FIRST GENERATION

1.  Elisha WILCOX.  

He was married on to Mary MEECH in 1774.  Mary MEECH was born in 1721.  Children of Elisha WILCOX and Mary MEECH were:

SECOND GENERATION

2.  Elisha Sr. WILCOX United Empire Loyalist1,2,3,2,2 was born on JUL 11 1728 in New York State.  He died in 1797 in Detroit River.  Shirley Benedict Willcox from Chatham Ontario in the mid 1970's traveled extensively  researching the Willcox Wilcox family 

.On one of his visits to my home in St. Catharines prior to my retirement in 1984 he provided me with  copies of much of his materiel. I understand that his son Larry did  considerable research in the archives in Ottawa.

Shirley suffered a stroke about 10 years ago and passed away in 1996.

Elisha Wilcox's  background has eluded us, however  his name turns up often in the archives of Ontario and the American Colonies. I can only conclude that Elisha Wilcox was a very common name in that  era 1700 to 1800.

In a  geneolagy paper  written by Shirley Wilcox in  1987 he suggests that an  Elisha was born July in 1728 a son of Elisha and Mary Leech Willocks 

He married Amy------ about 1774 and they settled in Thorn Bottom in Nicholson  Township, Wyoming county Pa.

Some researchers asume that he was killed at the Battle of Wyoming  others believe that he was taken prisoner and ended up in Niagara On the Lake and from there to Essex  County 

Some time some place the whole story may be revealed. 


An Elisha Wilcox was taken prisoner at the Battle of Wyoming in Pa. Some researchers think that he was killed at that Battle. His name then turns up as a member of Butlers Rangers. Note that it was the Butlers Rangers who provoked the Wyoming Battle. It was a massacre much like the one in Cherry Valley. Elisha's name is recorded as a member of Butlers Rangers, 1779 to 1783.

Elisha settled on lot 23 Colchester Township Essex County Ontario had at least 6 sons. Elisha jr. Hezakiah Morris James Asa and a daughter Saraha joined him in Detroit in 1787. These family names often appear in documents petioning for land. Hezakiah 
Settled on Lot 18 in Raliegh Township on the banks of the Thames River and is really the only family member we have a fair record though not complete. 
  
Elisha and Hezakiah were United Empire Loyalists. Nearly 50,000 arrived in Upper and Lower Canada following the American Revolution.  Most of them went to The Maritimes and Eastern Ontario.  A smaller number settled along the shores of the lakes in Niagara and the Chatham area . The Thames River gave the early settlers access to good land further inland. The first few years life was very hard and they had to depend on the British Government for food supplies and tools, however these groups soon became some of the most prosperous farmers in what was to become Ontario  

It is reported that Elisha and his daughter Sarah, his son in law Eliphilet Emmons and a young son (grandson) were murdered by Indians on the banks of the Detroit River.

There are various documents signed by Chief Justice Baby to support this in the archives.

The story is told by a Amos Wilcox of Cooksville Ontario who was a veteran of the American Revolution who was in battles at Lundys lane Queenston Hieghts and Detroit.

Bob and Muriel Wilcox of Chatham were Shirley Wilcox's genealogy partners and did some travelling in the North Eastern United States they found evidence that Elisha owned land prior to the American Revolution near Wilksberry Penn.

I have included copies of some of these documents in the Appendix in this Family genealogy as well as some pictures of interest.

You will also note that some short bibliographies of some of the descendants are included. I think it makes the whole family genealogy more interesting and since this a computer generated report, additions are easy.  In addition there are paragraphs headed [Bob Wilcox  Remembers] they are just a few of my recollections. I know that this genealogy of the descendants of Elisha  will never be complete but it is a good record of a lot of  fine  people born in the last 300 years.

To read about the early pioneer families who settled in Kent County an excellent reference is Romantic Kent the Story of a County 1626 -1952 by Victor Lauriston

On August 12, 1952, Mr. Lauriston wrote in his introduction to the book:

"In so large a book errors are inevitable. That I may be wrong is fundamental. My estimates of men and events may at times be counter to popular opinion; but they represent my sincere best judgement in the light of available evidence. Time will doubtless revise my conclusions in the interest of truth, which is eternal."

As a matter of further interest I have a publication entitled Historical Notes on the Providence United Church River Road Raliegh Township near Chatham, Ontario 1866-1966  by Reverent J.L. Vinet.

This is an excellent history of the Providence Church to which a number of Elisha decendants attended over the years and likely still do. The first Settlers came as early as 1770 and the first circut ride preacher visited the area August 10 1804 and it was the famed Nathan Bangsan oustanding preacher from Detroit. In1808  the reverend William Case held worship services in the home of Isaac Dolson.
The history goes on to say that the pioneers of the Thames had a rough and tough life and it was no secerat that they loved their whiskey. The Rev. Case left in his memoirs  this not to flaterring comment thatsome of them were the most wicked and dissapated people in America .He also left in his memoirs about preaching at the home if Isaac Dolson about the evils of liquor  an some even brought whiskey to the meeting. One rough loking man called the preacher a wizard and made for the door accidendly breaking the bottle on his way out. 

I am sure it could not have been a Wilcox

THIRD GENERATION

5.  Hezakiah 1 WILCOX U.E.L. was born in 1759 in New York State.  He died in 1820 in Raliegh Township Chatham Onraio.  Hezakiah was a United Empire Loyalists and settled on lot18 RiverRoad Raliegh Township1790.

He had a sister Sarah and 4 brothers James Morris Elisha and Asa

He and Sarah Brown had  5 children James Margret Mary Hezakiah and Issac

His son Hezakiah Married Lana Cryderman and raised 17 children on Lot 18 Raliegh Township  River Thames (River La Trench)

The original burial area is awash along the Thames river and the head stones of many of the early settlers have been moved to along the River Road including Hezakiahs

His large house has been refurbished beyond recognition except fot the three chimneys

 

Saraha BROWN was born in 1769 in North Carolina U.S.A..  She died on APR 25 1853 in Raliegh Township Chatham Onraio.  Children of Hezakiah 1 WILCOX U.E.L. and Saraha BROWN were:

She was married on to Elliphit EMMONS in New York State.  Elliphit EMMONS was born in 1747 in New York State.  He died in 1797 in Colchester,Ontario.  Sarha 1 WILCOX and Elliphit EMMONS had no known children.




FOURTH GENERATION

9.  Hezakiah WILCOX died January14 1897 in River Road Raliegh Township Kent Ontario Canada.  He was born October14 1822 in Raliegh Township Chatham Onraio.  Hezakiah married Lana Cryderman of Campden Township Penn.U.S.A.born Oct. 30 1824

InThamesville Ontario.Valentines day Feb. 14 1842. The Reverend John R.Williston of the Weslyn Methodist  She was 18 he was 20. Their Witnesses were Stockton and Catharine Lewis

They had a family of 17 all raised in the large house on the River Thames

He passed away in 1895 She in 1907

A death notice in the Chatham paper notes that one of the old pioneer familes along the River Road in Raliegh Township thinned out wonderfully wih the death of Hezakiah and listing their chldren.( a way of speaking in those early days).

The daughters married into the following families in order Stratford Walsh Vinters Carter Stokes and  Deloge. Emily died as an infant.

The sons married into families named  Dauphan Dudley Duncan Duuncan Wells and Urquhart. John and James married sisters.

He was married on to Lana (Lena) CRYDERMAN Febrary 18 1842 in Chatham Ontario.  Lana (Lena) CRYDERMAN was born on OCT 30 1824 in Quebec.  She died in 1907 in Chatham Ontario.  Children of Hezakiah WILCOX and Lana (Lena) CRYDERMAN were:

Valentine was well known as a great tease. At family gatherings he would wrestle with kids and usually some one got hurt and started to cry and either Valentine or some one would get mad

Valintines wife was Isobelle Dudley
 I remember her bed ridden in the house on  Highway no,2  She would always warn me about the old sow in the pig yard which was just off the back step of the kitchen I very gentle person

Isobelle last name on my fathers birth certificate is spelled Dauptien could be a French spelling.

The Dudley's of Lansing Mi  were regular visitors to the farm in Cottam  and I also remember Dudleys from Grand Rapids Some of the were Latter Days Saints. I know very little about their heritage and it could well be that some one has their geneology

He was married on to Isabelle DUDLEY in 1882 in RalieghTownship Kent County Ontario.  Isabelle DUDLEY was born in 1865 in Stoney Point Ontario Canada.  She died in 1935 in Chatham Ontario.  Children of Valentine WILCOX and Isabelle DUDLEY were:

Bill and Lloyd wilcox never married and farmed the home place on No 2 Highway just out of Chatham in Raliegh Township They were excellent farmers and in their retirement years were well known in the area sitting on their front porch with a friendly wave to passers by, Thier farm was sold to the Pioneer Seed Corn Company and the home was destroyed when they moved to a retirement home, The head office of Pioneer is located on that property .

			BOBWILCOX REMEMBERS 

			in the early 1930s a trip to Chatham on Sunday from Walkerville was  was a regular where Bill and Lloyd were occuurrence. Our first stop was the Copley family then a stop at Valentine and Isobelle. We would also visit my mothers Mother and mothers sister Margeret. If time permitted we would also dop in on Dads youngest Sister Isobelle and her family , We might even drop in on Dads brother Morley . My Dad use to tease Floss.

			Can you imagine just dropping in on people un announced, It was a common practice in those years

Margert WALKER was born in 1848 in RalieghTownship Kent County Ontario.  She died in 1880 in RalieghTownship Kent County Ontario.  Valentine WILCOX and Margert WALKER had no known children.


20.  James WILCOX was born on MAY 5 1854 in RalieghTownship Kent County Ontario.  He died on DEC 22 1905.

He was married on to Margaret DUNCAN on OCT 15 1884 in Chatham Ontario.  Margaret DUNCAN was born in 1863 in Scotland.  She died in 1939 in Walkerville, Ontario.  She .  We use to visit Aunt Mag In Windsor When her hushand James died she sold the farm and moved to Windsor and took in boarders She was always so nice to me I usually fella sleep on an old fashioned couch in the living room Bob and Mae were living their at the time 1930 1935

Aunt Mag raised a large family on her own during some very tough economic  times  Children of James WILCOX and Margaret DUNCAN were:

We use to visit Uncle John and Aunt Mimewhen they had a farm at North Ridge on Highway no.3.  I also remember Ted and Thema with their new baby Ross who had very red hair and was chubby baby boy

Aunt Mime was a long toime member of The Womens Institute and I remember when they moved to the house on Bill Martinsons farm two doors down from where we lived

Aunt Mime was quite Scottish and could recite Bobbie Burns poetry fluently

Uncle John and Uncle Jim were brothers who married sisters Margret and Jehmima Duncan whose family is written about in the historical atlas of Kent County about 1870

He was married on to Jehmima DUNCAN on JAN 9 1889 in Chatham Ontario.  Jehmima DUNCAN was born on APR 12 1867 in Valetta Ontario.  She died on AUG 6 1954 in Windsor, Ontario.  After her husband died she lived with Bill Martinson  and family until 1953 in Tilbury Then moved to Windsor to livewith Ted and family until her death in1954  Children of John WILCOX and Jehmima DUNCAN were:

Worked in Detroit in for Detroit Ice and Creamery and the automobile industry. Moved backed to Chatham area and operated a butcher shop.

Married in Chatham and moved to Detroit and worked in the buffing and polishing trade. At one time lived in Windsor and worked in Detriot crossing the Detroit river on the ferry twice daily. During the depression he had a good job at the Canadian Motor Lamp. 

In 1935 he and his wife Ethel purchased a farm in Cottam Ontario. 26 acres an old house and a number of barns and outbuildings. $2800.00. Pigs were $6.00 a hundred and wheat was 40 cents a bushel their son Robert was 10 years old.He left Grade 6 in a large city school to attend School Section  Gosfield North 2 room school under the direction of Miss Mc Killop and Miss Houston.

During the second world war Ethel Wilcox was a nurse in the infirmery at the then known  Assumption College. She also nursed many local people in the area from time to time after the war.

In the late 1950 and early 1960,s Edgar (Dude) and Ethel operated a sucessful road side market.

About the same time after their son Robert was married and moved to Vineland Kitchener and Brghton area they raised Betty and Diane Bulmer. Both these girls married local boys and live nearby and have been a great source of companionship and help for Ethel 

Ethel was still living in the farm house she moved into in 1935 until she fell and was hospitalized in the fall 1988 In the spring of 1999 she took up residence at the Sun Parlor Home for Senior Citizens 

She is immobile but quite alert and as she says says under the circumstances she is doing quite well

Bob Wilcox Remembers

Bill Martinson was a good friend of my father. When we moved to the farm in Cottam in 1935 they shared machinery and worked to gether.  I remember the big round roof barn on the farm

Bill picked me up to go to school the first day in Cottam , he was driving a model T

His brother Harry had the Hardware Store in CottamI spent a lot of time at the Martinson farm . Here was only child from the city and  an oppertunity to hang out with Louise Mima and Frankie all good looking gals

The first year I went to their place every night about 6 oclock to get fresh milk The farm was almost next door but it took nearly an hour for this chore.I learned to ride a two wheel bicycle at their place,

 We had no cows for the first few months.

We bought our first cows from Bill Dresser on the ninth conncesion.

Times were tough and Money was scarce but we never were hungry .I could write a novel about those public school days and one or two years in high school .

A very important time of any ones life with many memories.I often think how much one remembers when he or she was  12  to 17 years old Probably more than any other period in ones life  Children of Margaret Irene WILCOX and William  MARTINSON were:

Doreen married Robert Wilcox December 8,1951 and moved to Kitchener where she worked in Medical Records at the K W Hospital. Her first child Wendy Gaye was born in Kitchner July 20 1953

The family moved to Brighton Ontario in 1954 and returned to Vineland in 1956 where her husband Bob was employed until retirement.Second child Rob was born while in Vineland

They purchased a home in 1958 on Caroline Street and . Moved across the street in 1964 to 5 Marlene where they now reside David was born while living on Caroline Street

Doreen also worked on a part time basis at Sears during the 1970's

She took up basket making when her husband retired and with her daughter Wendy attended a number of sucessful craft shows

Doreen spends her summer at the family cottage in Port Ryerse. Loves to play bridge ,watch the Blue Jays and rearrange furniture

    Ted remembers his father telling about Indians sleeping around the fireplace in the winter and steppng over them in the morning.

    Ross remembers visiting my grandpa and grandma as a child and sitting on my grandfather's knee. I remember playing in their yard and sometimes sleeping over night.    
    I also remember the day of the auction sale after my grandfather died. My grandfather had a 5 battery flashlight which I always admired. On the day of the auction sale I asked my grandmother if I could have the flashlight and she gave it to me.
