AN ARMY OF ONE

I AM AN ARMY OF ONE. Even though there are 1,045,690 Soldiers just like me, I am my own force. With technology, with training, with support, who I am has become better than who I was. And I’ll be the first to tell you, the might of the U.S. Army doesn’t lie in numbers. It lies in me. I am An Army of One. And you can see my strength.

My name is Joe Gates and as of right now i am a private in the United States Army. (private Gates, funny no?) But anyways i joined up back in July, July 1st actually. I am going to the army mostly because of my uncle Robert. He is my favorite uncle and has been in the army for nearly 20 years and my goal is to out do him, or atleast make him proud. In the month of February I will, with any luck be promoted to Private First class. Some of the feats I have accomplished are:

as of right now, helped four other people to join up.(and im not done yet)

Helped all of those four get in good enough shape to pass the Army PT test.

Passed the PT test myself. a few times.

Scored 78 or so on the ASVAB, which got me a $4000 sign on bonus, station of choice (I chose Europe) and some college crap.

I believe I have tried to lead a good example for the rest of the soldiers.

Basic training will be at Fort Knox for Cav. Scout. and i leave June 3rd, and will with any luck return October 1st or so.

Some of the things I would like to do in the army are:

become a drill instructor

sniper

recruiter

earn my cav. hat and spurs (like the ones in the old western movies)

shoot expert

max out on my PT test

Go to Germany.

Possibly see some combat.

If I die, let it be while doing something heroic enough I will be remembered in books.

most importantly to me...be the best.

Here is a short description of my MOS (military ocupational specialty)

The Cavalry Scout is a member of a scout crew, a crucial element for the Army during combat situations. They are responsible for reconnaissance and act as the “first front” in combat. Cavalry Scouts engage the enemy with anti-armor weapons and scout vehicles in the field. Here are a few of the duties of a Cavalry Scout:

- Secure and prepare ammunition on scout vehicles

- Load, clear and fire individual and crew-served weapons

- Perform navigation during combat

- Serve as member of observation and listening posts

- Gather and report intelligence on terrain and enemy strength

- Collect data to classify routes, tunnels and bridges

- Employ principles of concealment and camouflage
