DISCO UNIVERSE HOME PAGE
DISCO is a dance style that became popular during the late 60's and
well into the 70's. DISCO was not only a dance, it was a music, a fashion,
and a lifestyle. Many people say that DISCO is dead. But I believe it's
stayin alive.
There are many symbols associated with DISCO. First, the DISCO clubs.
These clubs always had a big dance floor, and the floor, along with all the
rest of the club, had lights inside of it. A very popular symbol of the
DISCO era is the DISCO ball. Every club had at least one of these revolving,
sparkling balls hanging from the ceiling.
Along with DISCO came the new wave of fashion. Men's shirts were always made of polyester, and had outrageously large collars. These shirts were full of bright colors orthey had pictures of people or maybe designs on them. These shirts were never buttoned up. No,no! It was essential that all men had to expose as much chest hair as possible without being too vulgar. The hair was
always slicked back, and many people wore big gold chains.
Of course, you can't dance without music. DISCO music is mostly danced
to a 4/4 beat. The steps are simple because there is no fixed routine, only
different moves and styles. This is a very social dance because it's easy
to have a conversation while dancing. There are many famous DISCO bands.
Some of my favorites are the BEEGEES,
There were a lot of movies made about the DISCO era, and without doubt
the best every made was SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER starring JOHN TRAVOLTA. If you
want to see a movie that gives the complete DISCO experience, this is it.
Many people say that DISCO is dead. However, I think it is making a
comeback. Some modern musicians are incorporating the DISCO beat into their
music. One example is Wyclef and the REFUGGES' remake of STAYIN ALIVE,
originally recorded by the BEEGEES.
