WHAT IS SUICIDE?

su-i-cide (plural su-i-cides) noun

1. killing yourself: the act of deliberately killing yourself

2. somebody who commits suicide: somebody who deliberately kills himself or herself

3. doing something against own best interests: the act of doing something that seems contrary to your own best interests and likely to lead to a disaster such as financial ruin or loss of position or reputation

WHO IS AT RISK?.......You Or Somebody You Love.......

- Teens who kill themselves almost always experience losses or certain stressful situations such as: Divorce, Fighting with Parents or Friends, Getting in trouble in school or with the law, or Breaking up with boy/girl friend

- Some teens because of their biochemical makeup or life experiences are at greater risk for suicide

- Teens who themselves resort to alcohol or substance abuse to deal with problems

- Teens are more likely to commit suicide when they have easy access to guns

- Teens with a family history of depression, mental disorders, or substance abuse

- Teens that have attempted suicide are more likely to attempt suicide again in the future

WARNING SIGNS

NON-VERBAL:

-Giving away personal/prized possessions

-Lack of interest in friends or school

-Sleeping too much or too little

-Increased alcohol or drug use

-Poor performance at school or at job

-Boredom,restlessness, and loss concentration

-Lack of interest in one's appearence

-Change in personality

-Not accepting praise or rewards

-Loss of appetite or significant weight loss/gain

-Reckless,agreesive or violent behavior

VERBAL:

-Complaining about physical ailments related to emotions

-Saying goodbyes and 'I love you's

Saying things like:
-"Nobody cares about me"
-"I won't be a problem for you much longer"
-"People are better off without me"
-"I don't need this anymore"
-"Life isn't worth living"
-"I probably won't see you again"

SUICIDE STATISTICS

- Almost 2,000 teens kill themselves each year

- A recent survey of high school students found that more than 1 in 12 have made a suicide attemt in the past year with 1 in 6 making plans for suicide

- Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth (age 15-24)and the eleventh leading cause of death among all Americans

- Everyday approximately fourteen young adults commit suicide

- Approximately 53% of all suicides by young adults are related to substance abuse

- Approximately four times as many males commit suicide as females, however women attempt suicide three times more frequently

- More people die each year from suicide than homicide by a ratio of 3:2

- Mental disorders (mainly depression) are associated with more than 90% of all cases of suicide

- Suicide rates have increased by 60% worldwide in the last 45 years

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP!!

- If someone you know brings up the subject of suicide take them very seriously

- Assure them that have someone to turn to if they need help

- Offer help and listen, don't lecture

- Seek professional help. Depressive disorders respond well to psychotherapy treatments or the appropriate medication
