Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 4 and I would like to become a singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m her number one fan!  Hazel!”

Melanie: “Hey, guess what?  I just met my new manager!  You know every singer has a manager, right?  I got one now!”

Hazel: “Aaaaaahhhhh!  You’re so awesome, Melanie!  What’s her name?  What’s she like?  What’s she going to do for you?”

Melanie: “Her name is Christina.  She’s really nice and she looks like she’s still young.  I think I’m the first singer that she’s going to be a manager for.  But that’s alright, because this is the first time I’m becoming a singer.  She’s going to help me become a professional idol pop singer.”

Hazel: “Oh, alright.  Well, then, I guess that means that you and Christina can learn from each other.”

Melanie: “Yes!  And we’ll do our best together.  That’s a promise.”

Hazel: “Was that the reason why you weren’t outside in the playground with me during lunch time that day?  She came to our school, didn’t she?”

Melanie: “That’s right!  Actually, it was Mr. Wilkins and Christina.  The three of us had a little interview in the library.  Christina was a little worried at first that my Grandma Annabelle didn’t know that I’m working on a singing career, but I think she understands why I don’t want her to know yet.”

Hazel: “Great, Melanie.  Are you going to let me meet her?  She sounds really cool.”

Melanie: “Sure!  I’d love to introduce you to her when I see her next time.”

Hazel: “Awesome!  Thanks!”

Melanie: “Here we are!  Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Melanie was getting ready for school in her room.  She was putting on her school uniform and she was looking in the mirror when her new cell phone started to ring.  She went to her schoolbag and took her cell phone out.  She made sure that the ring of the cell phone was very soft so that her Grandma Annabelle would not hear it.

      “Hello?” said Melanie.

“Now, Melanie, if you’re answering your own phone, you should sound more professional,” said the girl on the other line.

Melanie was surprised.  “Huh?  Um…is that you, Christina?”

Christina started to laugh a little.  “Not, ‘um, is that you Christina’.  You’re going to be a professional singer, Melanie, so you should sound more like it when you’re answering your own phone.”

“Oh, you mean like ‘Melanie speaking’?” asked Melanie.

Christina smiled as she spoke on her cell phone just outside of the building of Regal Records.  “Yes, yes, that’s right.  That sounds good.  It sounds perfect for you, too.”

Melanie giggled slightly and she smiled.  “Oh, I’m sorry.  I’ll do that then.”

“What are you doing right now?” asked Christina.

“Getting ready for school,” answered Melanie.

“So you remember the appointment that we have later today, right?  Right after school, I’m going to pick you up.  I’m going to pick you up from your school so be sure to be at the front.”

“Yup, I remember.  I’ll be there.  But thank you so much for reminding me.”

“Oh, that’s no problem.  So I’ll see you later then?”

Melanie nodded excitedly.  “Oh, no problem,” she said.

      “Bye for now.”

      “Bye.”

The two of them ended the phone conversation.  Melanie held her cell phone with both hands and held it next to her heart.  She closed her eyes, smiled, and looked very dreamy for a second.

“Today…today’s the day I’m going to meet the producer.  I’m going to Regal Records with my new manager Christina and we’re going to meet the producer.  It’s…just so amazing.  I think…I think I might just become a singer after all…”

Starry Love Dream

Episode 9: Impress the producer, but his songs are scary!

The sunlight reflected off the windows at Melanie’s school.  Melanie was sitting in class while the teacher Miss Langley was teaching class.  She was writing notes on the chalkboard while the students were copying.  Someone passed a small piece of paper on Melanie’s desk and she looked up.

It was one of the girls.  But she did not know her name.  The girl smiled and pointed towards Hazel, who gave a quick wink and smiled.  Melanie smiled as well and she unfolded the small piece of paper.

“Please come over to my house after school today.  Hazel.”

Melanie was a little surprised.  She had to tell Hazel later that she would not be able to come over to her house after school today because of an appointment that she has with Christina Lane.  During recess time, Melanie will tell her about it.  She just hoped that Hazel would not be disappointed in her.

During morning recess time, Melanie and Hazel were near the exit door at the back of the school that led to the school playground.

“Hey, are you coming over later or what?” asked Hazel, who just joined her a few seconds ago.

Melanie began to laugh in an uncomfortable way, as if she had just done something wrong, her hand at the back of her head.

Hazel looked at her suspiciously.  “Something is wrong with the way that laughing sounds,” she said.

“Um, Hazel…I’m so sorry…but there’s something I have to do after school,” said Melanie.

      “What is it?” Hazel asked.

“I have to go somewhere.  My manager is picking me up at the front of the school right after school and we’re going to Regal Records,” answered Melanie.

Hazel’s eyes widened with great surprised and excitement.  “What?  Really?!  What are you going to do?  Are you going to record your first CD?  Tell me!  Tell me!  Tell me!”

Melanie giggled at Hazel’s excitement.  Since Melanie is not really the kind of person that becomes very loud when she’s excited, it was nice that Hazel could express her excitement for her.  “We’re going to meet the producer at Regal Records.”

“You’re going to meet the producer?  What does he do?”

“He’s the one who’s going to work with me.  Just like my manager.  It’s…a little complicated.  The kind of stuff he does.  He does a lot of things.  But I guess the easiest way to say it is that he’s the boss who helps in people’s singing careers.”

Hazel smiled.  “That’s pretty cool.  So that means he’ll help you become a real professional idol pop singer.  Isn’t that right?”

      “You’re right,” said Melanie.

“So what are you guys going to do anyway?”

“It’s just going to be a meeting.  It’ll be the first time I meet him.  Christina told me his name but I forgot his name already.  That’s probably a bad thing, huh?”

      “Who’s Christina again?”

“Oh, she’s my new producer.  I thought I told you already.  Maybe I forgot about that, too,” said Melanie, and she giggled because she was a little bit embarrassed.

Hazel smiled at Melanie.  “That’s so cool, Melanie.  Everything seems to be going right now.  You get a manager.  Now you get to meet the producer.  I wonder what’s going to happen next, eh?”

Melanie nodded and smiled.  “Yes.  I wonder, too.  It’s really exciting.  Things are moving so fast, but they’re all good things, too.  They’re moving fast, but I think I can keep up with it.”

      “Great!”

Melanie and Hazel smiled at each other and looked like they were both in a dream world.

It was after school.  Melanie, Hazel, and Lawrence exited through the front doors of the school building.  Melanie looked around and saw in the small parking lot at the front of the school someone familiar.  Melanie smiled brightly.

“Oh, that’s Christina!” said Melanie.  Hazel looked up.

Melanie waved at Christina, who waved back as she was standing beside her car.  Melanie began to hurry down the front steps and quickly walked over to Christina.  Hazel looked at her carefully as she walked down the steps as well with Lawrence.

“She looks really young,” said Hazel, but Melanie did not hear what she said.

“Hi, Christina,” Melanie called out excitedly.

“Hi, Melanie,” said Christina.  “Are you ready to go?”

Melanie smiled and she nodded.  “Yes, but I want you to meet my friends first.”

“Oh, sure, no problem,” said Christina with a smile.

Melanie waved over Hazel and her little brother Lawrence.  Hazel and Lawrence came over to Melanie and she began to introduce them to Christina.

“This is my friend Hazel and her little brother Lawrence.  Hazel, Lawrence, this is my manager.  Her name is Christina.”

      “Hello,” said Christina, smiling brightly.

“Nice to meet you,” Hazel said with a smile.

Lawrence did not say anything, and his attention was somewhere else.  That made Christina a little bit puzzled.  Hazel saw that.

“Oh, please don’t mind my brother.  His attention is not always where it should be.  He’s autistic.  He was born that way.”

Christina smiled and nodded.  “Oh, I understand.”

“That’s really awesome.  I’m really glad to meet you.  So Melanie’s going to be a superstar idol pop singer!  It’s all because of you.  I’d like to thank you!”

Melanie was puzzled.  Christina smiled and blushed and laughed in an almost embarrassed way.  “Oh, it’s nothing.  I’m just doing my job.  Melanie and I will be working together to do things that we like to do, that’s all.”

Hazel glanced over at Melanie.  “Melanie.  What about your grandmother?  Does she know where you’re going?”

Melanie and Christina suddenly looked a little bit uncomfortable, as if they were both two kids who had just done something wrong and were trying to hide it.

“Um, well, Grandma thinks I’m going to stay in school to study,” said Melanie.

Hazel looked at both of them suspiciously.  “Oh…I see…”

Melanie and Christina began to laugh uncomfortably.

Hazel covered her mouth and started to laugh as well.  “Oh, well.  That’s okay.  Her Grandma wouldn’t like it so she might as well do it behind her back.”

Melanie smiled at Hazel and she nodded.  “It’s my dream and I want to make it come true.  It’s really got nothing to do with her, you know.”

Christina looked at her watch.  “Oh, Melanie, I think we better go.  The appointment with the producer is in about 45 minutes and we don’t want to be late for that.  We should get there with plenty of time to spare,” she said.

“Oh, right,” said Melanie.  She turned to Hazel and Lawrence.  “You two will be okay here, right?  I know your mom’s picking you up.”

“Oh, it’s no problem,” said Hazel.  “Good luck with everything.”

Melanie smiled and nodded.  “Thank you…”

With that, Christina and Melanie got into the car.  Hazel and Lawrence went to the bottom of the front steps of the school as the car began to pull out of the parking lot and then it drove away.  Hazel hoped that everything would go well with this meeting between Melanie, Christina, and her new producer.

Melanie was sitting on the front passenger seat while Christina was driving the car to Regal Records.  Her schoolbag was in the back seat of the car.  She stayed quiet as she looked at the outside through the side window and the traffic that passed her by.  Her hands were clasped together on her lap but they were clasped together rather hard.

Christina glanced over at Melanie.  “Melanie, are you okay?” she asked.

Melanie looked up at Christina, a little bit startled.  “I’m alright.  I guess…I guess I’m just a little nervous.  It’s not like I’ve met a producer before,” she said.  “I wonder what he’s like.”

“I heard that he already heard about your singing talent.  Someone must have told him about you, even way back when you had that audition.”

      Melanie tried to remember that.

Melanie closed her eyes and she gave a curtsey to the interviewers, who were her audience.  She looked up at all of them with bright eyes.  The interviewers still looked very speechless and very shocked.

“Thank you so much for listening,” she said to them softly.

However, she was starting to feel a little uneasy as they just stared at her.  And then the silence was broken.

“My God, she’s amazing!” one of the interviewers shouted.

“That’s it!  Call Mr. King immediately!” shouted another.  Melanie was wondering what had just happened and she looked a little confused.

“She has the perfect singing voice!  Tell them the audition is over!  Send everyone home!”

      “We’re choosing Melanie Thompson!”

“Oh, that was his name.  Mr. King?” said Melanie.

Christina looked at Melanie again, a little puzzled.

“What was his name again?  I think you told me already.”

Christina suddenly looked alarmed.  “Oh, no, Melanie, when you meet him, remember his name, please.  His name is Joseph King.  He’s the top producer at Regal Records and he is one of the best music producers in all of Canada.  A lot of recording companies overseas also know him.  He has a huge reputation!  Please don’t forget his name when you talk to him!” she said to Melanie with a worried look on her face.

Melanie looked startled, too.  “Oh, my, I’m sorry!”

Christina sighed with relief.  “I should be sorry.  We should both…we should both stop being nervous.  I’m a little bit nervous, too.  I have to admit that.  I know you’re really nervous.”

“Yeah, I’m nervous, but why are you nervous?” asked Melanie.

Christina looked at Melanie with a slightly embarrassed expression.  “Um…I haven’t met him either.  I just know who he is but I haven’t met him in person.”

Melanie started to giggle at that.  “Oh, my goodness…Well, I’m not alone, then.”

Christina smiled at her.  “No, you’re not alone, because we’re both nervous.  But we should try to stop being nervous.  Let’s just focus on what we have to do and everything will be fine.”

Melanie nodded her head.  “Oh, okay.”

Melanie and Christina looked at each other as they stopped at a red light.

“Let’s do our best, okay, Melanie?” said Christina.

Melanie smiled at her and she nodded.  She was glad that she was not alone in what she was feeling right now.  “You’re right.  Let’s do our best together.”

About a minute later, the red light changed into a green light and they continued to drive towards the building of Regal Records.  It was only a few minutes away.

Very soon, they arrived at Regal Records.  Christina parked the car in the parking lot at the back of the building.  She and Melanie left the car and proceeded to the front.  When they came in through the front, they headed for the elevators and they began to ride the elevator that took them to one of the upper floors of the building.

“I’m still really nervous,” said Melanie, while they were riding the elevator.  It was a good thing that there was no one else in the elevator with them.  “I hope I don’t mess up or anything.  I hope I don’t say the wrong thing to him and make him disappointed or something.”

Christina sighed and she smiled, trying to bring down her own nervousness.  “But it’s your dream to become a singer.  There are always obstacles and that’s true with any dream.  We just have to get past them.  Isn’t that right, Starry~en~Luv?”

Melanie looked up at her and Christina smiled again.

“Just take a deep breath.  Think about what you need to do.  Not about what might mess up.”

Melanie took a deep breath a couple of times and she felt herself relax a little.  “I’ll do my best.  I know what I have to do.  I just have to do my best at it.”

Christina nodded.  “That’s right.  We’ll both do our best.”

The elevator stopped at the right floor and the doors opened.  Melanie and Christina walked over to a secretary who was behind a counter.

      “Hello,” said Christina.

The secretary looked up and smiled.  “Hello, Miss Lane.  Are you here to see Mr. King?” she asked.

“That’s right.  We’re supposed to see him in about 10 minutes.”

“Great.  Please have a seat over there and he’ll be right with you.”

“Thank you,” said Christina.  Christina and Melanie sat down on the nice leather couch that was close by.  Melanie looked at the clock and watched the minutes tick by and they seemed to be ticking by much more slowly than she would like.

“Hey, Melanie…” whispered Christina.  Melanie looked up at her.  “Maybe we should have brought some music to pass the time.”  She smiled and almost giggled.

Melanie felt a little better already.  “Yes, I think so, too,” she said, and both of them giggled.  “I have a CD player at home.  Maybe I should have brought that.”

“Maybe you should always carry it with you.”

Melanie had a feeling that Christina had talked about that on purpose just to ease the nervousness that both of them were feeling.  “Thank you, Christina.”

      “You’re welcome,” said Christina.

A few minutes later, a man came out of an office that was nearby.  He wore a business suit and his hair was well-groomed.  He looked extremely professional.  He also seemed like he was in his 40s in age.  Melanie looked at him with a bit of amazement.  He looked like a very confident man who could deal with any type of business that was thrown at him.

“That’s him,” Christina whispered.  Melanie heard what she said and she gasped softly.

“Mr. King.  Miss Lane and Miss Thompson are waiting for you here,” said the secretary.

“Ah, perfect timing,” said Mr. King.  He walked over to Christina and Melanie, who both stood up.  Miss Lane, welcome.  Thanks for coming.”  He looked down at the tiny little girl that was beside her.  “And you must be Melanie.”

“Thanks for having us, Mr. King,” said Christina.

“How do you do, Mr. King?” said Melanie, who did her best to appear as ladylike as possible.  She was used to doing that, but for some reason, it seemed a little more difficult today.  She figured maybe she was trying too hard and she should just let it come out naturally.

“I’m doing great.  How are you both?’ said Mr. King.

      “Oh, we’re fine,” said Christina.

“That’s good.  Please step into my office.  This isn’t going to take long anyway, so don’t worry too much,” said the producer and he smiled at both of them.

He led both Melanie and Christina into his office and he closed the door.  He sat down on his chair which was next to large glass windows that had a perfect view of the Toronto city skyline.  He sat behind his large desk.

      “Please have a seat.”

“Thank you,” said Christina.  Both of them sat down.

“So, Melanie, I heard about that song that you sang at the audition.  Someone there called me like a frantic chicken and told me about you.  They were really excited,” said Joseph King.  “And since they were recording the video at the same time, I got to see you sing and I must say that I was really, really impressed by it.”

Melanie blushed slightly and she smiled.  “Oh, thank you so much, Mr. King,” she said.

“They all thought that you had the perfect singing voice.  They even sent home everyone else who were going to go for the audition.  I share their opinions as well.  I also think that you are a very good singer, even though you’re still very young.  The audition was originally for 10 to 15 year olds but in this case, we made an exception.  We didn’t even expect someone from that age group to sing so well either.  But since you surprised everyone with your amazing singing talent, everyone thought that they could do a lot more for you.”

“Oh, I understand,” said Melanie, as she blushed a little more.  “I hope I didn’t cause too much chaos with anyone.”

Mr. King laughed.  “Don’t worry about that.  You were certainly a big surprise, and surprises like that don’t come very often.  But it is almost always a good thing when big surprises like that happen here.  In our record company, it happens a little more often than in other companies.”  He glanced over at Christina.  “And you have an excellent manager to help you in achieving your dream as a professional singer.  I’m glad that you are her manager, Christina.  I heard many great things about you.”

Christina seemed to blush a little, too.  “Thank you, Mr. King.  I’m really happy that I can work with Melanie on this.  I mean, on her new singing career.”

“I’m very glad to hear that.  Melanie, even though Christina is new in the music industry, I know that you are in good hands.  She has some really good references.  She’ll take care of you very well.”

Melanie smiled and nodded.  “Thank you, sir,” she said softly.

“Anyways, I’m very glad to finally meet you, Melanie.  I’m very glad to meet both of you.  And now, we should get to the business at hand,” said Mr. King.

“Yes, sir,” said Christina, who smiled.

“The first thing that we should be working on would be your debut,” said Joseph King.  “For your debut, we’ll have you sing a very awesome song and it will be recorded and broadcasted on the radio.  Millions of people will be listening to your beautiful voice.”

Melanie was startled, but she knew that this should happen.  “Oh, my,” she said with a smile.  “It really is time for my debut, isn’t it?”

Christina looked over at Melanie, worrying slightly because she might have looked like she was making a fool of herself in front of the famous producer.  But it looked like she might have been wrong because Mr. King looked like he didn’t notice anything.

“That’s right,” said Mr. King.  “All new singers must go through their debut, their first song that is broadcasted on the airwaves.  And with your singing talent, I’m sure that it’s going to be no problem at all.  If I liked your song, I’m sure many people will as well.”

Mr. King leaned forward and began to look through some pages of printed material that were on his desk.  When he found the page that he was looking for, he took a couple of exact copies that were clipped to it and handed it to both Christina and Melanie.

“This will be the song that you’re going to be singing for your debut.  With this song and with this awesome singing talent that you have, we’re going to create a legendary child prodigy singer out of you,” said Mr. King.

Christina looked at the entire song quickly.  Melanie, however, was taking a much longer time as she read the lyrics of the song.  There was silence in the entire room and Christina was starting to feel a little worried.  Mr. King was waiting for Melanie to finish reading.

“Oh, Melanie, did you read the whole song yet?” asked Christina, trying to send her an urgent message that she was probably taking too much of the producer’s time.

Melanie looked up at Christina.  She could tell she was a little worried.  Then she looked up at Mr. King, who was looking straight at both of them.  He seemed to have a serious look on his face and Melanie felt a little nervous again.

“I’ve finished reading it.  I…just had to read it a couple of times,” said Melanie, but her voice did not sound as enthusiastic as it was before.

“Melanie?” Christina said, as she was a little puzzled.

Mr. King looked straight at Melanie.  “Okay.  I’m assuming that the song doesn’t sound very impressive to you,” said Mr. King.

Christina felt alarmed suddenly and she smiled at Mr. King but uncomfortably.  “Oh, that wasn’t it, Mr. King.  Melanie was just looking at the song and while it’s true that she’s a little bit nervous, I’m sure that the song that you just presented to her is great.  I mean, I read through the whole thing and I think it’s quite nice.”

Mr. King raised her hand towards Christina and she stopped.  Melanie looked a little uncomfortable about the situation that she and Christina suddenly found themselves in.

“That’s fine, Miss Lane.  But I want to hear what Melanie thinks.  What do you think of the song?  I want your honest opinion,” asked Mr. King.

Melanie looked over at Christina, who still looked worried.  Melanie looked up at the famous producer and she took a silent deep breath.  “I think the song is nice but…”

      “Melanie…” Christina whispered.

      “But what?” the producer asked.

Melanie felt uncomfortable but she had to speak her mind.  She absolutely had to speak her mind because if she did not, she might not be able to do things properly.  She wanted to sing from her heart and the song did not look like it would allow her to do that.

“I’m sorry, Mr. King, but this song.  I think it’s a nice song.  But when I look at it, and imagine myself singing it, I don’t think there’s enough emotion in the song that would carry over if I sang it.  When you sing a song, the lyrics should have emotion and express it dramatically, too.  So when you sing it, it really shows.  I…I hope I’m explaining it the right way.”

Christina looked even more uncomfortable.  “Um, Melanie…I really think that Mr. King would like us to sing that song…” she said.

Mr. King began to laugh and both Christina and Melanie were puzzled.  They both looked at him.

“I’m really sorry, Mr. King.  I’ll talk to Melanie more about it.  Maybe we should talk about it more and then we can go ahead with the song,” said Christina nervously.

“That’s alright, Miss Lane,” said Mr. King.  “I’m very glad that Melanie was able to express her opinion about the song I showed her.”

“You are?  I mean, that’s great,” said Christina, but she seemed very surprised.  Melanie was also surprised.

“Melanie, you should understand.  When I ask someone their opinion, I don’t like if they’re going to tell me what they think I want to hear.  Too many young singers have destroyed their promising careers that way.  But since you’re still young, I’m glad that you have the ability to tell the truth.  If you don’t like the song, that’s okay.  We can always try another one that you might like.”

Melanie and Christina looked at each other and they both sighed with relief.

“By the way, that song that you sang in the audition, what song was that?” asked Mr. King.

“It was a song that I wrote, sir.  It’s called ‘My Heart’,” said Melanie.

Mr. King smiled at her.  “It was a very nice song.  I’m glad to hear that you also have the talent of writing your own songs.  You should also develop that talent.”

Melanie had a great idea in her mind and she smiled.  “Mr. King, I’m so glad that you think I’m a good singer.  Being a good singer is what I want to be.  But I would also like to write my own songs.  That’s what I’ve always done, actually.  So if it’s alright with you, could I please write my own songs?  And could I please write my own song for my debut?”

Christina looked over at Melanie with a bit of shock in her face.  She knew that writing songs was a hard enough job on its own, especially good songs.  A singer has a tough job already.  A singer who writes her own songs is an even tougher job.

Mr. King smiled at Melanie once again.  “I’m very impressed.  You’re definitely going to be become a great singer one day.”  He leaned back in his chair.  “Go ahead.  I want you to come up with a song for your debut.  Put your heart into it like I’m sure you always do.  Christina?”

Christina looked up.  “Yes, Mr. King?”

“You both have two days to come up with a debut song.  We have to follow a tight schedule after all.  You know that.”

Christina smiled and looked very relieved.  “Thank you so much, Mr. King,” she said, with some excitement in her voice.

Melanie was also very excited.  “Thank you very much, Mr. King,” she said as well.

Mr. King leaned forward and looked at his schedule on the computer screen that was close to him.  “Anyways, I want you both to have a good night tonight.  Good luck on your song writing, Melanie.  Good luck to both of you.”

Melanie and Christina stood up from their seats.  “Thank you, Mr. King,” they both said together.

With that, they were both allowed to leave his office.  While they were walking towards the elevator, Christina sighed and took out a handkerchief and dabbed her forehead.

“Oh, my goodness, that was really stressful,” said Christina.

“I’m sorry if I made things hard for you,” said Melanie.

Christina looked at her and she smiled.  “Oh, no, don’t worry about it.  I’m the one who’s sorry.  I’m so impressed by you.  I think you really impressed Mr. King back there and I’m sorry if I had any doubts about you.  You really are a great singer and it will be great if you wrote your own songs, too.  I’m just surprised because a lot of singers don’t write their own songs.”

      “They don’t?” said Melanie.

“No, they don’t.  I mean, some do and some don’t.”

“Oh, I see.  But if it’s like that, then it’s hard to put your own feelings into your own songs, isn’t it?  It’s not as easy to sing from the heart.”

Christina smiled and nodded to her.  “You could be right.”

“Anyway…when I get home, I better write a new song for my debut,” said Melanie, with a very bright smile on her face.  Christina smiled with her as they both walked into the elevator that just opened for them.

“That’s so cool!  You’re working on your debut now,” Hazel said excitedly while she was sitting in the living room of her house.  She was talking to Melanie, who was in her bedroom, talking quietly on her cell phone.  Now that she had a cell phone, she could talk as much as she wanted with her friends and not feel guilty tying up the phone line at home and risking Grandma Annabelle’s wrath.

“Yeah!” said Melanie, who tried not to speak too loud so Grandma Annabelle would not hear her.

      “By the way…Melanie, what’s a debut?”

Melanie nearly fell off her bed at that one, but she steadied herself.  “Um…well, a debut is like the beginning of something.  For a singer, if they’re doing a debut song, that’s like the very first song that they’re going to sing for lots of people to hear.”

      “Oh, okay!  I understood now.”

Melanie sighed with relief and she smiled.  “Great!  Oh, also, the producer told me that I could write my own song, too.  He’s letting me write my own debut song.”

Hazel smiled excitedly and was trying hard not to scream!  “That’s so…amazing!  You’re so cool, Melanie!”

Melanie started to laugh a little bit.  “I have to write that song starting tonight.  I have two days to finish it.  I hope I can do it right.  I want to write a debut song that a lot of people will like and I want them to feel it when they hear it, too.”

“Melanie, that won’t be a problem.  I think you’ll do just fine.  Just write the song like you wrote ‘My Heart’ and that song that you wrote for the Christmas play.  They came pretty easy for you.”

“Yeah, but I have to make it really good.  It has to be really good and really nice, too.”

      “Are you nervous?”

Melanie sighed and smiled slightly.  “I’m a little bit nervous.  The producer said it’s going to be broadcasted on the radio in all of Canada.  I hope it’s going to be good.”

“You’ll do fine.  I know you will.  Trust in yourself, Melanie.  Oh, hey, by the way, can I ask you a question?”

      “What is it?”

“Do you have like a stage name that you’re using?  Or are you just going to use your real name when you’re a singer?”

“I wanted to surprise everyone so I came up with a stage name.”

“Really?” said Hazel.  “What is it?”

“Starry~en~Luv,” Melanie replied.  “My real self is Melanie.  But on stage, my name is Starry~en~Luv.”

Hazel smiled and giggled.  “That’s so nice and pretty, too.  It sounds just like you, but no one would know that it’s you until they see your face.  They might hear the name and music, but they won’t know who you really are until they see you.”

Melanie smiled, too.  “That’s why it’s going to be a surprise.”

They continued to talk for several more minutes.  Hazel really couldn’t wait until Melanie became a famous singer.  After the phone conversation and after doing her homework and studying, Melanie sat down at her desk in her room.  She was in her nightgown and was ready to sleep, but she did not feel like sleeping yet.  She had to sit down and start writing a new song for her debut as Starry~en~Luv!

She had already been thinking about it for the last few hours.  She wanted it to have something to do with chasing your dreams.  On the paper pad, she began to write the name of the song.

“Dream”

Vocals and lyrics by Starry~en~Luv

Melanie sat at her desk for a while, thinking about the song.  Lyrics began to form in her mind and music began to play from her heart.  She closed her eyes and she smiled as she let the music play in her heart.  Very soon, the lyrics and the music became one.

Starry~en~Luv began to write her new debut song.

Hazel was sitting on one of the front steps of the school.  She was waiting for Melanie to come to school this morning.  She had already brought her little brother Lawrence to his classroom.  She was resting her chin in her hands, and then when she looked up she saw Melanie coming towards the school.  Hazel stood up and she smiled brightly and waved at her.

“Hey, hurry up, Melanie!  Get over here!” she called out.

“Huh?” she said softly.  Melanie looked up but she didn’t look too excited.  She sighed and she felt a yawn coming to her so she covered her mouth with her hand.  She did not do anything to go towards Hazel any faster.  She just kept on walking.

Hazel was very puzzled when Melanie finally got to her.

“Gee, Melanie, what’s with you?  You look like you haven’t slept yet,” said Hazel.

“Pardon?” said Melanie, her voice sounding tired.  “Oh…”

Hazel gasped and she looked shocked.  “Hey!  Wait a minute!  Does that mean…does that mean that you stayed up all night and never got to sleep?” she exclaimed.

Melanie didn’t really have much emotional reaction to that.  “Oh, no…no, it’s not like that…I had some sleep.  Just some sleep.”

“What time did you sleep last nigh?”

Melanie thought for a moment about that, trying to remember what time she went to bed last night.  “Oh, I think it was…I think it was 2:00 am.”

Hazel exclaimed with great surprise, and it made her look funny.  “What!  Are you nuts?  Oh, wait a minute, why did you stay up so late?” she asked.

“I had to write the song…”

Hazel realized immediately what she meant.  “Oh, you mean your debut song?  You were writing your debut song last night so you slept really late, huh?  I thought you might have finished it already…like last night, before you went to bed.  Did you get to finish it?”

Melanie shook her head.  “No.  I couldn’t finish it.  I fell asleep on my desk.”

“Oh, my, how much did you finish?”

Melanie thought about that for a moment, too.  She tried to remember where she stopped.  “I think I did about…oh, I don’t know, I don’t remember.  I can show you.  Maybe that will jog my memory.  I’m sorry, I’m just really tired right now.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet.  Show me the song.”

The two of them sat down on the front steps of the school while a few students passed them by.  Melanie opened her bag and she drew out her paper pad, where she wrote down all the songs that she writes.

“Here it is,” said Melanie, her voice still sounding quite monotone.

Hazel took the paper pad and she started to read what was on it.  “Oh, cool.  It’s called ‘Dream’?” she asked.

      Melanie smiled slightly.  “Yes.”

Hazel started to read the song.

Dream…

Oh, make a wish upon a star (wish upon a star)

Oh, make your dream come true (your dream come true)

Dreaming a dream

The quest for a wish might make you happy, make you sad

But in the end, it will all be worth it, you will be glad!

Just dream!

Dreaming a dream, make your dream come true

Sing a song or write a story, anything you want to do

Whatever good thing your dream might just be

Never lose your hope, never lose your energy

Dreaming a dream (Just dream)

Dreaming a dream, make a wish upon a star

Go on a journey, you’ll go to many places afar

Always remember that I will stay and walk with you

And keep in your heart whatever it is you want to do

Dreaming a dream (Just dream)

Just dream!

Hazel smiled as she finished reading.  “It sounds really good so far.  Where’s the rest of it?”

      “I’m sorry, I haven’t finished it yet.  I said I wasn’t able to, right?”

“Oh, right.”  Hazel looked up at Melanie and she appeared to be amazed anyway.  “But still, it looks really good, even if you only have this much so far.  “I could never write songs.  You’re the only one I know who can write songs and make them good at the same time.”

Melanie smiled at her.  “That’s so sweet.  Thank you.”

“When do you have to finish it by?”

“Yesterday, in that meeting with the producer, Mr. King, he said I had 2 days.  That means, I have today and tomorrow to finish it all up.  After school tomorrow, I have to bring it to him with Christina.  I hope I finish it by then.”

Hazel smiled at her.  “Hey, don’t worry.  I’m sure you can do it.”

“Thanks.  But I only did the intro and the first verse.  I haven’t done the chorus yet and I haven’t done anything else either.”

“That’s a pretty good start though.  So don’t worry about it.”

Melanie nodded and she smiled.  “Okay.  You’re right.  I shouldn’t worry about it.”

Melanie was struggling with something that would normally never be a struggle to her.  Their teacher, Miss Langley, was explaining some things during math class and she was also writing on the chalkboard at the same time.  Melanie was trying very hard to take notes, but at the same time, her eyes were having a hard time staying open.  She was feeling quite sleepy.

She rubbed her eyes a few times and tried to focus on the chalkboard.  Even the teacher’s voice didn’t seem as clear as it normally did to her.  And at the same time, her mind was on that song that she was trying to write.

Hazel looked at Melanie, and she was starting to feel slightly alarmed.  Just as Miss Langley turned away to copy some notes from the math textbook and onto the chalkboard, Hazel wrote on a piece of paper and crumpled it and she threw it gently onto Melanie’s desk.  The paper ball landed on her desk and Melanie’s eyes went wide open.  She looked up at Hazel.  Hazel looked like she was worried.

Melanie took the piece of paper and straightened it out.  There was a note written on it.

      “Stay awake!  Hazel.”

She looked up at her friend again and she smiled slightly and she nodded her head a little bit, and Hazel got the message.  Hazel looked like she was relieved.  Melanie seemed to be wide awake once again.

Too bad it only last about 15 minutes, and Melanie was starting to doze off a little again.  Hazel looked at Melanie, and she was alarmed again.  She looked frustrated.  She was going to write on another piece of paper but it was too late.

Miss Langley’s hand made a slightly loud sound when it struck the top of Melanie’s desk, and Melanie was totally startled and made to become wide awake as well.  Melanie looked up at the teacher with a frightened face.

“Did you have a good sleep last night, Melanie?” said Miss Langley, and she did not look very happy at all, making Melanie quite uncomfortable.  The other classmates were looking at her, a few of them giggling.  When she looked at Hazel, she looked like she had just lost a battle, which was the battle to keep Melanie awake so that she would not get into trouble with Miss Langley.

Melanie looked down shyly.  “I’m sorry, Miss Langley.  I didn’t sleep very well…” she said very, very softly.

Miss Langley closed her eyes and looked down and shook her head and sighed.  “Must I rescue you again?  First, from humiliation in the cafeteria, and now, the fact that you probably slept very, very late last night,” she said.  She straightened up and walked back towards the chalkboard, and she spoke at the same time.  “Please do keep yourself awake as best as you can, Melanie.  If you can’t do that, go buy an energy bar in the cafeteria.”

There was more giggling in the classroom, but it stopped very soon.  Hazel sighed and shook her head and covered her face.  Melanie glanced at Hazel.  She felt guilty because even after Hazel tried to keep her awake, she wasn’t able to.  But now, she knew that she was going to stay awake because of the humiliation she just felt, being spoken to like that by the teacher.  She sighed softly and her mind went back to the song that she was trying to write last night.

It was after school.  Melanie was in the school library and she was in the same quiet study room that she had used when she had her first meeting with her manager, Christina Lane, with Mr. Wilkins.  She was sitting cross-legged and her head was resting on her arm on the table.  In front of her face was the paper pad and the unfinished song called “Dream”.

There was a knock on the door that led into the study room and Melanie looked up.  Hazel was standing there just outside.  Melanie sat up on the chair just as Hazel opened the door and went inside the room.

“Hey, Melanie, it’s after school.  What are you still doing here?”

Melanie sighed, looking kind of tired.  “I don’t know…if I can actually do this.  I’m trying to work on my debut song, but I can’t finish it.  And it’s due tomorrow, too,” she said softly, looking a little frustrated and sad at the same time.

Hazel appeared very concerned now.  “You can’t finish it?”

      “I don’t know if I can.”

“How far did you go this time?”

“I have a little more done from this morning.  But it still needs some more.  I just need a little bit more.  If I can just get that, then maybe I can actually finish it.”

Hazel went over to Melanie and put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.  “Do you want me to stay with you?  Would that help you?” she asked.

Melanie almost said yes, but she thought of her friend first.  She stopped herself.  “Isn’t your mother waiting outside for you?”

“Oh, don’t worry about that.  I can stick around longer for you, no problem.”

“Did you tell her that yet?”

Hazel looked slightly uncomfortable and she had a guilty smile on her face.  She began to laugh in a slightly suspicious way.  “Well…yes…”

Melanie gasped, and her eyes were wide open.  “You’re here by yourself?”

Hazel smiled and held her by the shoulders.  “Hey, I had no choice.  My friend needed help with something that’s really important, so I told my mom that I would stay with her until I know for sure that she’s done with it.  She told me to call her later when I want go home.  Besides, the library is open until what time anyway?”

“I think it closes at 5:00 pm.”

“Yeah, that’s right.  Come on, Melanie!”  Hazel looked like she was very determined as she sat down beside her friend.  “I know you can do it.  Maybe I should get pompoms and cheer you on like a cheerleader.  But I don’t know how to do it, that’s the only problem.”

Melanie and Hazel giggled at that.

“Oh, okay.  Thank you so very much, Hazel,” said Melanie.  “Thank you for staying with me.”

      “That’s what friends are for.”

For the next hour, Melanie tried to write her song.  Hazel would offer some suggestions sometimes, such as thinking about life experiences and things that are close to her heart and about fulfilling one’s dreams.  Melanie was thinking about them, too, and it certainly did help having Hazel by her side.  The two of them laughed together and spoke in whispers.  Sometimes, Melanie scratched off what she wrote and replaced it with something else, something better.

Hazel was reading what Melanie had so far.  “This looks really good, Melanie.  I really want to hear you sing this one of these days,” she said to her.

Melanie smiled.  “Oh, thank you.”  Then she looked a little more serious and though of something.  “Wait a second.  I think I need just a tiny bit more.  Here, I just thought of something.  She started writing again at the very end of the page.

Dreaming a dream, make your dream come true! (Just dream)

Dreaming a dream, make a wish upon a star (Just dream)

Dreaming a dream (dreaming a dream)

Just dream!

Melanie put down her pen and she closed her eyes and she smiled.  “I think that’s it…” she whispered and once again, Hazel stared at her and at the paper pad and the song that was written on it.  Hazel looked like she was totally in awe at Melanie’s totally cool style, whenever she finished writing a song.

“Wow, you finished it…” said Hazel, who also spoke very softly.  Normally, she didn’t speak softly, but this time, she just had to, because she felt amazed.

Melanie nodded and she stood up from the chair, holding the paper pad in front of her.  She turned towards Hazel.

“Here it is.  My debut song, ‘Dream’,” said Melanie, and she smiled in a calm but cheerful way.

It was morning again just before school was going to start.  Melanie was standing at the front doors of the school and she was talking on her cell phone.  She was speaking with Christina, her manager.

“I have the song.  I have it all written down.  It’s ready,” said Melanie.

Christina, who was at the other end of the line, was very happy to hear that.  “Oh, that’s great.  Just on time, too.  Today’s the due date of the song.  So I can go ahead and tell Mr. King that we will be seeing him later in the afternoon like planned, right?” she asked.

Melanie nodded and she smiled.  “Yes, that’s right.”

“Wow, that’s so great, Melanie.”  Christina was standing beside her car at the parking lot of Regal Records while she was talking on her cell phone.  “I can’t wait to see the song that you wrote.  What is it called this time?”

      “It’s called ‘Dream’.”

“Oh, wow.  That sounds interesting, too.  I really can’t wait to check out the lyrics.”

“When you pick me up from school later this afternoon after school, I would love it if you read it.  Well, I guess you do have to read it anyway, because you’re my manager, right?”

Christina laughed.  “Yeah, you’re right.  I know it is short notice.  I wish you were able to show me the song before this afternoon.  If you could do that, then if we need to make any revisions to the song, we can do that.  But I guess it can’t be helped.”

“Oh, okay.”  Melanie felt a little bit worried about that.  “Then…what if the song is not that good?  We won’t have time to make any changes then, right?”

Christina thought for a moment.  “Hmmm…well, don’t worry about it for now.  If we have to make any changes, I can ask Mr. King to reschedule the appointment.  But…I don’t really want to have to do that, so I hope your song…is really, really good.”

Melanie sighed and nodded.  “I hope so, too.  I did my best the last couple of days.”

Christina smiled at that.  “Well, if you did your best, I’m sure it should be okay.  Let’s not worry about anything.  Like I said, we’ll do our best, right?”

      Melanie smiled, too.  “That’s right.”

When it was time for the appointment, Melanie and Christina were sitting in the office of the famous producer, Joseph King.  When Christina picked up Melanie from her school just after classes, she was able to read the lyrics of the new song that Melanie wrote.  Christina thought it was very good and Melanie was glad that she liked it.  They didn’t feel that they needed to make any revisions, but what they thought might not necessarily be what Mr. Joseph King thought.

“So can you give me the song, Melanie?” asked Mr. King, as he leaned forward in his chair.

Melanie stood up from her seat and she presented her notepad.  On the very first page of the notepad was the song that she wrote, entitled “Dream”.

“I’m sure you’re going to like it, Mr. King,” said Christina.

“Is that so?” said Mr. King.  That made both of them a little nervous.  Mr. King took the notepad and he began to read the lyrics of the song.  Melanie sat back down on her seat.

There was silence in the room for about a minute.  But then, that silence started to become longer.  Surely, Mr. King would have finished reading that song already.  Perhaps he was reading it more than once, or he was scrutinizing each line very carefully.  Christina and Melanie were both nervous as the silence dragged on for another minute.  Soon, Mr. King’s eyes seemed to widen a little as he was reading.

“This…this is amazing, Melanie,” said Mr. King.

Christina and Melanie were both surprised.

“This song shows a lot of emotion and expresses what is in your heart.  That is how a song should be.  It’s amazing.  Everything that I’m looking for in a song is there.”

Christina and Melanie began to look very excited.  “Mr. King,” said Melanie.  “Does that mean…?”

Mr. King started to laugh.  “It’s amazing.  Not only are you an amazing singer, you are also an amazing song writer.  This is perfect for your debut song.  We will go ahead with your new song, ‘Dream’.  I think it’s absolutely perfect.”

Melanie gasped and she clasped her hands in front of her heart.  She had a very bright and excited smile on her face.  Christina was feeling the same way as she was.  Mr. King stood up and approached Melanie.

“Melanie, Christina, both of you did a very good job,” he said to them.  “Congratulations.  Melanie, your career as the singer Starry~en~Luv is about to start.  And ‘Dream’ will be your debut song, written by you.”

      “That’s wonderful!” said Christina.

“Thank you so much, Mr. King!” said Melanie.  They could not contain their excitement.

Mr. King smiled at both of them.  He offered his hand to Melanie and the two of them shook hands.  Christina looked on and she looked very happy as well.  Melanie had a very bright smile on her face.

Her dream really was going to come true.  Now that Mr. King has accepted her ability to write her own songs, she can continue with the next step of her journey to fulfill her dream.  For the rest of the appointment, Mr. King took Melanie on a tour of Regal Records and Christina was with them.  He introduced Melanie to many individuals who would be working with her.  They included those who worked in the recording studios, photographers, those who worked on costumes, hairstyles, and makeup, dance choreographers, and so on.  Melanie was very glad to meet every single one of them, even though there were many of them.  She was not sure if she would be able to remember all their names.

After the appointment, Melanie and Christina left the building and were on their way to the parking lot.  Melanie stopped just before she got to Christina’s car.

Christina glanced at Melanie.  “Melanie?” she asked.

Melanie closed her eyes and sighed, then she opened her eyes again and she smiled up at Christina.  “I’m really doing it, huh?” she said very softly.

Christina smiled at her and nodded.

“I’m really becoming a singer.  I’m on the way there.”

“Yes, you are, Melanie.  Yes, you are.”  Christina opened the passenger door for Melanie and she went into the car.  She entered the car as well and started the engine and began to drive away.

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “Hello, everyone!”

Hazel: “Hmmm…hey, who’s that girl anyway?  Isn’t she in our class?”

Melanie: “Yes, she is.  Her name is Kelsey.”

Hazel: “Oh, I remember her now.  I don’t really talk to her.  She has her own friends.”

Melanie: “She’s…I don’t think she likes me very much.”

Hazel: “Really?  What makes you say that?”

Melanie: “I was being nice to her but every single time that I tried to be nice to her, she was always mean to me.  One time, she needed paper for a quiz and I tried to give her some paper, but she said she didn’t want any.  She…said it in a really mean way, too.”

Hazel: “Really?  When I look at her, she doesn’t look like a mean person.  But I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover, right?”

Melanie: “That’s right.”

Hazel: “Actually, when you look at her, you’d probably think she was really pretty.”

Melanie: “She’s very pretty.  But…she’s still mean.  She doesn’t like me at all.  And you know what?”

Hazel: “What?”

Melanie: “For a while, she was ignoring me.  But lately, she’s been looking at me in a really scary way.  I think she really wants me to know that she totally hates me.  I don’t know what’s going on.  What did I do to her anyway that makes her hate me?”

Hazel: “Oh, I see.  Hmmm…that’s really strange.  I wonder what’s going on with her then.  Maybe she has something on her mind.”

Melanie and Hazel: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!  Episode 10: Kelsey!  The school rival appears!
