Point
of View
Working together in a community of talented, manually oriented physical
therapists has been
a wonderful experience. We routinely stay in touch by phone, internet
or through periodic
professional meetings.
This type of physical therapy community offers an opportunity
to air our questions,
concerns, and ideas. Additionally, we tap one another for an expertise
or to refer a client for treatment at a more appropriately located clinic.
We have found that this PT community also
receives many business perks. We benefit from
"collective" purchasing power of supplies, equipment and advertisement
space.
Not to mention collaborative professional troubleshooting,
the resumes and job opportunities we pass amongst the clinics.
Our
grassroots community advocacy of email campaigning and personal appearances
with
State legislators has helped provide for some level of political success
in securing a level of
Direct Access
to Physical Therapy.
This success was only possible because of the dedication and vigiliance
of our
clients, friends, families and dedicated efforts of Virginia Physical
Therapy Association (VPTA).
We can now happily announce that Virginia physical therapists can provide
some services
without the mandatory requirement for a doctor's referral.
However, on the national
front, Congress will continue to receive visits from many physical
therapists, PT assistants, PT and PTA students, PT aides, patients,
and administrators in hopes of
raising the awareness for
Direct Access to Physical
Therapy across the nation.
We hope
that the experiences listed above offer an opportunity for the creation
of this type of
Physical Therapy community model in your area.
