Fringe BenefitsFringe Benefits is a group of professional quilters who live in Southwest Virginia and Upper East Tennessee. Most of us teach classes in different specialized areas of quilting, several are famous for teaching on a national level. Several of our members have received multiple ribbons and awards on the national level. We have a shop owner in our group and two of our members publish their own patterns. We get together to share ideas and sometimes critique each other's work. The Quilts of the Fringe Benefits Group have been featured in shows at Regional Arts Centers in Martinsville, Danville and Abingdon and Blacksburg, VA and are often seen at national and regional quilt shows.

Brittingham, Fringe Elements Fringe Benefits having a show entitled Fringe Elements at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia, from July 3 through October 29, 2004. The members have recently completed a challenge based on the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. All twelve of the challenge pieces will be hanging in the exhibit, as well as other quilts from each of the twelve members. The show is an exciting and diverse collection of quilts representing the many different styles of the members of this group ranging from the traditional through whimsical, pictorial, landscapes, and abstract interpretations. The Elements ChallengeIn 2003 Fringe Benefits took on a challenge to produce quilts based on the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Three members were assigned each element. The quilts are wonderful and diverse. You can see them currently at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, VA and soon, here on the website. An Emotional Challenge for the FringeWe issued ourselves a challenge to depict emotions in our quilts. Here are the results.....so far. Our small quilt challenge has resulted in some new and interesting work at each meeting. New pictures were added 5/14/02, and the results of earlier challenges are also available for viewing. Don't miss the Varmints. Gardens on the FringeBelow is a picture of a group quilt we made in in 1996-97 which consists of 10 small individual quilts attached to a unifying background. Because of the way it was made it is fondly known as the backasswards quilt. Its real name has something to do with gardens. It was displayed in Houston at Quilt Festival in 1997 where it won second place for group quilts. It was also displayed at the Lancaster Show and at Paducah in April 1998, and at North Carolina Quilt Symposium 1998 where it won "Most Innovative" in the show and Second place in the Collaborative category. For more about the making of the backasswards quilt, see our Fringes at Work page.
Next is a photo from the first "Art of the Quilt" show at the Piedmont Arts Association Gallery in Martinsville, VA. All of the Fringe Benefits members had quilts and/or garments in this invitational show, curated by Linda Fiedler which displayed work from 41 quilters from across the Southeast. The second biennial Art of the Quilt Show took place in November-December of 2000. It was also curated by Linda and our group once again participated.
