Reviews for Earthbound

JEFF's Review

This is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. The cool story, the funny sound effects, everything about this game makes it one of the greatest. I admit that I was once a young kid that loved videogames but would only play them if the graphics on the back of the box were good enough. They were very odd looking, and there were no other good games available at Blockbuster, so i said, "Aw, what the hey!" and I rented it. I don't think that I've ever been more surprised in my life at a videogame. It did look a little like a kid's game at first, but there is some adult humor in there. Even some mild swearing. But its not too bad. I really can't recommend this game enough; its one of the best on the system. It's one of those RPGs that lures you in right from the beginning, and stays with you forever. Well....not forever....a long time though. The story is the best part of this experience. A meteor from ten years in the future strikes Ness's hometown (Onett), and he decides to check it out. So he walks on over to the meteorite, and a beam shoots down on to it. Emerging from the bright light is an insect pleading for help. He said that ten years in the future, an evil entity named Giygas has taken over the world (sorry if the story is a little sketchy, its been a while since I've played this game). It asks you to help save the world and stop Giygas before he rules all. Ness is unsure because he is hardly the hero type, but he boldly accepts the mission to save the world from destruction. Ness eventually meets up with his friends, and runs into obstacles on his way: Pokey, a big pile of puke, crooked politicians, posessed road signs, and talking monkeys just to name a few. You can tell this game is wacky.

The gameplay is deep for expert RPGers, yet simplistic for the young'uns. It's fun for all ages. The battle system and the plot are very easy to understand, so you can dive right in and have fun.

The music is actually not as bad as you'd expect. It's catchy, and fits the game very well. However, some songs can get annoying after a while (i.e. Saturn Valley Theme).

Control is right on the money. You can move Ness wherever you like, but it would have been good if there was more variety in the control. The control seems WAY too simple for its own good, but you won't give a hoot anyway, so it's all good.

With its wacky plot and humorous characters, Earthbound is definitely a keeper for all ages, but if you're looking for a VERY interesting plot and deep characters, then buy Chrono Cross.
