City Lights

***special thanks goes to sir Andrew Baker for his wonderful comment when we couldn't see any stars: "Oh yeah, I guess it's always this bright in the city!"***

His smile has fallen but still you stand in place
Waiting for him to recover long-lost grace
You're threatened by this 'love' that you have found
You smile lovingly as he knocks you to the ground

When he's around you think everything's alright
Then you cry over bruises under cover of the night
You fell for him before you knew how he could be
Now you will not believe he doesn't treat you perfectly

The lights are always this bright in the city
Their glare hides the truth, and they burn all that's pretty
It's their fault there's no stars to see in the sky tonight
But if there were I know your heart could feel no delight

You call me up crying to tell me he's not real
And that you still cannot change the way you feel
You're blind to the fact that what he does is wrong
I promise you one day these wounds will make you stronger

The lights are always this bright in the city
Their glare hides the truth and they burn all that's pretty
It's their fault there's no stars to see in the sky tonight
But if there were I know your heart would not feel delight

It's unfair that one man should have the power to hurt you like he's done
It's unfair that one man should have the power to hurt you at all

The lights are always this bright in the city
Their glare hides the truth and they burn all that's pretty
It's their fault there's no stars to see in the sky tonight
But next time there are, I hope your heart will feel delight
