Mickey's Magic Kingdom Tour through Time
1971
Hi Folks, this is Adam, your tour guide! Before we get started I'll tell you a letter history about The Magic Kingdom (MK). MK opened October 1, 1971 and has been running everyday of the year ever since. The Magic kingdom took 2 years to build and Walt disney had been planning on it ever since he saw all the cheap enertaiment businesses that surrounded Disneyland in California. Although Walt never got to see Walt Disney World, he had picked the location and was well in the planning process. Walt Disney died in '67, 4 years before the Walt disney World Resort opened with the Magic Kingdom. The Magic Kingdom is very similiar to Disneyland but in many ways different. The Walt Disney world Resort was originally just going to be called Disney World. But not too long before opening, Walt's brother Roy, changed it in memory of his brother.
When the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971, it had the following attractions:
Main Street U.S.A.
- Walt Disney World Railroad Station

*=Attraction is now gone or has been updated so that attraction is pretty much a different ride or show
Well, now that we know what was in the park in the year of '71 we can talk more about it. The first thing you see as you enter the park is the beautiful Main Street U.S.A. Main Street is based on small American Turn-of-the-Century Town, not neccesarily any one in paticular. Such things you may remeber that are now gone is the Penny Arcade, House of Magic, and the omnibus. The Omnibus was replaced by "Horseless Carriages" about 10 years later. As you walk down Main Street, look at the second story of the building and you'll see names and the businesses they run. The businesses are fake but the people are real. Walt Disney's name faces Cinderella Castle above the Ice Cream Parlor. The Main Street Cinema used to be just a quiet place to watch Mickey's early movies. But it was recently changed into a shop. The name still remains and you can still see movies there.
Adventureland was based on a Disney/ABC show called Walt Disney's Truelife Adventures. Adventureland is no where in paticular but it is in everywhere wild animals live. The Tropical Serenade (Enchanted tiki Room) closed in 1997. It has been updated now and the original songs are all but forgotten. The Jungle Cruise and Swiss Family Tree House have been enertaining guest ever since they opened in 1971! The Swiss Family Tree House has 1,400 branches, 300,000 artificial leaves, and it weighs 200 tons!
Frontierland, the old west, is the home of Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Tom Saywer Island. But when it opened it had none of these attractions. The Country Bear Jamboree, has 20 audio-animatronics and the show changes seasonally. The Diamond Horseshoe Saloonn Revue was an old west dinner show. It ran for exactly 15 years, it was then changed to the Diamond Horseshoe Jamboree. The Davy Crockett Canoes is also another attraction that is now gone. 12 Guests (and 2 Cast members) could fit on each canoe as they paddle through the Rivers of America. Mike Fink Keelboats still roam The Rivers of America today. There is two boats. Each have there own name, the Gullywhumper and the Bertha Mae.
Walt Disney probaly created Liberty Sqaure for his love of America. At The Hall of Presidents you can see every Presidents of the United States since 1776, all audio animatronics that is. When this attration opened Abraham Lincoln was the only president to speak while the others listened and looked around. Now, Bill Clinton also has a speaking part. Bill Clinton's actual voice was used for the recording. The Haunted Mansion also opened in Liberty Sqaure and has been a bone-chilling hit ever since! Also worth mentioning is the Liberty Tree. This tree was found on the wdw property, it is said to be over 100 years old. Disney re-planted it in Liberty Sqaure.
Fantasyland is for the young and young at heart, Fantasyland's small atrractions are some of the most popular in the park. If your going from Main Street to Fantasyland then you'll enter through Cinderella Castle. The Castle is double the size of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Inside of the Castle is a mosaic mural of the story of Cinderella. It features 500 colors including 14 karat-gold and real silver. Tokyo Disneyland also built a Cinderella Castle in 1983, it looks very similiar to Walt Disney World's version. As pass through the castle you'll see Cinderella's Golden Carrousel, which is over 80 years old. Disney has refurbished the ride twice that they found in Maplewood, New Jersey. If you notice it, no two horses are the same. The Mickey Mouse Revue, which is now in Toyko Disneyland, feautured many of the favorite Disney characters all in a musical orchesta. Dumbo, the Flying Elephant, takes the kids up in the air on an elephants back. In the middle of the flying elephants is Timothy Mouse, not Mickey! The Mad Tea Party re-creates the scene from Alice in Wonderland. The cups spin in a big circle and you have the choice of spinning while your spinning, confusing? dizzy? You deicde when you get there! Hop on a "flying pirate ship" and join Peter Pan, Wendy, and Tinkerbell through an adventure from the night lights of London to the gilmmering of tinker-dust in Neverland! The atrraction is still one of the busiest in Fantasyland. Snow White's Scary Adventures seemed to be too dark for the young children so 4 years ago they changed it to Snow White's Adventures, which is not as scary. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride took guests through the winding road of Mr. J. Thaudeus Toad, the attraction recently closed last September. It's a Small World originally opened at the New York's World Fair where Walt Disney was testing his new ideas for attractions. It was later moved to Disneyland, Magic Kingdom recreated the ride in there park but one thing remains missing. The huge entrance the Disneyland had to It's a Small World. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea closed in 1994, the subs never actually went fully under water. It created the illusion by shooting bubbles by the window or entering the dark cave which made it appear as though you wear deep in the depths of the ocean where no sunlight crept trough. All the submarines were built in Tampa, Florida. The Skyway, which is now gone in Disneyland, still send guests through a scenic trip to Tomorrowland.
Tomorrowland took you to the future, that never became the future. It was updated in 1994 to create a sci-fi look. The Grand Prix Raceway later changed it's name to Tomorrowland Raceway, no changes were made in the ride. In Disneyland, the ride is called Autopia. Disneyland's Autopia is being updated with a new look, it will even have a new preshow. Flight to the Moon took guests to the Moon until it was later changed to Mission to Mars. Now the attraction is Alien Encounter. ONe thing to notice is, if you ever rode Flight to the Moon or Mission to Mars then you'll see that they still use pretty much the same room. The seats all still forms a circle in 3 rows. America The Beautiful later changed to American Journeys. Both were Circle Vision Films that took you across our beautiful country. The theater remains, now Timekeeper.
1970's
Throughout the rest of the 70's came many more additions. The following attractions and parades opened from 1972-1979:
Main Street
- The Walt Disney Story*
- Swan Boats*
Frontierland
- Tom Saywer Island
- Steamboat
Adventureland
Tomorrowland*
- If You Had Wings*
- General Electric's Carousel of Progress*
- Star Jets*
- WEDway People Mover*
- Space Mountain
Parades/Events
- Happy Easter Parade
- America on Parade*
- Main Street Electrical Parade*
- Mickey's 50th Birthday Celebration*
Main Street got two new additions in the 1972. Both of those are now discontinued but will forever have a place in Disney history. First, let's start with the Walt Disney Story. This attraction which is still in Disneyland was sort of a museum that took a look at Walt's life. It included replicas of Walt's officies and much more memorbrillia. Second is the Swan Boats. The boats departed from a dock and took you for a circle tour of trhe Magic Kingdom. You can still see the river the swan boats traveled through. The Swan Boats closed 1983.
In 1973, Adventureland added the famous Pirates of the Caribbean. The boat ride takes you in an adventure back in time to a Caribbean town where pirates are invading! The humorous atttraction contains many Audio-Animatronics as they sing the tune of Yo ho, Yo ho A Pirates Life for Me! Don't forget to listen to the pirate bird in the entrance of the ride.
Also in 1973, Tom Saywer Island opened. This islands is surrounded by the Rivers of America in Frontierland. Rafts are the only way to get to the island, then you must find your way to Fort Clemens. Along the way you might come across caves, bridges, air guns and much more! The Steamboat was added two years later.
1972 brough two more attractions to Tomorrowland, If you had wings and General Electric's Carousel of Progress. If you had Wings was sponsored by Eastern Airlines which later dropped sponsor ship so Delta came along and kind of changed the attraction. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger spin recently replaced Delta's Take Flight. Much like It's a Small World, Carousel of Progresswas originally at New York's 1964 World's Fair, it was later moved to Disneyland then it was finally moved to the Magic kingdom. When Walt Disney World took it they changed the theme song from "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" to "The Best Time of Your Life". When General Electric stop sponsoring the name changed and the original song returned. In 1974, the Star Jets opened. These white "space crafts" circled a bigger ship which was supposedly docked. The attraction was later updated but the idea is still the same. In 1975, The WEDway People Mover still enertains guests today but with a different name. The people mover took you through a tour of Tomorrowland. That same year, Space Mountain opened. Space Mountain is only10 feet shorter than the nearby Cinderella Castle. If your coming from the Contemporary that's probaly the first thing you'll see. The roller coaster ride is in-the-dark but has no upside-down loops. The vehicles go only 26 miles per hour but the dark surrounding makes it seem faster.
The Happy Easter Parade sarted in 1972, ever since it has been broadcasted on ABC every Easter Sunday. America on Parade celebrated America's two hundred birthday from 1975-1977! Probaly one of the most famous Magic Kingdom parades was the Main Street Electric Parade. This night-time parade ran from 1977 to 1991. It contained over a million lights and now the parade is at Disneyland Paris. The Main Street Electrical Parade will be returning to the Magic Kingdom March 28, 1999. A year after the MSEP debuted Mickey's 50th Birthday Celebration began. Mickey and Minnie made there way down Main Street in a parade then they entered the World Premiere of Steamboat Willie at the Main Street Cinema. The parade ended a year after.
The 1980's was a great decade for Walt Disney World! Epcot Center and Disney/MGM Studios joined the theme-park lineup and Typhoon Lagoon towered over River Country. Pleasure Island and many more resorts also joined the party. And Magic Kingdom had many more parades but only two more attractions!
Frontierland
- Big Thunder Mountain
Tomorrowland
- Delta's Dream Flight/Take Flight
Mickey's Birthdayland*
Mickey's Starland*
Parades/Events
- Tencennial Celebration*
- Mickey's 60th Birthday Celebration*
- Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade
- Donald Duck's 50th Birthday Parade*
- 15th Anniversary Celebration*
- Disney Character Hit Parade*
Big Thunder Mountain opened in 1980 at Frontierland. Just 5 years after Space Mountain opened. It cost more to build Big Thunder Mountain in WDW than it originally cost to build Disneyland Park in 1955!
Delta's Dream Flight was later changed to Take Flight. The ride recieved no changes, it was just that Delta stop sponsoring the ride. Take Flight recently closed to make way for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin!
Mickey's Birthdayland was built to celebrate Mickey's 60th Birthday! There was many activities including Mickey's house! You could also watch Mickey's Birthday as his freinds tried to give hime a suprise party. You could also take a look at one of the most famous hidden mickeys of all-time, Minnie-Moo! You can now see Minnie-Moo at the Ft. Wilderness and Camp Ground. Later on, the name was changed to Mickey's Starland, no serious changes were made. Just the name because Mickey's birthday was over.
The 1980's had so many parades it would fill up this page if I discussed them all!
1990-1994:
Tomorrowland*
- Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress
Frontierland
Fantasyland
- Snow White's Adventures
- The Legend of the Lion King
- Sword in the Stone
Parades/Events
- Spectromagic Parade
- 20th Anniversary Celebration Parade*
- Mickey Mania Parade*
In 1992, Splash Mountain instantly became a Splash hit in Frontierland! The first day it opened it was raining, but the rain wasn't the only thing getting people wet. The ride is based on the Disney movie, "Song of the South". It contains the famous song "Zip-dee-doo-da" and many other tunes that will be stuck in your heads for weeks.
Snow White's Scary Adventures changed it's name to Snow White's Adventures in 1994. They tried to lighten up the ride but the ride still contains many scenes with the queen/witch. Also, in '94 came the puppet show, Legend of the Lion King. The show contains music from the movie and they act some of the scenes with the puppets. A year before these two attractions in 1993, The Sword in the Stone made a debut in front of the Carousel in Fantasyland. Remeber, no one can actually get it out unless the wizard magically finds the future king or queen for the day. The wizard shows up throughout the day.
In 1991, SpectroMagic moved in and the Main Street Electric Parade moved out. SpectroMagic was similiar but many miss the ol' Main Street Electric Parade. So that's why the MSEP is coming back this May and I also heard that SprectoMagic will also be running!
1995-Present, the last few years have seen two new lands in the Magic Kingdom and two old lands long gone. The Magic Kingdom also changed it's castle to a birthday cake for it's 25th Birthday! Yes sir, the last few years have had a big change on the park we know and love to know.
New Tomorrowland
- The ExtraTERROReastial Alien Encounter
- The Timekeeper
- Astro Orbiter
- Tomorrowland Transit Authority
- Tomorrowland Speedway
- Galaxy Palace Theater
Mickey's Toontown Fair
Parades/Events
- 25th Anniversary Celebration*
In 1995, Tomorrowland changed to new Tomorrowland. Disney and most visitors started thinking Tomorrowland was becoming a bit outdated. Tomorowland concentrated on the future to come (and did come). Now, New Tomorrowland shows you the future that never was. The land is based on science fiction novels and old movies. Alien Encounter is not a ride, more like a show and ride mixed. You don't move but you expeirence an alien attack without actually seeing the alien around you. Many special effects were done by George Lucas and the Disney Imagineers in this ride. The old Star Jets were replaced by the Astro-Orbiter. Instead of sleek white crafts, you ride vehicles that look more like toy rockets than real ones. There was also planets added (don't worry, they're out of your way!!). The Timekeeper is hosted by two audio-animatronics. You may notice Robin William's voice as the timekeeper and Jeremy Irons as the author H.G. Wells. This attraction combines live audio-animatronics and a circle vision theatre for a absolute great ride, I mean show. The Galaxy palace theater is home to Galaxy Search. Where Mickey & Freinds try to find the most talented alien in the galaxy. Grand Prix Raceway and the WEDway People mover were renamed fore the new tomorrowland.
Mickey's Toontown Fair replaced Mickey's Starland in 1996. Such attractions include Goofy's rollercoaster the Barnstormer, Donald's boat, Mickey's house, toontown fair (character meeting place), and the Toontown Train Station.
The 25th anniversary celebration had to be Disney's best celebration yet. With the debut of the Msgical Moments Parade which is still running today and the makeover of Cinderella Castle. Cinderella Castle was made into a Birthday cake, and probaly one of the biggest in history! After the celebration Cinderella Castle was restored and a new lighting system was added.
The Future looks good for Disney's Magic Kingdom. With 3 other Disney parks, 3 water parks, and around 20 resorts, MK is booming! 2000 and the years to come should be great for the original Walt Disney World park. Below is some of the attractions I know for sure are on there way!
Fantasyland
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Parades/Events
- The Original DisneylandŽ Main Street Electrical Parade
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is scheduled to open Summer of this year. In order for this attraction to open, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride had to close last September.
Yes, it's ture. The Main Street Electric Parade is making it's way down Main Street U.S.A. in Florida's MAgic Kingdom. It's been eight long years but now it's finally back. Hope to see you and myself all there!
Thank you for taking this Tour Through Time at the Magic Kingdom.
