Personal AssistantMelanie stared at his departing back, her mouth hanging open in shock. “The NERVE.” She sputtered. A few people eating at surrounding tables gave her sympathetic smiles. “It will be okay, young lady,” an elderly man assured her in broken English. “Everything will be okay.” “No, it won’t be.” She moaned, tears of frustration springing to her eyes. “I may have just lost my first job – after five minutes with my employer.” Jumping up from the table, she raced out of the restaurant, pulling her cell phone out and dialing frantically. The object of her misery picked up on the first ring. “Leave me alone.” “Mr. Aiken? It’s Melanie.” The line went dead. She spewed a string of obscenities into the chilly December air. “That arrogant, egotistical, stuck-up little-” “You rang?” He inquired sarcastically, appearing suddenly in front of her. Staring up at him, she contemplated what to say. “I, uh, I’m really sorry for my… Outburst.” She began, wanting to kill herself for stooping to the level she was. Sucking up did not come easily for her. “Fine. Whatever.” He replied, rolling his eyes and blowing off the situation he had just been bothered enough by to walk out on. Her jaw dropped again in disbelief. “You’re not mad?” “I didn’t say I wasn’t mad. I just don’t have time for this.” He replied, glancing at his watch and then flicking his eyes up to meet hers. “YOU’RE my new personal assistant. YOU should be keeping track of times and the schedules, not me.” “This is my first day. I don’t know anything yet-” “Well LEARN.” “We were supposed to get acquainted first.” “And whose fault was that mishap?” He shot back. Melanie considered reminding him that he had been the one who had walked out, but decided against it. Shuffling the stack of papers in her hand, she skimmed over the small type. “You have a radio interview in fifteen minutes. Let’s get going.” He followed her into the limousine, a scowl on his face. Exhaling slowly, she looked out the window and tried to sort out her jumbled thoughts. God help me, she thought. God help me.
