Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 4 and I would like to become a singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m Hazel, her number one fan!”

Melanie: “Oh, Hazel, guess what?”

Hazel: “What?”

Melanie: “I met the producer at Regal Records the other day!”

Hazel: “Really?!  Oh, yeah, you told me about that!  You’re so lucky!  I’m so happy for you!  That’s just so totally awesome!”

Melanie: “Oh, thank you.  Yeah!  So Christina and I went to Regal Records and we had an appointment with him.  So he talked to us for a little while.  His name is Joseph King.”

Hazel: “Joseph King?  I don’t really know producers’ names.  I just know singers’ names.  What kind of stuff does he do?”

Melanie: “A producer helps singers make music for everyone to hear.  And that’s what he’s going to do for me!  He’s going to help me go for my debut as a talented idol pop singer!”

Hazel: “Whoa!  You’re working on that already?  Everyone’s going to hear you sing!

Melanie: “Yup!  But…I didn’t really like his song.  It didn’t express emotion properly.  So I did something that really impressed him.  I wrote my own debut song!  I was really worried that I might not get it done in time, but you were able to help.  Thank you so very much for that.”

Hazel: “Oh, hey, no problem.  That’s what friends are for.”

Melanie: “And I was a little scared at first because I thought he might not like it, but you know, he really did like it!  And he decided that it would be my debut song.”

Hazel: “Wow.  Things really are moving fast for you.  Let’s find out what’s going to happen next.”

Melanie: “Here we are!  Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Melanie was already dressed up in her school uniform and her schoolbag was ready.  It was early in the morning.  She opened the window of her bedroom and she looked outside.  A light rain was falling.  She could see the students who were walking to school carrying umbrellas or wearing raincoats.  She had already eaten her breakfast.  Melanie remembered that she did not have her umbrella here.  It was still in her old house in Toronto.

Melanie sighed and closed the window.  She took her schoolbag and she left her bedroom and she began to walk down the stairs.  She wondered how she was going to get to school without getting wet.  Her lunch bag was on the living room table and she took it.  She began to put on her shoes.  That’s when her Grandma Annabelle came out of the kitchen.

“Melanie,” she called out, her voice rather strict and stern, as usual.

Melanie stood up straight.  “Yes, Grandma?”

“Do you not have an umbrella?” asked Grandma Annabelle.

Melanie suddenly looked shy.  “I’m…sorry, Grandma.  I left it back in my old house.  I mean the house where my Mama and Papa live now.  Not the one in Ottawa,” she answered with a soft voice.

Grandma stared at Melanie for a few seconds and it made her feel a little uncomfortable.  Grandma started to walk towards Melanie.  She went to the coat closet that was beside the front door and she opened it and took out an umbrella.

“Use this umbrella.  If you go out into the rain without this, you might catch a cold,” said Grandma Annabelle, offering the umbrella to Melanie.

Melanie hesitated, and then she took the umbrella gently, holding it like she was scared it might break.  She smiled at her grandmother.  “Thank you so much, Grandma,” she said softly.

Grandma started to walk away after closing the coat closet door.  Just before she disappeared into the kitchen, she had just one more thing to say.

“You have a good day, Melanie,” she said.

Melanie smiled again and she felt a little warm inside.  “You, too, Grandma,” she said softly.  She opened the front door and she went outside into the front porch.  She released the umbrella and she began to walk out to the sidewalk.  She began to walk to school, but she would no longer get wet because of the umbrella that Grandma Annabelle gave her.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 10: Kelsey!  The school rival appears!

Melanie was walking quickly to the school and she was fast approaching the front steps.  She saw someone familiar there, being dropped off by her mother.  It was Hazel and her brother Lawrence.  Melanie hurried to see them.

“Hi, Melanie!” Hazel called out.  Lawrence noticed her and waved at her, but he quickly found something else to put his attention on.

“Melanie.  Good to see you again,” said her mother Isabelle, and she smiled.

“Mrs. Callaway, good morning,” Melanie said to her with a smile and a little curtsey.

“Did you become famous yet?’ asked Isabelle.

      Melanie was puzzled.  “I’m sorry?”

Because of that, both mother and daughter started to laugh and the way they laugh seemed almost exactly the same.  Melanie was really puzzled by these two sometimes, for they seemed to act almost exactly the same and say exactly the same things.  If they were the same age, they could probably be twin siblings.

“Famous?  I’m not sure what you mean by that,” said Melanie, with a blush on her face.

Isabelle smiled.  “Well, you did say that you like singing.  And when I heard you sing when you were recording that tape at our house, I was really shocked.  You’re a really good singer!  Maybe one day, when you grow up, you can become a professional idol pop singer or something.  That would be really neat,” she said with delight.

Melanie and Hazel looked at each other and they started to laugh a little.

Isabelle was confused by that.  “Hey, what happened?”

“Nothing,” said both Melanie and Hazel.

When they were finished laughing, Isabelle seemed calm once again, just like Hazel.  “Oh, well.  I don’t know what’s going on, but anyways, I better go.  I hope you both have a good day at school!” she said to both Hazel and Melanie.

“See you later, Mom,” said Hazel with a smile.

“Have a good day, Mrs. Callaway,” said Melanie.

Isabelle smiled at both of them one more time as she entered the car and began to drive away.  Hazel and Lawrence did not have an umbrella and so the two of them stayed under Melanie’s umbrella.  It was getting a little crowded, too.

“Hazel, you need to buy an umbrella,” Melanie told her.

Hazel began to laugh in a strange way that seemed suspicious.  “Oh, no, I don’t need to buy one.  As long as a cute girl has an umbrella and lets me go under it, then I’m okay,” she said.

“What!” Melanie exclaimed, in a very startled way.

Hazel laughed again, this time in a normal way.  “It’s so easy to make you feel weird, Melanie.”

Melanie sighed and shook her head.  “Let’s just go to the back of the school.”

The three of them began to walk towards the back of the school, all of them under one umbrella.

It was class time.  Katrina Langley, their Grade 4 teacher, was writing a list of country names on the blackboard.  When she was finished, she addressed the class and continued with what she was doing before, and that was explaining the project that the class was to do for the next few days.

“Okay.  As I was saying, this project is about finding information about a country.  This is going to be done in pairs.  You’re going to choose a country, but you don’t get to choose what country it is.  Sorry about that,” said Miss Langley with a slightly amused smile.

The class groaned a little.  Melanie just looked on and she was intent on listening to everything that was being explained.

“I have a little ballot box here and one person from each group of two people is going to reach into the box and pull out a piece of paper.  The paper will be folded.”  Miss Langley reached into the ballot box that was on her desk.  “For example, this one here is China.  So, you and your partner will go to the library and look for information about China.  I want you to find out lots of things, like the language that they speak, how many people live there, what the major cities are, how big it is, what the climate is like, what religions they practice, and a bunch of other stuff.  I have a list of things that I want you to find out and I’m going to pass that list to everyone soon.”

Melanie felt like someone was watching her so she looked to the side a little and saw a girl glaring at her.  She gasped softly and was startled.  It was a girl with long blonde hair and dark blue eyes.  Even though she looked pretty, she looked very angry.  She was staring at Melanie with an ice cold look and it made Melanie feel very uncomfortable.  She looked away.  After about a minute, the girl looked away as well.

A girl who was sitting on the desk to the left of Melanie was frantically looking for some paper through her binder, but she could not find any.  She began to look rather stressed and frustrated at the same time.  And she looked embarrassed as well.  Melanie noticed that immediately and took out a sheet of paper.  She offered it to the girl.

The girl looked up and saw who was offering her a sheet of paper.  She seemed like she was about to thank her, but a frown appeared on her face.

“I don’t want your stinking paper,” said the girl.

Melanie remembered that scene vividly in her mind.  There was someone who talked to that girl as well.  That girl mentioned her name.

“Hey, Kelsey, are you okay?” said another girl.  Melanie looked up at the girl to her left.  Her name was Kelsey Rayne and she had long beautiful blonde hair.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” said Kelsey.  She looked at Melanie, who was looking at her.  “What?  What are you looking at?  You think you’re better than me or something?”

So that was her name.  Kelsey Rayne.  If she wasn’t so mean and smiled more pleasantly, she would be very likeable and her lovely appearance would complement that.  But it doesn’t seem to work for her.  Melanie sighed and continued listening to what the teacher was saying.

Melanie received a sheet of paper from the teacher, like everyone in her class.  It was the list of items that she was supposed to find out about a country that she would choose from the ballot box.  But this project had to be done with a partner.  She looked up and saw Hazel who was smiling at her and giving her thumbs up.  Melanie smiled back.  Both of them hoped that they would be partnered together for this project.

“Alright, now I’m going to choose who is going to partner with whom,” said Miss Langley.  Unfortunately, it was not up to anyone’s choice who to be paired up with, and some students didn’t like that.  Melanie didn’t really mind, but she hoped she would be paired up with Hazel, even though it was unlikely.

“Anita, you’re going to pair up with Martha,” said the teacher.

“Yes, ma’am,” said both Anita and Martha.

Miss Langley had a list in front of her and it contained the names of her students paired up with other students in the class.  She had already planned it out.  “Karen, you’re going to pair up with Jim.”

      “Okay,” said Karen and Jim.

“Hazel,” said the teacher.  Hazel looked up and was hoping that she would say Melanie’s name.  Melanie was hoping, too.  “You’re going to pair up with…Justin.”

Melanie and Hazel sighed.  Melanie looked at Hazel, looking a little bit disappointed, but Hazel just smiled and shrugged.

“That’s okay.  Maybe next time, we’ll get lucky,” said Hazel.

“Sure!”  Melanie smiled at that and she nodded.

“By the way, who’s Justin?” Hazel asked.

“He’s right over here,” said Jim, pointing to the boy who sat beside him.  Hazel and Melanie looked and there was Justin sitting down.  He did not have his sunglasses on this time.  Melanie remembered that time when he had his sunglasses on and she thought he was very cool.

Justin Lagazo had no expression on his face.  He looked very confident as he sat up straight in his seat and his arms crossed against his chest.  He looked at Hazel and Melanie.  He did not smile but he did nod his head.  For some odd reason, Hazel and Melanie thought there were sparkles and pastels and roses behind him, but it was just their imagination.  They did not notice it before, but he was probably the prettiest boy in the entire class.  Actually, Melanie had noticed it before, but she had forgotten about it.  It was that time when she was being bullied by a couple of Grade 6 girls.

Miss Langley continued to call out the pairs.  “Jimson, you’re going to pair up with Natasha,” she said.

Natasha looked at Jimson and they both nodded to each other.

      “Melanie.”

Melanie looked up at the teacher.  “Yes, ma’am?” she said softly.  She wondered who in the world she could possibly be paired up with.  She felt a little nervous, because she had not really talked to anyone in her class except Hazel.

“You’re going to be paired up with Kelsey.”

Hazel did a double-take.  She looked puzzled.  Melanie felt a cold wind blow through her body and she was startled.  She looked at Kelsey.  Kelsey had a horrified look on her face, and it quickly became an angry and annoyed look.

“Miss Langley, you’re going to pair me up with…that?” Kelsey said very loudly and very firmly.  It was so stern that everyone in the entire class became quiet.  Everyone was shocked.

The teacher hesitated but she kept herself calm.  “Yes, I am.  Is there a problem, Kelsey Rayne?” asked Miss Langley.

“Yes!  There’s a very big problem!”

“Could you please tell me what it is?” asked the teacher.

Kelsey stood up from her seat quickly and she glared at Melanie for a few seconds, and then looked back at the teacher.  “Miss Langley, I don’t want to be partners with a stupid, ugly, hateful girl like Melanie Thompson.”

Some of the students gasped, and Melanie was one of them.  Hazel was also one of them.  Justin remained calm but his eyes did narrow as he looked at Kelsey.  Miss Langley began to look a little annoyed and she sighed.

“So you don’t like her then?”

“No!  I don’t like her at all.  Who would like someone like her anyway?  I hate this girl.  I hate anything and everything about her.  There’s nothing about her that anyone can like.” Kelsey said more calmly but her voice held a lot of resentment.  She even smirked as she glanced at Melanie again.

“Well, then.  I guess that means that you’re going to have to learn to get along with her.  Kelsey, you’re going to pair up with Melanie,” said Miss Langley.

Kelsey looked very shocked.  “What!  Miss Langley---!”

“That’s all, Kelsey.  Thank you,” said the teacher.

Kelsey groaned with great irritation as she sat back down on her seat.  She stole a glance at Melanie once again, who looked away.  Hazel looked rather confused, but she could tell that Kelsey hated Melanie’s guts, for some reason.  She wondered if it had anything to do with Melanie’s father, who was being accused of being a corrupted political leader.

      “What’s with her?” Hazel whispered.

“She sure has guts,” Jim said very softly.

Justin did not say anything.  After looking at Kelsey for a long time, he looked at Melanie.  This time, there actually was an expression on his face, if you could call it an expression.  He looked rather serious.  He also looked thoughtful.  He was thinking about something.

Melanie did not really want to think about it.  She sighed and began to gather up her notes.  There was no use arguing against her being paired up with Kelsey.  Besides, she was not the kind of person to argue with anyone about anything.

Suddenly, a binder dropped hard on Melanie’s desk.  Melanie was startled and she looked up.  Kelsey was standing over her.

“Just because we’re being paired up doesn’t mean that I want to.  Let’s get that straight, okay?” Kelsey said to her with a very firm voice.

Melanie looked scared, but she had no choice but to nod quickly.  “Oh, um, okay…” she whispered very softly and shyly.

Hazel was worried.  She wondered if Melanie was going to be okay.  She also wondered if she was going to be safe.  Kelsey looked like she would kill Melanie if Melanie did anything that would make her even angrier.  In fact, “kill” might be an understatement.  She might do worse things than “kill” the very shy and gentle Melanie.  She might even literally “destroy” her.

When it was time for the students to choose a country from the ballot box, Kelsey got up from a seat beside Melanie and she proudly walked to the ballot box.  She reached in and she pulled out a folded piece of paper.  When she opened it, “Spain” was written on it.  She quickly walked back to the seat she had taken over and sat down cross-legged.

Melanie hesitated, before she could say anything.  Being this close to Kelsey, who hated her guts, was extremely scary for her.  She felt extremely shy.  “Um…the country...what is it?” she said very softly and very shyly.

Kelsey glared at her.  “You should speak louder.  It’s Spain.  We’re going to research on Spain.  And don’t you dare tell me that it’s a bad choice.  My mother’s sister’s husband’s cousin’s great aunt is from Spain.  You got that?”

Melanie wondered how in the world Kelsey could keep track of her family tree.  She nodded.  “I have no problem with it,” she said.

“Good.  Now, let’s go to the library.  And when I say now, I mean now!”  Kelsey picked up her binder quickly and she stood up and she began to walk away very quickly.

“Um, please wait for me…” said Melanie, as she picked up her own binder and she began to follow Kelsey.  She ran after her first, just to catch up to her.  But as Kelsey was walking to the library, Melanie stayed a few steps behind her, because she was scared that Kelsey might say or do something worse if she dared walk beside her.

In the library, both Kelsey and Melanie were looking at two different encyclopedias.  Both of them were looking up information on the country of Spain and answering the questions that were on the sheet that Miss Langley had given them.  But there was barely any conversation between the two of them.

“I’m not here to be your friend.  You better remember that.  We may be classmates, but it doesn’t mean that I have to get along with you,” said Kelsey, her voice very strict and very stern, almost like an old woman named Grandma Annabelle.

Melanie thought Kelsey seemed even worse than Grandma Annabelle.  At least, Grandma did not say anything more than she needed to.  Kelsey just keeps going.

“I can’t believe I’m being partnered with you.  It’s so stupid.  First, you’re the rich daughter of that stupid criminal father of yours…”

Melanie looked up, feeling her heart starting to break again.

      “And second…”  Kelsey suddenly stopped.

She stared into space for a few seconds with a very angry look and she formed a fist and she sighed loudly.  Melanie saw that and wondered what she was going to say.  But she said something else.  Melanie wondered what she had stopped herself from saying.  It couldn’t have been a put-down, because if it was, she would have continued saying it.

“Humph…I had to be paired up with someone I don’t like.  It’s like this whole world is against me or something.”

Melanie wondered what that was all about.  But she though again about what Kelsey had said about her father and she felt a little bit of dampness on her eyes.  She wiped her eyes quickly with her sleeve and she concentrated on finding information in the encyclopedia she had.

“And don’t you dare start crying.  If you do…God, I hate it when people cry.  It’s so annoying,” Kelsey said very harshly.  “I hate crybabies.”

The two of them continued their research on Spain.

While writing in her notebook, Kelsey’s pencil broke.  “Damn.  Why does this have to happen now?” she said.  She looked into her pencil case frantically and found out very quickly that she had no spare pencils.  “What?  I don’t have any more pencils?  This is just great.  And no pencil sharpener?”  She groaned with frustration.

“Um, do you want one of my pencils?  I could give one to you if you want,” Melanie said very softly, doing her best to be kind to others as usual.  In fact, she was trying a lot harder than she normally would, and it was actually more than enough to stress her out.

Kelsey glared at her with an angry look.  “What, one of your stupid pencils?  I’ll probably break them, too.  I would love to, so don’t lend me any.”

“I have a sharpener.  I could let you borrow it…”

“No, you idiot, I don’t want your stupid pencil sharpener, so stop being so nice.”

      Melanie looked down a little.  “I’m…I’m sorry…”

Kelsey groaned even more loudly, and she was even angrier than just a few seconds.  “You’re so annoying!  Aaaaaahhhhh!”  She looked around and it looked like she did nothing else to write with.  “Great.  I have nothing to write with.  How could my day get any worse?”

Melanie was trying to keep her eyes away from Kelsey.  Looking at her might cause her to deal out some punishment.

“Actually, I had another day that was much, much worse than this!  It was worse than much, much worse!  It was so bad that I would have seriously loved to hurt to someone that day.  On that day…” said Kelsey, but her voice trailed off and she had a deeper frown on her face.  She closed her eyes tightly but she tried to recover from whatever she was feeling by taking a few deep breaths.  Melanie looked up and wondered what happened there for a few seconds.  Kelsey seemed strange, as if her usual behavior wasn’t strange enough already.

Melanie was holding another pencil in her left hand and she was ready to give it away to Kelsey, but she was scared to give it away.  Kelsey saw that and she hesitated.

“Stupid girl…You know what, give me that pencil,” Kelsey ordered.

Melanie offered the pencil and Kelsey snatched it away and started to write in her notebook.  She took it from Melanie’s hand so fast that Melanie thought she might rip her hand out along with the pencil.

“Um…if you want…you can keep it…” Melanie said very softly.

Kelsey groaned loudly and closed her eyes hard and looked like she was about to pull all of her hair out of her head.  “Stop being so….Aaaaaahhhhh!”

Melanie was being polite and kind to her no matter what she did or said to her.  And Kelsey did not like it one bit.

“You’re being too nice,” said Kelsey.  “People who are too nice usually get taken advantage of.  So if you don’t shut up, I’m going to get someone to beat you up.  Oh, wait, I don’t really know anyone who would waste their time on you, so never mind.”

Melanie looked up with a scared face.

“Quit talking to me, okay?  I’m trying to concentrate here,” said Kelsey.

“I’m sorry,” said Melanie, and she quickly put her hand on her mouth.  Apologizing was a mistake, because it meant that she was not being quiet, like Kelsey had ordered her to be.

“Will you please stop acting nice?  Just shut up!”

The librarian heard Kelsey.  “Hush over there.  This is a library,” said the librarian.

Kelsey sighed and shook her head and closed her eyes.  After a few seconds, her angry and irritated face changed to a face that had a small smile in it.  But the smile was not a very nice one.  She looked like she had just come up with an evil idea.

Later in the school day, there was a math test.  Miss Langley started giving the test sheets to every single one of her students.

“Okay.  This is just a short test, so relax, everyone.  It’s not hard and it’s not easy.  Just average, I think.  But as long as you do your best, I’m sure everyone is going to do really well,” said Miss Langley.  When she gave out the last sheet, she returned to the front of the class.  “Everyone, please start.  You have 15 minutes.”

Kelsey grinned like she was about to do something evil.  She looked down on her test paper and she wrote down Melanie’s name instead of her own.  She began to write other things as well.  She looked to the side and saw Melanie answering the questions on the test.  Everyone was writing the test as well.  Kelsey was the only one who wasn’t, but nobody knew that yet.

When 15 minutes passed by, Miss Langley stood up from her seat.  “Is everyone done?  Time’s up!  Can I get someone to take everyone’s test papers and bring them to the front, please?”

Kelsey was quick to raise her hand and she spoke to the teacher sweetly.  “Miss, I’ll do it!” she said, quite cheerfully and innocently.

Miss Langley smiled and nodded.  “Thank you, Kelsey.”

Kelsey stood up from her chair and she began to collect everyone’s test paper.  She took Hazel’s and then she took Justin’s.  She passed Melanie and took her test paper as well.  Melanie gave it to her and tried not to look at her and made herself look as invisibly small as possible.  Kelsey just grinned.  As she walked around, she kept Melanie’s test paper on top.  When she reached the back of the class, while no one was looking at her, she quickly wrote her own name on Melanie’s test paper, and then erased Melanie’s name.  Then she put it in the middle of the pile of test papers.  She brought the test papers to Miss Langley’s desk and placed them there.

      “Thanks, Kelsey,” said the teacher.

“You’re welcome, Miss Langley,” said Kelsey, with a strangely sweet voice.  It made Hazel wonder what was with her.  It made Justin look suspicious.  Melanie did not really pay attention.

Miss Langley was marking the test papers quickly.  Kelsey watched her.  Melanie was just looking at her notes in her notebook and Hazel was playing with her pencil by twirling it in her fingers.  Kelsey could tell that Miss Langley reached the test paper that had Melanie’s name on it when Miss Langley seemed to look a little surprised.  A few minutes later, she reached the last test paper, the one with Kelsey’s name on it, and she was marking that and looked impressed.  Kelsey grinned with satisfaction.

The Grade 4 teacher sighed and sat back in her seat.  “Melanie?” she called out.

Melanie looked up and smiled.  “Yes, Miss Langley?”

Miss Langley looked puzzled.  “Are you going to sit there and pretend that you didn’t do anything wrong?” she said.

Kelsey grinned even more.  Melanie blinked a couple of times and was very puzzled.  “Pardon?” she asked.  Some students looked puzzled, too, especially Hazel.

“First of all, you didn’t even write the test.  Second, you wrote some really nasty words on your test paper that really shocks me.”

“What?!” said Hazel with great surprise.

Melanie’s eyes widened.  “But I didn’t.  I wrote the test.  I put my name on it.”

“Come up here, please, Melanie,” said Miss Langley.

Melanie looked frightened.  She stood up from her seat and walked towards the teacher.  Miss Langley showed the test paper that had her name on it and there were some bad words on the test paper.  Melanie saw it and she gasped and her hands flew up to cover her mouth.

Miss Langley narrowed her eyes with irritation.  “From the way you’re acting right now, you look like you have no idea that you wrote that on the test paper.”

Melanie looked up at her and she shook her head, but she also looked very scared.  “I…I didn’t write that, Miss Langley…I didn’t write that…”

“That’s impossible,” said Hazel, who looked shocked.

A couple of students at the front seats hopped up and rushed to see what was on the test paper and they saw the bad words that were on it.  The two students, both of them boys, looked shocked as well.

“Whoa!  Those are really nasty words you wrote on your test, Melanie!” said one of the boys.

Justin looked up and his eyes narrowed.

“Sit down, please,” said the teacher.   The two students went back to their seats.  She looked at Melanie again.  “I’m very disappointed.  Why would you do something like this?”

Hazel looked very angry suddenly.  She stood up from her seat.  “There’s no way that Melanie would write whatever bad things are written on there!  There’s just no way!” she shouted.

“But her name is on it,” said one of the students who had looked at the test paper.

“Well, that’s wrong!  It had to be a trick!” shouted Hazel.

“Please sit down, Hazel,” said Miss Langley.

“Miss Langley---!”  Hazel stopped herself, for she felt a hand on her shoulder.  She looked behind her and saw Justin standing just behind her.  She was puzzled.  Justin looked a little angry, too, and that was probably the first time that he showed any sign of emotion.

“I will handle this,” said Justin.  His voice was calm and cool.  He casually walked by Kelsey’s desk and took her notebook.

Kelsey tried to grab it back.  “Hey!  What are you doing?” she said, but he was already far away from her.  Everyone watched as Justin walked to the teacher’s desk.  Melanie watched him as well.  Miss Langley was puzzled.

      “Justin?” said Miss Langley.

“Melanie didn’t write that test paper,” said Justin.  “I’ll show you.”  He turned to Melanie.  “Melanie, can you get your notebook?”

Melanie hesitated but then she complied.  She hurried to her desk and she took her notebook and went back to the teacher’s desk.

“Miss Langley, can you give me Melanie and Kelsey’s test papers?” asked Justin.

“Um, yeah, sure,” said Miss Langley.  She gave the two test papers to Justin.

Justin looked at the two test papers and a small smile appeared on his face.  Kelsey suddenly realized what he was doing and she became alarmed.  She looked very worried as she stood up from her seat.

“Um, Miss Langley…” she started, but she could not continue.

Justin put the two notebooks down on the teacher’s desk.  He put the test papers beside them.  “Miss Langley.  Melanie’s notebook is on the left and Kelsey’s notebook is on the right.  The test paper with Melanie’s name on it is beside Kelsey’s notebook and the test paper with Kelsey’s name on it is beside Melanie’s notebook.  If you look at the handwriting, it’s obvious which of them wrote which test paper.  Their handwritings are very different from each other.”

Miss Langley looked surprised.  She looked at the notebooks and the test papers.  After looking, she sighed and stood up from her seat.  She faced Melanie and put a hand on her shoulder.

“Melanie, please forgive me.  I’m sorry,” said the teacher.

“Oh, um…that’s okay, Miss Langley,” said Melanie, with a very soft voice.

Miss Langley took the two test papers from her desk and shot a very serious look at Kelsey.  “Kelsey.  Could you please come with me to the principal’s office?” she asked.  Her voice seemed rather monotone but it was obviously angry.

Everyone in the class was shocked.  Kelsey looked the most shocked of all.  “Miss…Miss Langley…I…um…”

      “Now, Kelsey.”

Kelsey hesitated, and then she started walking slowly towards Miss Langley, who started walking out of the classroom.  And this time, Kelsey actually looked quite frightened.  Melanie saw that frightened look on Kelsey’s face and it made her feel sorry for her.  They were headed for the main office.

In the Grade 4 classroom, Justin closed his eyes and sighed.  He gave one of the notebooks back to Melanie, who accepted it.

“Justin, thank you so much,” Melanie said softly.

Justin looked up at her and he nodded.  He was calm once again.  “It was not a problem,” he said coolly.  He took the other notebook and placed it on Kelsey’s desk.  Hazel and Melanie stood in front of him and they looked puzzled.

“How did you know?” Hazel asked.

Justin began to explain how he foiled Kelsey’s evil plan.  “Kelsey didn’t know it, but I saw what she was doing at the corner of my eye.  When she was taking the test papers from everyone, she went to the back of the class where she thought no one would see her and she wrote something on one of the test papers.  I was wondering what she was doing, but I figured it out when Miss Langley said there were bad words on Melanie’s test paper, which was actually Kelsey’s.  And we know Kelsey hates Melanie.  And why was Kelsey so happy about picking up everyone’s test papers at the end of the test?  You just have to put two and two together to figure it out.”

Jim stood up beside Justin.  “Man, you sure are smart for figuring that out.  That girl Kelsey thinks she’s smart but she’s not that smart.”

“Actually, she’s very smart.  She’s just not very smart at doing very bad things,” said Justin as he sat down on his seat.

Melanie, Hazel, Jim, and a couple of other students, named Martha and Jimson, were standing around Justin’s desk.

“Wow, you were really cool up there, you know,” said Jimson.  “I’d never be able to figure that out.  I’d just think that Melanie did something bad and that’s it.”

“For someone who’s really quiet and doesn’t say very much, you’re really very smart, Justin,” said Martha.

Justin smiled slightly, but it was hard to notice.  “Thanks,” he said softly.

“Thanks for helping Melanie back there.  I couldn’t believe that she would do something like that.  I know her better than anyone else in this school and I know she would never do something like that.  That’s just not like her,” said Hazel.

“Of course not,” said Justin.  He looked up at Melanie.

“Thank you so much for helping me.  I really appreciate it,” said Melanie.  She smiled as well.

“No problem,” said Justin.  He looked at Melanie for a long time.  “You know, some people think you’re not very nice.”

Hazel and Melanie were puzzled.  Melanie looked down and she nodded.  “Yeah, I know.”

“But I think they’re wrong.  They just haven’t sat down with you and got to know you.  They don’t really know anything about you.  What they know about you is that you’re the daughter of the Premiere of Ontario and that he has a bad reputation.  That’s it.  But they don’t know the real you.”

Melanie and Hazel were still puzzled.  But what he was saying did make sense.

“I’ve seen you, Melanie.  No matter how badly people treat you, you’re always nice to them.  You’re always nice to everyone, actually.  And that’s a good thing.  Because of that…I think you’re a good person.”

Hazel smiled and so did Melanie, who also blushed.  “Thank you…” said Melanie.

“Oh, yeah, there’s one more thing.”

      “What is it?” asked Hazel.

Justin sat back in his seat and looked up at Melanie.  “Melanie, I’ll be your friend.”

Melanie was puzzled by the sudden thing that Justin said to her.  Hazel was puzzled, too, but she soon smiled and she looked over at Melanie.  Melanie blushed slightly and she smiled and sighed.  When she looked over at Hazel, she nodded to her.

“That’s…very kind of you.  Thank you.  I think…I think that would be really nice,” Melanie said.

“Thanks for accepting.  I’ll do my best,” said Justin, almost as if he was going on some kind of military mission.  He was very calm about it.  He looked up at her again.  “You know my first name.  But my whole name is Justin Lagazo.”

Melanie smiled and offered to shake his hand.  “Melanie Thompson,” she said.

The two of them shook hands and Hazel seemed happy that the two of them just became friends.

The next day, Justin was sitting at a table in the library looking through an encyclopedia.  He did not say anything at all.  He just did his research about the country of Japan without saying anything and with full concentration.  However, it was for that reason his new partner was becoming more and more irritated by the minute.

“Don’t you ever say anything?” said Kelsey, who was also looking through an encyclopedia about the same country, since her new partner was Justin instead of Melanie.

Justin looked up with no expression on his face.  “I’ll say something if I need to say something.  Right now…I don’t need to,” he said in a very calm manner.  It was so calm that it made Kelsey slightly uncomfortable, too.  Justin went back to his research.

Another few minutes passed by.  Kelsey rolled her eyes and she sighed.

“You’re annoying,” she said.  She looked up to see how Justin would react.  But there was no reaction at all.  He just kept on researching.  That made Kelsey more annoyed.  She took out a page from her notebook and she crumpled it into a tight ball.  Then she threw it at Justin.

But Justin caught the crumpled piece of paper without looking!  Kelsey was very surprised.  Justin looked up at Kelsey and put the paper ball on the table.

“There’s no littering allowed in the library,” said Justin.  Then he went back to research.

Kelsey sighed and groaned loudly with frustration.

When it was lunch period, Melanie and Hazel were at the swings in the school playground.  Their new friend Justin was also with them.  Melanie and Hazel were the ones sitting on the swings while Justin was leaning on one of the metal poles that supported the swing set.

“Are you friends with Jim, too?  Maybe you should have invited him here with us,” said Hazel.

“I know,” said Justin.  “He’s a good friend, but he’s not my only friend.  Just because we hang out sometimes together doesn’t really mean that he’s my only friend.  We do talk sometimes.  He can hang out with me anytime he wants.  He is a good person, too.”

“And you can hang out with us as much as you want, Justin,” said Melanie.

Justin smiled and he nodded.  “Thanks.”

      “Hey!” a voice shouted.

It startled Melanie and Hazel, but Justin was not startled.  All three of them turned and saw Kelsey coming towards them.  She was not alone, however.  Natasha was with her.  But while Kelsey was walking towards them with an angry look on her face, Natasha stopped and sighed and crossed her arms against her chest.

Hazel glared at Kelsey with annoyance.  “Not you again,” she said.  “What do you want?  Did you come here to bother Melanie again?”

Kelsey stopped as she stood a few feet away.  She looked at all three of them.  Melanie looked a little frightened.  Hazel seemed angry.  Justin had no expression on his face at all.

“You little brat,” Kelsey said, pointing directly at Melanie.  “Nothing that happened to me yesterday changes my mind about you.  I still hate your guts and I hope you go to hell.  Your father is still a criminal.  And you’re still an annoying little crybaby.”

      Then she pointed at Justin.

“And you!  You think you’re so smart, don’t you?  But you’re not that smart, even though you got me into big trouble yesterday.  I hate Melanie and I had the perfect plan to ruin her but you had to get in my way.  I hate you too.”

Then, finally, she pointed at Hazel.

“And you!  You’re stupid for leaving your group of friends and joining up with that stupid Melanie.  I heard about that from them.  You left them and became friends with Melanie.  You’re nothing but a traitor.”

Hazel became even angrier because of how Kelsey was acting in front of them.  “Who do you think you are anyway?  Why are you saying these things?  Is that the reason why you came over here?  Did you come here to insult us?  If that’s true, then you’re just wasting your time!” she shouted.

Kelsey looked at Hazel and she grinned.  “I’m not wasting my time.  If I don’t like someone, I’ll say it.  And I don’t like you.  And I hate you, Melanie!”

Melanie gasped.  She felt scared as Kelsey yelled at her.

“That’s why I did that to you yesterday.  That’s why I made you look bad in front of the teacher, even if it’s just for a few minutes.  I totally hate you!  I wish you would just go to hell!  I don’t care if she found out that I was the one who made you look bad.  I don’t care!  At least, I made you feel bad!”

Hazel shouted again.  “Stop talking to her like that!  Why do you hate her so much anyway?  She never did anything to you!  She never did anything wrong to you!”

Kelsey glared at Hazel and then at Melanie again.  She was speechless for several seconds.  In fact, while she was silent for several seconds, she looked like she was about to explode with anger.  Her hands formed fists at her sides.

“You don’t know, do you?” Hazel shouted.  “Melanie didn’t do anything to you!”

      Kelsey was still silent.

Hazel shook her head at her.   “You’re the one who’s being stupid here.  You pick on her even though she never did anything to you.  But no matter what you do to her or what you say to her, she’s never going to do anything bad to you!  That makes her a good person!  And it makes you look very bad!  And you know what else?”

“What?’ Kelsey said with a very sharp tone of voice.

      “You’re nothing compared to Melanie.”

Kelsey felt something cold blow through her body, almost like a chilling wind.  Melanie saw a strange look on Kelsey’s face for a few seconds, but she looked down and away and Melanie could not see that look anymore.

Hazel continued speaking.  “You’re nothing compared to her!  Look at you!  You’re just a bitter girl who’s angry about everything.  And you have a sick mind to, because you thought of doing something like that to Melanie yesterday.  She would never do that.  Melanie would never do that.  And you know what else?  While you’re just a bitter girl, Melanie’s on her way to becoming a super-famous idol pop singer one day!”

Kelsey looked up at Hazel, and the look on her face was full of rage.  “A famous idol pop singer?!” she shouted.

Hazel smiled with satisfaction.  “That’s right.”

Melanie was looking up at Hazel with surprise.  “Hazel…”  Justin looked at both Melanie and Hazel with a slightly puzzled look on his face.

“Humph!  That’s why you’re nothing compared to her.  You’re just mean.  She’s nice.  And she’s also a singer.  One day, she’s going to be a great professional idol pop singer, and you’re still going to be nothing.  You’ll still be absolutely nothing, Kelsey!”

Justin looked over at Hazel.  “Hazel, is that true?  Melanie’s going to be a pop singer?” he asked.

Hazel smiled at Justin.  “Yeah, that’s what she’s going to be.  And one day, everyone will be listening to her songs on the radio and on CD’s and she’s going to be on TV one day, too.  She might even do really cool music videos.”

      “But, Hazel…” said Melanie.

      “What?” Hazel asked.

Melanie looked a little uncomfortable and she was blushing and felt shy.  “I really wish you hadn’t said anything about it.  It’s not time for that yet.  I don’t want people to know yet.  It’s too early.”

“Huh?”  Hazel looked puzzled.  “Oh, um, well…okay.”

Kelsey was quiet for a very long time, but she looked at Melanie in a very angry way.  Her hands were still fists at her sides.  After several more seconds, she closed her eyes and smiled and began to laugh softly.  She looked up at all three of them.

“I would never believe in something like that.  Melanie becoming a famous idol pop singer?  She’ll be a famous idol pop singer one day?”  Kelsey began to laugh very loudly.  “That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!  That will never happen!  Not in a million years!  There’s no way I’m going to believe that.  A stupid girl like her would never become an idol singer.”

Hazel groaned and shook her fist at her.  “Just you wait!  When she becomes famous, you’ll be on your knees trying to say sorry to her!”

Kelsey laughed again.  “I’m getting out of here.  You’re wasting my time with something really stupid now.  Even if she actually became a singer, I would never listen to any of her songs.  Goodbye,” she said.  She began to walk away.  She walked towards the girl Natasha who was waiting for her.  Kelsey just kept on walking.  Natasha looked at Melanie, Hazel, and Justin for a few seconds and then she went after Kelsey quickly.

“Why’d you have to say all that stuff anyway?” asked Natasha, who was sitting down on a park bench in the school park.  Kelsey was sitting beside her.

“I hate that girl.  Isn’t it obvious?” said Kelsey.

Natasha shrugged.  “Yeah, I guess it is.  So they’re all stupid.  I don’t really care.”

Kelsey closed her eyes and crossed her legs.  She began to laugh again.  “That was too funny.  Melanie working on becoming a famous idol pop singer?  That’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard today.  Actually, that’s probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life.  That’s never going to happen.”  Then she looked up and she had a strange but angry look in her eyes.  She whispered something.  “I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen…”

“What?”  Natasha heard what she said but she had no idea what it meant.  “What do you mean?”

Kelsey looked up at Natasha.  “It’s nothing.”

“That girl really could sing, you know,” Natasha said.

      “Huh?”  Kelsey looked surprised.

“Melanie.  One time, I saw her singing to some kid who’s in Grade 1.  It was Hazel’s little brother.  I don’t know his name, but he was retarded.  These kids in Grade 3 were making fun of him and Melanie stopped them.  And she sang a song for him to make him feel better.  She’s…actually a pretty good singer, you know.  Didn’t you see that?  I thought you did.”

Kelsey remembered that day.  She was watching Melanie singing to Hazel’s little brother because the little boy was being made fun of by a bunch of kids.

      “I remember that…” said Kelsey.

“Good.  She is a good singer, don’t you think?”

Kelsey stared at Natasha for a while.  She held a look of shock on her face.  But there was a part of her that understood why it seemed to make a lot of sense.  She was remembering something else, but she would not say anything about it.  It was not the same thing that she remembered.  It was something else, something very different.  She looked angry.

“I don’t want to be reminded by that!” Kelsey shouted and looked away.

Natasha was puzzled as she glanced at Kelsey.  It was a strange thing to say and she wondered what it meant.  But Kelsey would not say anything about it anymore.

A car pulled up in front of the school and it was Isabelle, Hazel’s mother.

“Hi, Mom!” said Hazel.  “If it’s okay, can I invite Melanie to our house?  And I also want to invite our new friend Justin over, too.  I want us all to study together at our place.  I know he’s a boy, but I think it’s alright.  He’s cool.”

Isabelle smiled at them.  “Oh, that’s no problem, as long as it’s okay with their parents.”

“I called my Grandma and she said it was fine,” said Melanie.

“I called my parents also and they agreed,” said Justin.

“Great!  Well, then, hop on in, everyone,” said Hazel’s mother.

Isabelle drove the car with Hazel on the front passenger seat while Lawrence, Melanie, and Justin were all in the back.  When they arrived at the house, which was only a few minutes away from the school, everyone went into the house and Melanie, Hazel, Justin, and Lawrence went into basement, which had been converted into an entertainment centre and playroom.

The four of them talked and played some games for a little while and soon, they were getting ready for their study time and doing their homework together.  At that point, Isabelle came into the room and offered some glasses of juice for them.

“Thank you, Mrs. Callaway,” said Melanie and Justin.

“By the way, thanks for having us, Miss Callaway,” Justin said to her.

Isabelle smiled sweetly.  “Oh, it’s no problem.  Hazel used to have a bunch of girls over.  I wonder how they’re doing now.”  She turned to Hazel.  “How come they don’t come over anymore?”

Hazel shrugged.  “They don’t like Melanie.  But that’s their problem.”

Isabelle was surprised.  “Oh.  That’s too bad.  Well, if they’re going to be like that with Melanie, then I don’t think they’re very good friends.  Melanie is a very sweet girl.”

Melanie smiled and she blushed.  “Thank you.  That’s very nice…” she said softly.

Hazel turned to Justin.  “Hey, Justin, you never went to that play that we had a little while ago, did you?  Melanie was in it.”

“I heard about it, but I never saw it,” Justin replied.

“Oh, that’s too bad.  You should have been there, because Melanie played a part and she had a singing part, too.  It was really good!  If you saw her then, you would have thought she was an awesome singer.  You would have been shocked.”

“Hazel,” said Melanie, and she started to giggle.  She was still blushing.

“Don’t be so modest, Melanie,” said Hazel, who had a very big smile on her face.  “Come on, why don’t you sing something for Justin here?  Then he’ll know how good a singer you are.  He’s going to be so shocked and speechless!  You’ll totally break down his calm and cool outside.”

Justin became puzzled by what Hazel had just said.  Break down his calm and cool outside?  She must have meant his usual cool attitude.  Most of the time, he did not show much emotion.

Melanie smiled sweetly and she agreed.  “Okay, I’ll sing something for everyone.”

“Great!  We got all the equipment right here!” shouted Isabelle’s mom, who suddenly had a microphone.  She handed the microphone to Melanie and she turned up the karaoke system, which had been relocated to the basement.  Melanie and Justin were both surprised while Hazel and Isabelle were just waiting with smiles on their faces.

Melanie began to laugh.  She took a deep breath and she began to sing a song.

No matter what, we’ll always be in love

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

Why are we still in love with each other?

Why do we still struggle to be together?

My feelings so strong, I don’t know what to do

There’s so much distance between me and you

It feels like there’s no point to love anymore

But my heart won’t let me stop loving you more

So much has happened, so much hurt and pain

I feel I should give up, so we can stop the strain

But if I were to let you go and just walk away

I would regret every living moment of every day

Forever love…

No matter what happens, we’ll always be in love

Fly with me through the sky on the wings of a dove

Together through the hardships, the darkness, the pain

Even if the sun was shining, even if it was pouring rain

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

So many things try to take you away from me

I wish we could just fly away and forever be free

The world frowns at our love for each other

But we mustn’t let that stop us from being together

My love for you is strong, it will never die

We’ll never lose each other as long as we try

Dear my love, the brightness of the glorious morning

Is what we’ll see when we pass through the suffering

Please stay with me and never let go of me

Hold my hand as we go where we can love freely

Forever love…

No matter what happens, we’ll always be in love

Fly with me through the sky on the wings of a dove

Together through the hardships, the darkness, the pain

Even if the sun was shining, even if it was pouring rain

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

No matter what, we’ll always be in love

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

We’ll always have our love, our forever love…

Justin was staring at Melanie.  His eyes were a little wider than they normally would be.  In fact, his jaw dropped open slightly.

“Hey, is that an expression on your face?” said Hazel, looking like she was teasing Justin.

Justin realized that and shook his head.  He was back to his usual calm and cool attitude once again.  He did his best to keep his composure.  He cleared his throat before he spoke.  “Melanie, I think you’re a very good singer.  What Hazel said was right back in school.”

Melanie looked up at Justin.  “You really think so?” she asked with a soft voice.

“Of course, I do.  She said you’re going to be a famous idol pop singer.  I think she’s right.  You’re good enough to be one.”

Melanie’s smile became very bright and she gasped.  “Justin!  Thank you so very much!”

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “Hello, everyone!”

Hazel: “Hey, Melanie!  What are you going to do next at Regal Records?”

Melanie: “I’m going to have my first-ever photography session.”

Hazel: “A photography session?  What’s that?”

Melanie: “That’s when they take pictures of me.  It’s a little bit like modeling, I guess, but it’s for my singing career and for my singing career debut.”

Hazel: “That sounds so cool!  What will the pictures be for?”

Melanie: “They’re going to use it for things like advertisements.  If they’re going to make posters with me on it, they need to take pictures of me, right?  And, of course, if I release CD’s on sale, then my pictures will be on the inserts, too.”

Hazel: “Oh, my, that’s so cool!”

Melanie: “Yup!  But I’m wondering where the photos shoot will be.  Is it going to be in the Regal Records photo studio?  Or maybe out on the streets in the city with all the tall buildings?  Or maybe in the park where there’s pretty flowers?”

Hazel: “I think you can do something like that anywhere, as long as the place is beautiful, right?”

Melanie: “I think so!  I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’m a little nervous.”

Hazel: “Oh, don’t worry about that!  You’ll do just fine!  I know you will!”

Melanie: “Thank you so much, Hazel.”

Melanie and Hazel: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!  Episode 11: My first ever photo session!  Wish me luck!
