Shopping in Brighton & Hove

Brighton and Hove has its share of usual UK high-street shops and outlets selling the usual books, magazines, electronic goods right through to clothes.

The main shopping precincts can be divided into 6 major areas - each one catering to a slightly different crowds but often quite different tastes.

  • Churchill Square and Western Road - located in the centre of Brighton due south from Brighton train station is probably the city's main shopping district.

  • The Lanes - located adjacent to Churchill Square offers smaller shops, boutiques and cafes for a slightly more upmarket shopper.

  • The North Lanes - located down the (eastern) hill from Brighton Station is a microcosm of Brighton's popular cultural scene with shops selling everything from antiques and original 'Mod' gear from the 1960s, right through to handcrafted furniture from Bali, designer spectacles to Vegetarian shoes (yup!).

  • St. James' - found across the Old Steine is the heart of gay, lesbian and transgendered Brighton & Hove and boasts of some of the smartest stores selling bric-a-brac right through to dog-grooming.

  • Brighton Marina - located a little way east out towards Rottingdean, Phase II of the Marina has recently been completed to give the area a rather more cosmopolitan feel.

  • George Street, Hove - can be found East of the city in the heart of Hove and was recently renovated to accommodate more outdoor seating for the cafes and bars that have spruced up this area. This is also the site of the Annual French Market which brings the finest of produce from our seaboard neighbours to our shores.
