''Self-confidence leads to self-sacrifice which leads to self-realisation. So be confident of achieving your goal in life, speak truth and follow righteous path.''

``Whatever education you have and position you hold in society, if you do not have truthfulness, righteousness, peace, and love in your daily life it's all a waste. Without these qualities human life will collapse'' -- Sathya Sai Baba, November 23, 2003

Earlier, addressing the gathering, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice P.N. Bhagawati, described Baba as Rama, Krishna and Jesus.

``There is no greater teacher on this earth than Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who was the main force behind the transformation of human beings,'' he said.

Don't give up faith in God, Baba tells people

PUTTAPARTHI: Sri Sathya Sai Baba on Sunday advised people to lead a righteous and meaningful life and not to give up their faith in God.

Addressing a huge gathering on the occasion of his 78th birthday celebrations here at Prashanthi Nilayam, Baba said human life depends on the four qualities of truth, righteousness, peace and love.

``Whatever education you have and position you hold in society, if you do not have truthfulness, righteousness, peace, and love in your daily life it's all a waste. Without these qualities human life will collapse,'' he said.

Emphasising the importance of guidance by parents for children to make them better citizens, Baba said Putali Bai never hesitated to punish Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi for his mistakes.

``Queen Kausalya had played a very important role in moulding Lord Rama's life. If there was no Kausalya, then there would have been no Rama. Sita infused courage and valour in her children Lava and Kush."

``Like that, without my mother Eswaramma's contribution I wouldn't have been able to stand amidst all of you. All of you praise me but forget my mother's hardships and contribution in moulding my life when I was a child,'' he said.

``A child's lifestyle depends on the quality life of his parents. All our ancestors used to perform pujas for God's benevolence. My mother, along with her neighbour Karanam Subbamma, used to perform Satyanarayana puja. It was Subbamma who advised my mother to give me the name `Satyanarayana','' Baba said.

Recalling his childhood, he remembered how his brother and relatives had misgivings about his behaviour. ``They thought that an evil spirit had possessed me. When they realised my power, people started bringing sick people to me for treatment. While some people attempted to poison me, a few others set my thatched hut on fire, but nothing happened to me,'' he said.

Baba said he was born at 3 a.m. and that his behaviour puzzled obstetricians. ``I was laughing instead of crying when I was born which was unusual,'' he said.

Assuring that no devotee would suffer if he enters Prashanthi Nilayam, Baba said, ``I will protect my devotees and do the needful whenever they are in trouble.''

Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna also attended the function along with his wife, daughter and grand-children. Union Minister of State for Home I.D. Swamy and well-known playback singer of yesteryears P. Susheela were present among the prominent personalities.

Baba, who came on a electric car followed by a singing troupe, blessed the gathering.

Saibaba preaches qualities for meaningful life

By Our Staff Reporter

PUTTAPARTHI Nov. 23. Life without `satyam (truth), dharmam (eternal law), prema (love) and shanti (peace)' is hollow and it will collapse without these four qualities, the Puttaparthi-based spiritual icon, Satya Saibaba, has observed. Man is able to survive only by following these vital characters, he said.

In his discourse to a large gathering of devotees at Sai Kulwanth Hall in Prashanti Nilayam here today on the occasion of his 78th birthday Saibaba said education without these ideals was empty and had no value. He expressed concern at the increasing trend of neglecting parents by man. Explaining that great personalities like Ram and Shivaji could become the role models due to the qualities of their parents, particularly the upbringing by their mothers. But, people were neglecting their parents nowadays, he noted. Whatever a person would become in his/her life was based on their parents' qualities.

Instead of the parents guiding their children the society of the day was witnessing a role reversal -- parents were fearing their children, Saibaba stated. He took more than an hour to explain about his mother, Eeswaramma, his birth, his growth and the divine incidents that had taken place in his childhood.

Saibaba said several persons were trying to claim themselves as the avatar of Sai including one at Penukonda and another one by sporting a similar hair style to his hair. Though they were claiming themselves as Saibaba the people were not believing them as they were not real Saibaba. He would not leave Puttaparthi as long as his physical appearance was there on the earth.

Asking the devotees to never give up faith in the god Saibaba said, "Sai is you and you are Sai''. In the latter part of his speech Saibaba explained about the persons who devoted themselves to Sai and lived more than 100 years. Saibaba was in a joyous mood through his stay in the Sai Kulwanth Hall. Unlike in the past he went round the hall blessing the devotees twice. He was offered `harati' (a prayer with lamps) by several woman devotees in the beginning and by the seva dal members at the end. In the evening, renowned singers Parveen Sultana and Dana Gillespie enthralled the gathering with their vocal concerts.

Learn love and earn morality, says Sai Baba

Sunday November 23 2003 09:41 IST

PUTTAPARTHI : Sri Sathya Sai Baba on Saturday called upon students to be an embodiment of love and not become selfish after completing their education.

Addressing the 22nd convocation of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning here, Baba said: ''Selfishness is like a fish in the water. The fish dies when it was taken out of the water. So do not become selfish; render selfless service to society.''

Exhorting students not to live for money, Baba advised them to earn morality. ''If money comes it goes but if you earn morality it never goes but grows. You will become true Indian when you have morality. You should realise that education is not to earn money because money ruins your peace. You should work for the welfare of needy people and strive hard to retain and preserve Indian culture. Well-known singer M.S. Subbalakshmi never sang for money but to earn name and fame,'' Baba said.

Urging students to be self-confident, Baba said: ''Self-confidence leads to self-sacrifice which leads to self-realisation. So be confident of achieving your goal in life, speak truth and follow righteous path.''

Baba said students should not misinterprete the meaning of love. ''Love never destroys anyone but helps needy people. Love is God. You live in God, who is in your heart.''

He said many students forget to remember their motherland soon after landing in a foreign country. ''Bharath is known for knowledge and sacrifice. You should not forget your motherland which is like your mother. Can anyone forget his own mother? Be a true and pround son of Bharath.''

Earlier, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat appreciated the service of Sathya Sai Seva Samithi in providing drinking water to 700 villages in Anantapur district. ''I wish religious organisations derive inspiration from Baba and in addition to spiritual uplift, also work for amelioration of the poor, the hungry and the sick,'' he said.

The vice-president said India is proud of its ancient civilisation and rich cultural heritage. ''Diversities provide unique richness and varied flavours. Diverse social groups co-exist in harmony, always guided by the most secular ethos embodied in ancient axiom of 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam','' he said.
