Places of interest to visit
The Emperor Valley Zoo - Here you will find an extensive collection of local wildlife. Next to the Zoo is our botanical gardens which borders with the Presidents house.
National Museum and Art - Collections that range from the earliest Amerindian settlers to modern Carnival. 19th Century paintings by Trinidad artist Jean Michel Cazabon.
Pan yards - Several major Steel Orchestras are based in and around Port of Spain.
Fort George - On the crest of a ridge 1,100 ft. above Port of Spain, built by the British in 1804, it commanded all the approaches to the city.
Asa Wright Nature Centre - A lovely old estate house surrounded by forest and woodland. This is a conservation and study centre which caters for professional and amateur naturalists, especially birders.
Mount St. Benedict - The oldest Benedictine monastery in the Caribbean (1912).
Lopinot - Famous for its Spanish heritage and its authentic parang music. Theres a small museum in the old estate house.
Cleaver Woods - There is a small Amerindian display here as well as short walking trails.
Hollis Reservoir - Scenic lake and dam reached via Valencia through thick forest.
Arena Dam - A big reservoir that feeds much of Northern Trinidad, At the reservoir there are picnic huts with plenty scope for walking and hiking.
Caroni Bird Sanctuary - Large and famous wetland. This is the home of the Scarlet Ibis. The birds return to roost in the swamp at sunset.
Galera Lighthouse - Built in 1897, the lighthouse sits on its windy promontory above the crashing waves. This is a beautiful spot with a Family Park.
Pointe-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust - An extraordinary nature centre nestled in the grounds of the Pointe-a-Pierre oil refinery, an oasis of tranquility and beauty. The main work here is protecting endangered water fowls and other birds for reintroduction into their natural environment.
Devils Woodyard - Trinidads most accessible mud volcano. Piparo - Site of the most recent mud volcano eruption.
Navet Reservoir - Its a glorious spot, the reservoir stretching away among the hills and woodland like a vast lake, there are picnic spots and great hikes.
San Fernando Hill - The best lookout point in South Trinidad. There are spectacular views here over most of Southern and Central Trinidad.
Pitch Lake - A dark mass of imperceptibly churning natural asphalt of La Brea, feeding an endlessly replenished pool of bitumen for roads and mastic asphalt roofs. There is a small museum and site guides.
