I used this project
with a Grade 10 General English class as an independent study for the Media
Unit. In Grade 10, we focus on Advertising and the project is a simulation
of an advertising campaign. The project can certainly be modified
and altered to suit the needs, abilities and energy levels of the students.
The main purpose of
the project is to teach students the power of brand name recognition. The
survey at the conclusion of the project is critical to ensuring the project's
impact.
Students see that
a catchy logo and a good image always triumph in the world of advertising,
no matter how suspect the product may be. My class was horrified to learn
that the group who did the least amount of work in the class achieved the
greatest brand name recognition. They had chosen a fairly goofy name and
it stuck in the heads of the general student body.
As a teacher, you
need to be prepared for this in your evaluation.
