Vlad and Company Bring the Title to STL... The young guys finally did it! St. Louis's 5 year plan matured one year early but there was no complaining from the Card's organization. Led by top free agent signee, RF Vlad Guerrero, St. Louis played their way to an MBL best 108-54 record (11-2 record in the postseason) on the way to winning their first ever MBL championship. After winning 54 games in 2002 and only 56 the following season, the Cards improved to 98-64 in 2004 but were upset by LA in the division series 3 games to 1. All the more reason to make some huge free agent signings for the next season, and that's exactly what they did. After Guerrero (.307-50-142), the Cards added RF Sammy Sosa (.265-56-129) to their already powerful lineup. They didn't sign any big-name pitchers, but why would you when Roy Oswalt, Corwin Malone, Mark Prior and Matt Riley are your top four starters. All in all, it was an excellent season in St. Louis. They had a team batting average of .280 (2nd in league), a team era of 3.50 (1st in league) and the average age of their starters was only 27. Oh, and they accomplished all of this with a team payroll of only around 70 million. With a heck of a lot more talent coming up, don't expect this team to give up their top spot anytime soon. ... ... ... |
