1990 Ford Mustang 4 Cylinder Derby Car

My derby pal Hugh Hunter knew someone who was getting a new car and needed to get rid of this Mustang as they were moving from Barrie. It's a 5spd (first for me in a derby car anyway). I've seen these Mustangs do great in derbies. After stripping the car out I found a little more rust than I would have liked to have found. After cleaning up the factory wiring and cutting the exhaust off, the car just didn't see to run as good anymore. Was really idling rough and was producing a lot of blue (oil) smoke out the exhaust. Took the car anyway because it seemed to clear up once the car ran for a while. Gave it a quickie paint job the day of the derby. I notched the rear uni-body frame rails and pre-bent the back slightly upwards to prevent the car from going down. Unfortunately I got hit in the heat by a Topaz that was already grading the track so the back end went down anyway. My other derby pal Maris beat me for first place in the heat (front tie-rod was busted on the passenger side so I got stuck in the sand). Got it back together for the feature just in the nick of time (thanks Chuck!) as we just used a bunch of wire to hold the front tire straight. Went out in the feature with a car I knew was hurting pretty badly. I got turned sideways and got stuck again and took a good hard hit in the driver's side door post from John Irish (Twin). The steering wheel shifted at least 5" to the right and slammed it into my hand, which was on the manual transmission shifter. Had a good bruise on my wrist bone area for a few days afterwards. The hit folded the brake pedal over top of the gas pedal too. It was a perfectly legal hit so I place no blame, nor are there any hard feelings (I hope John knows that too!). Ended up 6th in the feature. Won $50 for the heat and got a trophy for the collection.
