Melanie’s narration:

Melanie: “Welcome to Starry Love Dream!  Let’s go on a journey together!  Here we go!”

Opening theme song

“Starry Love Dream” by Starry~en~Luv

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

A dream can’t just stay a dream in my mind

It would just be a waste and I would be in a bind

No matter where and how far you have to go

You’ve got to chase your dream so much so

Never ever lose sight of the love, of the dream

Let your dream flow like the never-ending stream

I know things are tough and it’s easy to get sad

But as long as we’re together, even if things go bad

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dreamy love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

Hold my hand tight and always stay by my side

Let’s hold onto the dream as we go along the ride

Stay with me, my love, and don’t try to look back

If we lose our way, we’ll always try get back on track

There are so many obstacles to fight your way through

But as long as you believe, your dream will come true

Oh, my love, even if things don’t always go right

We have our love, our dream, never lose our sight

I want to sing like a lovebird and touch your heart (touch my heart)

Please stay with me and stay close to my heart (close to my heart)

Starry love dream!

I wanna be your happy dreamy love

I wanna spread my wings like a dove

Fly with me all the way to the starry night

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light

I wanna be your happy dreamy love (happy dream love)

I wanna spread my wings like a dove (wings like a dove)

Fly with me all the way to the starry night (to the starry night)

Fly to the sky and bask in the starry light (in the starry light)

Starry love dream

(Happy dreamy love, wings like a dove)

(To the starry night, in the starry light)

Starry love dream, I love you!

The Prologue

The sounds of people cheering filled the air and the sky was filled with twinkling stars, little tiny stars that floated upwards from a stage, some kind of lovely special effect.  On the stage were a few young people, maybe in their teenage years, playing different musical instruments, such as guitars and keyboards.  Different-colored laser beams shot up into the sky in different directions.  On a large screen above the stage was the face of a famous pop singer.

A little girl was singing on the stage and dancing at the same time, the ribbons of her costume flying around her.  Her costume sparkled like diamond dust as she danced and sang, holding a microphone in her hand.  Her costume was pure white and one side of her skirt was much longer than the other.  She wore a brightly jeweled necklace around her neck and there was a golden and diamond tiara on her head.  She sparkled like the stars as she sang like a beautiful angel.

As she finished her song, people cheered and applauded loudly.  The little girl curtsied adorably and she smiled at everyone who loved her music.

“Thank you so much!  I’m so happy that you came to my concert tonight!  I want to keep on singing and continue to touch the hearts of everyone in the whole world!  Thank you so much!  I love all of you!” said the little girl to her audience.

Someone tapped her on the shoulder once, but she did not respond at first as she waved to her fans out in the audience.  The person tapped her shoulder again, this time, much harder and the little girl was puzzled.  She turned around to see who it was that was behind her.

It was a woman but her face could not be seen because of the stage lights that were behind her.  “Melanie!  It’s time to wake up!  You have to get ready for school!”

“Huh?” was the last thing the little girl said as the image of the woman in front of her became clear in her mind…

“Melanie!” said her maid.

Melanie blinked once and then twice.  “Huh?”

“You’re going to be late for school!”

Melanie looked to the side at her alarm clock.  On the clock, it was 8:30 am!  She very suddenly realized where she really was and what day today was as well.

“Oh, no, I’m going to be late!” cried Melanie

Starry Love Dream

Episode 1: I’m going to a new home, but it scares me…

Melanie quickly took a shower.  It was too cold and she felt like she was going to freeze to death.  She also brushed her teeth quickly and fixed up her long brown hair as quickly as she could.  She got dressed into her school uniform, which was a blue and black plaid skirt, a white blouse, and a navy blue cardigan, and then she sprayed a little too much perfume all over her body.  She grabbed her schoolbag and rushed out of her bedroom.  She ran down the stairs like a speeding train and she was about to pass by the kitchen, where her maid Sylvia Branford was waiting.

“Oh, no, I’m going to be so late for school!  Is Mr. Peters ready to take me there?” she frantically asked, as she grabbed her lunch bag from the table.  Sylvia was as calm and as cheerful as usual as she told Melanie her answer.

“Mr. Peters has been waiting outside for you in his car for a while.”

“Thank you!  Oh, and see you later, Sylvia!” shouted Melanie as she burst out of her massive suburban house that looked like a mansion.

“Have a good day at school, Melanie,” said Sylvia.

Melanie saw the luxury car waiting for her at the front of the house and she ran towards it.  Mr. Peters, her chauffeur, was waiting for her at the car and he was looking at his watch.

      “Mr. Peters, I’m coming!”

Mr. Peters seemed rather calm and cheerful as well.  “Ah, Miss Melanie, so you are headed for school after all.  I would be very happy to give you a ride.”

“Thank you so much, Mr. Peters!” Melanie shouted as she jumped into the back seat of the car and Mr. Peters closed the door for her.  When Mr. Peters was ready, he began to drive away towards the private school that Melanie attended.

“My name is Melanie Thompson.  I’m 9 years old and I attend Grade 4.  I love singing and songwriting.  My dream is to someday become a beautiful pop singer so that I could touch the hearts of all the people I love.  I have a journey that I must take.  It’s a journey to make my dream come true.  Won’t you please take this journey with me?”

In the car, Melanie thought about that dream that she had.  It was such a good dream, too, but she had to wake up.  Maybe it might have been better to sleep in.  She wished today was Sunday so that she could continue that lovely dream.  She liked the dream very much and wished that someday, perhaps someday, it would become real.

As they drove through the city of Ottawa, which was located in Ontario, Canada, they passed by the Royal Conservatory of Music.  That was the place where Melanie was being taught singing lessons, and she’s been part of that music school for the last 5 years, ever since she was 4 years old.  But even before that time, Melanie wanted to become a singer.  And for the past 5 years, she has tried to work on that goal by receiving vocal lessons.

Up ahead was the prestigious Apple Hills Private School, which was the school that Melanie attended.  Classes were to start at 9:00 am at this school.  Mr. Peters parked the car in front of the school and then opened the car door for Melanie, who stepped out of the car.

“Thank you so much, Mr. Peters.  I really thought I was going to be late for school.  I still have 5 minutes before class,” she said to him.

“It was no problem at all, Miss Melanie.  You’ve never been late for school before, so I didn’t think there would be any problems.”

Melanie smiled at him.  “You’re right.  I better go now.  Five minutes can run out quickly if I don’t get moving, right?”

“Of course, miss.  You have a good day at school,” he said to her with a smile.

“You have a good day, too!  Thank you,” said Melanie.  She began to walk quickly up the steps in front of her school and she went inside.  Once she was inside, Mr. Peters got back inside his car and began to drive away.

Melanie got to her class just on-time and everyone was there already, but the teacher wasn’t there yet.  She had been walking very quickly and she felt exhausted.

“Hi, Melanie!” said one of the girls in the classroom.  Melanie smiled and she walked into the class and sat beside the girl.

Melanie sighed.  “Oh, my, I’m so glad that I’m not late.  I’ve never been late before, so I wouldn’t ever want that to happen,” she said softly.

“Did you oversleep this morning?” asked the girl.  This was one of Melanie’s best friends and her name was Janice Love.  She was the same age as Melanie.

“Just a little, Janice.  I was having this really beautiful dream.  I wish it was the weekend so that I could continue that dream.  Hey, maybe tonight, when I go to sleep, I’ll continue it.  Wouldn’t that be so totally nice?” said Melanie as she began to giggle with Janice.

      “Is it about that?’

Melanie knew what she was saying.  Janice knew about Melanie’s dream to become a singer someday.  “Yes.  Yes, it is about that,” she said with a bright smile.

Another girl came into the classroom and she was panting.  She must have been running all the way to the classroom.  She sat down on the seat that was on the other side of Melanie and she sighed.

“What a long run!  I didn’t realize that the hallway was that long before!” said the girl.  Melanie and Janice began to giggle at that.  Her name was Jenna Hisakawa, a Japanese girl who was born in Canada.  She turned towards them.  “Hey, don’t laugh.  I was having a nice dream this morning and I didn’t really want to wake up.”

Janice began to laugh.  “That’s what Melanie was having, too,” she said.

“Really?  Is it about her singing career?” Jenna said cheerfully.

Melanie blushed.  “Oh, please don’t say it like that.  I don’t have a career yet.  It’s still so far away.  I’m…still too young to be a singer.”

“Too young?  Some kids have already published books at our age.  And some kids are actors and actresses on TV, and some of them are a lot younger than we are now.  Some of those kids are still babies and they’re already actors and actresses starring on commercials.  And I know there are a few kids who are singers,” said Janice.

“Yeah,” said Jenna.  “There’s no reason why shouldn’t be a singer.”

“That’s right.  I heard about this girl from Cyprus, one of the countries in the Mediterranean and she’s a really good singer.  Well, that’s what my big sister said.  She started singing when she was maybe about 7 years old and she sold a lot of CD’s.”

“That’s pretty cool, don’t you think?”

Melanie smiled.  “Maybe.  I hope you’re right.”

“Of course, I’m right,” said Jenna, and she gave a wink.

That’s when the teacher came in.  Their Grade 4 teacher was Tina Leone.  “Good morning, everyone!” said the teacher with a cheerful tone.

“Good morning, Miss Leone,” said everyone in the entire class.

“I’m sorry that I was late.  I was having a good dream this morning.  I really wish it was Sunday right now so I could sleep in.”  Melanie, Jenna, and Janice all looked at each other and they began to laugh.  “Hey, what’s so funny over there?”

“Oh, nothing,” said Janice, with an innocent smile.

“Well, okay.”  Miss Leone looked at Melanie and smiled.  “Melanie.  I’m really looking forward to the Ontario election that’s coming soon.  Your father has been campaigning really well and has made very good promises for the people of the province and I’m definitely going to vote for him this year.  Could you please tell him that when you get home and see your father tonight?”

Melanie was suddenly surprised.  After a moment, she looked down and she stared at the top of her desk for a while.  Miss Leone was puzzled.  Janice and Jenna were also surprised by what Miss Leone had told Melanie just now.  They both looked at her and saw that she was bothered by it.

      “Melanie?”

Melanie looked up and she sighed and she forced herself to smile.  “Thank you, Miss Leone.  I’ll be sure to tell him that when I see him tonight,” she whispered.

Miss Leone smiled at her.  “Thank you, Melanie.”  She gathered some notes from her desk and she looked up at her students who were waiting for the class to begin.  “It looks like everyone’s here.  Let’s begin the class.”

Janice and Jenna looked at Melanie with concern.  They knew exactly why she felt down all of a sudden.

Janice and Jenna were sitting on the swings in the playground at the back of their school.  Melanie was sitting down on a bench.  It was very quiet for a very long time.  Normally, they would be talking a lot about many things, but the mood was not quite right.  It was a long time before the dead silence between the three of them was broken.

“I wish your father was not a politician,” said Jenna.

Melanie looked up at her friends.  There was more silence between the three of them for a while.  When she looked up at Jenna and Janice, they had a lot of sadness in their eyes.  She felt a lot of sadness, too.  They all felt each other’s sadness, for their friendship was extremely close.  It was so close that they could feel each other’s emotions.

“If my father becomes the Premiere of Ontario, if he wins the election, I have to move from here to Toronto.  It’s a long way to Toronto.  I would have to leave my school and I would have to leave my friends behind.  I don’t want to leave my friends behind,” said Melanie.

There was more silence between the three of them for a while.  Melanie looked down at her shoes and kicked some sand.

“Why did your dad have to become a politician anyway?” asked Janice.

“I don’t know.  But…I think, one time, he said it was his dream to do something like that,” said Melanie, who looked down and was sad.

“You could be a politician.  But you don’t have to run for Premiere, you know.”

      “That’s true, too,” said Melanie.  “But…I think…”

Jenna and Janice looked up at Melanie when she didn’t finish what she was going to say.  “What is it, Melanie?”

“I think that’s what my Papa wanted to do.  He said to me one time that it was his dream to serve the people of Ontario and be their leader into a bright and better future.  That’s what he said to me one time.  And that’s what he’s saying in all of his promises to the people, too.”

There was silence for a while.  It was her father’s dream?

      “Oh, I see…” said Janice.

“Your father wants to fulfill his dreams,” said Jenna.  “You want to fulfill your dreams.  I guess…that’s what everyone has to do.  That’s what everyone should do.  If it’s your father’s dream to lead everyone into a better future, then that’s what he has to do, right?”

Melanie nodded to that.  “That’s right…”

“So what are you going to do, Melanie?” asked Janice.

Melanie looked up and her eyes were a little damp.  “I don’t know what to do.  It’s my father.  It’s my father’s dream.  I want him to be happy.  But…it would mean that I have to leave you behind!”

Jenna and Janice stared at Melanie with sad faces.

“I don’t want to go.  But if he wins, that means I have to.”  Tears began to stream down Melanie’s little face.  “You two, you’re my best friends.  I don’t want to leave you behind…I love you both too much to leave you behind.”

Jenna and Janice stood up from the swing and they sat at either side of Melanie quickly and held her in their arms.  Melanie began to cry and Jenna and Janice were starting to cry as well.

“I’ll do my best to serve all of you, my fellow citizens,” said Mark Thompson, who was running for the position of Premiere of Ontario.  He stood in front of a podium as he addressed a crowd that held signs showing their full support for Mr. Thompson.

“I’m a citizen of Ontario myself, just like every single one of you.  I know how it is to pay taxes and to pay bills. I know how it is to go to a school that has not been taken care of properly.  I know how it is when I have to go to a clinic and find out that I have to wait 6 hours to get medical attention.  I know how it feels, and I’m definitely going to do my very best to give Ontario a better and brighter future.  It has always been my dream to lead the people of Ontario to a future that is much better, a future that our children can look forward to.  I hope that in this coming election, you will vote for the future of Ontario!”

People began to cheer and some of them began to chant “Mark Thompson for Ontario Premiere!”  Mark waved at all of his supporters.  His speech was broadcasted throughout the many millions of households that were in the province of Ontario, in the city of Toronto, in the city of Ottawa, and in the many cities and towns that were in between and beyond.

When the speech was over, his wife, Sarah Thompson stood beside him and gave him a hug and a kiss.

“It’s all over now for all your competitors, Mark.  I just know that you have already won the election,” Sarah told him.

“We can’t celebrate yet.  But when that time comes, I’m going to treat you to candlelight dinner,” said Mark who smiled and Sarah held his hand.

“You’re still a darling romantic at your age,” she said to him.

“Oh, come on.  I’m not that old,” Mark said with a smile, and Sarah smiled with him.

Melanie watched the same speech on television one night.  She learned very quickly from the news reports that her father had the favor of a very large majority of the Ontario population.  On the evening news, it seemed as if her father had already won, but the election had not started yet.  When it comes time to vote, she felt that her fears would be realized.

“Melanie?” said Sylvia as she appeared at the entrance into the living room.

Melanie slowly looked up and saw her there.  “Sylvia…” she said softly.

“Are you okay?” she said, looking a little bit concerned.

Melanie sighed softly and she hesitated, and then she nodded her head and smiled slightly.  She didn’t really want to talk about anything with anyone at the moment.  “Yes, I’m fine, thank you, Sylvia,” she answered.

Sylvia smiled at her.  “That’s good.  Do you need anything?  Do you want some juice or maybe some hot chocolate?”

“Oh, no, I’m okay.  Thank you, Sylvia.”

“Okay.  Please let me know if you need anything.”

Melanie nodded.  “Thank you,” she said with a voice that was even softer.  Sylvia headed back to her other activities.  Melanie turned her attention back to the television.

She turned off the television and hugged tightly the teddy bear that she had with her.  She closed her eyes.  A part of her wished that the election would not allow her father to win.  But that would be selfish of her.  It meant that her father’s dream would not be fulfilled, so she pushed that away as hard as she could.

“I’ll do anything to help make my Papa’s dream come true.  You have to make your dreams come true.  There’s no other way,” she whispered to herself.

The day of the election came, and many people were lining up at voting stations across the province.  People took their voting cards and chose the person that they wanted to lead the province of Ontario as the new Premiere.  When people finished those cards, they dropped them into ballot boxes.

When those ballot boxes were filled out, government workers began to tally up the votes that were on those cards.  They counted the number of people that voted for each candidate for Ontario Premiere.  Those numbers were then sent to City Hall in the city of Toronto.

Very soon, the results of the voting days would be added together, and the new leader of Ontario would be determined.

“My father.  Mark Thompson.  He is the new Premiere of Ontario,” said Melanie.  “That means…that means that my new home will be the city where Premiere Thompson will be working from.  I have to leave my friends.  I have to leave everything behind   It really breaks my heart…”

Melanie was visiting the Royal Conservatory of Music in Ottawa and she was standing at the door of the office of her vocal teacher, Angela Tran.  Miss Tran was an elderly lady who has taught many students in North and South Korea and Canada.  Her reputation among the educators of music in those countries was very good and well-known.

“Miss Tran, I’m so sorry, but I can no longer be a student here.  Mark Thompson, my father, is now the Premiere of Ontario.  I’m sure you know about that already because it’s all over the news.  Because he’s the new Premiere, and the Premiere’s office is in Toronto, we as a family have to move to Toronto.  I have to leave Ottawa.  I have to leave the music school and my school, too.  I have to leave all my friends and everybody that I love here.  But it hurts me very much that I have to go.  I don’t really want to go, but it’s something that I have to do and I don’t really have a choice.  I’m sorry, but I can no longer be your student being taught your wonderful singing lessons…”

Melanie put her head down and her eyes became misty.  It was hard to get those words out.  She had to speak directly from the heart but it was still very difficult for her because it made her feel so sad.  Angela Tran stood up from her chair and she began to walk towards her little student.

“Melanie.  You are the best student I’ve ever had.  I want you to know that.  I am sorry that you are leaving me, that you’re leaving us,” said Miss Tran.  “Please look up at me.”

Melanie tried her best to look up and when she did, a few tears came down from her eyes.  “You knew you were going to be sad.  You knew that this would happen.  And yet, you still supported your father.  Why is that, Melanie?”

“Because…because it is my father’s dream.  It’s his dream to lead the people of Ontario, and he did his best to fulfill his dream.”

“That’s what you must do, too, Melanie.  It may not happen now, but it can happen in the future.  You must believe in yourself.  That is what I want you to do.  He fulfilled his dream.  Now you must fulfill yours, even if you have to leave us at this music school.  I have taught you so much already.  I’m not sure if there is anything left to teach you.  You’re a great singer to me, Melanie.  I hope you’ll keep on singing and touch people’s hearts like you have touched mine.”

Melanie moved forward and embraced Miss Tran, who patted her on the head and smiled.

“Fulfill your dream, Melanie Thompson.”  Melanie nodded and she silently promised that she will do her best.  “By the way, I did not vote for your father.  But, I guess one vote is usually never enough to make a difference.  And I think you know why I didn’t vote for him.”

She did not vote for him because of the extremely remote chance that even one vote can make Mark Thompson would not win the election.  But since most people voted for him, it would not have done anything.  She wanted Melanie to stay.  That is what would have happened, if Mark Thompson had not won the election.  She would have stayed.

Melanie pulled away from Miss Tran and she smiled slightly.  “I’ll do my best, Miss Tran…” she whispered softly.

“You’re in my heart, Melanie,” said the vocal teacher.

Melanie hesitated for a long time, and then she started for the door.  When she got to the door, she turned back at Miss Tran one last time, and that’s when Miss Tran smiled at her.

“Be brave, my dear…” said Miss Tran.

Melanie smiled as well through her sad eyes.  “Goodbye…”

With that, Melanie exited through the door.  She walked down a long hallway that led her to the front lobby.  When she got there, she exited through the front door and her chauffeur Mr. Peters was waiting for her there.  She hesitated.  When she got to the sidewalk, she looked back at the music school, for this was the last time that she would see this school.

“I’ll do my best…” Melanie whispered, and then she turned towards Mr. Peters.

“Are we ready, Miss Melanie?” asked Mr. Peters.

Melanie hesitated, and then she nodded.  “Let’s go.”

Mr. Peters smiled and nodded as well as he opened the door into the car and Melanie went inside.     When Mr. Peters was inside the car, he started the engine, while Melanie in the back seat kept her gaze down at her hands which were clasped together on her lap.

The limousine began to drive away.

All of Melanie’s bags were packed and ready to go.  They were loaded into a limousine by Mr. Peters.  Her parents had already left for the city of Toronto and they had already arrived at that city yesterday by their private jet.  That same private jet had returned to Ottawa to pick up their daughter at the airport.

“Miss Melanie, it’s time,” said Mr. Peters.

Melanie was with Janice and Jenna.  They had come to her home to bid her farewell.  She looked up at them and ran into them and all three of them embraced each other with tears and sobs.

“We’re going to miss you, Melanie,” said Jenna.

“Melanie, don’t forget to write to us every once in a while,” said Janice.

Melanie pulled away from them and she nodded and she did her best to smile a little.  “I’m going to miss both of you two.  And I won’t forget to write letters to you.  I love you both so much.  You will always be my best friends, no matter how far away from each other we are.”

Jenna and Janice smiled at her through their tears.  “We love you, too, Melanie…” said Jenna.

“Hey, promise us something.  Promise us that you’ll fulfill that dream of yours.  Your dream to become a singer,” said Janice.

Melanie smiled, too.  “I promise.  I promise to become a singer someday.  And when that day comes, we’ll be together again, right?”

“That’s right,” they both said to her.

Melanie looked at them for a very long time and she wiped away the tears that were at hear eyes.  She sighed softly.  “I’ll do my very best.  My dream…is to become a pop singer.  I want to reach people’s hearts all over the world with my songs.  I want to convey my feelings through my music.  I’ll do my best to make my dream come true.”

Jenna smiled at her, wiping her own tears away.  “I can’t wait for that day, Melanie, when you do become a professional singer.”

“It’s going to be years from now, but that doesn’t matter,” said Janice.  “We’ll wait for you.  When that time comes, we’ll be together again.”

“That’s right,” said Jenna.  “We’ll be together again.”

Tears came down Melanie’s cheeks again and she looked at them with sadness.  “We’ll be together again…” she whispered.

One more embrace.  After that, Melanie went into the limousine and Mr. Peters got ready to drive away.  Melanie looked at her friends one more time and she waved at them from inside the limousine, and they waved back at her.  Then the limousine started to drive away, towards the airport.

Things were moving so quickly that Melanie hardly had any time to think.  She had moved into her new home in a very prestigious neighborhood in the middle of Toronto.  She had settled in physically and everything was in its place.  But her heart had not yet completely settled in yet.  She felt like a stranger in a strange city that was way too large for her.  Toronto had many more people than Ottawa did.  This very large city stretched for miles and miles and miles around her and contained millions of people.

She was also set up for a new private school.  The new school was called Haven Millers Academy, a very prestigious school that was located in an area called Thornhill, which was far away, but was still very much part of what was called the Greater Toronto Area.

Melanie woke up but she was not dreaming about herself singing on stage.  In fact, she did not even remember the dreams that she had last night.  She got ready for school day.  She took a shower, brushed her teeth, washed her hair, and did everything else that she needed to do, including having her breakfast.  She did not rush at all, since she had awakened much earlier than usual.  Her maid Sylvia, who moved with her family as well, cooked very good breakfast for her this morning.

She had been going to her new school for a week now.  Her school uniform was a plain navy blue jumper skirt and a white blouse.  She thought it was not as nice as the one that she wore in her previous school but she did not tell anyone that.

“How is the breakfast, Melanie?” asked Sylvia.

Melanie smiled at her.  “You’re such a good cook, Sylvia.  I hope I can cook like you someday.”

Sylvia was a little bit surprised and laughed.  “I thought you can already.  I taught you lots of things on how to cook.”

“I know.  But I’m sure that I’m still not as good as you are now.  I still have much to learn.”

Sylvia smiled at the little girl.  “You better hurry.  Mr. Peters is waiting for you outside to take you to your school.”

Melanie nodded.  “Yes, ma’am!” she said cheerfully and sweetly.

By the time she was finished, Melanie carried her schoolbag and her lunch bag and she exited the house through the front, where Mr. Peters was waiting for her.

“Miss Melanie.  Are we ready?” asked the chauffeur.

Melanie smiled at him.  “Good morning, Mr. Peters.  Yes, I’m ready now.”  She was led to the limousine and she went inside.  Mr. Peters went into the driver’s side of the vehicle and began to drive away towards Melanie’s school, Haven Millers Academy.

Melanie was in class and she listened intently to what the teacher was saying.  A week ago, on the first day of school, Melanie introduced herself to the new teacher cheerfully and with a warm smile, but Miss Langley just told her coldly to take a seat.  She wondered what that was all about.

Melanie was in the classroom that was still empty of students.  It was her first day in this new school and she was a little scared, but she tried to look as positive as she could.  The principal, Mr. Peter O’Reilly had told her to wait here until the teacher, Miss Katrina Langley, arrived.

A few students started to come into the classroom.  They noticed her while she was standing near the teacher’s desk.  Two or three of them looked at her and she tried to smile but they just looked away.  One of them was a girl with dark hair and a red ribbon tied into it.  That girl looked at her for a long time and then when Melanie looked at her, the girl looked away.  There was another girl with long, beautiful, blonde hair and when she looked at Melanie, who tried to smile, the girl just looked away as well.  There was also a very good-looking boy that looked at her once, and she tried to smile at him, but he just ignored her in a seemingly cold way.

Melanie noticed the teacher, Miss Langley, standing outside.  She was talking to the principal.  She guessed that they were talking about her as a new student.  Miss Langley didn’t look too excited.  When the principal left, Miss Langley went into the classroom.

“Good morning, class,” said the teacher.

“Good morning, Miss Langley,” said a few of the students.

Then, Miss Langley looked at Melanie for a while, but it was a strange look that lingered.  There appeared to be no expression on her face.  Melanie felt slightly uncomfortable, but she did her best to push that feeling away.

Melanie smiled cheerfully.  “Good morning, Miss Langley.  I’m your new student, Melanie Thompson,” she said, also cheerfully.

Miss Langley just stared at her for a few more seconds.  Melanie felt as if she had just done something wrong and was beginning to shrink from feeling embarrassed.  The other students looked at her, too, as if she had just done something strange.

“Please have a seat right over there, Melanie,” said the teacher, pointing at a vacant desk near the center of the classroom.  And then she proceeded to sit down at the teacher’s desk without giving Melanie a second look.

Melanie hesitated, but then she quickly went to her new desk.  Of course, it was empty because it was the first time she ever used it.  She sat quietly like a lady, her hands clasped together on her lap.  But she felt people’s eyes staring at her from every direction.  It was starting to become quite uncomfortable.

And the most uncomfortable part was that Miss Langley did not sound like she was going to make Melanie feel better.

A few days ago, Melanie volunteered to answer the questions that the teacher, Katrina Langley, threw at the Grade 4 class, but she never acknowledged her, even when she was the only one whose hand went up.  Miss Langley largely ignored Melanie.

Miss Langley was writing a math problem on the chalkboard.  It was Melanie’s second day in her new school and in this class.

“Okay, here’s a problem.  Who can tell me the answer to this one?” asked the teacher.

It was a particularly hard problem.  No one was raising their hand.

Miss Langley started to look slightly disappointed.  “Nobody wants to raise their hand?  So, nobody can answer this question?”

Melanie looked around.  Some of the students seemed to shrink further into their seats just in case Miss Langley started picking out volunteers.  The question was a difficult one and they did not know how they would answer it.

She looked behind her.  There was a boy who looked very calm and he was writing in his notes and looking up at the blackboard, but he seemed to have trouble answering the question, too.  She looked to left and saw a girl with long, blonde hair who was staring at the chalkboard and then looking at her math textbook.  She looked to the left and slightly behind and saw the girl who almost always had a red ribbon in her hair.  She looked at the chalkboard with a frustrated stare.

Melanie hesitated, and then she slowly raised her hand.  She did not raise her hand all the way.  Miss Langley looked at her and saw that she was volunteering to answer the question.

However, Miss Langley just sighed and erased the question.

“Oh, well, that’s alright.  I’ll try another problem.  This one did look kind of hard,” said the teacher.

Melanie was puzzled.  Miss Langley knew she wanted to answer the question but she did not acknowledge her.  She felt quite embarrassed and felt like sinking deeper into her chair so that no one would see her.

And the other students didn’t talk to her either.  But Melanie sensed that the reason why the students ignored her was totally different from the reason why her own teacher ignored her.

“Hey, Melanie,” said one of the boys.  Melanie turned towards that boy.  He whispered to her with a delighted smile.  “Congratulations to your dad for winning the election.  My mom and dad voted for him, you know.”

“Mr. Castro!” shouted the teacher, and the boy stiffened and stood at attention.

      “Yes, ma’am!” he said.

“I don’t want to hear any talk about the new so-called Premiere of Ontario!”

      “Yes, ma’am!  I’m sorry, ma’am!”

      “Now take a seat, please.”

“Yes, ma’am.”  The boy took a seat once again.  He dared not to look at Melanie again, for he might get into trouble.  Melanie wondered what that was all about.  It seemed that Miss Langley did not like her father, Premiere Mark Thompson.  Did she vote for someone else?  Was she angry because the person she voted for was not the one who won the election?

During lunch period, no one sat with her.  She ate her lunch by herself in a corner table in the cafeteria.  Some students passed her by.  Most of them might have just smiled, said hello, or just ignored her.  But there were a strange few who kept their distance as if she was an alien from another planet.  And there were also a few who seemed to be hostile towards her but not in words.  They would look at her like she was some kind of freak.  There was a cold atmosphere.

“What a strange school…” Melanie whispered, as she ate her food quietly.

“I think things were just starting to get better again for me after a little while.  I was just getting used to my new school and my new home and the city I lived in.  But pretty soon, things would get just as bad before.  Oh, actually…things started to get even worse than before.  One month after I started school, my life would dramatically change once again…”

Premiere Thompson stood in his office, looking at the distant Lake Ontario.  He looked very calm but also very upset at the same time.  There were men in dark suits behind him.  Some of them were part of his new government and some of another kind.  They were lawyers.

“How is something like this happening?  After only one and a half months of being the Premiere of Ontario.  How is something like this happening?”

On several city newspapers that were spread out across his large desk, there were very strange headlines on the front pages.

“New Premiere of Ontario: A Corrupted Man!”

      “Allegations of Corruption Against Premiere.”

      “Premiere Thompson Accused of Fraud”

“Why Is The Premiere So Rich?  Millions of Provincial Dollars Missing”

“Accusations of Fraud Against The New Premiere of Ontario

Some of the men behind him left the office.  Mr. Thompson looked once again at the hateful messages that were on the newspapers.  “How could something like this happen?”

One of the men in his office spoke out.  “Mr. Premiere, we will make sure that those who are making these false accusations eat their words.  These allegations, we all know that they are not true!”

Another one spoke in defense of Premiere Thompson.  “You have done very well to run for election and you did your best to win, too!  Whoever said that you cheated your way into winning this office is absurd!  We’ll make sure to conduct an investigation immediately.”

Premiere Thompson was quiet and looked down as he sat down on a couch.  His officials were not really sure what else to say to him.

“I wanted to lead this province into a better future.  And this is what happens?”

“Maybe it’s one of your competitors, Mr. Premiere,” said another politician.

“That is why we should conduct an investigation immediately,” said another.

Premiere Thompson looked up and stood up at them.  “Because of these…accusations against me that have no basis, we are all vulnerable to the lashings out of the press.  My daughter will also be vulnerable to their lashing out.  I have to make sure that she is protected.”

“That’s easier said than done,” said one politician.

“I suppose she could live with one of your wife’s relatives, sir,” said another.

Premiere Thompson sighed.  “Relatives, huh?  That old woman?”  He put his hand on his face and shook his head.  But he felt that there was no choice.  “Fine.  Call Sarah and have her contact me immediately.”

      “Yes, sir.”

Premiere Thompson stood up and he walked over to the window that had a beautiful view of the lakeshore area of the city of Toronto.  He took a deep breath and he shook his head.

“First, these false accusations start flying around, and now, I have to send my sweet and gentle little daughter away to my wife’s mother, who is probably the strictest woman on the face of the planet?  This is just…unbelievable.”

Reporters were frantically trying to get to Premiere Thompson, his wife Sarah, and their daughter Melanie, who carried a doll with her.  Questions were flying out all over the place.  Questions came from left, right, and center.  It was chaotic and Melanie tried to close her eyes to try to pretend that they were not there.  She was led by her parents into Mr. Peters’ limousine.  The parents went inside as well.

The reporters were asking so many questions!  Their voices were overlapping and it was impossible to make sense of what they were saying or asking.  Cameras were flashing as they took pictures of Premiere Thompson, his wife, and his daughter.  There were so many pictures being taken that it felt wrong somehow.  It was like a gross violation of privacy.

“No comment, except this.  All of these accusations against me are false!  It is my will to lead Ontario into a better future!  And that is my only intention!  Thank you!” Premiere Thompson cried out as he got inside the car.

The reporters tried to get him to open the window, but Mr. Peters stepped on the gas and the vehicle began to drive away.  Melanie was scared.  Sarah held her in her arms and she could tell that the little girl was scared to death.

“What is going on, Mama, Papa?  Why is this happening?” she asked.

Mark glanced down at Melanie and sighed.  “Some people will do anything to try to bring down your dream,” he said softly.

Sarah sighed as well and she held her daughter even harder.  “Melanie, things will be okay.  Don’t worry.  We’ll do our best to protect you in every way we can.”

“I wish we didn’t have to do this.  I didn’t trust that woman before and I certainly do not trust her now.  In fact, there is no way in hell that I’m going to trust in the future either,” said her father.

Sarah became upset suddenly.  “Mark, please don’t talk about my mother that way.  She is your mother-in-law, you know.”

“I know.  But she was the one that…”

Melanie looked up at her father and was wondering what he was about to say next.  She saw her mother’s hand on her father’s hand, stopping him from speaking.

“You have to let that go, my dear.  Whether you like it or not, she is a mother to you, too, because you are my husband.  I know it’s hard to let something like that go, but you have to try, my dear.  You have to try, because she’s my mother,” said Sarah, who looked down at Melanie, who looked frightened.  “Melanie, don’t worry, my darling.  You’ll be safe with my mother, who is your grandmother.  She will do her best to take care of you.”

“I’ve never met Grandma Annabelle,” said Melanie.  “Why do I have to live with her now?”

“I’m so sorry, Melanie.  But the reason why you have to live with my mother is because we need to protect you,” said Sarah.

“Protect me?  What do you mean?  I don’t understand.”

Mark held Melanie’s little hand.  “Melanie.  You must try to understand.  There are people in this world who will try to take your dream away from you.  And that’s what they are trying to do to me.  My dream was to make a better future for Ontario, but there are people who are trying to destroy that dream.  Because of that, I am getting unwanted attention from many people, including the press, those news reporters and writers and photographers.  And since you are my daughter, you will also get unwanted attention from there.”

“We want them to leave you alone,” said Sarah.  “This is something that your father and I must face ourselves and deal with.  We will correct the wrong that is happening here.  But we don’t want you to get hurt by any of it, so we have to ask that you live with my mother for a while, until things have settled down.  You must be protected.”

“You are so precious to us.  We do not want anything bad to happen to you.”

“That is how much we love you, my dear Melanie.”

Melanie began to cry and tears streamed down her cheeks.  “I don’t want to be far away from you, Mama, Papa!” she cried out as she put her head down on her mother’s lap and sobbed.  “My friends have been taken away.  Now my family’s being taken away, too…”

Mark and Sarah comforted her by holding her close to them.

“No, Melanie.  I won’t allow it,” said Mark.  “No one is going to tear this family apart.  No one!  I promise you that we will be together once again.”

“Papa…Mama…” Melanie whispered as she cried.

Mark and Sarah continued to hold her.

Eventually, their limousine reached a small house in the neighborhood of Thornhill, which was just beyond the city limits of Toronto.  Melanie looked at the house that they had stopped at.

Mr. Peters opened the doors for his passengers.  When Melanie stepped out of the car, she noticed that there was an elderly woman standing at the door of the small house.  Mark and Sarah were talking to that elderly woman for a minute, but the elderly woman just nodded at what they were saying.  She did not say anything at all.

Sarah smiled and motioned Melanie to come closer, and she complied.  She walked slowly and her face was slightly downcast because she felt very shy.  She stood at the bottom of the steps that led up to the front porch of the little house with her feet together and her hands clasped together in front of her.

“Melanie, I want you to meet my mother.  Grandma Annabelle.  Your grandmother,” said Sarah.

“You’re going to be living with her for a while,” said Mark.

Melanie looked up slowly and looked at her grandmother’s face.  She had a very stern-looking face, as if she was very serious and had not smiled in years.  She wore an old-fashioned skirt and blouse and she wore a white pendant that bore a small black and white picture of her when she was much younger.  Her arms were crossed against her chest.  Grandma Annabelle stared into Melanie’s eyes with a very serious look in her face.

Melanie was startled.  “Um…good morning, Grandma Annabelle.  I’m…so glad to finally meet you.”  Melanie held the sides of her skirt and she curtsied like a small lady.  When she looked up again at Grandma Annabelle, she noticed that there was no reaction.  Mark and Sarah waited.

Grandma Annabelle looked over Melanie’s head and shot a chilling look at Mr. Peters.

“Mr. Peters!” she said loudly.  Her voice was so full of authority and strictness that it made Melanie flinch.  She held her hands together even more tightly as she got even more nervous.

Mr. Peters was alarmed.  “Yes, Miss Hartford!”

“Please bring her belongings inside,” Grandma ordered.

      “Right away, miss,”

Mr. Peters brought all of Melanie’s belongings into her new room that was on the second floor of the house.  It was a small room, much smaller than the one that she had in her new house in downtown Toronto and even smaller than the one in her old house in Ottawa.  She looked around, holding her doll in front of her.  It was a very plain-looking room.  The only light was a lamp on the study table that was in the corner near the window.  The floor was not covered by a carpet.  The bed was a twin-size, much smaller than from what she was used to.  There was an empty bookshelf at another corner of the room.  The clothes closet was also empty.

Melanie walked down the stairs and Mark and Sarah were at the door.  She ran towards them and hugged them, while Grandma Annabelle looked on intensely.  She tried not to cry as she covered her eyes with her sleeves.

      “Mama, Papa…”

“Be strong, Melanie,” said her father.  “Grandma will take care of you.  She has agreed to help us protect you from the press, from the unwanted attention that they will give us.  In this house, you will always be protected.”

“We promise that we would visit as much as we can, Melanie,” said her mother.  “Let’s write letters to each other so that we can always keep in touch.  And you know our phone number at home so you can call us anytime, okay?”  Sarah’s eyes were starting to become misty as she embraced her daughter.

Mr. Peters was at the door.  “Sir, ma’am, we need to get to City Hall very soon,” he said.  Sarah and Mark pulled away and they were starting to leave, while Melanie looked on.

“Mama, Papa, please come back soon…” she whispered.  “And Papa?”

Mark looked back.  “What is it, Melanie?”

Melanie smiled through her misty eyes.  “Please fulfill your dream once again,” she said softly.

Mark smiled slightly and he nodded.  “I will do my best.  We love you, Melanie.”

“I love you, Mama, Papa…”  With that, both her mother and her father went inside the limousine and Mr. Peters began to drive away.  Melanie watched the car disappear around a corner and she put her hands on her heart.  She missed them already and she felt an ache in her heart.

      “Melanie.”

Melanie was startled and she turned around.

“Close the door.  Bugs will get inside the house,” Grandma ordered.

“Yes, Grandma.  I’m sorry,” said Melanie, as she closed the door.  She stood at the door and looked at her Grandma who began to walk towards the kitchen.

“Make sure you shower and change your clothes.  Please wash your hands as well.  I will not have you eating dinner with hands that have been touching your eyes, because I’m sure you have been crying all day,” said Grandma in a very strict tone.

Melanie was startled a little bit again.  “Oh, um…”  She looked around.

“Are you expecting a maid to help you?”

      “No, Grandma.  I don’t need a maid.”

“Then what are you standing there for?”

Melanie was feeling scared.  “I’ll do as you ask, Grandma…” she whispered and she began to go up the stairs.  She took a shower, but the bathroom was strange to her, because it was much smaller and not as luxurious.  She changed into an elaborate sundress with ribbons and flowery designs.  She also made sure that her hands were as clean as possible.

When she was done, she went downstairs and she went into the kitchen, which was not as nice as the one she was used to.  Grandma Annabelle sat down at the dinner table.  She had already put down Melanie’s dinner plate on the table.

“Come.  Sit down and eat,” said Grandma.

“Yes, Grandma,” Melanie whispered.  She sat down and began to eat her chicken noodle soup.  While she was eating, Grandma spoke once more.

“While you are in this house, there is no need for you to dress so elaborately.  A simple shirt and shorts would have been just fine.”

Melanie hesitated and then she nodded.  “Yes, Grandma.”

But that would be the last thing that Grandma would say to her for the rest of the dinner time.

Melanie went into her room and she sat down on the side of the bed.  She went to the window and looked outside.  It was very quiet.  There were many other houses but they were all rather small compared to the ones that she was used to.  An occasional car would pass by on the street in front of the house.  But other than that, it was very quiet.

Melanie closed her eyes and looked like she was in pain.

“Why are all these things happening?” she whispered to herself.  “It…scares me…I miss my friends.  I miss my song teacher.  I miss my Mama and Papa.  I feel like…I feel like everything is going to break any minute.  The whole world around me…”

She sat down on the chair at the study table and she took out some paper and a pen.  She began to think of something.  After thinking for a few minutes, she began to write something on the paper pad.  The very first thing that she wrote on top of the page was “My Heart”.

But she would not stop there.  She continued writing lines of text on the paper pad.  Every so often, she stopped to think or she stopped to read what she had written.  She began to hum to herself a song that was being created in her heart and her mind.

My heart, oh, my heart, I feel like it’s been broken

Shattered pieces blown away, forgotten and forsaken

Carried away by the cold wind of the winter storm

That took my life away, too much pain to form

I feel like the whole world has crashed around me

I want to hide away, to a place where I can be free

But it might be nothing more than a cruel illusion

The cold world’s chill has broken my concentration

If only there was a way to pick up the pieces and move on (If only there was a way)

If only there was a way to dream again and carry on (If only there was)

Why does my heart continue to dream despite it all? (Why does it continue?)

The starry love dream, I hope would give me a call (Oh, the starry love dream!)

The cold world’s chill has broken my concentration

If only there was a way to pick up the pieces and move on (If only there was a way)

Why does my heart continue to dream despite it all? (Why does it continue?)

The starry love dream, I hope would give me a call (Oh, the starry love dream!)

(My heart must love again…)

Why do I still dream when my heart has been broken?

Will my dreams be nothing but a memory forgotten?

Please help me find another way to realize my dream

Push away the cold currents of the torrential stream

(My heart) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(My heart) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!

So far away, even if you’re so far away from me

I‘ll never forget you, I’ll fulfill my promise, you see

I feel sad and I feel lonely, like I’m the only one here

But I know that you’re here, to chase away my fear

My heart is longing for you; I don’t want to be alone

We have to bear the pain, the sadness, the hurt, all alone

Oh, I want to keep dreaming, oh, I want to keep singing

Diamond dust flying in the sky, my broken heart is crying

There is a way to pick up the pieces and move on (There is a way)

There is a way to dream again and carry on (There is always a way)

My heart needs to continue to dream despite it all (My heart must continue)

The starry love dream, I know it will give me a call (Oh, the starry love dream!)

(My heart, oh, my heart!) This is my life, my wish, my world, and my heart

(Love again, oh, love again!) Help me find a way to mend the pieces of my heart

My heart must love again!
