Breed Info
Curlies are of medium size, but also come in pony and draft size. Most Curlies are 14.2 to 15.3 hh. (1000 to 1300 lbs)
The curly coat can be hypo-allergenic. Some people who react to other horses do not experience the same allergic response to Curlies and report having none or next to no allergic symptoms. The hair is round instead of flat. It is barbed or feathered and can be spun and woven into garments. Testing has proven it to be mohair instead of actual horse hair. Some can completely shed their mane and tail in summer, their mane and tail have ringlet style curls. The fine soft hair of the Curly can be compared to an Angora Goat. Foals arrrive with a thick krinkly coats, even inside their ears are curly and they have beautiful curly eyelashes. Coat care is simple, they like to be brushed and catered to like any horse, in spring a shedding knife helps a great deal to assist in removing the winter coat. The heavy shedding period only lasts a short while and then you have a Curly in summer coat which can be smooth or wavy, a pretty neat change from winter. There are several winter coat patterns from a crushed velvet effect to a perfect marcel wave to extremely tight curls over the entire body. In fall they start to re-grow their beautiful winter coat again.
Curlies are truely unique. Not only are they known for their friendly, calm, even temperament, but they are so easy to care for they take much of the strain out of owning a horse.Curlies are hardy horses and are very easy keepers. Along with the normal daily care and attention, they do well, and seem to prefer, being outside rather than being in a stall. What they need more than a stall is adequate shade and a windbreak.
They somewhat resemble the early day Morgan in confirmation and a number
of traits have been found in this unique breed that links them to the
primitive horse. Their soft, calm looking eyes have an unusual
Oriental slant to them. This slant gives them a sort of sleepy
look, but it also gives them a larger range of vision to the rear. The
sleepy look is very deceiving, they have a proud carriage, very alert
and are not lazy.
Curlies have unsually tough round hoofs, the structure
of their hooves gives them a very sound foot, the walls being stronger and
the overall hoof more sound. With regular hoof care they can go without being shod.
They have stout round cannon;straight legs, that also move straight;flat knees; stronghocks; short back which indicates five lumbar vertebra;powerful round shoulders; v'd chest and round barrel, all which contribute to their strengh and
endurance.
