2 CONC marriage working in a Barrell factory.  ?  Worked at a bomb factory in 
2 CONC Grand Island, NE during WWII (was a member of the Military Police at the 
2 CONC bomb depot - Ammunition Depot, Grand Island, NE.]  Was very upset when 
2 CONC not accepted for military service due to bleeding stomach ulcers and flat 
2 CONC feet.  Worked at the Meston Ford Dealership in Broken Bow, NE.  Started 
2 CONC as a salesman, then the Sales Manager (won a car) and eventually became 
2 CONC the 'Acting' Manager.  He was a member of the Elks Club in Broken Bow, 
2 CONC NE.  Deacon and then Elder of the 1st Christian Church of Broken Bow, NE 
2 CONC (Disciples of Christ).  Loren O. Williams was Initiated to the Masonic 
2 CONC Temple October 10, 1951 and was Passed on November 21, 1951 and Raised on 
2 CONC January 9, 1952.  This was the Masonic Temple in Broken Bow, NE.  Master: 
2 CONC  Orvis M. Meston.  He became a trouble shooter for the Ford Company and 
2 CONC moved his family to Lexington, NE.  Was then a shoe salesman in Alliance, 
2 CONC NE.  Daddy and Mother sold all (or most) of their furniture and moved to 
2 CONC Lincoln, NE where he sold insurance for a while.  He then became a guard 
2 CONC at the NE State Pen in Lincoln, NE and told me (Vicky L. Williams 
2 CONC Winfield) once that he had finally found his calling from God - 
2 CONC counseling young men coming through the State Pen.  He had always wished 
2 CONC to be a minister.  (most of the above information was obtained orally 
2 CONC from Laura Elenor Jones Williams Hockman - the rest is from my memories)

2 CONT      Obituary of Loren Williams," December 1964, Loren O. Williams was 
2 CONC born at Burwell on July 16, 1913, to the late Bert and Nora Williams of 
2 CONC Ansley.  He died Dec. 22, 1964, at the age of 51 years.  Loren grew up on 
2 CONC a farm near Ansley.  He graduated from Ansley high school in 1935.  On 
2 CONC June 23, 1940, he was united in marriage to Laura Elenor Jones.  To this 
2 CONC union were born three daughters.  The famly resided in North Platte for a 
2 CONC short time; however, most of Loren's married life was spent in Broken 
2 CONC Bow.  There he was employed as the sales manager for the Meston Motor Co. 
2 CONC  While living in Broken Bow, Loren became a memer of the First Christian 
2 CONC Church and he served it in many ways.  He was a member of the Emmet 
2 CONC Crawford Masonic lodge No. 148 and served as the Associate Guardian of 
2 CONC Jobs Daughters Bethel No. 20.  In 1961 the family moved to Alliance where 
2 CONC they resided for a period of two years.  In June 1963, they moved to 
2 CONC Lincoln where they were living at the time of his death.  In Lincoln, he 
2 CONC was employed at the State Penal Institution as an officer in the 
2 CONC Reception Dorm.  This work was of a social nature and he enjoyed it very 
2 CONC much.  He transferred his membership to Bethany Christian church in 
2 CONC Lincoln and continued in his service to the church.  His survivors 
2 CONC include his wife, Elenor; daughters, Mrs. Sharon Sutton of Bristol, Va., 
2 CONC Mrs. Carol Liggett of Lincoln, Miss Vicky Williams, residing at home; 
2 CONC sisters, Mrs. Williams Ferguson of Baker, Ore., Mrs. Louis Kaelin of 
2 CONC Ansley, Mrs. Robert Sheehan of Grand Island;  brothers, Glen C. Williams 
2 CONC of Hastings, Dale D. Williams of Grand Island; many nieces and nephews 
2 CONC and a host of other relatives and friends.  Preceding him in death were 
2 CONC his parents and one brother.

2 CONT I remember him as a kind and gentle man who read pulp Westerns, listened 
2 CONC to radio programs and loved to tell me stories about the family - where 
2 CONC they came from and what happened to them.  There is an element of truth 
2 CONC in the stories he told me when you consider what may or may not have 
2 CONC happened to the relatives of Michael Farrell and Laura Jane House. 
2 CONC Grandpa Alfred Jones could have been telling me about the the 
2 CONC Farrell's/House's and in my tender youth (about 5) I didn't understand 
2 CONC and thought he was speaking of himself & My Great Aunt Glady's.  One of 
2 CONC the reasons for this research is to determine the origins of this story 
2 CONC and to find out who Nellie Bell (Farrell) Jones' family were as I do not 
2 CONC EVER recall meeting or hearing about any of them.  He also used to tell 
2 CONC me there were relatives in the Civil War and in the Revolutionary War ---

2 CONT When three weeks of age Nellie came to Nebraska in a covered wagon. Her 
2 CONC parents settled on Clear Creak, homesteaded and are buried in the Clear 
2 CONC Creek cemetery.  There is a cemetery and a church there.  My grandfather 
2 CONC built a sod house for them to live in.  Mom went to a one room school 
2 CONC house not far from the house.  The Christian Church was also close by and 
2 CONC her mother (my grandmother) was very active in it.  My mom and dad met 
2 CONC while he was working for a neighbor of my grandfather.  They married

2 CONT She was a housewife, farm-wife, Mother and Grand-mother.  Nellie was also

2 CONT      Bradford "Grandpa" House, whose ancestors came from England and 
2 CONC Scotland, was born in New York State August 8, 1827.  November 16, 1851 
2 CONC he was married to Sarah McGinnis in Joe Davis Co., Illinois.  She was the 
2 CONC daughter of Francis and Jane McGinnis and was born October 10, 1834, 
2 CONC their descendants (sic) [might mean ancestors] were from Ireland.  They 
2 CONC lived their early married life in Illinois where all of their children 
2 CONC were born.  "Grandpa" House preceded his family to Custer County, 
2 CONC Nebraska to homestead, but he soon returned to Adrain Co., Missouri, 
2 CONC where the family had lived for some time, to bring his family to Nebraska 
2 CONC in 1886.  When they first moved into Ansley they lived directly north of 
2 CONC the Christian Church.  They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley.  
2 CONC The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from 
2 CONC the Lumber Yard.   In their declining years they moved to the farm home 
2 CONC of their daughter, Della McGowan and family.  A comfortable two room 
2 CONC house was built for them in the yard next to the McGowan home, which was 
2 CONC two miles north of Ansley.  They resided there until their deaths.  
2 CONC Grandma died January 19, 1915 and Grandpa March 26, 1916.  Both were 
2 CONC buried in the Ansley Cemetery.  They were the parents of the following 
2 CONC children.
2 CONT      LAURA (1852-1930) married Mike Farrell in the early 1870's.  She 
2 CONC died at her home near Westerville and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery 
2 CONC northeast of Ansley.  They were the parents of:  [1] Mae (Mrs. Edgar 
2 CONC Graham) they lived in Ansley Community where their four children, Irma, 
2 CONC Norman, Irene and Mildred were born.  Later they moved to a farm a few 
2 CONC miles northeast of Broken Bow.  [2] Bert F. (1875-1957) married Nellie 
2 CONC Potts in 1900.  They had a daughter, Clatilla, Mrs. Paul Siegel, who 
2 CONC resides in Central City, Nebraska.  Bert worked many years for the Brown 
2 CONC Fruit Co.  Both Bert and Nellie are buried at Central City, Nebraska.  
2 CONC [3] Sadie (1877-1962) married Bert Marsh of Westerville Community.  They 
2 CONC were blessed with three children:  Cecil (who is deceased, Floreine (Mrs. 
2 CONC John Campbell) and Irma (Mrs. Charles Bensen) who both live in Laramie, 
2 CONC Wyoming.  [4] Ervin "Ervie" (1880-1965) married Lizzie Mytton of rural 
2 CONC Ansley.  A son, Leo, was born to them.  [5] Nellie (1884-1920's?) (sic) 
2 CONC [should be 1884-1961] married Alfred Jones in 1904.  Their children were 
2 CONC Melvin (who died in infancy), Ruby (Mrs. David Anderson), Merle (deceased 
2 CONC in 1963), Faye (Mrs. Charles Boyd) and Laura Eleanor (sic) [should be 
2 CONC Elenor] (Mrs. Loren Williams.  [6] Levert Farrell 1885, who makes his 
2 CONC home in an Army Home in South Dakota.  [7] Laura "Totie" (1889-1918) 
2 CONC married Lee Woodruff.  They lived in Lee Park near the Knight School.

2 CONC fixing things up.  His favorite place first thing in the morning was the 
2 CONC coffee shop (cafe) - down town Edgar.  Loved listening to his stock 
2 CONC reports and farm reports on radio.  He loved the Nebraska Huskers.  
2 CONC Farmer in Clay County, Nebraska (farm originally owned by his parents but 
2 CONC he expanded it and made many improvements).  Fred was a Fifty year member 
2 CONC of the Lion's Club of Edgar, Nebraska.  Elder of 1st Christian Church of 
2 CONC Edger, Nebraska and the designer of the church building now there.  
2 CONC Believe he is also a member of Ark Sar Ben in Omaha, Nebraska (2002).

2 CONT                Edgar resident Frederick Hockman, 91, died Monday, March 
2 CONC 4, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.  Services are at 
2 CONC 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church in Edgar with the Revs. David 
2 CONC King and Harold Fox officiating.  Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery.  
2 CONC Williams Funeral Home in Edgar is in charge of arrangements.  
2 CONT                Mr. Hockman was born May 9, 1910, to Erven E. and Maude 
2 CONC (Fuhrer) Hockman at Dorchester, Nebraska. He moved with his family to 
2 CONC Davenport for one year and then to a farm three miles north of Edgar in 
2 CONC 1920.  He attended rural schools and graduated from Edgar High School in 
2 CONC 1928.  
2 CONT                On Aug. 15, 1935, he married Abbie S. Wilkins.  He farmed 
2 CONC and trucked for many years in the Edgar area.  His wife died in May 1962.

2 CONT "Last Rites for Merle D. Jones Merle Durwood Jones was born April 14, 
2 CONC 1906, at Ansley, Nebr., to Alfred and Nellie Jones and died at Geneva, 
2 CONC Nebr., on July 5, 1963 at the age of 57 years. Merle spent most of his 
2 CONC young life and early manhood around Ansley and received his education in 
2 CONC the rural schools of Custer county. He was a member of the First 
2 CONC Christian Church of Broken Bow. On May 29, 1942, he was united in 
2 CONC marriage to Roxie Tyson at Broken Bow. This union was blessed with one 
2 CONC adopted daughter, Inez Marie. Most of his married life was spent in and 
2 CONC around Broken Bow. On Feb. 6, 1961, they moved to Geneva where he was 
2 CONC employed at the Girls Training School until his final illness. Merle 
2 CONC entered the Fillmore County Hospital on July 2 and passed away July 5. He 
2 CONC leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Roxie; one daughter, Inez 
2 CONC Richards; two granddaughters, Tamra Kay and Bonita Lynn and his 
2 CONC son-in-law, Kenneth Richards of Ogallala. Among his immediate survivors 
2 CONC are his father, Alfred Jones, Broken Bow; and three sisters, Mrs. Dave 
2 CONC (Ruby) Anderson, Dunnegan Mo., Mrs. Charles (Faye) Boyd, Ansley, and Mrs. 
2 CONC Loren (Laura Elenor) Williams, Lincoln; five nieces; two nephews, and a 
2 CONC host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his 
2 CONC mother, Nellie Belle Jones and an infant brother, Melvin. Funeral 
2 CONC services were conducted........."   NOTE:  The rest was cut off.  Found

2 CONT     Mrs. David A. (Ruby) Anderson, 72, Dunnegan, died at 6:30p.m. Sunday 
2 CONC in Polk Community Hospital in Humansville after a long illness.  She was 
2 CONC a member of Fair Play Methodist Church and a resident of the Fair Play 
2 CONC and Dunnegan communities for the past 20 years.  Survivors are her 
2 CONC husband, David A., of the home; a son, Eauclair, of Kearney, Neb.; two 
2 CONC daughters, Mrs. Viloa Marlin, Marshfield, and Mrs. Nellie Mudd, of the 
2 CONC state of Oregon; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Hockman, Edgar, Neb., and Mrs. 
2 CONC Faye Boyd, Ansley, Neb.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  
2 CONC Funeral services were held Wed., March 3, 1977, in the Pitts Chapel with

2 CONC the Marshfield Cemetery under the direction of the Pitts Funeral Home of 
2 CONC Bolivar.  Escorts were Lannie Potts, Jack Williams, George Lovell,

2 CONT      I have been asked to write a story about the family of my maternal 
2 CONC grandparents. My mother has been gone almost 15 years, so I will have to 
2 CONC rely on memories of stories she told me. 
2 CONT      Her parents, Michael and Laura House Farrell, were married in 
2 CONC Illinois sometime in the early 1870's. Their two eldest children, Mae and 
2 CONC Bert, were born there. 
2 CONT      The family moved to Iowa, where my mother, Sarah, and a son, Ervin, 
2 CONC were born. 
2 CONT      From Iowa, the Farrells turned south and settled in Missouri, where 
2 CONC another child, Nellie, joined the family. When Nellie was three weeks 
2 CONC old, they began the trek by wagon train to Nebraska. Grandmother's 
2 CONC parents, Bradford and Sarah House, and their other two daughters and two 
2 CONC sons were also on this journey. 
2 CONT      The Michael Farrells settled on a homestead a few miles east and 
2 CONC south of Westerville in the Clear Creek Community. They made very few 
2 CONC trips to Ansley or Broken Bow, as Westerville was the local trading post. 
2 CONT      They built and lived in a sod house for many years.  The two 
2 CONC youngest children, Levert and I.aura, were born here.  My mother was 
2 CONC about eight years old at the time they settled here, so she spent almost 
2 CONC all of her school days in a sod schoolhouse.  I believe it was called the 
2 CONC Kimball School. 
2 CONT      Grandfather Farrell died about 1900. His grave is one of the first 
2 CONC ones in the Liberty Cemetery.  The three older children were grown and 
2 CONC gone from home at the time of his death. Mae was married to Edgar Graham, 
2 CONC and Sarah, my mother, was now Mrs. Herbert Marsh. 
2 CONT      Grandma was a very resourceful pioneer woman, and she stayed on the 
2 CONC homestead and finished raising the four younger children. She and her 
2 CONC son, Ervie, farmed together for many years. 
2 CONT      Later Ervie married Elizabeth Mytton, Nellie married Alfred Jones 
2 CONC and Laura became Mrs. Lee Woodworth. 
2 CONT      Grandma Farrell was a charter member of the Christian Church at 
2 CONC Liberty, helping to organize the church and Sunday School.  She served 
2 CONC the Church as Sunday School Superintendent for almost 30 years. 
2 CONT      It was a great joy and pleasure to visit her. When she died in 1930, 
2 CONC her children and grandchildren realized that they had lost a loving and 
2 CONC helpful friend. 
2 CONT      She is buried beside her husband just a few miles from the old 
2 CONC homestead, where they had come to make a family home in the New Land. 
2 CONT      Levert, the youngest son, and the only one of the immediate family 
2 CONC still living, resides at a Veteran's Rest Home at Rushville, Nebraska."

2 CONT      Bradford "Grandpa" House, whose ancestors came from England and 
2 CONC Scotland, was born in New York State August 8, 1827.  November 16, 1851 
2 CONC he was married to Sarah McGinnis in Joe Davis Co., Illinois.  She was the 
2 CONC daughter of Francis and Jane McGinnis and was born October 10, 1834, 
2 CONC their descendants (sic) [might mean ancestors] were from Ireland.  They 
2 CONC lived their early married life in Illinois where all of their children 
2 CONC were born.  "Grandpa" House preceded his family to Custer County, 
2 CONC Nebraska to homestead, but he soon returned to Adrain Co., Missouri, 
2 CONC where the family had lived for some time, to bring his family to Nebraska 
2 CONC in 1886.  When they first moved into Ansley they lived directly north of 
2 CONC the Christian Church.  They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley.  
2 CONC The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from 
2 CONC the Lumber Yard.   In their declining years they moved to the farm home 
2 CONC of their daughter, Della McGowan and family.  A comfortable two room 
2 CONC house was built for them in the yard next to the McGowan home, which was 
2 CONC two miles north of Ansley.  They resided there until their deaths.  
2 CONC Grandma died January 19, 1915 and Grandpa March 26, 1916.  Both were 
2 CONC buried in the Ansley Cemetery.  They were the parents of the following 
2 CONC children.
2 CONT      LAURA (1852-1930) married Mike Farrell in the early 1870's.  She 
2 CONC died at her home near Westerville and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery 
2 CONC northeast of Ansley.  They were the parents of:  [1] Mae (Mrs. Edgar 
2 CONC Graham) they lived in Ansley Community where their four children, Irma, 
2 CONC Norman, Irene and Mildred were born.  Later they moved to a farm a few 
2 CONC miles northeast of Broken Bow.  [2] Bert F. (1875-1957) married Nellie 
2 CONC Potts in 1900.  They had a daughter, Clatilla, Mrs. Paul Siegel, who 
2 CONC resides in Central City, Nebraska.  Bert worked many years for the Brown 
2 CONC Fruit Co.  Both Bert and Nellie are buried at Central City, Nebraska.  
2 CONC [3] Sadie (1877-1962) married Bert Marsh of Westerville Community.  They 
2 CONC were blessed with three children:  Cecil (who is deceased, Floreine (Mrs. 
2 CONC John Campbell) and Irma (Mrs. Charles Bensen) who both live in Laramie, 
2 CONC Wyoming.  [4] Ervin "Ervie" (1880-1965) married Lizzie Mytton of rural 
2 CONC Ansley.  A son, Leo, was born to them.  [5] Nellie (1884-1920's?) (sic) 
2 CONC [should be 1884-1961] married Alfred Jones in 1904.  Their children were

2 CONC lived somewhere near the the north side grade school in Broken Bow, 
2 CONC Custer County, Nebraska.  I have a very faint memory of visiting her on 
2 CONC the way to school or on the way home.  I attended that particular school 
2 CONC from 3rd grade thru 6th grade; so, the years would have been 
2 CONC approximately 1955-1959.  This could very well be true; as, she did not

2 CONT      It seems a long time since we left the community north of 
2 CONC Westerville. but it remains a happy interesting part of our lives. 
2 CONT      My father, Herbert (Bert) Marsh, came from England as a young lad. 
2 CONC His family first settled at Exeter, Nebraska, where Grandad, Frances 
2 CONC Marsh, had a meat market.
2 CONT      In a few years, they came on to a homestead near Clear Creek in 
2 CONC Custer County. Mother, Sarah Farrell, born in Iowa, came with her 
2 CONC parents, Michael and Laura Farrell, to a homestead nearby the Marsh 
2 CONC family. She was eight years old when this trip was made by covered wagon. 
2 CONT      Mother and Dad were married in 1897. They resided on a farm near 
2 CONC their parents for quite a few years. My brother, Cecil, was born there. 
2 CONC My younger sister, Irma, and I were born in Ansley, Nebraska. 
2 CONT      Dad purchased a farm in Cherry County, about four miles north of 
2 CONC Valentine, and we lived there until 1918. At that time they leased the 
2 CONC farm in Cherry County and we came back to Custer County. We moved to the 
2 CONC Parmenter farm, and later to the Mrs. B. J. Tierney place. We were there 
2 CONC for a number of years. My sister and I finished our school days at Dry 
2 CONC Valley High. 
2 CONT      We made many lifetime friends in this locality. The names that come 
2 CONC to my memory are: Bill and Andy AlIens, the Scott families, the 
2 CONC Garnisses, all of the Glover families, and the Carl Lecks. 
2 CONT      We were a close family unit, and it was with much sadness that we 
2 CONC lost our brother in September, 1939. In July. 1941, our dad died. Mother 
2 CONC came to Wyoming and lived with me and my husband for eight years. She has 
2 CONC been gone since 1962. They are all buried in the little country cemetery 
2 CONC near the old Liberty Church. 
2 CONT      My sister, Irma Marsh Benson, and I both live in Laramie, Wyoming. 
2 CONC However, it seems to me that our roots are firmly established in that 
2 CONC part of Nebraska. We have been away from there since the late 1930's, but 
2 CONC still speak fondly of it as "back home".
