赤柱龍舟短途邀請賽 2002 Stanley DragonBoat Short Course Invitational

(新消息 29/1 news) On top of the regular Dragon Boat Races at the Tuen Ng Festival in June, The organiser will stage again the "Short Course Invitational" on 1 May,2003 (Labour Day Holiday). Certain teams will receive invitation soon.

本會決定再次在6月端午正日龍舟競渡以外加辦 "200米短途邀請賽"(5月1日勞動節假期)，個別受邀隊伍會收到額外資料包。

　　雖然小試牛刀，只邀請男女子共18隊，在赤柱灣 ( 遊客區對出海面 )角逐，反應熱烈，獲得各參賽隊、嘉賓及觀眾讚賞，非常成功。大家都期望日後有更多不同形式的比賽機會。

　　當日適逢天后誕，本會邀請赤柱惠善堂聯同藝群國術體育會舞動150呎長的大龍及醒獅數隻巡遊助慶兼向天后廟進香。

The Stanley Residents Association successfully staged the very smallscale Short Course Invitational on Sunday 5 May, 2002. Eighteen local and expatriate teams of men and women paddled in Stanley Bay, the less common race venue but more easily accessible for tourists of the Stanley peninsular. It met with very positive response and there exist a strong demand for more races of different style. As the event coincided with the Tin Hau Festival, we organized a Chinese style procession with performance of a large 150 feet dragon and several lions to dance along the Stanley Main Street. It was not merely a performance to cheer the crowd and the athletes, but more importantly, a tribute paid to Tin Hau and Her Temple.

The course was finally adjusted to 200 meters with only 4 lanes ( in contrast to the usual 10-lane format of the mega event in Tuen Ng Festival ) . We deployed the most streamline force of officials, but it still turned out to be undeniably a very unforgettable experience for both the participating teams and the newly involved volunteers. The start boat, a traditional Chinese sampan ( in contrast to the usual yachting start boat with a gun in Tuen Ng ), as well as the Chinese flags erected on the boat and those all along the waterfront, were simply stylish and match perfectly with the genre of the whole Festival.

The joyous faces of the paddlers, of the locals and of the tourists hinted that the dragon boat is not merely a means of sport, it is a bridge and the ambassador for cultural exchange.

為香港旅遊業及龍舟運動發展出一分力，赤柱居民聯誼會將於西曆5月5日（星期日）上午10時至下午4時自費主辦150米短途龍舟邀請賽，亦特意選擇以赤柱灣（美利樓對出海面）為賽場。當日賽會並邀請赤柱惠善堂花炮會及藝群國術體育會在比賽中段休息及典禮時段舉行「慶祝天后寶誕舞龍醒獅匯演巡遊」。

　　近年龍舟運動在海內外發展迅速，赤柱短途邀請賽乃回應各方期望在端午以外有更多比賽而出籠，只象徵式收取報名費。到時男女子分別有12及6支本地勁旅角逐，華洋薈萃。由上午10時開始初賽至下午四時最後一場決賽結束。

　　當日適逢為農曆三月廿三日天后寶誕，主辦單位特意安排在下午一時至二時之典禮休息時間，有150呎 (46米)長之大型金龍一條及醒獅數隻，配合旗隊在赤柱大街開始匯演巡遊至有數百年歷史之赤柱天后古廟，令民族特色濃厚但已日漸式微之赤柱天后誕出巡節慶得以復興。全日活動由赤柱居民聯誼會自發籌辦，旨在以民間力量為本港旅遊業打氣。

進一步為遊人提供娛樂，4時半至6 時赤柱明愛將安排青少年歌舞表演。

Stanley Dragon Boat Short Course Invitational
Cum Tin Hau's Birthday Dragon/Lion Dance Parade

To promote tourism and the sport of dragonboating, the Stanley Residents Association will stage a Short Course Invitational Dragon Boat Races on Sunday 5th May, 2002. The organiser intentionally choose Stanley Bay ( in front of Murray House ) as the venue, and and invites martial arts troupes to perform a parade with a 150 feet (46 meter) large size dragon dance accompanied by several Chinese "lions " and a team of Chinese flags in Stanley Main Street to commemorate the Birthday of the fishermen's (patron saint) Goddess Tin Hau.

Dragon Boat as a sport has been developing rapidly all over the world. The Stanley Short Course Invitational is a response to public desire for more races apart from those usually only held during the Tuen Ng Festival day in June. This time on 5th May, with minimal entry fee,12 Men's and 6 Ladies teams will compete from 10 am to 4pm in a 150-meter course. East will meet the west and close finishes are expected.

Such renaisance of folklore of the dwindling traditional Chinese style festival parade of lion dance and dragon dance will start, during the race lunch break and Opening Ceremony time slot (from 1pm to 2 pm), at the heart of Stanley Market all the way to the ancient Tin Hau Temple which is now adjacent to the modern Stanley Plaza. The parade used to be a very important day for Stanley's residents in the old day. The sole organizer, the Stanley Residents Assn, though receive no government funding for the activity, also aim at cheering up the tourist industry in her capacity as an Stanley-based NGO.

To provide visitors with more entertainment, youth performance of singing and dance will act as finale for the event after price presentation at 4:30 and carry on till 6:00pm.
