Page 64 - 67 2 CONT "Chad Browne of Providence, R.I., And Four Generations Of His Descendants 2 CONC By William Bradford Browne of North Adams, Mass. 2 CONT Among those Rhode Island families which may almost be styled 2 CONC 'basic' in the history and genealogy of that Colony and State the Chad 2 CONC Browne family must be numbered. Spreading almost immediately to all 2 CONC parts of the Colony, it has been from the first influential in all lines 2 CONC of service, whether religious, political, or industrial. Its name is 2 CONC stamped upon a great university, and men of note have borne it proudly. 2 CONC ................ In studying the records of Rhode Island it is necessary 2 CONC to keep in mind the divisions of the towns of Providenc, Kingstown, and 2 CONC Warwick into new townships. The appearance of a family record in the new 2 CONC town does not indicate a removal from the present-day town of the 2 CONC original name, as many seem to think. Especially confusing is the fact 2 CONC that many families recorded in Rehoboth, Attlesborough, Wrentham, and 2 CONC Bellingham, Mass., appear, after the settlement of the Colony boundary, 2 CONC in the town of Cumberland, R.I., where they had been resident all the 2 CONC time. ...................... This paper ............ Being mainly 2 CONC genealogical, it does not attempt to give exhaustive biographical 2 CONC information, except in the account of the head of the family. For the 2 CONC sake of uniformity the final e in the surname, which was regularly used 2 CONC in early times, is omitted in the second and subsequent generations, 2 CONC although the writer contends that it should be assumed by all members of 2 CONC this particular family, as their identification mark, by virtue of 2 CONC historic right and privilege. In some branches it has always persisted. 2 CONC ..................... 2 CONT 1. CHAD BROWNE, the immigrant ancestor of the well-known Rhode Island 2 CONC family that forms the subject of this article, arrived in Boston in the 2 CONC early part of July 1638, in the ship Martin, accompanied by his wife 2 CONC Elizabeth and his son John, aged 8 years. His parentage and the date and 2 CONC place of his birth have not been discovered, but he married at High 2 CONC Wycombo, co. Bucks, England, 11 Sept. 1626, ELIZABETH SHARPAROWE, * who 2 CONC survived him and died probably about 1672. He died in or before 1663, 2 CONC being mentioned as 'deceased' in a deed from William Field of that year. 2 CONC ** 2 CONT On the voyage of the Martin to New England one of the 2 CONC passengers, Sylvester Baldwin of Aston Cointon, co. Bucks, died, having 2 CONC declared on 21 June his nuncupative will, which was proved on 13 July 2 CONC 1638 before Deputy Governor Dudley by the oaths of Chad Browne and three 2 CONC other men.*** This fixes the arrival of Chad Browne in New England as 2 CONC not later than 13 July 1638. In the same year he proceeded to 2 CONC Providence, where he was associated with Roger Williams, and was a signer 2 CONC of the famous Compact which denied religious interference in civil 2 CONC affairs. His name also appears in other agreements and compacts. In 2 CONC 1640 he was a member of a committee to consider the Colony bounds. He is 2 CONC at times called a surveyor. 2 CONT In 1642 he was ordained as pastor of the First Baptist Church 2 CONC of Providence, the mother church of that faith in America. Whether he 2 CONC was first or second pastor rests entirely on one's premises. He was 2 CONC certainly the first ordained pastor to continue in the office for a long 2 CONC period. Roger Williams's connection, as preacher, in this church was 2 CONC certainly brief, and is not clearly understood, owing to the loss of the 2 CONC early records. The oldest authority available is the 'History of the 2 CONC Baptists in America,' by Morgan Edwards, compiled about 1772. The author 2 CONC says: 2 CONT 'Williams was pastor from the establishment of the church until 2 CONC he left the Colony for England in 1643, and he then resigned it to 2 CONC Messrs. Brown and Wickenden. Mr. Chad Brown died between 1660 and 1665, 2 CONC leaving the church in charge of his colleague.' **** 2 CONT For a brief summary of Chad Browne's character one can do no 2 CONC better than to quote the remarks of Hague in his 'Historical Discourse' 2 CONC delivered at this church: 2 CONT 'Contemporary with Roger Williams, he possessed a cooler 2 CONC temperament, and was happily adapted to sustain the interests of religion 2 CONC just where that great man failed.... We know only enough of his character 2 CONC to excite the wish to know more; but from the little it is clear that he 2 CONC was highly esteemed as a man of sound judgment and of a Christian spirit. 2 CONC Often referred to as the arbitrator of existing differences, in a state 2 CONC of society where individual influence was needed as a substitute for well 2 CONC digest laws, he won that commendation which the Savior pronounced when he 2 CONC said, 'blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the 2 CONC children of God.' ' 2 CONT The home lot of Chad Browne was at the corner of the present 2 CONC Market Square and College Street i Providence, and Brown University now 2 CONC occupies part of that lot. He was buried on his own ground (a spot now 2 CONC occupied by the Court House), whence his remains were removed in 1792 to 2 CONC the North Burial Ground, where the gravestone then erected may still be 2 CONC seen, with the following inscription: 2 CONT In memory of Chad Brown Elder of the Baptist Church in this 2 CONC town. He was one of the original Proprietors of the Providence Purchase 2 CONC having been exiled from Massachusetts for Conscience Sake. He had five 2 CONC sons John, James, Jeremiah, Chad and Daniel. Who have left a numerous 2 CONC Posterity. He died about A.D. 1665. This Monument was erected by the 2 CONC Town of Providence. 2 CONT Chad Browne left a will, as is shown by references in deeds, 2 CONC but its contents are unknown to us. The year 1672 witnessed a general 2 CONC readjustment of his estate, caused most probably by the death of his 2 CONC widow near that time, lands being thus released which the conveyances 2 CONC state had been left to her by her husband and were to revert to his sons 2 CONC after her death. The records of the Town of Providence mention a Chad 2 CONC Brown as present at the drawing of various land allotments at intervals 2 CONC from 1675 to 1683, but whether they refer to the first Chad Browne's son 2 CONC of the same name or were drawn by the proxy in his own right of ancient 2 CONC holdings is not clear. Chad Browne, Sr., owned large parcels of land in 2 CONC the present Glocester, Scituate, and Johnston. There appears no record 2 CONC otherwise of this son Chad, except the reference on his father's 2 CONC gravestone. 2 CONT Abundant proof is on record of the paternity of the three sons 2 CONC John, Jeremiah, and James. There appears no definite statement relating 2 CONC to the son Daniel, but he has always been considered by all authorities a 2 CONC son of Chad Browne, and the use of the name Chad among his descendants 2 CONC seems to substantiate the fact. No mention appears of daughters. Two 2 CONC peculiarities are noted in the study of this family, the infrequent use 2 CONC of the name of its founder among his descendants and the very prompt 2 CONC abandonment of their fathers' faith by the majority of his near kindred. 2 CONC Two of his sons became devoted adherents of the Church of England and 2 CONC many of his descendants at a later interval were Quakers. 2 CONT Children, all except the first probably born at Providence. 2 CONC ***** 2 CONT 2. i. John, b. in England about 1629. 2 CONT 3. ii. James 2 CONT 4. iii. Jeremiaha. 2 CONT iv. Judah. The Friends' Records of Newport contain the following 2 CONC entry: 'Judah Brown the son of Chad Brown of Providence in the Colony of 2 CONC Rhode Island he dyed at Newport and was buried in the place given by 2 CONC Thomas Clifton upon 16 d: 3 mo: 1663.' 2 CONT 5. v. Daniel. 2 CONT vi. Chad. He is regarded by 'The Chad Browne Memorial' as 2 CONC identical with Judah; but the two names do not seem interchangeable. 2 CONT * The marriage is given in the parish registers of High Wycombe as 2 CONC that of 'Chaddus Browne & Elis. Sharparowe.' (Register, vol. 65, p. 84. 2 CONC from Phillimore's Buckhamshire Parish Registers, Marriages, vol. 6, p. 2 CONC 11.) 2 CONT ** The assumption that his death occurred as early as 1650, because an 2 CONC unidentified Widow Brown appears in a tax list of 2 Sept. of that year, 2 CONC is of no moment, considering that several other Borwns, contemporary with 2 CONC him are found in early records in Providence. 2 CONT *** Savage, Genealogical Dictionary, vol. I, p. 105; The Chad Browne 2 CONC Memorial, p.7. 2 CONT **** The 'Historical Catalogue of the First Baptist Church in 2 CONC Providence,' by Henry King, 1908, considers Williams as the founder and 2 CONC first pastor. 2 CONT ***** It is singular that Chad Browne brought but one child with him 2 CONC from England. Presumably several other children besides John were born 2 CONC in England between 1626 and 1638, and either died young or were left 2 CONC behind in the mother country." 2 CONT 2 CONT 2] SOURCE: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/cemetery051.html 2 CONC 19 January 2003 2 CONT BROWN CHAD - 1665 PV001 2 CONT http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/descript03.html 19 2 CONC January 2003 2 CONT PV001 NORTH BURIAL GROUND PROVIDENCE NORTH MAIN ST ->20 2 CONC ft.
