30th - RUSSIA - FLOODING - Pounding rains inundated Moscow for the third consecutive day - twice the average amount of rain for June had fallen on Moscow within 48 hours.

30th - GREECE - OUT OF CONTROL WILDFIRES - Officials declared a state of emergency for the entire region of Pelion. The fire was the second to break out in the central part of the country within three days. More than 2,500 acres of forest and cropland was destroyed in a prior blaze.

28th - COSTA RICA - LANDSLIDE - 10 DEAD - at the tourist resort of Laguna de Arancibia . Seven other victims remained missing.

28th - INDIA - FLOODS - 5 DEAD - over four million people forced to flee to relief camps.

The floods have inundated 250 communities in six districts and affected almost a quarter of a million people. Monsoon rains in the region usually continue through September.

25th - CROATIA - KILLER HEATWAVE - 50 DEAD.

25th - CHILE - VIOLENT STORMS WITH HIGH WINDS, HEAVY SNOWFALL, LANDSLIDES - 7 DEAD - 9 missing. Came 11 days after Chile's worst storms in two decades left much of the country inundated by floods.

23rd - CHINA - LIGHTNING STRUCK AN AIRLINER which exploded and crashed - 46 DEAD - 38 passengers and four crew members and four people on the ground near the site of the crash.

23rd - NEPAL - MONSOON RAIN TRIGGERED LANDSLIDES - 13 DEAD - 5 injured. 30 people have lost their lives across mountainous Nepal in floods or landslides since the onset of the monsoon early this month. Monsoon rains in Nepal continue through early September.

23rd - BANGLADESH - FLOODING AND LANDSLIDE - 9 DEAD - 50 injured. More rain expected in the next few days.

22nd - MEXICO - MUDSLIDES FROM RAINS FROM HURRICANE CARLOTTA, THE 2ND HURRICANE OF THE SEASON - 6 DEAD - over 1,000 people evacuated both Mexican coasts.

22nd - PAKISTAN - DROUGHT AND HEAT - 24 DEAD - dust storms were also predicted to hit the region.

20TH - CHINA - FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES - 33 DEAD - The rain heralded the onset of the often devastating Chinese summer flood season.

19th - CHINA - UNPRECEDENTED MASSIVE RED TIDE OF ALGAL BLOOM - in the East China Sea, grew to an unprecedented 2,700 square miles on Monday. The poisonous algae was more than six and a half feet deep in some places.

19th - RUSSIA - POWERFUL STORM - 3 DEAD - swept through two regions of central Russia. The storm toppled trees and electrical lines, causing structural damage in the republic of Tatarstan, 420 miles south of Moscow.

19th - MEXICO - HURRICANE CARLOTTA THREATENS - this is the season's first hurricane in the eastern Pacific and a hurricane warning has been issued for a 300-mile stretch of coastline. The warnings included the popular beach resorts of Acapulco and Ixtapa. At least 100 families in Acapulco were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The storm was packing winds of 81 mph early Tuesday with further intensification likely. The storm band dumped rain on much of southern Mexico and warnings were issued for mudslides and flooding.

19th - VENEZUELA - AVALANCHE - 5 DEAD - worst climbing accident in the country's history.

18th -JAPAN - AVALANCHE - 4 DEAD - 5 injured - they were attempting the rescue of a man who was missing.


17th - ICELAND - 6.6 EARTHQUAKE - LARGEST IN 90 YEARS - Homes near the quake's center suffered considerable structural damage and were reported to no longer be habitable. Power supplies were cut and water pipes were broken in neighboring communities and farms. Many roads were left blocked by rocks, which had fallen from nearby mountains.

17th - MARYLAND - LIGHTNING STRIKE - ONE DEAD - 8 injured standing under at tree at a Rugby Tournament.

16th - UNITED STATES - WILDFIRES:
COLORADO - 2 WILDFIRES CONTINUED TO GROW - the Bobcat Fire north of Denver and the Hi Meadow Fire near Bailey have charred more than 17,000 acres in four days and destroyed more than 50 homes.
NEW MEXICO - strong winds fanned the flames of a 1,000-acre wildfire in the northern part of the state and a 1,000-acre fire in the Gila National Forest.
CALIFORNIA - Hot windy weather near the Lake Berryessa Fire in Northern California made firefighting conditions difficult.
HAWAII - WILDFIRES RAGE - additional danger is high as they suffer their 3rd year of drought.

15th - CYPRUS - WILDFIRES - raged over the eastern Mediterranean island. fueled by soaring temperatures. Several fires, which began on Monday, were made more intense by temperatures near 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

15TH - CHILE - WORST RAINS IN 20 YEARS - Central Chile, including the city of Santiago, was declared a disaster area - the streets of the capital city turned into rivers and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes. he rains and flooding ravaged southern Chile for two weeks before moving to the central region. More than 40,000 people near the city of Valdivia, 435 miles south of Santiago, have been left homeless by the severe weather.

15th - MEXICO - FLOODING - More than 200 people near the southern Mexican city of Villahermosa were evacuated from their homes after authorities were forced to open the floodgates of a nearby dam. The dangerously full Penitas Dam was filled to overflowing by days of incessant rain. Last year, the dam was opened after a month of flooding, forcing almost 230,000 people to flee their homes.

14th - SICILY - MT. ETNA ERUPTS FOR THE 62ND TIME THIS YEAR - it exploded for about 45 minutes, sending lava, gas and volcanic ash into the Mediterranean sky.

14th - CALIFORNIA - RECORD-BREAKING HEATWAVE - hit the normally cool and foggy city of San Francisco with temperatures soaring to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures rose to 110 degrees Fahrenheit further inland around the Silicon Valley city of San Jose. The heat broke records throughout Northern California, putting heavy demand on the region's power grid.

9TH - IRAN - DROUGHT - Hundreds of thousands of fish have died as the huge Arjang Lagoon completely dried up. Heaps of the dead and dying fish were spread over thousands of acres of parched land that was once a huge body of water covering 5,440 ares. It had been a nesting place for migrating birds and a breeding area for fish. Another large lagoon nearby was also threatened by the severe drought that has lingered for two years.

9th - COLOMBIA - TORRENTIAL RAINFALL AND FLOODING - At least 10,000 people in have been affected.


9TH - TURKEY - 2 EARTHQUAKES - 2 DEAD - occurred in the same region hit with a 5.9 temblor earlier this week. 4,600 homes left in ruins rural areas, thousands of people have been forced to sleep in tents in the streets and parks for the past three nights.

7th - CHINA - FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES - triggered by torrential rains have killed 74 people and left thousands homeless.

6TH - MEXICO - POPOCATEPETL VOLCANO ERUPTED - with a spew of ash and gas, sending a rain of fine ash over at least five small towns nearby.

6th - CHINA - LIGHTNING BOLT - 7 DEAD - herders killed by a single lightning bolt. The region is known for thunderstorms with lightning and hail that strike without warning during the summer months.

4th - SICILY - MOUNT ETNA ERUPTS FOR THE 61ST TIME THIS YEAR - The most spectacular side-effect of the eruption came when the cloud blotted out the sun as if in a solar eclipse. The eruption followed tremors that shook the mountain's slopes, cracking open new crevices that sprayed lava skyward.

3rd - MEXICO - MUDSLIDE - 7 DEAD - buried alive when a hillside weakened by excavations and days of pounding rains gave way and buried homes beneath tons of mud.

2nd -SICILY - MOUNT ETNA VOLCANO ERUPTED - spewing a fountain of lava and sending a column of ash and smoke a mile into the Mediterranean sky. After five hours of tremors, molten lava streamed 1,800 feet down the flanks of the volcano and flowed toward the deserted Valle del Bove. The activity was the most violent seen this year.

2ND - NORTHWEST CHINA - FLASH FLOODS TRIGGERED BY TORRENTIAL RAIN - 28 DEAD - 10 people left missing and 15 others sustained injuries. Twenty communities in Dachang County in eastern Gansu were submerged and nearly 300 buildings leveled. Local officials reported that more than 1,000 head of cattle were also lost in the flood. Power to the entire county was cut and six schools were destroyed.
