Last time on Starry Love Dream!

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “My name is Melanie!  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 4 and I would like to become a singer!”

Hazel: “Do you always have to say that every single start of an episode?”

Melanie: “Why?  What’s wrong with it?  You have to start an episode properly, don’t you?  It has to start with my dream to be a singer!”

Hazel: “Oh, well, okay.  If it’s about your dream, then that should be okay!”

Melanie: “Thank you, Hazel!”

Hazel: “No problem!”

Melanie: “Wait!  I have to do the review first!”

Hazel: “You’re forgetting things.”

Melanie: “Anyways…last time, I met a new friend and her name is Hazel!  She’s really nice.  And I really hope that we can be very, very good friends.  No matter what happens, I hope that she and I will always be together!  And you know what, I think my teacher Miss Langley is starting to like me, even if it’s just a little bit.  She had me answer a question in class for the first time!  Oh, another thing, I was a little sad that some of Hazel’s own friends abandoned her just because she began to make friends with me!”

Hazel: “Now, let’s not worry about that.  If they really were my friends, they wouldn’t have said those mean things about you.”

Melanie: “You have such a good heart, Hazel.  I hope that things will be okay for you though.”

Hazel: “Oh, don’t worry about it!  Everything will be cool!  I promise!”

Melanie: “Thank you so much, Hazel!  And now, for Starry Love Dream, I wonder what’s going to happen next!  Stay tuned!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

Melanie’s alarm clock was ringing but she was already awake.  She had awakened at least an hour before her alarm clock tried to do its job.  She was sitting at her window in her bedroom so she walked over to the alarm clock and turned off the alarm function.

It was another beautiful day outside.  She had opened the curtains wide open so that she could feel the warmth of the gentle sun rays.  She put on her slippers and then she did what she usually did in the morning to get ready for the day.

She changed into her school uniform and she got her schoolbag ready.  She went down the stairs and she left her schoolbag at the door.  She went to the kitchen and saw Grandma Annabelle there.

“Good morning, Grandma,” said Melanie, with a happy smile on her face.

Grandma did not say anything at first and Melanie was starting to feel a little uncomfortable again.  Then, Grandma turned around and looked at her.

Without a smile, she responded.  “Good morning, Melanie.  Please have your breakfast now.”

Melanie wondered if Grandma was always like that.  She would be very strict, and yet say nice things but without a nice look on her face.  Sometimes, she wonders if she even meant the nice things she said, though they were very few.

“Thank you,” said Melanie as she sat down to have her breakfast.

Grandma sat down as well to read the newspaper.  When she saw an article that was about Melanie’s father, she quickly turned the page, for she did not wish to see it.  If she saw it, she would just become upset about it, and she did not want to be upset this morning.

There was no conversation.  Melanie finished her breakfast and put the used dining materials on the kitchen sink and was going to start washing it.

“That’s fine, Melanie.  Leave them there and I will take care of them,” said Grandma, without looking up from the newspaper.

Melanie stopped.  “Oh, okay, Grandma, but I would be happy to do it though, if you want me to.”

“Like I said, I will take care of them.”

Melanie was startled slightly.  “Okay, Grandma.”  She headed for the exit of the kitchen.  “I’m going to school now.  I hope you have a good day,” she said with a smile.

      There was no response.

Melanie got ready to leave.  She put on her shoes and took her schoolbag and lunch bag, and she left the house.  She began to walk down the sidewalk towards her school.

“I wonder if Grandma Annabelle has always been like that.  I have never seen her smile and I have never seen her sad or happy about anything.  Most of the time, it looks like she doesn’t have any emotions, and sometimes, the only emotions she looks like she has is getting angry.  It’s…kind of scary.  She’s been angry at me before, and she’s really scary when she gets angry.  I wonder what’s on her mind and in her heart that she’s almost always so calm and strict at the same time.  Is that just the way she is or is there something more to it?  But anyways, when I fulfill my dreams to become a singer when I’m older, maybe she might listen to my songs and maybe they will touch her heart.  I hope they do.  And then…maybe Grandma and I can have a better relationship, because right now…it looks like we don’t even have one.”

Melanie looked up at the sky.  It was a clear day and the birds were chirping.  It was a little bit cool in the morning, but it felt very good.  Later on, it will be quite warm.  The sun was shining in the sky and Melanie smiled.

“It’s a really good day today…” she said softly.

Melanie almost giggled and she sighed with a slight smile on her gentle face.  She started to walk a little faster towards her school.

Starry Love Dream

Episode 4: The first time people here heard me sing

Grandma Annabelle put down the newspaper as she thought about what Melanie has been for the last few days.  She smiled slightly as she thought about her.  Since the day that Melanie met a little girl named Hazel Callaway, who was apparently her classmate, she seemed to be happier lately.  Grandma was glad that her granddaughter had made friends with someone, and is now no longer as depressed as she was before.

It was difficult to look at Melanie before because of the sadness that she was always showing through her face.  Even though she tried to hide it with a smile, it still showed through her eyes.

“That little girl has found some happiness.  I just hope that it lasts,” she said softly.

Then she noticed that the picture of Premiere Thompson was on the newspaper and she frowned.  She sighed and shook her head.

“Mark.  What a fool.  I’m not going to let you take away Melanie’s happiness again.  Just like you’ve done so many times in the last few months.”

Grandma closed the newspaper and she stood up.  She began to wash the dishes that were left in the kitchen sink.

Hazel was standing at the front of the school property as a car drove away.  She waved at the car as it drove away.  Her mother, who was driving the car, had dropped her off at school.  After a few minutes of waiting and sitting down on the steps that led up to the entrance of the school, she looked up and saw a little girl approaching her.

      “Melanie!” she called out.

Melanie saw her as she was walking.  “Huh?”

“Hurry up and get your tiny little butt over here!” Hazel said jokingly.

Melanie started to run towards the school.  Once she got to Hazel, she leaned on the railing trying to catch her breath.

“Hazel,” she started, but she was still trying to catch her breath.  “Good morning.”

      “Good morning,” said Hazel happily.

“Did you wait a long time for me?  You don’t have to wait for me here.  Or, if you want, I can come a little bit earlier.”

Hazel thought about it for a second.  “Yeah, why don’t you come a little bit earlier starting tomorrow?  Then we can hang out together.  And we can go to the library if you want.  I like being in the library.  It’s very quiet and peaceful there.”

“Oh, okay.  I love going to the library.”

“Yeah, someone like you would definitely love going to the library.”  Hazel started to giggle and Melanie smiled.

“Let’s go around to the school park for now.  It’s still 15 minutes before class starts.”

Melanie agreed and the two of them went to the school park.  As they walked past some students on the way, they saw four girls standing altogether.  The four girls were staring at Melanie and Hazel.  They both noticed the four girls, Dinah, Tara, Anita, and Karen.

“Don’t look at them,” said Hazel.  Melanie nodded and she looked down.

Melanie and Hazel went past them without anyone saying a word.  But Melanie could tell that they were very bothered by the two of them being together.

      “I’m so sorry…” said Melanie.

      “Sorry?  Sorry for what?”

“That you had to leave your friends to be friends with me.”

Hazel smiled and she shook her head.  “Oh, no, don’t be sorry.  It couldn’t be helped, right?  They were acting mean.  I can’t be friends with people who are like that.  We just won’t get along.  Real friends can’t be like that.”

Melanie knew that, and in many ways, she knew that Hazel was right about that.  But she could not help feeling sad, because the relationship between Hazel and those four girls were no longer nice.  It probably was not nice to begin with, but there might have been a possibility that it might have become nice later on.  She put her hand on her heart, feeling a little bit of hurt.

“Don’t feel bad.  You’ll be okay,” said Hazel.

Melanie looked up at Hazel and she agreed with her after a few moments, even though she was a little bit uneasy.

“She just ignored us, just like that,” said Tara.

The four girls who used to be friends with Hazel all stood together near the wall.  They were watching Hazel as she was walking away with her friend Melanie.

“I can’t believe she just left us.  She left us just for that girl?” said Dinah.

“That’s just wrong.  That’s just totally wrong,” said Anita.

“I guess that means that Hazel really is gone forever, huh?” said Karen.

Tara sighed and she shook her head, and she had a sad look on her face.  “My mom said that girl is trouble.  Melanie, I mean.  She’s trouble because her father is trouble.  Like father, like daughter, that’s what she said to me the other night.”

“What are we going to do?” asked Anita.

“I don’t think there’s anything we can do,” said Karen.  “Once Hazel makes up her mind about something, there’s no going back.  Besides, if we try to get her back, she’s just going to get very angry at us and probably hurt us, too.”

“I know,” said Dinah.  “Maybe…maybe we should just leave them alone.”

Tara looked at all of her friends and she nodded to that.  “Yeah, you’re right.  Let’s just forget about Hazel now.  And forget about that girl Melanie.”

Miss Langley was realizing something that she has noticed in the past month or so.  It seems that every single test and assignment that was done by Melanie Thompson was done very well.  All of them had A-plus grades on them.  While she was teaching English, she had a word that she wanted someone to try to spell for everyone.

It was the word that Melanie had asked her about some time ago.

“Here’s an interesting word.  I learned that this is the longest word in the English dictionary.  So is everyone ready for me to say the word?” said Miss Langley.

Some of the students appeared to be worried that they might not be able to get this one.

Miss Langley giggled softly.  “Alright, here we go.  The word is ‘disestablishmentarianism’.  Who can spell that one?” she said.

The students looked very shocked.  “Oh, my gosh!  What kind of a word is that?!” said one of the girls whose name was Anita.

“Like I said, it’s the longest word in the dictionary.  At least, I think it’s the longest word in the entire dictionary,” said the teacher, and she laughed.  “I’m serious, everyone.  Will someone be able to spell that word?”

Melanie raised her hand slowly.  In fact, she was the only one who raised her hand, and the other students were surprised by that.

Miss Langley smiled.  “Okay.  Melanie, please spell ‘disestablishmentarianism’.”

Melanie took a deep breath.  “Disestablishmentarianism.  D-I-S-E-S-T-A-B-L-I-S-H-M-E-N-T-A-R-I-A-N-I-S-M.  Disestablishmentarianism,” she answered.

The teacher was surprised, but she had a feeling that Melanie would get it before anyone else.  She had, after all, heard of the word before.  “Very good, Melanie.  There you have it.  That’s the longest word in the English dictionary.”

Melanie smiled and she looked down a little on her notebook.  She felt good all of a sudden.

The students were still shocked as they stared at Melanie.  Jim, who was one of the students, raised his hand and the teacher acknowledged him.

      “Yes, Jim.  What is it?”

“Miss, what does that mean anyway?  Disestablish-something-or-other,” asked Jim Castro.

Miss Langley thought about it for a moment.  “Well, it’s kind of like this.  It’s what you call someone who’s part of a group that’s an official group, like a government group, for example, or maybe a religious group.  That person would be against having church being supported by the government.  It’s something like that.  It’s a new word for me, too, so I don’t understand it completely yet either.”

“I’ve never heard of that word before.  It’s so long,” said one of the girls, whose name was Martha.

“I think it sounds really cool,” said a girl named Natasha.

“And I can’t believe Melanie knew how to spell it,” Kelsey whispered with a frown, but she did not let anyone else hear what she said.  She glanced over at Melanie, who was as quiet as always.  “Maybe she’s smarter than she looks.  I wouldn’t like that one bit.”

Natasha heard a part of what Kelsey had said.  “Huh?  What did you say, Kelsey?” she asked.

Kelsey looked up at Natasha.  “What?  Oh, it’s nothing,” she said.

Natasha looked at Kelsey in a strange way.  “You should quit talking to yourself, Kelsey.”  And then she shook her head.

Kelsey just ignored that and she looked at Melanie for a while again.  She was wondering if there were any other surprises this girl might have in store for everyone.

At the end of the school day, Hazel and Melanie left the school through the front exit.  They both went down the stairs at the front of the school and Hazel waved at someone who was standing on the sidewalk.  There was a car parked on the side of the street as well.

      “Who is that?” asked Melanie.

“That’s my Mom,” said Hazel.  “Come.  I’ll introduce you to her.”

Hazel took Melanie’s hand and led her down the steps quickly and then to the sidewalk, where she met with her mother.  She seemed like a very nice-looking woman, someone that you could be friends with, and a little bit young in appearance.

“Hi, Hazel,” said Hazel’s mother, who smiled happily.

“Hi, Mom!  Here!  I want you to meet my friend.  Her name is Melanie Thompson.”

Hazel’s mother smiled down at Melanie, who seemed shy but appeared very friendly anyway.  “Hello, Melanie.  It’s very nice to meet you.  I’m glad you’re friends with my daughter,” said the mother.  Her name was Isabelle Callaway.

Melanie smiled and curtsied slightly.  “Please to meet you, Miss Callaway,” she said softly and with a very friendly tone of voice.

“I also want you to meet my little brother,” said Hazel.

She gestured towards the back seat of the car and she opened the door.  There was a little boy there who was probably about 5 or 6 years old.  The little boy did not look up, and there was an expression on his face that Melanie noticed immediately that made her a little bit puzzled.

“This is my little brother Lawrence.”  Hazel turned towards her brother.  Lawrence, please say hi to my friend.  Her name is Melanie.  Please call her Melanie.”

Melanie noticed how she was talking to him, too, as if she was talking to an infant.

“Come on, Lawrence.  Look this way, okay?  Your big sister is asking you nicely to look this way.”  Hazel was trying to get his attention, and when she did, he looked up at Melanie, and Hazel was delighted.  “That’s very good, Lawrence.  See?  That’s my friend Melanie.  Say hi to her.”

“Hi!” said the little boy, but it didn’t sound like the typical greeting.  It sounded more like he screamed.  He seemed to smile and then he quickly found something else that grabbed his attention.  In fact, his attention seemed to constantly shift.

“Nice to meet you, Lawrence,” said Melanie, with a smile on her face, but it was too late.  Lawrence was already paying attention to other things.  Melanie looked up at Hazel, and she knew what she was going to ask.

      “Hazel?”

“My brother has autism.  He’s autistic.  He was born like that.”

Melanie realized that and she looked like she was thinking.  “Oh, I see.”

”It’s hard to talk to him sometimes, but as he gets older, it’s getting a little bit easier, but slowly.  And, also, he is in Grade 1 here.  I’m sure you haven’t seen him yet because you don’t see me go to the Grade 1 area very much.  I go everyday to take him there in the morning, but you’re not here yet in the morning so you don’t see me do that.  In the afternoon, Mom picks him up from the Grade 1 special class and then waits for me at the front of the school,” explained Hazel.

Melanie glanced at Lawrence again and her heart felt a little bit of ache.  He was a cute little boy but he suffered from something that he was born with.  It sounded unfair, but at the same time, she had to pity him.  And yet, he seemed like he had no problems at all.  He would smile and laugh as if nothing was wrong, and it made Melanie smile a little.

“I understand,” she said.  Melanie came a little closer and smiled at Lawrence.  “Hi, Lawrence.  I’m very happy to meet you.”

Lawrence did not seem to notice that she was there or was even listening to what she was saying.  But, still, Melanie tried her best.  She didn’t really know what autism was, but she knew that if she tried her best to be friendly, it would be fine.

“I’m so glad that I met your sister.  She’s a very good sister.  I think you’d be very proud of her.  I’m sure that you would.”

“Melanie,” said Hazel, looking a little bit embarrassed and she shook her head with disbelief and smiled.

“But it’s true,” said Melanie, and spoke to Lawrence again.  “I hope we can be good friends, too.”  When she was done talking to Lawrence, she looked up at Hazel.  “Thank you so much for introducing me to your mother and your brother.”

      “Oh, you’re welcome!” said Hazel.

Isabelle seemed just as happy as Hazel.  Melanie noticed that again and it seemed to her that this family was a very happy family.  It made her smile and, once again, it felt like a warm blanket had surrounded her and comforted her.

Melanie looked up at Hazel and asked her a question.  “What about your dad?”

“My Dad?” said Hazel, and she smiled.  “He’s a powerful businessman.  He travels the world all the time.  Right now, he’s in New York City.”

      “Oh, I see.”

“And if you’re lucky, you might just get to meet him,” said Hazel, and she started to laugh.  Isabelle laughed also.

“If he travels a lot, it might be hard to meet him,” said Melanie.

“It will be.  But someday, I’m sure you will.  It just might take a little time.”  Hazel looked up at her mother.  “Right, Mom?”

“That’s right,” said Isabelle.  She glanced at her watch.  “Anyways, Hazel, we have to go now.  I’m glad to meet your friend.”   She smiled brightly.  “Let’s get in the car now.”

“Okay, Mom!”  She and Melanie faced each other.  “Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, right?  And like I said earlier, please try to come sooner so that you can meet with me.”

Melanie nodded to that and she smiled.  “Sure!  Thank you!  I’ll do my best.  I’ll try to wake up earlier, too.  This morning, I woke up early, too, you know.”

“Oh, that’s good.  Just do the same thing tomorrow,” said Hazel, and she laughed some.

Hazel went to open the door at the back seat of the car and she went inside, sitting beside her little brother.  As the car started, she opened the car window.

      “See you tomorrow!”

Melanie waved at her as she stepped backwards a few steps.  “See you tomorrow,” she said.

The car began to drive away.  Melanie smiled and was glad that she met Hazel’s family.  Then she wondered about Hazel’s father.  Hazel said that he travels a lot, and if it’s like that, then that means that they probably don’t see each other very often.  But despite that, Hazel and her mother and her brother all seemed very happy.  This whole family was a very happy one.

Melanie began to walk home, feeling a warm glow surrounding her.

The alarm clock did not ring at all.  Melanie opened her eyes quickly and she looked up at the clock that was on the small table beside her bed.  She woke up at exactly the hour that she always wakes up every single morning to wake up for school.  She could have sworn that she had set the alarm clock to wake her up one hour earlier, but it did not ring.  When she inspected it, she saw that the alarm itself was not even turned on.

“Oh…I didn’t even turn on the alarm last night,” she said and she sighed softly.

Hazel wanted her to come earlier starting today.  Melanie suddenly remembered that and she got up quickly and she did everything that she always did to get ready for school in the morning.  She had a shower and she washed her hair and she brushed her teeth.  She changed into her school uniform and did everything to make herself beautiful and cute in front of the mirror.

Melanie hurried down the stairs with her schoolbag.  She was feeling rather rushed and flustered.  She went to the kitchen and noticed that Grandma had not yet finished making breakfast for her.

      “Oh, Grandma!” Melanie called out.

Grandma turned, noticing that Melanie was rushing things.  “What is it?” she asked.  “What are you rushing for so early in the morning?  You’re 9 years old, not 19.  What do you have to be stressed out about?”

“I’m sorry, but I have to go to school earlier today.  I don’t think I can eat my breakfast.”

Grandma looked strict and disappointed.  “What do you mean you can’t eat your breakfast this morning?  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and without it, you’ll be hungry all morning until lunch time and you’ll be falling asleep in class.”

“I’m so sorry,” Melanie said hastily.  “But…right now, there’s no time for it.”

Grandma hesitated.  It looked important for Melanie to go to school early today.  “Your lunch is ready, but if you can wait another 5 minutes, I’ll pack up your breakfast for you so you can take it with you.  I hope that is acceptable.”

Melanie smiled brightly.  “Oh, yes, please!  Thank you so much, Grandma!”

“Now go ahead and do whatever else you need to do to get ready to go.”

“Thank you,” Melanie said to her sweetly and with a bright smile.  She hurried to the living room and she checked in her schoolbag if she had everything already.  She went up the stairs when she realized she didn’t have her paper pad, which she used to write songs in.  She quickly went to get it and then went downstairs to put it in her bag.

As Melanie was putting on her shoes, Grandma walked out of the kitchen and approached her.  She had Melanie’s regular lunch bag and another lunch bag that contained her breakfast.

“Here you go, Melanie.  Make sure you eat it before class begins,” said Grandma, without a smile.  The expression on her face was totally serious and still looked very strict.

Melanie took the two lunch bags.  “Thank you, Grandma.  Please have a good day.  I’m going now,” she said to her and then opened the door.

Melanie took her schoolbag as well and quickly walked outside.  When she reached the sidewalk, the front door of the house closed but Melanie waved anyway.  She started walking towards her school, and she walked a little more quickly than usual.

A car stopped in front of the school and Hazel came out of the car.  Her mother Isabelle was the one driving the car.  Her brother Lawrence was sitting in the back seat.

“Hazel, you have a good day now.  And, you, too, Lawrence, you have a good day, too,” said Isabelle.

“Thanks, Mom,” said Hazel, as she carried her schoolbag on her back.  She gestured Lawrence to come out of the car.  “Come on, Lawrence.  Let’s get you to your class now.  We’re here at school.”

After a few seconds, Lawrence began to move towards the door and he came out of the car.  He constantly looked around to see what was going on around him.  Hazel put her arm around him as she took his schoolbag.

Isabelle smiled at the two of them.  “Take care, you, too.  See you after school,” she said to them.

“See you later, Mom,” said Hazel.  She closed the car door and Isabelle began to drive away.

“Come on, Lawrence.  Let’s go around the back,” she said softly.  She led Lawrence towards the walkway that led to the school park behind the school.  She had to do this physically at first, and after a few seconds, he followed her without being led by the arm.

Hazel looked up to see if Melanie was there and could not find her anywhere.  She had hoped that she would be here early, just like she asked her yesterday.

“I guess Melanie isn’t here yet,” she said.  “That’s okay.  Come on, Lawrence.”  She continued to lead him towards the school park, from which she could reach the back entrance that is much closer to the classroom that Lawrence went to.

Melanie walked quickly towards the school.  She was probably about 5 minutes away from it when she saw a car that looked familiar.  The car went by and she saw the person who was inside.  It was Isabelle Callaway, Hazel’s mother.  She had just come from the direction of the school.

“Oh, no, Hazel’s already at school.  I’m late!” she said and she began to walk even faster.  Then she started to run, but she could not run too fast because of the luggage she was carrying, her schoolbag and two lunch bags.

After a few minutes, she reached the school and she stopped at the bottom of the stairs that led up to the front entrance.  She was panting and trying to catch her breath as she leaned on the railing.

“Hazel’s not here.  She’s…probably inside already with her brother.  I have to…go find her…” she said, still trying to catch her breath.  After she was able to do that, she went to the little walkway that led to the school park.

She walked at her normal pace as she looked around, trying to look for Hazel.  There were a few students out in the school park and closer to the building itself, but not very many since it was still a little early.  She saw the back entrance that she used to go to the school park when it was lunch period.  That was the entrance that Hazel would have taken if she was taking Lawrence to his specialized class.

As she walked towards the entrance, she noticed a small crowd of kids some distance away and she wondered what they were doing.  She looked more intently and she saw Hazel there.

“Hazel?” she said to herself.  She looked worried.  She started to walk towards the group of kids.  As she got closer to the small group, it was obvious that Hazel was being bothered by something.  Then she heard Lawrence’s name.

The children were laughing, except for Hazel.  Lawrence!  Lawrence!  You’re a retard!  You’re a retard!” chanted the children.

Melanie gasped.  The children who were standing around the frightened little boy Lawrence were all in the Grade 3 class.  There were a few older and younger children nearby, including those from Melanie’s class, who noticed what was happening and they all kept their distance but stuck around to watch what was happening.  They were not doing anything about it.

“What’s going on?” she said softly, and a couple of classmates were close to her when she said that.

It was Natasha.  “I don’t know why they’re doing it, but those little kids are making fun of Hazel’s little brother,” she said to Melanie.

      “What?  That’s awful!” said Melanie.

      “You can say that again.”

Melanie was rather shocked by that.  “Hazel!” she called out.

Hazel looked up and saw Melanie.  She looked very worried and also indecisive.  “Melanie, what am I supposed to do?  They’re making fun of my brother!” she said.

“You could tell them to shut up, you know,” said Natasha.

Hazel shook her head.  “No way!  They’re just little kids.  I can’t say that.  If they were my age or a little older like you guys, I would probably scream like a madwoman and bite your heads off, chew them up, and then spit them out into a burning furnace, but I can’t do that to them!  I just can’t!”

“Who cares?  They’re only a year or two younger.  They’re not that little,” said the girl named Martha, who was Melanie’s classmate.  “Besides, her brother really is a retard anyway.  Just look at him.”

“Don’t say things like that!” shouted Hazel, and there was a bit of anger when she shouted that.  She turned to the Grade 3 students, but when she faced them, her anger seemed to disappear.  “Will you please stop it?  Leave my brother alone!”

But they did not listen.  Hazel was very worried and frustrated at the same time.  She groaned with frustration.  Normally, she always knew what to do, including in situations similar to these, but when it came to her little brother, she was not sure what to do.

“Hazel’s always been like that,” said Natasha.

Melanie turned towards Natasha.  “What do you mean?” she asked.

“When it comes to other kids who are younger than she is, she’ll usually be quite gentle with them, almost to the point of giving in to them.  If they start acting in a bad way, she doesn’t know what to do.  But if she’s dealing with other kids who are our age, kids who are the same age as her, she is a lot more confident.  She is her loud and confident normal self.”

Lawrence was frightened and he was starting to scream like a baby.  There were no tears coming out of his eyes but he was definitely upset.  Melanie knew all too well how it was to be made fun of and she was feeling very bothered that this innocent little boy has to go through something so cruel just because he was autistic.

Melanie frowned at the kids, and she began to get a little angry at them.  She took a deep breath and came closer to the group of kids who were surrounding Lawrence.

“Please stop making fun of Lawrence!” Melanie shouted.

The Grade 3 students were startled as they looked around and saw Melanie standing above them.  Other students nearby also heard what she said and they were surprised.  Hazel seemed surprised, too.  She wondered what Melanie was going to do.

“Melanie…” Hazel whispered, surprised by Melanie’s actions.  It was something that she did not quite expect from someone like her, since it was obvious to her by now that Melanie was a very gentle person who did not easily give in to anger.

Melanie looked uncomfortable, drawing so much attention to her self, but she pushed away that insecurity and she went even closer to the students, who got out of her way.  Lawrence was on the ground and he looked like he was about to do more screaming, and he did.  Hazel and Melanie quickly went to him and knelt down before him.

Lawrence!  Are you okay?” said Hazel, with a worried look.

Melanie put a hand on Hazel’s arm and Hazel looked up at her.  Melanie went a little closer to him.  Lawrence, please look at me,” she said to him.  “Please look at me.  Please look.”

After a few seconds, Lawrence looked up at Melanie, who gently smiled at him.

“Are you okay, Lawrence?  The bad kids are gone now, so you’ll be safe.  They won’t make fun of you anymore.  Do you understand?” she said to him.

“He doesn’t understand anything.  He’s a retarded kid,” said one of the kids behind her, but she ignored him and kept on talking to Lawrence.

Lawrence.  Are you scared?” Melanie asked.

After a few more moments, Lawrence seemed to nod his head.

Melanie slowly went closer to him again and extended her hands towards him.  “I know how you feel, sweetheart.  I’ve been scared so many times.  It hurts!  But your sister is here and I’m here, too.  I’m your friend, right?”

Lawrence hesitated, then he placed his hands into Melanie’s hands as well, and Melanie held his hands very gently.

“That’s very good.  You’re a very good boy,” said Melanie.

Lawrence was trying his best to listen.  There were a couple of seconds when he seemed to stop listening because other things around him were taking his attention away, but he struggled and did his best to keep his attention on Melanie.

“I know how it feels like to be scared.  I get scared a lot, too.  But I have to try my best to be brave anyway, because if I don’t, things might get worse.  That’s what you have to do, too.  You have to be brave and you have to face everything.  It’s okay to be scared, but please don’t hide.  Be brave.  Sometimes…sometimes I hide, too.  Actually, I hide a lot when I’m scared of something.  But I learned recently that if I keep doing that, things might get even worse for me.  We both have to be brave, isn’t that right?”

The other students behind her were looking on, trying to understand what was happening.  The younger students who were making fun of Lawrence were still standing there, not really knowing what to say or what to do next.

“Does Lawrence like music?” asked Melanie.

Hazel nodded.  “Yes, he does.  He seems to like a little bit of pop music whenever I play it in my room.”

Melanie smiled brightly.  “Oh, that’s good, because I like pop music, too, Lawrence.  That’s my favorite kind of music, you know.  And you know what, I’m going to tell you something that I rarely tell people,” she said to him.

He looked around a few times and then looked at her.  Her gentleness kept his attention mysteriously.  He could not focus on anything else.  He looked like he was wondering what Melanie was going to say to him next.

“What?” he whispered very, very softly, but it was hard for him to even say that one word.

Melanie was glad that he did.  “I’m a singer.  I like to sing.”  Hazel looked at her, wondering what she was planning.  So did the other children around them, who gathered a little closer, even the Grade 3 students who were making fun of him.

      “Melanie?” Hazel asked.

Lawrence.  Do you want me to sing for you?  Will that make you feel better?” she asked.  After a few seconds, Lawrence nodded his head a little.  Hazel smiled at Melanie because of that.  “Okay, Lawrence.  I’ll sing for you, if that will make you feel better.”

Melanie closed her eyes at first as she got into the right mood, to express the right feelings and to get the perfect singing voice.  She began to sing to him…

My heart, oh, my heart, I feel like it’s been broken

Shattered pieces blown away, forgotten and forsaken

Carried away by the cold wind of the winter storm

That took my life away, too much pain to form

I feel like the whole world has crashed around me

I want to hide away, to a place where I can be free

But it might be nothing more than a cruel illusion

The cold world’s chill has broken my concentration

If only there was a way to pick up the pieces and move on

If only there was a way to dream again and carry on

Why does my heart continue to dream despite it all?

The starry love dream, I hope would give me a call

Why do I still dream when my heart has been broken?

Will my dreams be nothing but a memory forgotten?

Please help me find another way to realize my dream

Push away the cold currents of the torrential stream

This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

So far away, even if you’re so far away from me

I‘ll never forget you, I’ll fulfill my promise, you see

I feel sad and I feel lonely, like I’m the only one here

But I know that you’re here, to chase away my fear

My heart is longing for you; I don’t want to be alone

We have to bear the pain, the sadness, the hurt, all alone

Oh, I want to keep dreaming, oh, I want to keep singing

Diamond dust flying in the sky, my broken heart is crying

There is a way to pick up the pieces and move on

There is a way to dream again and carry on

My heart needs to continue to dream despite it all

The starry love dream, I know it will give me a call

Why do I still dream when my heart has been broken?

Will my dreams be nothing but a memory forgotten?

Please help me find another way to realize my dream

Push away the cold currents of the torrential stream

This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

Melanie opened her eyes and looked up at Lawrence.  They were still holding hands.  Lawrence was looking straight into Melanie’s eyes, and his eyes looked a little misty.  But then he smiled at her.  Melanie let go of his hands and opened her arms to him and he put his arms around her.  Lawrence hugged Melanie for a very long time and Hazel looked down feeling very relieved as tears came down from her eyes.

“Thank you so much…Melanie,” Hazel whispered, as she tried to wipe her own tears away.

Hazel stayed there with the two of them for the next few minutes.  When Lawrence and Melanie let go of each other, Lawrence hugged his older sister as well and she was very happy because of that.  Then Lawrence tried to say something that was difficult to hear but they were able to understand.

      “Melanie…sings…good,” said the little boy.

Hazel laughed in total agreement.  “Oh, yes, she really does,” she said softly to him.  “I hope she’s going to take my advice and become a professional singer now instead of waiting to grow up.  Don’ you think that would be a great idea?”

Melanie was surprised by that.  “Hazel?” she said.  She sighed and looked down and started to giggle.

“That’s your song ‘My Heart’, right?” Hazel asked.

      Melanie nodded.  “Yeah, that’s right.”

“It’s so beautiful.  It’s slow and dramatic and emotional.  It would be a slow pop ballad.  It touches my heart and I think it touched Lawrence’s heart, too.”

Melanie hesitated and she smiled.  Her song has affected the two of them in such a way that she wanted it to affect other people.  She wanted it to touch their hearts.  “Thank you, Hazel.  Thank you so very much,” she said softly.

Natasha went over to the Grade 3 kids.  “Now, you little children, that serves you right for making fun of a helpless little boy who can’t defend himself,” she scolded them with a frown on her face.

The Grade 3 kids all looked up at Natasha with faces that looked worried.  Since Natasha was significantly taller than they were, they felt that they had to pay attention to what she was saying, because if they didn’t, there might be punishment.

“Don’t make fun of kids who are smaller than you.  That just makes you look like bad people.  Do you understand?”

“Um…yeah…” said one of the Grade 3 kids.

Melanie and Hazel watched what Natasha was doing, a little bit surprised.

“Good.  You better understand if you know what’s good for you.  Now get out of here!” Natasha said to them loudly and the Grade 3 kids hesitated and then started running away.  But not before looking at Melanie one more time.  They held the look of surprise and awe on their faces, most likely from the song that she had just sung for Lawrence.

Natasha began to walk away as well.  She passed by Martha.

“That was a pretty good song,” said Martha.  “I wonder who wrote it.”

Natasha stopped and looked at Martha and smiled.  “Yeah, it was pretty good.  Who knew that someone like her could sing so well?” she said, and continued walking away.  Martha started walking away as well.  But Melanie, Hazel, and Lawrence did not hear a word that they said because they were too far away and spoke too softly.

Natasha reached one of the entrances to the school and her friend Kelsey was standing there.  When Natasha looked up at Kelsey, she seemed to have a preoccupied look on her face.

“Hey, Kelsey, are you okay?” asked Natasha.

Kelsey was still out of it for a few seconds, and then she looked at Natasha.  “Oh, yeah, I’m fine,” she said.

“What’s wrong?”  Natasha glanced towards Melanie and Hazel and her little brother again.  “You looked like you were preoccupied by something.”

Kelsey hesitated, and she was slightly startled, too.  She took a deep breath and she smiled and shook her head.  “Oh, no, it’s nothing.  Nothing’s wrong, Natasha.”

      “Are you sure?”

      “Yes, I’m sure,” said Kelsey.

Natasha shrugged.  “Okay, well, suit yourself, then.”  With that, Natasha went through the entrance.

But Kelsey stayed behind, staring at Melanie for a long time, as if she was wondering about something.  She had heard the song that Melanie was singing to Lawrence and she tried to remember the words as best she could.  She was able to remember most of them, too, even though she just heard the song once.

“That Melanie…she seems like a really good singer…she has an angel’s voice,” Kelsey whispered.

All the other children near Melanie, Hazel, and Lawrence began to disperse after Natasha and Martha left them.  They had heard Melanie’s singing for the first time and Melanie wondered what they were thinking and feeling as she looked around her.

“That’s the first time,” said Melanie.

Hazel and Lawrence looked up at her.  “First time for what?” she asked.

Melanie sighed.  “The first time anyone here heard me sing.  Most of my friends in Ottawa heard me sing before, but not anyone here.  I wonder…I wonder what they’re thinking.  And I wonder what they’re feeling, too.”

“You’re worried about that?  About what other people think?”

      Melanie nodded her head.  “Yeah…”

Hazel sighed softly.  “You shouldn’t have to care what other people think.  If they think bad things about you, you should just ignore them and let them stew in their bad feelings.  It’s not worth stressing over, if they’re going to be negatively thinking about you.”

“I didn’t mean it that way,” said Melanie.

Hazel was puzzled.  “Huh?  Then, what do you mean?” she asked.

“I meant…I want to know if I was able to touch their hearts….because that’s what I want to do with my songs.  When I become a singer, I want to touch people’s hearts and spread love to the whole world, to everyone around me.”

“Oh, I get it,” Hazel said and she smiled and giggled.  “That’s so sweet of you.  Your song did touch my heart and my little brother’s heart.  It’s wonderful.  It makes me feel like crying.”

Melanie started to giggle.  “Hazel, you did cry.”

Hazel giggled, too.  She looked up at the other students who were nearby earlier.  ”I think they liked your song.  I didn’t hear anyone complaining.”

      “You think so?” asked Melanie.

“I think so,” said Hazel.  She stood up and helped Lawrence stand up as well.  Melanie did the same thing.  They both got their schoolbags and lunch bags from the ground and Hazel picked up the schoolbag that belonged to her brother.

Melanie checked her watch.  “I think we better get to class soon.”

“I’ll do that.  You go ahead to our class, Melanie, and I’ll take Lawrence to his class.  Is that okay with you?” asked Hazel.

“You don’t want me to come with you?  Will you be okay?”

Hazel nodded and smiled at her.  “Yeah, I’ll be fine.  Besides, after that song, I don’t think anyone’s going to make fun of Lawrence anymore.  They would feel too ashamed to even try something like that.  You go on ahead.  I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

Melanie smiled as well.  “Okay!  I’ll see you in class then.”

“Thanks!” said Hazel.  “Come on, Lawrence.  Let’s get you to your class.”  She began to lead her little brother towards the back entrance of the school.  Lawrence followed her without hesitation as she was headed for the class that he was supposed to attend.

And Melanie watched them and felt very good.  She put a hand on her heart and sighed.

“I think…you’ll be okay, Lawrence,” she said very softly.

There was a little girl who was watching the whole scene as well but Melanie and Hazel did not notice her.  She was the tiny little Grade 1 student who had fallen several days ago and Melanie tried to help her, but her older brother came and said mean things about Melanie.  Her brother had told her never to be anywhere near Melanie because he said that her family was trouble.

But she heard Melanie sing just now and she thought it was very nice.  She began to question what her brother was saying about Melanie.  She had been watching Melanie sing to that little boy who was in the same grade as she was but in a different kind of class.  She was in awe.  In fact, she was speechless.  She did not know what to think.

But after watching that emotionally dramatic scene, she smiled and thought that Melanie might be a good person after all.

      “Rachel,” someone called out.

The little girl turned around and saw her big brother coming towards her.  “Hi, Jeffrey,” she said calmly, but with a small smile on her face.

Jeffrey stood near his little sister Rachel.  “What are you doing here?  You can go into class now, right?” he asked.

“I was just watching something…” she said, smiling to herself as she looked down.

Jeffrey was puzzled.  “What do you mean?  What were you watching?”

Rachel hesitated before she said anything.  She sighed and she turned towards Melanie, Lawrence, and Lawrence’s older sister, as they were headed towards one of the entrances to the school.  “I was watching them.”  She pointed at them.

Jeffrey looked up at the people that Rachel was watching.  His focus went immediately on Melanie, the little girl who was the daughter of the Premiere of Ontario.  The calm look on his face gave way to a slight frown, and he glanced down at Rachel.

“Why are you looking at her?” he asked, in a slightly strict way.

Rachel looked up at her brother, slightly startled.  “I’m not sure.  She seemed really nice when she was singing to Lawrence.”

“Nice?”  Jeffrey sighed, closed his eyes, and shook his head.  “Because she was singing to that boy over there, you think that she’s nice?  Just because someone knows how to sing to someone doesn’t mean that they’re nice.  Did you think about that?”

Rachel was puzzled by that.  “No…” she said softly.

“Now, come on.  I’ll take you to your class.  Come,” he said to her.

Rachel put her hand in Jeffrey’s and both of them began to walk away, towards one of the entrances into the school.

Grandma Annabelle had gone to the grocery store, which was located in the plaza that was at the nearest major intersection.  The grocery store was part of that plaza.  There were many other stores there as well, including a convenience store.  There was also a public library.

Grandma had a basket full of groceries as she proceeded to the checkout counter.  She had bought eggs, bread, milk, juice, chicken breast, tomatoes, and potatoes.  At the counter, the cashier began to total up the price of the items that Grandma was buying.

“That’ll be $34.69, please,” said the cashier with a pleasant tone of voice.

Grandma gave her two $40 bills.  The cashier had already placed the items in 2 plastic bags.  She took the money and gave back the change.

“Thank you very much.  Please have a good day,” she said.

“Thank you,” said Grandma.  She took the plastic bags and she began to walk quickly towards the exit of the grocery store.

When Grandma passed by the parking lot, she saw a man who was perhaps slightly younger than she was.  He was putting some plastic bags into the trunk of his car.  They were grocery bags.  He had just done his grocery shopping.

When the man turned around, he was face-to-face with Grandma Annabelle, and he stopped.

Grandma looked serious and emotionless.  She just nodded to him.  “Mr. Wilkins,” she said as a greeting.  With that, she continued to walk away.

The man looked at her as she walked away.  “Humph…” was the only thing that he said.  He looked slightly annoyed as he closed the trunk of his car and headed for the driver’s seat.

Grandma Annabelle heard what he said.  She shook her head at that.

“Mr. Wilkins.  As always, he’s a mean-spirited old man.”

Melanie and Hazel’s narration:

Melanie: “Hello!  You know what, sometimes funny things happen and I’m really glad that they do, I mean, really glad.”

Hazel: “What do you mean, Melanie?”

Melanie: “Well, I mean, it’s just that my story has so much drama in it that it can make a person cry and so I’m glad that you’re a little bit of a joker at times.  I guess that’s comic relief for you.  You’re doing a very good job.”

Hazel: “Oh, okay!  I get it!  I think…”

Melanie: “Hey, wait a second.  There’s this elderly man that lives close to my house, just a few houses away across the street.  And you know what?  He seems really scary!  I might try talking to him one of these days, but I’m a little scared.  He kind of reminds me of my Grandma Annabelle in a bad mood.  I wonder if older people are always like that.”

Hazel: “Really?  You should probably stay away from him.”

Melanie: “I guess I could…but you know what, I think he’s hiding a secret about him.  Or rather, what he used to be?”

Hazel: “A secret?  What kind of secret?”

Melanie: “Well, I can’t tell you now.  But you can probably guess.  I’m just wondering though, how in the world could a secret like that be true though?”

Hazel: “Stranger things have happened.”

Melanie: “That’s true.  And this one is pretty strange.”

Hazel: “Maybe there’s a mystery involved in it.”

Melanie and Hazel: “Next time on Starry Love Dream!  Episode 5: That mean old man, a songwriter?
