Romeo & Juliet – Alternate Independent Study Assignment 

Objectives: Do a “close reading” of a section of the play, Romeo & Juliet, and present your findings in hypertext format (web page). 

Project components:  

                                    1.    a web site 
                                    2.    a formal written paragraph 
                                    3.    an oral presentation  
 

1. Your web site will contain : 

  • a title page- or “homepage” to introduce your project and your group members
  • a “text” page
  • a “links” page
 

The text page will present the text and will include links that provide the following information: 

a) definitions of obscure words 
b) explanations of literary or historical references 
c) “deeper” meanings of words or phrases 
d) insights into the character(s) saying the lines 
e) pictures that enhance understanding of the text 
f) sounds files that enhance understanding of the text *** optional 
g) anything else that comes to your creative minds =) 
 

The links page will provide links to any sites you found helpful during your work on the project. These can either be sites that helped you with your html work or sites that helped your understanding of the text. 

2. Written Formal Paragraph 

Each person will submit a piece of writing of approximately 100 words in length in which you comment on either a) the strengths and weaknesses of your page,  
                                              or b) how working with internet technology affected your
                                                       learning of Shakespeare. 

3. Oral Presentation  

You will present your web page to the class. *** ( you will not be evaluated for creativity in your presentation) Each person in the group will comment on some aspect of your project to the class. ( we will book the computer lab for this portion of the assignment). 
 

Your web site will be evaluated in the following areas: 
a) content – knowledge & understanding of the text 
b) layout & graphics- does it look nice? 
c) navigation- do all the links work? have you provided ways to get around your site easily? 
d) creativity & originality 

Of all of these criteria, the content will be the most important.
