QUOTES: As the soldiers studied the partially obscured moon, they could make out a strange shape on its surface, a shape which to some took on the appearance of a scalplock.

COMMENTS: A scalplock is a rectangular shaped object (it's a scalp at the top of your head). I don't believe they would be able to detect whether the object was on the surface of the moon or in the direction of the moon.
