New Hymn Books dedicated

at Fletcher Church on 21 March 1999

These books, The Celebration Hymnal - Songs and Hymns for Worship, have many of the 'good old favourites'; also a wide selection of the new 'praise and worship' choruses. Come and give them a try.
[Most Sundays there is a choir of at least ten persons.]

Pancake Supper
Held on 16 Feb.

A well-attended Pancake Supper was held and comments have been heard about how delicious the pancakes and syrup were. It was great to see so many of the community enjoying the food and the visiting. Also appreciated was the attendance of a group from a Chatham Church, accompanied by one of their pastors.

Young People's Sunday School Class

The young teen group is now covering a unit called Walking with Jesus. In the unit we are looking at four main points: Justification by Faith, A New Birth, Obedience to Jesus, and Love.
The teens are now preparing a worship service which they will offer to Jesus at sunrise this Easter Sunday on the shore of Lake Erie.

U.C.W.'s view

We meet once a month, usually the third Thursday at 1:30 and in May, September and October at 8:00 pm.
We have a worship devotion and a Study book time, right now we are reading and discussing on uprooted people, not only in far away Countries like Sudan & Kenya but also here in Canada.
Sometimes we view videos pertaining to our topic or country that we are studying about. At present we are planning a Muffin Party and bake sale.
Our meetings are followed by a lunch and social hour. Feel free to come out to any of our meetings. We would be glad to have you.
- U.C.W. Secretary, Deloris St. Peter

Jesus said: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and open the door, I will come in". It is not enough to know He stands at the door and knocks, seeking admittance. Have you opened the door and invited Him in? Have you received Him as your Saviour? Do you try to follow Him as your Lord?

Renovations on Fletcher Church took place in 1924 and re-opening services were held 25 January 1925. The building committee utilised the frame work of the old building (raising it, putting a basement under it, and extensively renovating the interior) instead of going on with plans for an entirely new church, which would have cost at least $20,000. The members of the committee were: J. H. Williams, D. Murray Fletcher, George Mancell, P. C. Stevenson, John Lecocq, George Laidlaw, William Moore, and David Fletcher.

Mid-1990's - Fletcher Church (and community) were spared the fate of a garbage dump.
Fletcher Church still exits for the worship of God and service to people.
Are you getting much out of CH__CH? CHURCH does not mean as much unless UR in it.

Merlin--Fletcher Youth Group

We're having a GREAT time at the youth group! We're learning more about how much Jesus loves us and we're having a lot of fun as we do! We've had some great chats, met some new people and watched some awesome videos (like the Jesus Film and Veggie Tales!) And stay tuned...we may get to watch more of the adventures of Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber!
If you'd like to join us any time, we'd love to have ya! The youth group meets every second Thursday at 7:00 pm at Merlin United Church. Please see Jennifer Newham, Amy Atkinson, or Dale Skipper for more info.

The Merlin/Fletcher youth group meets every other Thursday at Merlin United Church at 7:00pm. We have some evenings with as many as fourteen young people present.
Our evenings consist of group discussions, Bible study, a message from God's Word, Veggie Tale videos and a time of fellowship and treats!
All young people from Fletcher and Merlin are invited to attend. Come on out Thursday, April 1st and hear the Easter Story!

Musical Notes

Some choir members went Carolling last Christmas, accompanied by some who admit they probably can't carry a tune, except in a basket. There are those who welcome such visits; need they wait until next December? Would you like to be invited to go visiting?

Looking back in time

FLETCHER MISSION BAND
----
FLETCHER, March 6 [1935] - The monthly meeting of the King's Own Mission Band was held at the home of Mrs. John Fletcher on Saturday afternoon, March 2nd with 18 members present. The meeting was opened by the president, Florence Stevenson, with the singing of a hymn. The Bible reading was taken from Proverbs 23. The president led in prayer. While the children sang a hymn the offering was taken by Harold Fletcher.
Mrs. John Fletcher had the topic for the afternoon and gave a short talk on “Temperance.” Marguerite Moore and Margaret Allison sang a duet “Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam” which was much enjoyed.
The children then all took part in the program, each reading something relating to the needy cause of Temperance.
A jolly time was then spent by the children by “Pinning the tail on the donkey.” The boys' contest was won by Eugene Riddell and the girls' contest was won by Janet Stevenson. The hostess then served lunch. She was assisted by Miss Mary McCorvie, Mrs. Murray Fletcher and Miss May Beattie.

The Pastor's Corner

This is the first issue of the Fletcher Church and Community Newsletter. It comes at a time when we think about Easter, and spring.
"After Winter comes the spring. Once the ground was frost-bound, choked of flowers and shrubs. the singing of birds was no longer heard, and a cold silence gripped the land. But afterwards comes a new world of joy, of light and growth. The whistling of birds is heard, and flowers press up through the ground. Said the biblical prophet Isaiah:
For as the earth makes fresh things grow, as a garden makes the seeds spring up, so will the Lord God cause righteousness and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.
The world can be compared to Winter before God's coming to it in human form. His coming was like the Spring. New life was given; a light shone in the darkness; a wilderness of sin was made fertile by His grace." Maurice Nassan
I would personally like to invite you to come to Fletcher Church and take part in the Easter celebrations, beginning with a Good Friday (April 2) service at 11:00 AM. The special Easter Service (April 4) begins at 9:45. The people who regularly come to Fletcher are your neighbours who have accepted this new life that can only come from God. We all look forward to seeing you!
- Rev. Dr. Henry Marissen
