Safety Chains

Old Equipment? New Idea!

The Highway Traffic Act requires two separate means of attachment for towed equipment. Your conscience should as well.

Here is a system that I have devised for putting safety chains on my own equipment and I would like to offer this page as a way for others to upgrade their equipment at low cost while providing a safe and acceptable way to do it.

This new system, when assembled to standard, is regarded as an acceptable practice by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario.

Connection Standards

1. Use Chain, Hooks, Eyes, Bolts, etc., that have strength ratings greater than the gross vehicle weight.

(Transport 70 grade or greater recommended) IE: 3/8 Transport 70 = 20,000 lbs.

2. Chain must be connected on all towing vehicles to something other than the primary drawbar. IE: Drawbar cage or axle.

3. Have a minimum slack necessary for adequate articulation.

This shows the chain when not in use hooked onto a ring fastened in a convenient location on the tractor. The chain is properly threaded and attached, stowed ready for use on the pulling unit. You can also see the ring on the drawbar of the towed equipment where the hook will be fastened for towing.
The hook is fastened onto the permant ring on the towed equipment ready for road use.
Once a ring is fastened onto each piece of equipment (standard location), it is easy to snap the hook onto the ring and make your equipment safe and legal for road use.
This same method can be used for towing a piece of equipment behind another piece. The chain is fastened to the front piece and hooked into the ring on the wagon, etc, being towed. For example, two wagons pulling in tandem. In this case, the lead pulling unit's safety chain must equal both wagon's loaded weights.
Each towing vehicle will need these pieces with the chain threaded through a clevis on the drawbar (this is an ASAE standard that is accepted by the MTO for use with single safety chain systems). Each towed implement or wagon needs a permanently fixed ring on the drawbar for the hook to be hooked into.

Most hardware stores and implement dealers should handle the necessary pieces to make up the safety chains.
