Zac explains his point of view to
Ike (background) and Taylor (out of shot) during
the recording of 'This Time Around' |
Zachary Walker Hanson Of the three Hanson
brothers, Zac has undergone the biggest change in
the past couple of years, so here is a
now-and-then comparison of Zac bio's...
1997
The youngest of the three brothers, Zac
is perhaps inevitably the wacky, mischievous side
of the band. The most visual speaker of the
three, Zac expresses everything he talks about
with grand gestures, often scattered with
outrageous sound-effects and anything else he
feels would help to get his point across.
Zac's attitude often puts him in the best
position of the three brothers to field the
questions the uncaring and often insensitive
music press fire at the band (witness the band's
constant grilling from the 'adult' music press
when they first came on the scene) - when asked
about subjects like hair ("hair is
hair"), Zac takes least offence and often
has something equally witty to retort with.
This care-free attitude sometimes gets the
youngest Hanson into tight-spots however. Not
only does he often end up 'annoying' his
brothers, but the list of celebrities he has
offended seems to grow every day. When backstage
at a gig, Zac ran into Huey from the Fun Lovin'
Criminals. Zac noticed Huey was smoking, in a
no-smoking area, and told him so. Huey has since
confided that 'it's not love. A lot of people
think it's love, y'know, I find his number, call
him up..." - a reference to the much-fabled
groupie-dom that surrounds the Hanson experience.

Whereas other might take
these asides personally, however, Zac is able to
shrug them off with ease. And somewhere in all of
this is the fact that Zac is a great drummer,
improving all the time, as well as possessing a
high voice that perfectly compliments Hanson's
three-part harmony style. Zac rarely takes lead
vocals, but exceptions include 'Lucy' and 'Man
From Milwaukee' (more of an ensemble piece, but
wherever there is only one person singing it's
usually Zac) on the thirteen-times platinum
'Middle Of Nowhere' album.
Zac's duties on the drums rested solely on his
shoulders for the band's early albums, but for
the recording of 'Middle Of Nowhere' he had
assisstants to fill in when he'd had enough -
only 11 at the time of recording, it's rumoured
Zac's wrists weren't strong enough to maintain
the schedule, though whether this is true or not
is unclear. Taylor and Isaac both had similar
assisstants to fill in on their respective
instruments.
2000
With a great deal of physical growth
under his belt, Zac is at times a much quieter
character than before - but don't believe a word
of it, because Zac is still perfectly capable of
showing the wacky and at times bizarre/surreal
sense of humour that earned him the reputation of
the Hanson wildcard (and a kiss of Jenny McCarthy
to boot). Zac's drumming is now a sight to behold
- and he can definitely hold his own in the
studio thankyouverymuch!
