What's In My VCR

Cube
Year: 1997
Running Time: 90 min
Rated: R
Genre: Sci-Fi/Horror
Starring: Nicole de Boer as Leaven, David Hewlett as Worth, Maurice Dean Wint as Quentin

Slick, tense, scary, gory, surprising. You can use a ton of words to describe Cube, and all of these words fit very well.

Because from the first 5 minutes, where a guy is sliced into a twenty little pieces a razor sharp fence, then you know this movie is different. And different is good, because what we have here is a bunch of people trapped in a room that is a perfect cube. The cube has six doors, that leads to a room with six more doors, and so on, and so on.

But the real fun begins when we find out some of the rooms have booby traps (like the poor sucker and the fence in the first 5 minutes), so now all our little jailbirds have to work together to find the exit to the Cube. The special effects used to create these traps are done incredibly well. They are perfect for this movie, and I can't say enough good things about them.

To say any more would really not be fair to the viewer because this movie thrives on surprises. But in the end I think that works against this movie because we're left with more questions than answers, and while the ending is cool, I would have liked a few more answers.
