Spring 2006 Workdays and Tours

June 17 – 9:00 a.m. – Douglas-Hart Nature Center. We will do whatever work Site Superintendent David Mott has in store for us. The Nature Center is at the corner of Lerna Road and Rte. 316 in Mattoon.

June 24 – 9:00 a.m. – Lafferty Nature Center. We will continue our work on bush honeysuckle. Bring shovels and loppers. Lafferty is behind Carl Sandberg School on Reynolds Drive in Charleston.

July 8 – 9:00 a.m. – Waterworks Hill Prairie. We will work on eliminating exotic species from this little jewel in the middle of the woods. Bring loppers. Meet at our parking area at the corner of McKinley Avenue and Stoner Drive East in Charleston.

July 15 – 9:00 a.m. – Hanley Prairie. We will work on removal of autumn olive. Bring loppers. Turn right (west) off Rte. 130 on Coles County Road 300 N. and go to the pole building at the end of the road.

July 22 – 9:00 a.m. – Lincoln Bike Trail Prairie. We will work on exotic removal. Bring loppers. Meet in the parking lot of Douglas-Hart Nature Center.

July 29 – 9:00 a.m. – Neoga Railroad Prairie. We will have a walk-through of this neat little prairie remnant to identify the species present. Take Rte. 45 south from the 4-way stop in Neoga for one mile and turn right at the cemetery sign.

August 5 – 9:00 a.m. – Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Bush honeysuckle removal.

August 17 (Thursday) – 6:30 p.m. – Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Meeting of Embarras Volunteer Stewards volunteers to plan fall workdays. Everyone interested in the work of our group is invited.

August 19 – 9:00 a.m. – Tour of 12-Mile Prairie. Take I-57 to the Farina exit. Meet along Rte. 37 at the south edge of Farina.

September 9 – 9:00 a.m. – Embarras Bluffs. We will continue our work to eliminate exotic and invasive species in this lovely woodland. Bring loppers. Meet at the corner of Coles County Roads 2300 E. and 1600 N. across from the church.

September 16 – 9:00 a.m. – Lafferty Nature Center. Continued work on bush honeysuckle.

September 23 – 9:00 a.m. – Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Our most likely chore will be taking out bush honeysuckle.

September 30 – 9:00 a.m. - James Nance Woods. Work on autumn olive and sugar maple. Take 6th Street West from Neoga and go 2.2 miles past the city limits to Shelby County Road 3425 E. Turn right and go 0.9 mile past two “S” curves to the woods on the right.
