Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 4 and I would like to become a singer!”

Hazel: “And I’m her number one fan and her best friend of all time, Hazel!”

Melanie: “Number one fan?  You’re going way faster than me! I just went to the audition at Regal Records.”

Hazel: “The audition for new talent?!  What happened?”

Melanie: “I sang the song ‘My Heart’ for them, and then they were like all speechless and then they all started freaking out!  They said they had chosen me and that I had the best singing voice and they wanted me to work with them right away!  I won the audition!  I was so happy!”

Hazel: “Aaaaaahhhhh!  Oh, my gosh, that’s so totally great!”

Melanie: “Yeah!  But it’s too bad that we had to lie to my grandmother just to go to the audition.”

Hazel: “Yeah, well, that’s only because she didn’t let you go to the audition.  Just because she’s your grandmother doesn’t mean that she has the right to stand in the way of your dream!”

Melanie: “Well, yeah, I guess you’re kind of right about that.”

Hazel: “Of course, I’m totally right!”

Melanie: “But I still can’t believe I won.  I’m going to make my dream come true.”

Hazel: “I know you will.  And I’m going to be your number one fan, too!  Speaking of being a number one fan, something interesting is going to happen at our school these next several days.  It’s going to be interesting, I just know it!”

Melanie: “Yup, very interesting.  So here we go!  Starry Love Dream!  I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Melanie and Hazel were walking through the hallway of their school as they were on their way to their classroom.  They passed by a large bulletin board and then Hazel saw something that was interesting.

“Hey, Melanie, look at this,” she said.  Melanie stopped and she checked out what Hazel was looking at.  “There’s going to be a school play.”

Melanie smiled with delight.  “Oh, wow!  I love plays,” she said.  She began to read the text that was on the poster.  “’Auditions are now open for the year-end school play “Forever Love”, the story of a young couple separated by their families who hate each other.  All who are interested in taking part in this charming love drama please proceed to the drama classroom.’  That’s so sweet!”

Hazel giggled at that.  “Yeah, you love drama, don’t you?  All that love and romance and mushy stuff like that?”

Melanie gently hit Hazel’s shoulder.  “Yes, I do.  I like it a lot, thank you very much.  And I think I remember you telling me that you like that kind of stuff, too.”  The two of them started to laugh.

Hazel saw something else that was beside the poster.  “Hey, check this out.  It’s a list of characters that’s going to be in the play.  Like what kinds of characters they are.  It says here that if you want to play one of these characters, come to the drama classroom.”

Melanie looked at the sheet that Hazel was looking at.  “Hmmm…there are not very many characters.  I guess it’s because it’s an end-of-the-school-year play.  If it’s going to be a huge play, it should be in the middle of the year.”

“What kinds of characters are there?  A peasant boy, a noble girl, a singing angel…”

“Singing angel?” said Melanie.  She looked closer.

“I knew you’d say that somehow,” said Hazel.  “It says here that there’s a part where one of the characters is going to sing and the character that’s going to sing is the angel who’s trying to bring together the two families that hate each other.”

Melanie smiled brightly.  “Oh, wow!  That’s so sweet!”

“Why don’t you audition for that part, Melanie?”

Melanie looked up at Hazel with surprise.  “What?  Me?”

“Yeah!” said Hazel.  “I think it’s time for your singing debut at Haven Millers Academy.  You already had your audition at Regal Records.  Now, you have to have your audition here, too.”

Melanie and Hazel started to giggle softly.  Melanie thought about it for a while.  “It’s been a while since I was in a school play.  I always loved it.  I always got the singing parts,” she said softly.  “You know what?  I’ll go for it.  I want the singing part.”

“Awesome!  Then you’ll touch people’s hearts here.  Your first public performance in this town and it just happens to be in this school,” said Hazel.  Melanie smiled sweetly.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 7: How romantic, just like a school play

It was after school when the drama classroom became available for the people who were in charge of organizing the school play.  The students who were interested in taking part in the play were outside the classroom waiting and they were all lined up.  As Melanie and Hazel walked by them, they noticed that they were all from Grade 5 to Grade 8.  There were only going to be 10 characters in the play, so it was pretty simple.

“Everyone’s so much older than we are,” said Melanie.

“Not that much, Melanie.  The youngest ones are in Grade 5, so you’ll be okay, I think.  What does it matter anyway?  It was open to all students in the school,” said Hazel.

Melanie nodded and smiled.  “Oh, right.  I guess you’re right.”  Melanie lined up at the back.  Hazel was with her but not in the line.  “Well, here we are.  The wait might take a while.”

“Did you call your Grandma at home already?”

“Yes, I called her already.  I wasn’t sure if she was glad or mad about me going to an audition for a school play.  But she let me do it.”  Melanie sighed and leaned on the wall.  “Thank goodness, too.  She…didn’t let me go to the audition at Regal Records…”

Hazel smiled and winked.  “But you did anyway.  And you won!”

Melanie smiled, too.  “Yes.  But now I wonder what’s going to happen when she finds out that I became an idol pop singer without telling her.”

“You would have so many fans by then who love you, and they would hate it if your grandmother stopped you from singing, so don’t worry about it.”

Melanie took out a small pile of sheets of paper from her bag and she began looking at a certain part that was in it.  Hazel wondered what the papers were.  “What’s that?”

“This is the school play,” Melanie replied.

“What?  When did you get that?” asked Hazel.

“At lunch time, I asked one of the drama teachers if I could have a copy.  There were a few students there, too, who wanted a copy and I got one.  I was looking at the parts of the angel character.  I kind of noticed that she had to sing a song but there was no song in here.  I’m guessing the teachers have one, but…I already wrote one earlier.”

Hazel’s eyes went wide open.  “You did what?!  You wrote a song that fast?  You did that just for this play?”

Melanie nodded her head.  “Yeah, I did.  It wasn’t too difficult.”

Hazel looked terribly disappointed as she hung her head low.  “Oh, Melanie…you should tell me these things sooner so that I can get hyped up over it sooner rather than later…” she said, making herself look and sound like a very sad baby girl.

      “I’m sorry…” Melanie whispered.

But suddenly, Hazel looked up and had a big smile on her face because of that.  “You’re going to get the part, I just know it.  You’re perfect for it.  And you did all that without me noticing.  That’s pretty sneaky of you.”

      The two of them laughed.

It was time for Melanie to audition for the part of the angel girl for the school play.  The drama teachers were sitting down in the drama classroom and they began to talk to her.  There were a few students in the room as well.  And there were a few from outside who were looking in.  Hazel was waiting outside on a bench that was in the hallway, some distance away from the drama classroom.

“You’re Melanie Thompson, eh?  From Miss Langley’s Grade 4 class,” said one of the teachers, whose name was Teresa Walters.  “You’re auditioning for the part of the angel girl.”

Melanie smiled and she nodded.  “Yes, ma’am,” she said softly.

Another teacher approached Melanie and gave her a sheet of paper.  This teacher’s name was Olivia Mills.  “This is going to be the song that the angel girl is going to be singing in the play.  Please take a look at it and see if it’s something that you might be able to sing really well.”

“Thank you,” said Melanie, and she began to read it.  Melanie read the whole song and she looked up at the teachers.  “Um…is it okay if I sang a different song?”

“A different song?” said another drama teacher.  His name was Patrick Shaw.  “You don’t like this song?”

“It’s not that.  It’s just that…I read the entire play today and I came up with a song for the angel girl to sing for the couple.  I wanted to capture the emotions of the loving couple and the pain that they were going through and the angel girl’s wishing to bring their families together.”

Mr. Shaw seemed impressed and he looked at the other teachers.  “Oh, that sounds very impressive.  So you wrote another song just for the angel girl to sing for this play?”

      “Yes, sir,” said Melanie.

“Can we hear it?” asked Miss Walters.

“Yes, of course.”  Melanie smiled and she took a deep breath as she got ready to sing the song that she wanted to sing in the play.

Why are we still in love with each other?

Why do we still struggle to be together?

My feelings so strong, I don’t know what to do

There’s so much distance between me and you

It feels like there’s no point to love anymore

But my heart won’t let me stop loving you more

So much has happened, so much hurt and pain

I feel I should give up, so we can stop the strain

But if I were to let you go and just walk away

I would regret every living moment of every day

Melanie could tell while she was singing that the teachers were all looking at her with wide-eyed amazement.  They looked like they were speechless and Melanie continued to sing her song.  There were a few students from the outside looking in and they were watching with amazement as well.  They could not believe that this little girl could sing so well.

Hazel, who was still sitting on the bench outside, wondered what was going on.  She wanted to go inside, but the teachers did not let her get in the room.  Aaaaaahhhhh, I so want to hear that song!” she whispered to herself.

One of the drama teachers came out.  It was Miss Mills.  “Everyone, may I have your attention, please?  Auditioning for the part of the angel girl is now closed.  I’m sorry if you were auditioning for that part in the school play, but we have someone already who will be playing as that character.”

Hazel jumped out of her seat and she was very excited.  As a few girls left feeling disappointed, Melanie came out of the drama classroom and she saw Hazel.  Hazel quickly ran towards Melanie.

“Melanie!  What happened?  Did you get it?” Hazel shouted out loud.

Melanie was surprised by Hazel’s loud voice and she looked around.  “Hazel!” she said and she sighed.  “Well…yes, I got the part.”

“What!”  Hazel screamed, drawing a lot of unnecessary attention towards her.  “That’s so awesome!  I knew you would get that part!”

“Hazel, people are staring at us.  Please calm down,” said Melanie.

“Sorry,” said Hazel, as she laughed with an embarrassed and silly look on her face.  “I just got a little carried away for you.  But I’m so happy that you got it!  Did the teachers like the song that you wrote?  I wanted to hear it so badly, you know.”

Melanie smiled at Hazel.  “Don’t worry.  You’ll hear the song.  They liked it very much.  Actually, they were speechless for a while.  Make sure you attend the school play when it happens, so you can hear it, okay, Hazel?”

Hazel nodded with a big smile.  “No problem!”

A few days later, the students who were selected to play the characters in the school play “Forever Love” were gathered in the drama classroom.  They were practicing their parts with the drama teachers who were helping them.  Melanie was the youngest person there, and people thought it was perfect because they said she was so cute and small, perfect for a little angel girl.

Melanie was sitting down as she watched the boy and the girl who were playing the characters of the noble girl and the peasant boy.  They were Christopher Chan and Patricia Kim, and both of them were in Grade 8.  They were also the oldest characters in the play.  The two of them practiced their lines for the play and Melanie was very impressed by them because they were very good at acting.

Melanie observed the two of them as they practiced and there was something about them that she noticed.  But she was not quite sure what it was.  It was more like a feeling that she had, but she was not sure if she could put it to words yet.  But whatever it was, it seemed very interesting to her.

And then, Melanie noticed something at the door of the classroom.  The door was closed, but there was a little glass window on it.  Melanie was slightly puzzled because there was a girl there watching what was happening inside the classroom from the outside.  She wondered who she was.  She looked like she was about the same age as Christopher and Patricia.

And she also noticed that the only thing that girl was watching was the area where Christopher and Patricia were.  Was she looking at them?  Was she one of the people who wanted to audition but didn’t get any parts in the school play?

“I don’t want to lose you, my dear!  My heart would shatter and the pieces will be blow away by the cold wind if you were to leave me!” said Christopher, who was to play the part of the Peasant Boy.

“I don’t want to leave either!” said Patricia, who was to play the part of the Noble Girl.  “Why?  Why are you so worried about me?  I know that you want to be with me all the time, but my parents won’t allow it!”

“My lady, haven’t you noticed already?  I have always acted in the most honorable manner towards you and that should tell you something about how I feel about you!  And the reason for that is…my lady.  I am in love with you!”

The Noble Girl seemed very surprised.  “But…but my parents won’t accept it…My parents won’t accept it!  You say you love me, but I don’t know how I am supposed to feel!”

When Patricia and Christopher were done practicing, Melanie clapped her hands.  Christopher and Patricia turned towards her and then bowed.

“You two are really good,” said Melanie.

“Thanks, Melanie,” said Patricia, who smiled at her.  “I love being in school plays.  When I get older, I’m going to become an actress, I hope.”

Christopher smiled as well.  “That’s pretty cool.  I like plays, too, but to me, it’s more like a hobby.  Maybe when I’m a lot older, I might become an actor, too, but I haven’t decided yet.”

“Oh, there’s plenty of time to decide, not to worry,” said the drama teacher Mr. Shaw.

“Actually, you’re perfect for the part of the angel girl, Melanie,” said Christopher.  “We all heard you sing already.  And you wrote that song, too?  Didn’t you?”

Melanie blushed but she still smiled.  “Um, yes, that’s right.  I wrote it.  I wanted to feel the feelings of the characters by making up a song about it.  And the angel girl will sing it.”

“You’re amazing, Melanie.  You should become a professional singer,” said Patricia.

Melanie looked embarrassed as she laughed.  “My friend…said the same thing to me one time,” she said softly.  And, of course, she has already taken the first steps to becoming a professional singer.  It’s just that, in this school, nobody knew about it, except her friend Hazel.

At one point, Melanie was practicing her character.  She spoke to the noble girl and the peasant boy with great emotion, wishing so much that their families would stop quarreling and let the love of the young couple blossom and bring peace to their land.

“Peasant Boy, Noble Girl, please listen…” said Melanie, who was to play the part of the Little Angel Girl.  “This country has been ravaged by civil war for so many years!  Please help bring peace to this country and to the people living in it.  And the only thing that will make peace happen is your undying love for each other.  You are of two opposing families.  You know that your families hate each other.  But both of you know…both of you know that you are in love with each other, even you, Noble Girl.  Please don’t deny your own feelings.  Denying your feelings of love will only hurt you later on…”

The other students and the drama teachers were surprised again, because not only was she a very good singer, she was also a very good actress.

“That was amazing, Melanie,” said the drama teacher Miss Mills.

Melanie looked up and smiled as she blushed.  “Thank you.  It’s nothing, really.  I just love being in school plays.  I’ve been doing this since I was in Kindergarten.  We always had plays at the school that I used to go to.”

“You’ve had lots of practice then,” said Miss Mills, as she smiled down at Melanie, who nodded.

“Yes!  And I think it’s a lot of fun, too!”

Melanie was reading the play again just after school.  She was reading it as she was sitting on the front steps of the school.  It’s been a long time since she took part in extra activities at school, and she felt very good about it.  At her old school in Ottawa, she always participated in something, whether it was school plays or newsletter or library assistance.  This was her first extra-curricular activity at this school and she was having fun already.

“Hey, Melanie,” someone called out.  Melanie turned and saw Christopher, who stood beside her.  “What are you still doing here?”

“Oh, I was just reading the play again.  I like the story a lot, so I’m looking at it like a romance novel.”

Christopher began to laugh.  “You’re serious, huh?  I guess you would like that romantic stuff.  Where’s your friend?  What’s her name again?”

      “Hazel.  She left already.”

“Oh, okay,” said Christopher.  He looked slightly uncomfortable and Melanie noticed that immediately.  He was looking around as if he was looking for someone, and then he seemed disappointed.

“Christopher, are you looking for someone?” asked Melanie.

Christopher was startled.  “What?  Oh, no, I’m not looking for anyone.”

“Is something bugging you?  Is it about the school play?  If you want, you can tell me about it.  Maybe I can help you with something.”

Christopher began to laugh again.  “Oh, I’m not so sure that you’ll be able to help me on this one.  It’s just too complicated.  Well, maybe to some people, it’s not, but for me, it is.  And, also, you’re not old enough to handle things like that.”

Melanie was puzzled.  “What do you mean?”

Christopher shook his head.  “Don’t worry about it.  It’s not really important anyway.”

Melanie looked at him for a long time and he just stood there, looking straight ahead and sometimes would look around, as if he was looking for something.  Melanie glanced down at the copy of the school play once again and she was thinking for a moment.

“I don’t know.  Anyways, it’s not really a big deal, right?  I mean, everybody goes through that kind of stuff.  You’ll learn in a few years, I guess, and then you’ll understand.”

Melanie thought about what she had noticed earlier when Christopher and Patricia were practicing their lines.  It was something that she could not describe in words.  But now, she probably could, as she noticed more of it in Christopher.

She sighed softly and put a hand on her heart and she smiled.  “It’s really hard, you know.”

Christopher was puzzled.  “Huh?  What do you mean?  What’s really hard?”

      “You know, love.”

Christopher was extremely surprised and shocked.  He felt like his entire body was made of glass and was breaking into tiny little pieces.  “Ah!  What?!  What…what do you mean?”

“When you’re in love with someone, it’s hard to tell that person what you really feel.  You get worried about so many things!  Like, for example, you wonder if she doesn’t like you or something.  Or maybe, what if she’s already in love with you?  Or maybe, what if she’s in love with someone else?  It’s so simple and so complicated at the same time.”

Christopher looked like a comical character from a cartoon as he turned red all over.  “Ah…ah…ah, um, what do you mean, Melanie?  How…how…how…did you know…?”

Melanie started to giggle softly.  “I could tell while I was watching you and Patricia perform,” she said, and she blushed and put her hands on her cheeks and closed her eyes.  She looked like she was in some kind of dream.  “It’s so romantic!”

Christopher screamed.  Melanie just kept on smiling calmly as Christopher sat down on the steps with his head down.  “Dear God.  Am I really that obvious?” he asked.

Melanie glanced over at him and shook her head.  “No.  She doesn’t know that you’re in love with her.  I’m the only one who knows your secret, and I didn’t even have to ask you about it.”

Christopher looked at Melanie.  “How…can you do that?  Do you have like mental psychic powers or something?  You seem to be great at singing and acting, you must have some kind of weird superhuman power, too.”

Melanie laughed softly.  “Oh, no, I don’t have that.  It’s just something that I noticed.”  She sighed and glanced down at the copy of the school play again.  “But it’s so romantic.  Who would expect that the person who plays the Peasant Boy is in love with the person who plays the Noble Girl in the school play in real life?  That’s like a…that’s like a real life soap opera!”

Christopher sighed.  “Oh, please, don’t make fun of me.”

“I’m sorry,” said Melanie, still with a sweet smile on her face.  “But, Christopher, what are you going to do about it?”

Christopher looked up at her and he seemed much calmer now.  He had recovered from the shock of finding out that Melanie knew about his secret crush on Patricia.  “I don’t know…I’m not really sure.  I’ve never had a girlfriend before.  I would love it if she became my girlfriend.  She’s so perfect, and so pretty, and so sweet, and so cute!  Just imagine yourself when you become 13 years old!  Then, you’ll know what she’s like.”

Melanie blushed.  “Oh, okay,” she said softly, and she laughed.

“Wait a second,” Christopher said.  Melanie looked up at him and wondered what he was thinking.  “Melanie, since you’re a girl, you would know, wouldn’t you?”

      “Know about what?”

“Oh, I don’t know.  Like, what would a girl look for in a boy?  I know, you’re just 9 years old and you’ve never had a crush on anyone, but…”

“Au contraire, I’ve had tons of crushes.  I just don’t talk about them.  But I’ve never had a boyfriend in my entire life.”

Christopher was surprised.  “Oh?  Well, okay.  That’s probably good enough.  Tell me.  What do you think I should do to make her see me and like me?  I don’t know what to do.  I want to win that girl’s heart.  She’s the perfect girl!”

Melanie smiled at him and she nodded.  “You need to be a proper gentleman.”

“I need to be a proper gentleman?  What the heck is that?” he asked.

Melanie laughed.  “I mean, well, first, you have to be nice to her and really friendly with her.  Make it look like you want to be friends with her.  And show really good manners.  Open the door for her or say hello every single time you see her and ask how she’s doing.”

      “That’s it!”

      Melanie was puzzled.  “What’s it?”

Christopher stood up and turned towards Melanie.  “Melanie!  Please teach me how to be a gentleman!  Please teach me how to win a girl’s heart!  I know I could ask other boys about this, but they don’t know anything because all of them have been dumped so many times!  You have the unique perspective of being a girl, so it makes the most sense to ask a girl what impresses her about a boy!”

Melanie blushed slightly and felt a little embarrassed.  “Um, well, okay.  I’ll do my best.”

“Thank you!” Christopher said loudly.  Melanie started to laugh again.

For the next several days, the students who were going to participate in the school play were rehearsing their parts.  They would do this after school for about an hour or two every single day.  However, Melanie and Christopher always met each other after the rehearsals and Melanie would tell him some tips on what makes a boy attractive to a girl.

She would even have him practice.  While Melanie walked like a lady out of a door, Christopher had to hold the door open for her and graciously allowed her to go through first.  When Melanie was walking up the steps, Christopher would offer to hold her hand as she went up the stairs.  But Melanie also told him not to overdo it, because a girl would hate it if she was being treated like she can’t do anything by herself and Christopher made sure to remember that important point.

And Melanie also taught him never to insult a girl’s love for things that are cute or romantic or anything else that a boy would find cheesy and boring.

“What?  What do you mean?  Don’t insult a girl’s love for cute and romantic things?” asked Christopher, who looked quite puzzled.

“What that means is that if a girl likes something, you should respect it, even if you don’t like it.”

“Oh, okay.  Give me an example?”

Melanie thought for a moment, and she decided to use herself as an example.  “For example, I like romantic comedy.”

Christopher looked like he had just been struck by something.  He looked down and Melanie was puzzled by that.  Then he started to laugh, and as the seconds passed by, his laugh became more and more hysterical!  Melanie frowned a little and closed her eyes and shook her head.

“Melanie!  You like romantic comedy?!  Oh, my God, that’s so cheesy!” said Christopher, and he continued bawling with laughter.

Melanie sighed and then raised her voice just a little.  “But anyways!” she said.

      Christopher stopped suddenly.  “Huh?  What?”

“If I was Patricia and I said that I liked romantic comedy, and then you started laughing, she might feel insulted and not like you anymore.  The worst thing that could happen is that she would slap you and walk away and she won’t want to hang around you anymore.”

Christopher was taken aback and let out a loud gasp.  “Whoa!  You think so?  Damn.  I guess I shouldn’t do that then.”

Melanie smiled at him.  “Yeah, I’ll say you shouldn’t.”

The day of the performance came.  It was to be done during the late afternoon.  Most of the students would stay at the school to watch the play and some parents would also attend.  Melanie was checking out her cute white angel costume in front of a mirror backstage and she thought it was perfect.

“You look adorable, Melanie,” said the drama teacher Miss Walters.  “You’re the perfect little angel girl for this part.”

Melanie blushed at that.  “Oh, thank you,” she said softly.  She took a deep breath and placed her hands on her heart and she could tell that her heart was beating fast.  “My heart is pounding.  It always happens in every school play I’m in, no matter how much I’m used to it.  I want to do everything perfectly.”

“I’m sure you will.  As long as you do your best, Melanie, that’s the most important thing.”

Melanie thought about that and it sounded familiar.  It was the same thing that every teacher has ever said to her.  “You’re right.  I’ll do my best.  And if I do my best, I’ve succeeded.”

Christopher emerged onto the backstage and he saw Melanie.  “Hey, Melanie,” he called out.  Melanie looked up at him and he gestured her to come to him.  She could tell that it was something important so she went over to him.  He was already in his peasant boy costume.

      “What is it?” she asked.

“First of all, thanks for all those things that you taught me the last several days.  They’re really good.  And you know, you really could be the master of love,” said Christopher.

Melanie giggled and blushed.  “You’re so sweet.  Thanks.”

“Second of all…well, I decided that I’ll…confess my love to her after the play.”

Melanie gasped.  “Oh, that’s wonderful!” she whispered and she looked around and saw that Patricia was not at this side of the backstage.  She was probably on the other side.  “I think it’s perfect, too, confessing right after the play.  It’s going to be so romantic!  I feel like I’m going to melt!”

“Don’t actually melt, Melanie,” said Christopher.  “But, yeah, you’re right.  It’s perfect.  You were a great help, you know.  Thanks for everything.  Later, I’m going to tell her just how I feel about her.  I did everything that you told me, too.  I acted like a perfect gentleman towards her, like during classes and stuff like that.  And just to make sure that she doesn’t know that I’m in love with her, I was nice to all the girls, too.  It was just to make myself look good to her.”

“Very good,” said Melanie.  “She’s sure to like you.”

Christopher looked up and saw the beautiful Patricia and she was talking to one of the drama teachers.  She was dressed in her beautiful and shimmering Noble Girl’s costume.  “Whoa…Melanie, there she is…Just look at her,” he said, his voice hushed.  He was definitely in awe at her beauty.

Melanie turned to look at her and gasped.  “Oh, wow.  I wonder where they got that dress.”

“Are you thinking about shopping?” asked Christopher, who looked like he was suspicious.

Melanie patted him on the arm.  “I’m a girl.  Shopping is second nature.  And don’t make fun.  I’m sure Patricia likes shopping, so if you insult that, she won’t like you.  You don’t have to like shopping, but don’t insult someone else’s love for shopping.”

“Oh, right.  I have to be a gentleman,” he said with determination.

There was an announcement that told all of the participants of the school play to get ready.  Melanie, Christopher, and all the other students gathered together and they all got ready for their ultimate task, which was to put on a great show for the audience.

The Noble Girl looked up at the Peasant Boy, who looked like he was very concerned about what was going to happen to her if she were to leave the war-torn country.  The Peasant Boy seemed unusually affectionate towards her.

“I don’t want to lose you, my dear!  My heart would shatter and the pieces will be blown away by the cold wind if you were to leave me!” the Peasant Boy cried out.

“I don’t want to leave either!” said the Noble Girl.

After a few more lines of emotional drama between the two of them, a bright light appeared behind them.  In the audience, Hazel was sitting with her mother Isabelle and her brother Lawrence.  Hazel became very excited as the Little Angel Girl appeared.

“There she is!  She’s so cool!” shouted Hazel.

Isabelle looked at Hazel as if she had gone crazy.  “Hazel, she’s played several parts already.  This is not the first time she appeared on stage tonight, you know.”

“Yeah, I know, but each time she shows up, she’s just so cool!”

Isabelle put a hand over her eyes and shook her head.  “My daughter sure is strange.  It must be the genetics,” she whispered.

“Peasant Boy, Noble Girl, please listen…” said the Little Angel Girl.

Music started to play and it was very soft and soothing.  It was a song that was composed by Melanie herself and it was performed by the school band, especially their violinists.  On a large screen that was on one side of the stage were some words that introduced the song to everyone.

“Forever Love”

Vocals and lyrics by Melanie Thompson

Instrumentation by Haven Millers Academy Junior Band

Melanie began to sing the song for everyone with perfection, showing her feelings through her voice, her facial expressions, and her bodily movements.

In the audience, there was a little girl in one of the back seats and she was wearing the uniform of this school.  She sat with her hands clasped together on top of her crossed legs, and her hands were beginning to form fists.  She also wore a large sunhat so her eyes could not be seen.

“So, it’s you again…” she whispered, and she let out a sigh.  The sigh seemed almost angry.  “It’s…you…again…the one who went before me…”

No matter what, we’ll always be in love

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

Why are we still in love with each other?

Why do we still struggle to be together?

My feelings so strong, I don’t know what to do

There’s so much distance between me and you

It feels like there’s no point to love anymore

But my heart won’t let me stop loving you more

So much has happened, so much hurt and pain

I feel I should give up, so we can stop the strain

But if I were to let you go and just walk away

I would regret every living moment of every day

Forever love…

No matter what happens, we’ll always be in love

Fly with me through the sky on the wings of a dove

Together through the hardships, the darkness, the pain

Even if the sun was shining, even if it was pouring rain

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

So many things try to take you away from me

I wish we could just fly away and forever be free

The world frowns at our love for each other

But we mustn’t let that stop us from being together

My love for you is strong, it will never die

We’ll never lose each other as long as we try

Dear my love, the brightness of the glorious morning

Is what we’ll see when we pass through the suffering

Please stay with me and never let go of me

Hold my hand as we go where we can love freely

Forever love…

No matter what happens, we’ll always be in love

Fly with me through the sky on the wings of a dove

Together through the hardships, the darkness, the pain

Even if the sun was shining, even if it was pouring rain

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

No matter what, we’ll always be in love

Hand in hand, we’ll never let go

Forever love…

We’ll always have our love, our forever love…

The Noble Girl and the Peasant Boy embraced each other and then they kissed.  The Little Angel Girl seemed to shine even more brightly as the two of them kissed each other.  She opened her eyes as she held her hands at her heart.

“You’ll always have each other’s love,” said the Little Angel Girl.

With that, the audience began to applaud very loudly.  Some of them were speechless and shocked by the Little Angel Girl’s beautiful singing.

The little girl who was sitting in the back of the audience was also shocked and speechless, but no one could tell what she was feeling if anyone noticed her because she was wearing the large sunhat which covered most of her face.  She was not applauding at all.  In fact, her hands formed fists on her lap.  She was most definitely angry about something.

“So that’s the reason why…that’s the reason why…” she whispered.  It was an angry whisper.

Hazel was absolutely ecstatic.  “Melanie, you’re so awesome!  You’re the best singer in the world!” she shouted out loud.  Isabelle began to laugh as she clapped her hands.  Lawrence was clapping his hands as well, for he was in awe when he heard and saw Melanie sing once again.

People continued their applause as the Little Angel Girl gave her blessings to the young couple and told them that they would always be in love with each other and that they will always have each other’s love no matter what happens.

The play had just finished and it was a great success.  People were doing a standing ovation for the performance for several minutes.  Every student was in the backstage area.  Melanie was in front of the mirror and she was loosening up the front of her angel costume, since it was getting hot inside.  She could hear many sounds of congratulations going around.

“That was an excellent song, Melanie.  It was so beautiful,” said one of the girls who participated in the play, and she was very happy.

“Thank you,” said Melanie, as she smiled very sweetly.

“A job well done, Melanie,” said the drama teacher Miss Walters.

“Thank you,” Melanie said again.  She then suddenly saw an interesting scene that was just starting.  Melanie went to a certain area of the backstage where she would be partially hidden by a pillar.  She could hear a conversation begin between Patricia and Christopher.

“That was some performance, huh?  I think it was great,” said Christopher.

Patricia smiled.  “Yeah, it was great.  I hope I get to play in many more plays.  Someday, maybe I’ll make my dream come true.  My dream to become an actress,” she said.

“Cool.  I hope you do make your dream come true, Patricia.  I have my own dream, too, and I hope that I’ll get to fulfill that dream tonight.”

Patricia was puzzled.  “Your dream might be fulfilled tonight?  What do you mean?”

“Well, there’s something that I’ve always wanted to say.  I’ve always wanted to say this for a very long time.  And I’ve always wanted to say it to you.”

“To me?” said Patricia, who wondered what he was trying to say.  “What is it?”

“Patricia.  I am in love with you.  I would be really glad if you were to go out with me.”

Melanie smiled and a blush appeared on her face as she heard Christopher confess his love to Patricia.  She wondered what was in Patricia’s mind and heart when she heard that.

Patricia looked shocked.  The two of them looked at each other for a very long time and Melanie wondered what was going through their minds.  She looked at the two of them.  Melanie was puzzled.  The two of them were not saying anything to each other but they were looking at each other.  Melanie began to smile.  Perhaps this was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

“This isn’t the school play anymore, is it?” asked Patricia.

“No, this is for real, Patricia,” said Christopher, who offered to hold her hand.  She put her hand in his hand, and it made Melanie blush with excitement that she felt like her heart was going to burst as she watched the two of them.

Patricia looked up at Christopher, but her look seemed bothered suddenly.  “But…but I’m not ready to have a boyfriend…” she whispered.

Christopher froze.  And so did Melanie.

“What?  What do you mean?” said Christopher.

Patricia put her hands on her mouth and looked like she was about to cry.  “I’m so sorry…I’m’ really sorry.  But…being in love…is something that I can’t do right now.  I’m…I’m glad that you told me…but I’m not ready to be in love yet.”

Christopher seemed speechless for a while.  In fact, he had absolutely nothing to say.  He tried to think, eventually and he looked down for a while.  “I see.  Well…I’m sorry to hear that then…” he said.

“Please don’t be mad at me,” said Patricia.

      “I’m not.  I’m just…disappointed, I guess.”

Patricia sighed and she put her hands on his.  “I’m so sorry…I didn’t want to hurt you.  But I hope we can still be friends.  I don’t want to stop being friends with you.”  She looked up at him and she smiled.  “Hey, Christopher, don’t feel bad.  I’m glad that you felt that way about me.  I’m just…not ready for that kind of thing.”  She didn’t speak for a while and then she saw her parents some distance away.  “I’m sorry, but I have to go.  My parents are waiting for me.  I’ll see you on Monday at school, okay?”

Christopher nodded.  “Yeah, no problem,” he said.

With that, Patricia began to walk away towards her parents who were in the distance.  Christopher sat down on a seat that was close to the props that were on the stage.  Melanie came out of the shadows and she looked a little sad.

Patricia went past a girl who was not part of the school play.  Melanie saw that girl and she was just standing there at the side.  The girl looked like she was looking at Christopher for a long time.  When Patricia had walked right past her, the girl seemed a little anxious.  Melanie recognized her as the girl who was watching Christopher and Patricia through the door of the drama classroom several days ago, when they were rehearsing for the school play.

Melanie was wondering who that girl was.

“Oh, man.  I guess I’m destined never to have a girlfriend,” said Christopher, who was already in his regular street clothes.  He was outside the school, sitting on the front steps.  “I’m destined to grow old and die a lonely old man.”

Melanie was sitting just a few steps away.  She was also dressed up in regular clothes.  The sun had already set and the stars were in the sky.  But in the western horizon, there was still some brightness as the sun had set about a half hour ago.

“You’re not going to die a lonely old man, Christopher,” said Melanie.  “It had nothing to do with you.  You did everything perfectly.  It was just her.  She wasn’t ready to have a boyfriend.  You didn’t know that though.  That’s not your fault.  Of course, that’s not her fault either.”

Christopher sighed and looked up at the stars.  “Yeah, I guess so, huh?”  He stood up and he stretched with a groan.  “What an exhausting day.  I hope my parents come soon to pick me up so I can go home and sleep for a few days straight and only wake up to go to the bathroom.”

Melanie sighed.  “But don’t forget to be a gentleman.”

Christopher was surprised and looked at Melanie.  Then he smiled.  “You’re right about that, of course,” he said to her.  Melanie smiled sweetly and then they both noticed someone standing near the bottom of the steps.  They both looked at that person.

“Hi, Christopher,” said the girl who was standing there.

Melanie was puzzled.  It’s that girl again.  She was the girl watching Christopher and Patricia during rehearsals and the girl who was watching Christopher’s politely rejected love confession to Patricia.  Monica wondered who she was and what she has to do with this love story.

“Oh, hey, Gale, what’s up?  Come on over here,” said Christopher.  “Melanie, this is Gale Wong, she’s in my Grade 8 class.  Gale, this is Melanie, also known as the Little Angel Girl in the play.”

Gale smiled at Melanie.  “It’s nice to meet you.  You sang really well up there.  I’ve never heard anyone your age who could sing like that.  It was wonderful,” she said to Melanie.

“Oh, thank you,” said Melanie, and she smiled.  “It’s nothing.  I just love to sing, that’s all.”

“Yeah, but it was really good anyway.  And you were good, too, Christopher.”

Christopher smiled at that.  “Thanks, Gale.”

There was silence between the three of them for a while, and Melanie wondered why it was like that.  She looked up at Christopher and she could not see anything wrong with him.  But when she looked at Gale, she saw something in her face that made her smile.  Melanie felt something interesting, and it might have something to do with what she’s been wondering about.  Why has this girl been watching Christopher and Patricia?

“Hey, Christopher, can I talk to you for a minute?  I need to talk to you about something.  Alone, please,” she said.

Christopher was puzzled.  “Huh?  Um, yeah, okay.”  Then Melanie stood up and began to walk down the steps.  “Hey, Melanie, where are you going?”

Melanie turned around and looked back, and she smiled.  “She said she wanted to talk to you alone.”

“Oh.  Okay.  Sorry, I didn’t hear that part.”

Melanie walked away from them.  She went down the steps and she walked a short way, but she could still hear them talking from where she was.  Part of her wanted to know what they were talking about but since it was a private conversation, she told herself not to even bother.  But then, Gale said something to Christopher and it was more than loud enough for her to hear it.

“Christopher!  I’m…I’m in love with you!  Could you please go out with me?”

Melanie gasped and she turned around.  She could tell that Christopher was shocked and a very delighted smile appeared on her face.  “You mean…I was right?” she whispered.  She had seen it on Gale’s face, but she was not totally sure about it.  Gale was in love with Christopher!

“You’re in love with me?” asked Christopher.

Melanie came closer again.  “Yes, she is.  It was written all over her face when she came here,” said Melanie.

Gale turned towards Melanie with shock.  “What!  It was?!”

Melanie smiled and giggled.  “Well, I could tell.  But, still, it’s wonderful that you’re in love with him!” she said softly.

Christopher glanced at Melanie with a puzzled but slightly suspicious expression on his face.  “There you go again and your weird superhuman psychic powers again, Melanie!” he said.

Melanie looked shocked in a joking way.  “What do you mean?  I don’t have any weird superhuman psychic powers.”

“Well, never mind.”  Christopher turned to Gale and smiled as Gale turned towards him again.  “That’s nice, Gale.  Sure, I haven’t thought about having you as a girlfriend.”

Gale looked a little anxious all of a sudden.  “You…haven’t?”

“But that doesn’t mean that I’m not against it.  You’re beautiful and smart and you’re a really good person.  I’m glad that you were able to confess your love to me.  It makes me feel happy.  And, because of that, I do want to go out with you.”

Gale gasped and she became delighted.  “You…you do?” she said.

“Yeah,” said Christopher, who took her hand.  “Please go out with me, too.”

Gale seemed extremely happy and her eyes started to become misty.  “I’ve been…I’ve been in love with you forever!  For years!  I’m usually not good at these things, but I finally got the courage to confess to you.  I can’t believe it.”

“Cool!  I’m glad you found that courage,” said Christopher and smiled at her.

Gale turned towards Melanie, who was looking at both of them with a smile on her face.  “Melanie, that song that you sang in the play was so good and it really touched me.  When I listened to you sing that song, I found the courage that I didn’t know I had.  It helped me decide what I should do, and that was to confess my love for Christopher.  Thank you so much for your beautiful song.”

Melanie began to blush a lot.  This was the kind of reaction she was hoping for.  “You’re welcome.  I’m so glad…I’m so happy that it touched your heart in such a great way,” she said softly.  Melanie’s eyes were becoming misty as well.  “I love to sing, and I love to touch people’s hearts with songs.”

Gale smiled at her and she stroked her hair.  “And you’re very good at doing that.  I hope that you’ll keep on singing and touching people’s hearts.”

“I promise.  I will,” said Melanie.

The play had been performed on a Friday night.  When it was Sunday morning, Melanie left the house in regular summer clothes.  She was going to visit Hazel.  She walked by John Wilkins’ house and she saw him watering the plants early that morning.

“Good morning, Mr. Wilkins,” she said to him with a bright morning smile.

Mr. Wilkins looked up and saw her.  “Ah, Melanie, how are you this morning?” he asked.

“I’m fine, thank you.  I hope you are, too.”

“I’m doing great.  In fact, I’m doing very, very great!”

Melanie smiled but was puzzled at the same time.  “Not just great, but very, very great?  Did something good happen?” she asked.

“Yes, something that is very good.  It’s something that is very good for you, in fact.  Someone at Regal Records wants to meet you.”

Melanie blinked a couple of times.  “Someone from Regal Records wants to meet me?  Who is it?”

“Your new manager,” said Mr. Wilkins.

It was a shock.  Melanie felt like she was suddenly whisked away and taken up into heaven.  “My…my…my manager?!” she cried out loud with pure excitement.

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “I’m so scared, I’m so nervous, I don’t know what to do, but I feel so happy and so excited at the same time!”

Hazel: “Why?  What happened?  Did something happen?”

Melanie: “Yeah!  Something really good!  My new manager!  I’m going to meet my new manager from Regal Records.”

Hazel: “What?!  You’re meeting your new manager?!”

Melanie: “Yeah!  And I heard that she’s one of the best that they have for me.  She’ll help me become a famous idol pop singer!”

Hazel: “That’s so awesome!  Things are really falling into place for you now!  First the audition, which you completely, absolutely, positively dominated, you blew everyone away that was there!  You killed everyone!”

Melanie: “Ah, kill?  I’m not so sure that’s the right word…”

Hazel: “And then, there’s your new manager!  How cool is that?!”

Melanie: “Very cool.  But I’m so nervous, too.  I wonder what I should say to her.  She’s like…going to be looking after me for as long as I’m a singer.”

Hazel: “Just treat her like you would treat your mother.  I think managers for singers are there to help them with their singing careers.  It’s the same with actresses on television.  Hey, I thought you knew that already.”

Melanie: “Actually, I did.  I’m just…nervous, that’s all!”

Melanie and Hazel: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!  Episode 8: The first time I met my manager
