What is Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do?

Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do is one of the branches of the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu family. It is characterised by fast movements and highly mobile stances. It deals with attacks by avoiding the opponent and counter-attacking from the side to make the attacker’s position as difficult as possible.

Matsubayashi-Ryu is the creation of Grandmaster Shoshin Nagamine (1907 - 1997) and is based on the classic Shuri and Tomari branches of Shorin-Ryu, as well as incorporating the ideas and experiences of well-known fighters, such as Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu.

Anyone wishing to know more about the history of Matsubayashi-Ryu and about Grandmaster Shoshin Nagamine should visit the excellent web site of the World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Association (WMKA)
