CONGRATULATIONS

Steve Silvagni

Guernsey Number : 1
On Your Milestone-250th Game for the Blues ,
You Are My True Blue Champion Full-Back of the Century.
Carlton would look undressed without a Silvagni.
Full-back Stephen has been the mainstay in 248 games since 1985
and his father, Sergio, who was a rugged ruck-rover to John Nicholls,
played 239 games from 1957 to '71. Stephen's greatest personal triumph was
selection as full-back in the AFL Team of the Century in 1996.
Has been a marvellous Blue, an athletic and willing performer
who has also rescued the side several times kicking goals at full-forward.
Player honors: 3rd Brownlow Medal 1990; best and fairest 1990, 1996;
2nd best and fairest 1994; 3rd best and fairest 1995;

Aaron Hamill

Guernsey Number : 36
Aaron Signed a lucrative two-year contract with the Blues last August and is regarded as one of the players most likely to reach the high spots. Has played 42 games in three seasons and is an exciting young forward from Canberra with plenty of know-how. Missed three games near the end of '98 with an ankle injury, but was back for the last two matches and appears ready to take another big step. Player honors: pre-season premiership side 1997.

Scott Camporeale

Guernsey Number : 16
When the Blues were in terrible trouble in the first half of 1998, Camporeale was one of the players who kept the flag flying. The 1995 premiership player was the Blues' chief kick-winner in '98 with 334 (10th best in the competition in the home and away series). The lean and swift wingman/half-forward/on-baller had a total of 485 disposals (kicks/handballs) and in the home and away rounds to finish 14th on the AFL leader board. Had plenty of the ball and in often trying times. Equal fourth in best and fairest in '98. Player honors: AFL Norwich Rising Star nominee 1995; premiership side 1995; pre-season premiership side 1997. Brownlow Medal: 1998 votes (7); career votes (17). Recruited from : WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS (SA).

Anthony Koutoufides

Guernsey Number : 43
Played 21 of the 22 games in 1998, but managed only 16th position in the best and fairest voting which surely underlines the drop in status of this 1995 All-Australian selection. One of the big disappointments in the game as a couple of years ago he seemed to be travelling express to the elite suite. The Blues must have been very tempted to drop him mid-1998, but they were patient and as the season wore on, 'Kouta' seemed to be slowly turning it all around again. Player honors: All-Australian 1995; leading goalkicker 1997; premiership side 1995; pre-season premiership side 1997. Brownlow Medal: career votes (34). Matthew Lloyed

Guernsey Number : 18
Admired for his skill, courage and focus. Showed his real quality last season when he overcame a quiet start to the home and away season to put through 40 goals in the last nine games, finishing the season with 70 (the highest individual yearly tally during Sheedy's reign at Essendon), being named in the All-Australian side and finishing third in the club best and fairest. Can play in any position up forward (surprisingly started the third quarter of the qualifying final in defence), has poise, vice-like hands and an accurate and penetrating left-foot kick. Player honors: 3rd best and fairest 1997, 1998; All-Australian 1998; leading goalkicker 1997, 1998; AFL Norwich Rising Star nominee 1996. Brownlow Medal: 1998 votes (5); career votes (15). James Hird

Guernsey Number : 5
Had an eventful year, his first as club captain, with discussion on the impact of his media commitments (particularly one stinging article by former Hawk champ Dermott Brereton) and hamstring problems overshadowing his football. The fact is, as all football-watchers acknowledge, he is a genuine star. His performance in his 100th game against Sydney and his courage to continue after being poleaxed against St Kilda in round 17 was typical. Unfortunately, injury has confined him to just 20 out of a possible 45 games in the past two years -- a statistic magnified because of his position at the forefront of AFL media celebrities. For all his match-winning abilities up forward, he had to be used in the midfield in 1998 to provide some drive out of the centre. An injury-free Hird will be a huge bonus for Essendon. Player honors: Brownlow Medal 1996; best and fairest 1994, 1995, 1996; All-Australian 1995, 1996; AFL Norwich Rising Star nominee 1993; leading goalkicker 1995, 1996; premiership side 1993; night premiership sides 1993, 1994; captain since 1998. Brownlow Medal: 1998 votes (4); career votes (47). Recruited from : AINSLIE (ACT) Date of birth 04/02/73 Height 185cm Weight 93kg Debut 1992 Career games 110 Career goals 187 Games 1997 7 Goals 1997 18 Games 1998 13 Goals 1998 19 Games 1999 2 Goals 1999 1 Night matches 10 Night goals 18 Finals matches 9 Finals goals 12 Grand finals 1 Grand final goals 2 Premierships 1 State of Origin matches 1 State of Origin ACT

Mark Mercuri

Guernsey Number : 2
Top quality player who is one of the classiest finishers in the game with his sublime disposal and ability to kick goals under pressure. Can play in all positions, but is probably most valuable -- if his stamina is good enough -- as an attacking midfielder. Had a very consistent 1998 finishing fourth in the club best and fairest and representing Victoria, despite being hampered at times by a groin injury. Good in the air for his size and never shirks an issue. At 25 and with just over 100 games to his credit, is one of the team's leaders. Player honors: 2nd best and fairest 1996; AFL Norwich Rising Star nominee 1993; pre-season premiership sides 1993, 1994; premiership side 1993. Brownlow Medal: 1998 votes (4); career votes (22). Recruited from : KEILOR PARK Date of birth 21/02/74 Height 180cm Weight 77kg Debut 1992 Career games 122 Career goals 167 Games 1997 11 Goals 1997 12 Games 1998 20 Goals 1998 24 Games 1999 12 Goals 1999 16 Night matches 11 Night goals 9 Finals matches 9 Finals goals 16 Grand finals 1 Grand final goals 3 Premierships 1 State of Origin matches 3 State of Origin VIC

Michael Long

Guernsey Number : 13
Won the club's most courageous award after his second comeback from a knee reconstruction saw him play nine senior games in 1998. A hamstring problem forced him to miss three more games late in the season. Such a great player to watch, but so cruelly struck down by injury in the past, all football-watchers savor every moment he's in the action. His evasive skills, lightning handball and acceleration were again on display by the end of the year. Back to his scintillating best early in the qualifying final and hopefully, with his first full pre-season for several years, can continue to play an exciting role up forward. Player honors: 2nd best and fairest 1995; All-Australian 1995; Norm Smith Medal 1993; pre-season premiership sides 1990, 1993; premiership side 1993. Brownlow Medal: 1998 votes (2); career votes (47).
