How Much Do Geocities and Yahoo! Suck?

Last updated: Aug., 18, 1999

For those don't know it yet, 2 of the largest and most influential Internet companies - Yahoo! (which started out with a popular directory) and Geocities (which started out with a free homepage hosting service) merged to form Yahoo!. The law of synergy suggests that the combination of 2 entities can combine in a way that is more powerful than the combined worth of each separately. In this particular case, if both companies are great, they may combine in a way that makes the new company superb. However, if both comapnies stink, the merger can result in an awful mess for everyone concerned - employees, shareholders, advertisers, Internet "surfers" and "homesteaders".

Personally, I was optimistic that the 2 would combine in a great way, but lost my confidence when I read what was being said about what was Section 8 of Yahoo's Terms of Service Agreement. Although that situation has since changed (the agreement was rewritten), there are still other problems that Geocities has not addressed - other reasons why people have stopped being members and reasons why others refuse to join.

Evidence of Internet phenomena can be hard to acquire. For example, those who have deleted all their Geocities files in anger, before or after Section 8 was published, may not have documented that fact at all. I was curious if I could publish a page listing and linking to the homepages of those who did document their dissatisfaction.

Since the verb-of choice on the Internet for expressing disgust seems to be SUCK, I entered the query Geocities + sucks in the search box at Altavista. I also did some searching to determine how much dissatisfaction seemed to be directed at Yahoo! - before and after the publication of section 8.

I have organized the results into 4 sections :

Former Geocities Pages
Homepages at Geocities which are now used solely to direct visitors to where the homesteader has moved to ... and the fact that Geocities sucks.

Current Geocities Pages
Homepages at Geocities by homesteaders who have not decided to move their pages elsewhere yet ... and who mention the fact that Geocities sucks.

Anti-Geocities Pages
Homepages located at non-Geocities sites which express dissatisfaction with Geocities.

Anti-Yahoo Pages
Homepages which express dissatisfaction with Yahoo.

This page is obviously not affiliated with either Yahoo! or Geocities. Or Yahoo! Geocities, for that matter.

The Geocities, Yahoo! and Yahoo! Geocities logos are (C) their respective corporate entities.
