

Hazel: “People can be so judgmental.  Attitude like that just makes me mad!”

Justin: “Just because she looks poor and is homeless doesn’t mean that she’s a bad person.  She was quite the opposite.  Isn’t that right, Melanie?”

Melanie: “She was a very good person.  She was even a story writer.”

Hazel: “And a very good story writer, too.”

Justin: “But she left her stories with you, right?”

Melanie: “That’s right.  Just before she had to go, she gave me all of her stories.  All of them!  She asked me to make songs about them.  I promised that I would.  I’m going to do my best.  I’m going to turn her stories into my songs, so she can touch people’s hearts through me!  That’s what she wanted to do with her stories.”

Justin: “She knows that you’re Starry~en~Luv now.”

Hazel: “Yeah.  She’s the only one who knows, other than the people at Regal Records and me and Justin.  That’s it.”

Melanie: “You know what?  Let’s not stay sad anymore.  I don’t think Alison would like that.  She’ll want us to be happy.  She’ll want me to do my best in what I promised to do for her.”

Hazel: “That’s the spirit, Melanie!”

Justin: “Go for it.”

Melanie: “It’s time for Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

There were people dining at the outside patio of a downtown Toronto restaurant and there was a radio playing loudly on one of the tables.  While people ate their food and chatted with each other on that sunny summer day, the radio played its various kinds of modern music.

“Hey, there, welcome back to AM 640, your number one source for music that you want to hear!” said the young male announcer on the radio.  “We’re taking requests right now for any songs that you’d like to hear.  Wherever you are or whatever you’re doing, if you’re at work or in summer school classes, just call in and we’ll take your requests.  And we have one caller right now!  Caller, you’re on at AM 640!”

      “Hi!” said the caller.

“Hey, how’s it going?” said the announcer.

“I’m great, thanks!”  The caller sounded like a young teenage girl.

“That’s awesome.  So what would you like to hear right now?”

“I want to hear that new song that sung by that new little girl artist.  Her name is Starry~en~Luv,” said the caller.

“Ah, you want to hear ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv.”

      “That’s right!”

“No problem!  We’ve been getting tons of requests for this song.  But that’s alright, because we want to play what everyone wants to hear.  Here we go.  ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv!”

Dream…

Oh, make a wish upon a star (wish upon a star)

Oh, make your dream come true (your dream come true)

Dreaming a dream

The quest for a wish might make you happy, make you sad

But in the end, it will all be worth it, you will be glad!

Just dream!

A young woman who was sitting down having her lunch took off her sunglasses and she looked up at the radio.  It was Christina Lane.  She looked at the radio that was playing and she listened to the song of the little girl whose new singing career she was managing.  She smiled with great satisfaction.

“This is so good,” she said softly.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 15: My heart skipped a beat!  It was a big hit!

John Wilkins was in his house and he was watering a small potted plant that was in the kitchen.  The radio was on and it was playing the song “Dream”, sung by the new singer Starry~en~Luv.  As the song was playing on the radio, he paused and put down the water pitcher that he was using.

Mr. Wilkins went over to the radio and he turned up the volume higher than he would normally have it.  Melanie’s song was playing loudly.  Her voice seemed to almost echo and it was very beautiful and angelic.  She sounded so much like a fully established professional singer, even though this was only her debut song.

Dreaming a dream, make your dream come true

Sing a song or write a story, anything you want to do

Whatever good thing your dream might just be

Never lose your hope, never lose your energy

Dreaming a dream (Just dream)

Dreaming a dream, make a wish upon a star

Go on a journey, you’ll go to many places afar

Always remember that I will stay and walk with you

And keep in your heart whatever it is you want to do

Dreaming a dream (Just dream)

Just dream!

His cat named Fluffy started to rub her head against his feet.  Mr. Wilkins picked up his cat and held her as he stood near the radio, listening to Melanie’s debut song.  He stroked the cat’s small head and Fluffy purred.  She stopped and looked at the radio as if she was also listening to the music.

Mr. Wilkins smiled with amazement.  “My goodness, Melanie, you did a very, very good job,” he said out loud.

There were millions of young people in the province of Ontario and millions more in the other provinces of Canada.  Many of them heard the debut song of this new artist.  The song played on hundreds of modern music radio stations across the entire country, from the west to the east and from the south to the north and in the big cities and the small towns and any other places that were in between.

Hundreds of radio stations across the country were swamped with requests to play the song from early in the morning through the afternoon up to late at night and sometimes even in the fringe hours of the night.  Many people wanted to hear this song.  And the radio stations did their best to follow through for their listeners.

Wake up from your comfortable and peaceful sleep

Remember the dream you had while you slept deep

Let the warm golden sunshine through your window (sunshine through the window)

The first thing to do is smile while you hug your pillow (hug your pillow)

And today, the most important thing that you should do (you should do)

Will be to come closer to making your dream come true (make your dream come true)

Just dream!

It was listened by a bunch of kids who were showing off skateboarding skills near the grand-looking City Hall in downtown Toronto, which is where Melanie’s father Premiere Mark Thompson was still working at along with his wife Sarah Thompson.

However, the two of them would not be listening to any music at all, since they had far too much work to do.  They were still working to try to clear the Premiere’s name of the accusations that followed him around.

Melanie was in casual but pretty summer clothes.  She was in the building of Regal Records and she was quickly walking down the hall.  She saw the room that Christina had asked her to go to when she was ready and it was a meeting room.  The door was slightly ajar and she opened it fully and she looked inside.

Christina saw her first.  “Melanie!  Come right in!” she said excitedly.

Melanie smiled brightly and she walked in and closed the door.  Their producer, Joseph King was also there, along with several other staff members.

“I’m glad you don’t get lost anymore.  I think you know where everything is in this building by now, Melanie,” said the producer Mr. King.

Melanie nodded to that.  “Oh, yes.  I’m totally used to it by now.”

“Good.  That’s great.”  Mr. King looked around.  “Everyone’s here, right?”

Melanie looked around and Christina nodded.  “Looks like it,” Christina said cheerfully.

“Good.  Let’s get right to business.”  Everyone was sitting down, except for Christina, who was standing behind Melanie’s chair, because there were not enough seats.  In fact, since there were so many people in the room, a little more than 30 of them, one-third of them were standing up.

Mr. King addressed everyone in the meeting room.  The other 30 people in the room where people who worked directly with Christina and Mr. King regarding Starry~en~Luv’s suddenly newfound singing career.  They included the makeup artists, hairstylists, costume designers, marketing staff, recording studio staff, photographers, vocal trainers, dance trainers, their supervisors, among many others.

“I have some wonderful news for everyone,” said Mr. King, who smiled with satisfaction.

Everyone looked at Mr. King with anticipation.

“Starry~en~Luv’s debut single, ‘Dream’, after playing for just 2 weeks on the music stations across the country, has reached number one on the pop music charts.”

Melanie gasped with great surprised, her eyes went wide open.  She was totally surprised.  Christina was also very surprised and she had a big delighted smile.  Everyone in the room was very pleasantly surprised as well.

      “Oh, that’s great!”

      “Awesome!”

“Man, I just knew this would happen!”

      “That’s so wonderful!”

“That’s great, congratulations to you, Starry~en~Luv!”

Everyone had their attention on Melanie, who looked around the room at everybody with wide-eyed excitement.  Her shocked face began to slowly change into a bright cheerful look.  She was totally overwhelmed with excitement that she could feel her heart pounding.  It nearly skipped a beat!  Several of the staff members began to applaud her.

Mr. King smiled at the scene and glanced over at Melanie.  “A very good job well done, Melanie,” he said to her.

Melanie smiled at him and she stood up and took a little bow.  “Thank you so much!” she said with great delight.  She almost could not speak, for she was so surprised.  She looked up at Christina, who put an arm around her shoulder.

“You did really well, Melanie,” said Christina.

Melanie shook her head with a smile.  “Oh, no, without you, I couldn’t have done this.  I couldn’t have done this without everyone’s help.”

When the applause ended, Mr. King addressed everyone in the room once again as Melanie took her seat and everyone paid attention.

“It’s really amazing.  Melanie, you’re the youngest artist to become part of Regal Records.  And you’re definitely one of the best that this recording company has ever worked with.  Someday, I want you to be THE best that this company has ever worked with.  I’m very proud of you.”

“Thank you, Mr. King,” Melanie said softly.

“It’s also the first time that we have produced a young artist whose debut single reached the top of the pop charts.  Radio stations from all over the country are playing this song even as we speak.  Listeners are tuning in and they’re calling the radio stations asking them to play this song.  Many people are enjoying hearing about it.”

      “That’s so wonderful…” Christina said.

“Manager and singer are doing everything right,” said Mr. King.

Christina and Melanie smiled at each other excitedly.

“You’re breaking a lot of records.  Christina, you’re also the youngest manager for an artist ever, and that goes for all record companies in this country.  And your first job just happens to be a singer whose debut song ends up being number one.  There are a lot of records that you and Melanie are breaking.  I’m even doing that myself.  I’ve never produced for any singer who’s less than 14 years old.  I’m very proud of both of you.”

“Thank you so much, Mr. King,” said Christina.  “We look forward to continuing to work with you.  Everything’s going so well.  We should keep going while things are hot!”

“That’s exactly right,” said Mr. King.  “That’s why we should now be working on Starry~en~Luv’s first concert appearance!”

Melanie gasped again.  This was what she was hoping it would lead to.  She has had her audition.  She has had her debut single released on the radio stations across the country.  The next step was to work on her first concert performance.

“Starry~en~Luv will be making her debut performance.  I’m sure many people are wondering what she looks like.  They’ve never seen her.  Only people at the radio stations have seen her pictures,” said Mr. King.  He turned to the surprised Melanie.  “Melanie, by having your debut performance, everyone’s going to have their first real introduction to the new pop singer, Starry~en~Luv!”

Melanie was absolutely ecstatic.  Her hands went to her heart as if her heart had stopped.  She was so speechless and her face was practically frozen with shock.

Mr. King laughed.  “Christina, I think Melanie needs some water.”

Christina looked down.  “Whoa.  Melanie, take it easy,” she said cheerfully and held her by the shoulders.  Melanie shook her head and tried to start breathing again.

“I’m so sorry.  I was just…I was just really shocked.  Everything is going so perfectly!  I feel like I’m in some kind of dream,” said Melanie.

“I’ll get you some water,” said Christina.  She was about to walk over to the water cooler at the corner of the room but someone had already poured a cup of water for Melanie.  Christina accepted the cup from the young girl who had poured it.  “Thanks.”  She went back to Melanie and gave her the cup.  “Here, Melanie.  Drink up.”

Melanie drank her water.  “Thank you.”

Mr. King smiled.  “Well, then.  Make sure you take it easy.  I don’t want you to have a heart attack so early in your new singing career.  In fact, don’t have heart attack at all.”

Some people in the room laughed at that.  Melanie just smiled.

“Okay.  We have some initial plans for this concert already.  They’re not finalized.  I just wanted to share them with you and I want to hear some ideas and comments and things like that,” said Mr. King.  “We’re thinking about having the concert in a large auditorium that’s located close by here in downtown Toronto.  We haven’t booked one yet, so I’m open to any other suggestions on where we can setup the first live performance of Starry~en~Luv.”

“An auditorium sounds like a good idea.  But it should probably be something very large, due to the popularity of the debut single on the radio,” said one of the staff members.

“That’s right, definitely.  I’m sure there would be a lot of people who would want to attend,” said another one.

Mr. King glanced over at Christina.  “What do you think, Christina?”

Christina smiled cheerfully.  “The larger the auditorium, the better, I agree with that.”  She glanced down at Melanie.  “What do you think, Melanie?”

Melanie was thinking for a while.  “An auditorium would be nice.  But if the song is so popular and a lot of people want to attend my first concert, no matter how big the auditorium is, it’s not going to fit everyone.”

Christina looked a little puzzled.  Mr. King glanced down at Melanie.  “Please feel free to tell me any ideas you might have, Melanie.  Don’t think that I won’t listen to you just because you’re a kid.  I want to hear what you think.”

Melanie hesitated and then nodded.  “I was thinking.  What if we have the concert outside?”

“Outside?” asked Christina.  “What do you mean?”

“I mean outside.  Everyone can see it.  If a lot of people come, there’s always a lot of room.”

Some of the staff members nodded to that idea.  “I think that’s a great idea.  I think having the concert outside would be great!”

“But, of course, we have to know where outside,” asked Mr. King.

Melanie thought of a quick idea and she smiled brightly.  “What about the lakeshore?”

Everyone glanced at Melanie.  “Ah, the lakeshore,” said the photography director, Tom Walsh.  “That’s where we had your photo shoot, Melanie.”

“Yes.  I noticed it was really beautiful there and that was only day time.  I’m guessing it would looks so lovely when it’s night time with all the lights of the big buildings glittering above and the stars glittering and the lake behind,” said Melanie.

Christina smiled and looked up at Mr. King.  “Well?  How about it, Mr. King?  Why don’t we have the concert at the lakeshore?  Like around Ontario Place, for example?  Then we can have the performance at night.  That area looks so beautiful at night.”

Mr. King nodded immediately.  “That’s an awesome idea.  I’m all for it.  Who else thinks it’s a great idea?”

Everyone seemed to agree.  “It’s an awesome idea!  Let’s do the concert at the lakeshore!”

“Let’s make this a really big debut, Melanie,” said Mr. King.

Melanie smiled excitedly.  “Yes, Mr. King!”

After the meeting, Melanie and Christina were standing at the exit of the meeting room and everyone who was exiting the room passed them by.  Each and everyone shook their hands.  They all complimented Melanie for her amazing singing talent and Christina for being a talented manager for her.

Mr. King was the last to leave and he stopped by Melanie and Christina.

“Like I said, I’m very proud of both of you.  Let’s keep working together,” he said to them.

“Thank you so much, Mr. King.  We look forward to continuing to do our best,” said Christina.

“Thank you so very much, Mr. King.  We’ll do our best,” said Melanie.

When he left and everyone else had left, Melanie and Christina looked around them and saw that there was no one there in the hallways.  They both looked at each other and they grabbed each other’s hands and began to jump up and down, screaming and giggling like excited and delighted little girls.

Another week had passed by.  The song ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv was still number one on the Canadian pop charts.  The popularity of the song seemed to continue to increase every single day.

On a public transit bus, there was a young woman who was listening to her portable radio walkman.  Her eyes were closed and she was humming.  The song that was playing through her earphones was ‘Dream’.

The same song was playing inside a car that was driven by a couple of college students

There was a mother hanging clothes in the backyard of her house.  She heard the song playing and she turned around.  Her son and daughter turned up the volume when Starry~en~Luv’s song began to play and their mother smiled at them.

At a radio station called Flow 94 FM, inside a broadcasting room, the song was playing through speakers and two radio announcers were listening to it as well.

“You were listening to ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv!  That’s a really amazing song, isn’t it?” said the female announcer.  “It’s been number one for the past week and I have a feeling that it’s going to be that way for a very long time.  She has the voice of an angel though I heard she’s only an elementary school student.”

“No kidding.  It’s amazing when someone that young rises up and shows everyone everywhere what she can really do,” said the male announcer.  “That’s the kind of thing I like to see.  Instead of growing up and doing things that might harm themselves and others around them, this little girl has total control of her life.”

“I wonder what this girl is like.  They didn’t give us her real name.  They only gave us her stage name, Starry~en~Luv.”

“But it’s a cool stage name.  You got to admit that.”

      “Oh, that’s for sure!”

“Well, I heard that this new girl is going to be performing at her first live concert.  No details have been given yet.  But when that day comes and everyone shows up at that concert, everyone’s going to find out who this girl really is and what she’s like,” said the male announcer.

“I’ll bet she’s really cute, too.  She has a beautiful voice, she must also be a very beautiful girl,” said the female announcer.  “Oh, wait, you know what, it’s commercial time.  So we’ll be back after these words from our sponsor.  You’re listening to Flow 94 FM.”

Melanie was at home and she was having dinner with Grandma Annabelle.  Grandma, as usual, rarely said anything while they were eating.  But what she would do was look at the newspaper that was laid out beside her.  Occasionally, she would turn the page.

In the background, there was a radio playing.  Melanie had suggested earlier that the radio be turned on while they were eating and Grandma thought it might be okay to have that.  Grandma also did not mind if Melanie tuned into one of the pop music stations.  Thank goodness for that.  Melanie wanted to catch her own song playing while she was having dinner.

There was a young boy who had called the radio station.

“Hi!  Can you play ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv?  It’s a really catchy song.  I like it a lot and my sister likes it a lot, too,” said the young boy who was the caller.

“Sure, no problem,” said the young woman who was hosting the radio program.  “Everyone seems to want to hear this new singer sing.  And why shouldn’t they hear her?  She has an amazing singing talent for someone who is still an elementary school student.  Here we go.  ‘Dream’ by Starry~en~Luv.”

The song started to play.  Melanie slowed down her eating and she listened in.  She listened to her own voice singing her debut song.  It was her voice.  But in a way, it also wasn’t her.  She felt that it wasn’t her who was singing that song.  It felt like Starry~en~Luv was someone else.  When Melanie felt that, she felt like she was listening to the voice of an angel.  She began to blush a little.

Melanie thought in her mind.  Am I really that good a singer?  I’m so…overwhelmed.  I can’t believe I made it this far already!

Grandma looked up at the radio and could not help notice the voice of a little girl singing what seems to be a very popular pop song lately.  Melanie noticed that and she wondered what Grandma was thinking.  Grandma continued to look at the radio for a long time.

“Grandma, are you listening to that girl’s singing?” asked Melanie.

Grandma was silent for a moment and then she glanced at Melanie.  “They said she was still an elementary school student.  Did I hear that right, Melanie?” she asked.

Melanie nodded and she smiled.  “Yes.  She’s probably my age.”  And she really was.

Grandma looked at the radio again and listened for several more seconds.  “I am not a fan of modern pop music.  But I have to admit that she is a very, very good singer.”

Melanie nearly gasped.  “You really think so?”

Grandma glanced at Melanie and she nodded, but she had no expression on her face.  “Yes.  She has a very good singing talent.  She might become great someday.”

Melanie was so excited that she wanted to tell Grandma that SHE was Starry~en~Luv.  She wanted to tell her everything!  She wanted to tell her that SHE was the one who was singing that song.  She wanted to tell her that she was fulfilling her dream of becoming a singer!

“Grandma!” she said, but then she stopped herself.

Grandma looked at Melanie and was puzzled.  “What is it, Melanie?”

Melanie hesitated and then she smiled.  It’s still not the right time to tell Grandma or anyone else what was going on.  The concert would be the right time to show the world around her who Starry~en~Luv really is.  That would be the right time.  This was not the right time.

      “It’s nothing.”

But Melanie smiled anyway.  She was extremely happy.  She was extremely happy that Grandma thought that she was a good singer!

Another week and a half passed by.  Melanie was putting on her black dress shoes at the front door of the house.  She was pretty in her school uniform.  School had started once again.  She picked up her school bag but it was a different school bag.  She did not want to carry a backpack anymore.  This time, she carried a dark blue suitcase that was bought from the school itself, because the school was selling its own school supplies to students who could afford them.  It was a Haven Millers Academy suitcase.

“Bye, Grandma.  I’m going to school now,” said Melanie.  She opened the door and left the house, making sure that the door was locked.  She skipped down to the sidewalk and began to walk quickly to school.

Today was the first day of school and it was the first day of Grade 5 for Melanie and her friends.

Melanie arrived at the front of the school at the right time.  She knew that Hazel’s mother would be dropping off Hazel and Lawrence at that part of the school at this time of the morning.  Melanie saw the car start to drive away and Hazel waved as the car went farther away.  Melanie began to run towards them.

      “Hazel!” Melanie called out.

Hazel turned and saw Melanie coming towards them.  “Hi, Melanie!” she called out also.

Melanie stopped and the two of them hugged each other for a long time.

“I just made it on time.  I was hoping I’d see you and Lawrence in the morning before school.  That’s why I came early.”

“Hey, that’s good.  Today’s the first day of Grade 5 at our school.  We probably got a little smarter but probably not that much taller,” said Hazel.

Melanie giggled.  Then she saw someone walking towards the school from the distance.  “Oh, that’s Justin over there.”

Hazel turned and saw Justin.  And then both she and Melanie became puzzled.  “Who’s that with him?” said Hazel.

There was a tiny little girl wearing their school’s uniform.  She was holding Justin’s hand and skipping happily as she walked with him.  They were walking towards them.  Melanie and Hazel and smiled and waved at him.  Justin saw them immediately and he waved back, but of course, as usual, he didn’t have any expression on his face.  It’s the same old Justin.

Justin joined Melanie and Hazel.  “Hello.  Good to see you two again,” he said coolly.  “Good to see you, Lawrence.”

Lawrence did not say anything.  He was preoccupied by everything else that was happening around him.  But Justin did not mind that at all.

Melanie smiled.  “Good to see you, too.”

“We only saw each other a few days ago.  You sound like we haven’t seen each other in months.  Did you miss us that badly, Justin?” said Hazel, looking rather mischievous and staring at Justin as if she was suspicious of him.

“No, I didn’t miss you.  I only saw you a few days ago.”

Hazel’s plan to tease Justin backfired.  “That’s so mean!”

Melanie started to giggle.  Justin actually had a small smile on his face and when Hazel noticed that, she started to giggle, too.  Melanie and Hazel looked down at the little girl who was beside Justin.  The little girl was smiling happily at them.

“Who’s this cute little girl?” asked Hazel, who smiled.  Then she realized something.  “Hey, wait a second.  I’ve seen you before.”

When the front door of Justin’s house opened, a little girl appeared and hugged Justin.  Melanie and Hazel were surprised.  Justin patted the little girl’s head.

“I wonder who that is,” said Melanie.

“Maybe that’s his little sister,” said Hazel, with amazement.  “Wow.  That’s amazing.”

Christina looked at both of the girls with a puzzled look on her face but she almost laughed, too.  “Why would that be amazing?”

“He’s so calm and unemotional most of the time.  It’s kind of surprising when a younger sister hugs him.  It makes him look…almost sensitive,” said Hazel.

“But that would be so cool, I think,” said Melanie.

Justin put a hand on the tiny little girl’s shoulder.  He smiled down at her a little and she smiled up at him as well.

“This is my little sister,” said Justin.  “And her name is Helen.  Today is her first ever day of school.  It’s her first day of Junior Kindergarten.  Helen, these are my friends.  These are Melanie, Hazel, and Lawrence.”

Helen waved her little hand at them.  “Hi!  It’s very nice to meet you, everyone!” she said.  Her voice was tiny and cute.

“Nice to meet you,” Melanie said with a bright smile.

Hazel went totally crazy.  Melanie was very surprised and was almost thrown back.  Hazel was completely overwhelmed by Helen’s extreme cuteness!  “It’s nice to meet you!  You’re so cute!” she cried out.  “I want to hug you everyday!”

      Helen looked puzzled.  “Huh?”

      “Cool it, Hazel,” said Justin.

Hazel stopped herself and calmed down.  “Sorry.  I just had to get that out of my system,” she said and she started to laugh uncomfortably as if she was embarrassed.  Melanie put a hand on her forehead and shook her head.

“I have to bring her to Kindergarten.  I’m sorry I won’t see you until classes start.  I’ll look for you two when I’m done then we’ll see each other,” Justin said to Melanie and Hazel.

“Oh, sure, no problem,” said Melanie.

“We’ll see you later.  I have to bring Lawrence to his special Grade 2 class anyway.  Melanie, come with me, okay?” Hazel asked.

      Melanie nodded and smiled.  “Sure!”

“Great.  See you guys later,” said Justin.  He started to walk towards the school’s front entrance with his little sister.  They both disappeared through the front doors.

      “Wow, that’s amazing,” said Hazel.

Melanie was puzzled by that.  “You’re amazed again?”

“Justin is so calm and cool and collected most of the time.  No one would think that he would have a sensitive side to him.  His little sister was holding his hand like she really loves her big brother.  And Justin was really sweet with her, too.  I’m just…really surprised.”

“Oh, okay.”  Melanie giggled at that.  “I know what you mean.  Let’s go inside now.  Let’s bring your brother to his class and then let’s find our classroom.”

      Hazel nodded.  “Okay.  Let’s go.”

In their new classroom, Melanie and Hazel were sitting on desks that were next to each other.  Justin came and sat down on the seat that was reserved for him by Hazel.  The three of them sat next to each other.  Many of the students in this Grade 5 class were the same as the students from last year’s Grade 4 class.  There were some new faces.  But most of the students were familiar.

And that included the evil Kelsey Rayne who was sitting near the front of the class with her friend Natasha.

“She’s still in the same class as us,” Hazel whispered grudgingly.

“Don’t even think about her,” said Justin.

“I’d really like not to think about her.  Right now…it’s really hard not to.”

Melanie looked a little concerned about that.  “Oh, Hazel, I know you don’t like her but please don’t do or say anything.”

“And you shouldn’t like her either, Melanie,” Hazel said in a way that was annoyed.  “She’s annoying and she’s evil.  I think she probably came from hell or something.”

“It’s not that I don’t like her or dislike her or anything,” said Melanie.

Hazel became puzzled.  “What do you mean by that?”

“I don’t really know what to think about her.  I don’t know anything about Kelsey.”

Justin nodded to that.  “That’s true.  Even though she really, really hates Melanie and has done some really awful things to her, we shouldn’t really be mean to her.”

Hazel looked totally surprised.  “Oh, my goodness, you think that, too?”

“Let’s just ignore her,” said Melanie.  “We don’t have to pay attention to her anyway.”

Hazel sighed and she nodded.  “You’re right.  But if she does anything or says anything really mean to you, I’m going to get so mad!”  She made a fist in front of her and it was shaking.  She looked like she was ready to hit someone.

Melanie and Justin looked at each other.  Justin shrugged.  Melanie smiled uncomfortably.

All the students were talking to each other.  The new teacher had not arrived yet.  Melanie, Hazel, and Justin began to listen to what all the kids around them were saying to each other, because they noticed that there were some rather interesting conversations.

Anita Chow and Karen Smith, who were Hazel’s former friends, were talking.

“Hey, did you hear that new song on the radio called ‘Dream’?” asked Anita.

“Yeah, it was really cool.  I wanted to listen to it over and over again,” said Karen.

“I know!”  The two of them were giggling excitedly.  “I heard that it’s sung by an elementary school girl.  Do you think she’s our age?”

“Who knows?  I hope she is.  I really love her voice.  She’s an awesome singer.”

      “I wonder what she’s like.”

      “Yeah, I wonder, too!”

There was another interesting conversation between Jim Castro, Jimson Reeve, and Martha Truong.  Melanie, Hazel, and Justin listened in as well.

“Hey, I wonder who this girl really is.  What’s her stage name again?” said Jimson.

“On the radio, they called her Starry~en~Luv.  She’s a really good singer!” said Martha.

“I know.  They said her song’s been number one for almost 3 weeks straight now,” said Jim.

“That’s so cool.  But no one’s ever seen her, huh?” said Jimson.

“That’s because she’s a new singer.  Maybe when she has a concert, everyone will find out what she looks like.  I’ll bet she looks really cute,” said Jim.

“Yeah, I’ll bet she’s cute, but probably too cute for you, Jim,” Martha said with a laugh.

“Oh, come on!  She’s like a mystery singer with a beautiful voice and her song is number one!  I have to have some kind of admiration, right?” said Jim.

Jimson began to laugh as well.  “I guess you’re right.”  Martha laughed also.

Hazel and Justin both looked at Melanie.  Hazel looked excited and Justin had a small smile on his face.  “Hey, you’re getting famous,” Hazel whispered.

Melanie smiled and blushed at the same time.  “They don’t know it’s me yet.  But soon, they’ll find out who Starry~en~Luv really is.”

It was lunch period at the school.  Melanie, Hazel, and Justin were all in the school cafeteria and they were just finishing their lunch.

Hazel thought of something.  “Hey, Melanie,” she said.

“Yes?  What is it?” asked Melanie.

“Can you sing a part of ‘Dream’ for me?  I really like that song.”

Justin was puzzled and so was Melanie.

“What?  You mean, right now?” Melanie asked.  She was blushing and looked a little shy.

“Yes, right here!  I want to hear it.  I listened to it so much while I was at home.  I want to hear it straight from you, not through a radio.”

Melanie hesitated for a while, but then she smiled and she agreed to it.  “Okay.  I’ll sing you the second verse and chorus,” she said.

Dreaming a dream, make a wish upon a star

Look up at the night and watch for a shooting star

It’s a long and difficult road to get to where you’re going

No matter what happens, we should always keep trying

Dreaming a dream

Dreaming a dream, make your dream come true

Don’t be discouraged and always be true to you

Leave behind all the troubles that made you cry

The dream would only be a waste if we did never try

Dreaming a dream

Just dream!

Several students, some of them from their Grade 5 class, who were nearby heard Melanie’s singing.  They stopped what they were doing and they watched her and they listened to her singing.  The song sounded familiar to a lot of them.  When some of them realized that Melanie was singing the popular song ‘Dream’ from the radio, people were excited and amazed.

Wake up from your comfortable and peaceful sleep

Remember the dream you had while you slept deep

Let the warm golden sunshine through your window

The first thing to do is smile while you hug your pillow

And today, the most important thing that you should do

Will be to come closer to making your dream come true

Dreaming a dream, make a wish upon a star

Just dream!

Melanie was done.  Some students were standing near them and when Melanie realized that, she looked up and she blushed.  After a bit of admiration, the students began to go back to what they were doing before.  Some of them smiled at Melanie and Melanie saw that and she smiled back.

“Wow, Melanie, that was really good,” said Martha, one of her classmates.

“Yeah, you sing pretty well.  That’s the new song on the radio, right?” asked one of the boys who was in a different grade.  Melanie remembered that boy’s face as one of those two students who were with that other boy who had spilled food all over Melanie’s uniform one day last school year.  His name was Erin Chlumsky.

“That’s the song called ‘Dream’.  That’s the new song on the radio.  I heard it’s really famous,” said another one of the boys, whose name was Adrien Lennox.  He was the other student who was with that boy who had spilled food all over Melanie’s uniform last school year.

“Hey, you know what, your singing was pretty good,” said one of the girls.  She was in Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s Grade 5 class and her name was Joanne Leighton.

Hazel smiled at Melanie.  “Looks like you’re getting some fans, Melanie,” she said and started to giggle.  Melanie just blushed.

“Um, yeah,” Melanie said softly and she smiled.  She felt shy and happy at the same time.

“You planned this, didn’t you?” Justin asked Hazel.

Hazel looked surprised and shook her head.  “No, I didn’t.  I really wanted to hear the song.  It’s only natural for people to notice her singing and start liking how she sings.”

Another girl who was in their Grade 5 class was there.  Her name was Susan Lockhart.  “You know what?  While she was singing, I noticed her voice sounds so much like Starry~en~Luv on the radio.  Their voices are almost exactly the same,” she said.

Melanie and Hazel gasped.  Justin was surprised, too, but he did not show it.  Has Melanie been found out already?

“I know,” said Martha, who laughed.  “I just noticed that now, too.”  She turned to Melanie.  “Hey, Melanie, if you could sing like Starry~en~Luv, maybe you should become a singer yourself.  You do sing pretty well.”

That was close!  Melanie and Hazel sighed with relief.  Melanie began to giggle in a shy and uncomfortable way.  “Oh, thank you so much.  Maybe I will,” said Melanie.

“What are you talking about?!” a girl shouted.

“That voice!” said Hazel, who suddenly looked annoyed.  “It’s the witch!”

Everyone turned towards Kelsey Rayne, who was standing close by.  She looked like she was very proud and smiled in a very boastful way.

“You guys are talking about that new song on the radio by some new girl named Starry~en~Luv?  Starry my foot!  That’s got to be one of the worst songs that I’ve ever heard anyone sing.”

“What are you talking about?  That song is cool!” said Susan.

Another girl stood beside Kelsey but she was in a different grade.  “She’s right.  I don’t really like it.  I think it sucks,” that girl said.  Kelsey nodded to that.

A boy also stood near Kelsey.  “I don’t like it either.  Her voice sounds so childish.  I think it’s better if a singer has a more mature voice.”

“Oh, you guys don’t know anything about music then!” said one of the girls who liked Starry~en~Luv’s song on the radio.  She was not in Melanie’s class so she did not know who she was.

“It’s true that this Starry~en~Luv girl has a nice singing voice.  But there are a lot of singers who could sing better than that,” said Natasha, who was standing beside Kelsey.  “I might listen to her for a little while, but that’s it.  I wouldn’t listen any more than that.”

“Her song is number one right now!  That says a lot!” said the boy named Erin.

“So what if she’s just a kid?  She can sing just as well as all those older pop singers!” said Joanne.

“I don’t think you guys know what you’re talking about.  Just because she has a cute voice that everyone likes doesn’t make her a good singer,” said Kelsey.  “Just because her song is number one on the pop charts doesn’t make her a good singer, either.  That’s nothing!”

“Why is that nothing?” said Martha.

“Because you have to express your feelings when you sing, you fool!  You have to touch people’s hearts!  And when you sing, you have to show in your singing that you love to sing!  You have to love singing to be able to sing and reach people’s hearts!” shouted Kelsey.

Melanie was startled.  There was something rather bizarre about what Kelsey had just said.  She wondered if it meant anything.

“This song doesn’t do anything,” said Kelsey.

“Maybe it’s because you don’t have a heart,” said one of the girls who liked the song.

The argument continued between the students who liked Starry~en~Luv’s song and the students who didn’t like it.  Melanie, Hazel, and Justin did not say anything.  They could not say anything at all.  They did not want to either.

“Let’s get out of here before things really heat up between these people,” said Justin.

“I agree,” said Hazel.  “Let’s go, Melanie.”

      “Okay,” said Melanie.

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin snuck out of that part of the cafeteria.  As they walked towards the exit of the cafeteria, a couple of teachers were approaching the arguing crowd of students.  The three of them left the cafeteria and they walked down the hallway a fair bit before they stopped.

“Gosh.  What a weird situation that was,” said Hazel.

“Let them do their arguing.  We have better things to do than to listen to them arguing.  That would just waste our time,” said Justin.

      “Yeah, you’re right.”

Melanie looked down as she leaned against the wall.  Hazel and Justin saw that she looked like she had a disappointed look on her face.  She seemed almost sad, as if she had failed at something.

“They didn’t like the song.  I mean, those other kids,” Melanie said softly.

Hazel sighed and shook her head.  “Melanie, don’t worry about it.  Who cares?  Who cares about what they think?  There are a lot of people who like your song.  Why else would your song be number one for the past 3 weeks?  People want to listen to it.  People want to hear it.  They’re calling radio stations demanding that they play it.”

      “What about those other kids?”

      “Them?”  Hazel was puzzled.

Melanie doubted herself.  “I want to sing because I want to express my feelings and touch people’s hearts.  I’m…happy that I did that for some people.  But I couldn’t do that for other people.  Was there something wrong with the song?  Did I mess up somewhere?”

“I don’t think you messed up anywhere,” said Justin.  “I think it was perfect.  Don’t listen to what those other kids are saying.  They probably don’t even listen to music so they don’t understand.  They don’t know anything.”

Melanie looked up and she sighed.  Still, she felt like she had done something wrong.  She felt like she had sung her debut song perfectly.  A lot of people have heard that song already.  Many people like that song.  But there were some who didn’t like it.  She felt like she messed up, but she did not know how she messed up.

“What?  That sure is weird,” said Christina, who was sitting down on her couch watching television.  She was talking on her cell phone with Melanie.  “A little bit funny, too.  People can sometimes get really passionate about music, you know.”

“That’s not funny,” said Melanie, who was sitting beside her window, looking at the dark scenery outside.  It was late at night.

“Sorry.  You’re right, it’s not funny.”  Christina sighed and she thought for a moment.

Melanie sounded a bit disappointed and she sighed as well.  “They were arguing.  One side liked my song and the other side didn’t like my song.  I guess I was able to touch some people’s hearts by expressing my feelings through songs, but there were some people that I couldn’t do that for.  I tried but I still failed,” she said softly.

      “I see…” Christina said softly.

“Isn’t that what a singer is supposed to do?  A singer is supposed to express their feelings and touch people’s hearts.  That’s what I did.  But it still didn’t work for everyone?  What did I do wrong?  Was there something that I missed or forgot to do?”

Christina thought about something and she smiled.  “Hey, Melanie, I’m going to tell you something that might sound unbelievable but it’s true.  Please believe me when I say it, because it’s so true.  Even Mr. King would tell you this.”

      ”What is it?” Melanie asked.

“There is no such thing as a singer who can touch every single heart in the entire world.”

      Melanie was surprised.  “Huh?”

“Believe me, Melanie.  It’s very true.  Every single famous singer and composer and song writer that you can think of, not one of them has every completely touched absolutely everyone’s hearts.  It’s just not possible.  But do you know why they keep doing what they’re doing?”

“Why?  Why do they keep doing what they’re doing even though they can’t reach everyone?”

Christina smiled.  “It’s because they love music.  Music is their life.  They do their best day in and day out to express their feelings through their music.  They’re satisfied knowing that they’ve reached people. They don’t have to reach every person.  It’s more than enough to reach some.  Do you think everyone likes those pop singers that you see on TV and listen to on the radio?”

Melanie thought about that for a moment.  “No.  Not everyone likes certain singers.”

“That’s right.  But does it matter to them?  They’re not singing so that they can do the impossible.  They’re singing because they like to sing and they like to express their feelings through singing and they like to reach people’s hearts and souls.  Trying to get everyone to like their music is impossible.  Everyone has different tastes in music.  Some people don’t even like music.  Don’t do the impossible, Melanie.  Don’t worry about the impossible.  Just do what you love to do.”

Melanie thought about that for a long time and she realized that it made perfect sense.  She began to smile slightly.

“You’re right.  I’ll just do what I love to do.  I’m going to sing because I like singing and I like expressing my feelings in a way that would touch people’s hearts.”

“Good, Melanie,” said Christina, who smiled, because she was glad that she was able to think of some pretty good advice that made perfect sense.  “All you have to do is do your best in doing what you like to do the most.”

“You’re right.  Thank you so much, Christina.  By the way, can I ask you something?”

      “What is it?” asked Christina.

“Are you sure you’ve never been someone else’s manager before?  You’re pretty good at giving really good advice,” said Melanie.

Christina giggled.  “No, you’re my first job, Melanie.  I’m serious.”

Melanie smiled.  “It’s just that you’re a very good manager.  I’m glad you’re with me.”

“Thanks,” said Christina, who blushed slightly.  “I’m just doing my best in doing what I love to do, too.”  She looked up at the clock and she saw that it was getting really late.  “Anyways, you better get to sleep.  I have to go to sleep, too.  It’s getting really late.  I have work tomorrow.  You have school tomorrow.  And we have a meeting at Regal Records in the afternoon so make sure Hazel and Justin have a great excuse to cover for you.”

Melanie laughed a little.   “Oh, right.  Good night, Christina.”

      “Good night, Melanie.”

The two of them ended their cell phone conversation.  Melanie crawled onto her bed and she pulled the blankets over her.  She lied down on her side and she thought more about what Christina had said to her.  She smiled and she sighed.

“I’ll keep doing my best…” she whispered as she closed her eyes and went to sleep.

Melanie, Hazel, and Justin’s narration:

Melanie: “Hello, everyone!”

Hazel: “It’s back to school time!  We’re all in Grade 5 now.  And you know what?  Lots of people are talking about your new song, Starry~en~Luv.  You’re becoming more and more famous.  Your singer alter ego is getting really popular.  But you’re starting to get popular in the neighborhood, too.”

Justin: “What?  I hope you mean that in a good way.”

Melanie: “I know some people here don’t like me…”

Hazel: “No, that’s not what I meant.  I think people are starting to see you as a sweet and kind girl.  They’re wrong for judging you the wrong way just because your father’s being accused of things that nobody even knows are true.”

Melanie: “You really think so?”

Justin: “But wait a second.”

Melanie and Hazel: “What is it?”

Justin: “You better be careful, Melanie.  I saw this guy with a camera and he was waiting outside Regal Records.  I think he was waiting for you.”

Melanie: “What?!  That sounds so scary!  Don’t scare me like that!”

Hazel: “You’re kidding me!  You don’t mean the paparazzi, do you?”

Justin: “That’s what I mean.  They’re always looking for pictures of celebrities.  Since you’re becoming a celebrity, Melanie, they’re going to start coming after you with their cameras.  It’s going to get really annoying.”

Hazel: “Be careful, Melanie!  You definitely would not want some paparazzi dude taking pictures of you and spreading it all over the magazines, telling the whole world Starry~en~Luv’s true identity before it’s time!”

Melanie: “Oh, no!  I wouldn’t want that!”

Hazel and Justin: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!”

Melanie: “Episode 16: Be careful, people are always talking
