2 CONC his family life.  He might have met Elizabeth on his travels as sussex is 
2 CONC the next county round the coast or she might have been already resident 
2 CONC in Ramsgate. (there was a William Apps living near the Atwells in the 
2 CONC 1841 census-? Elizabeths brother).  Elizabeth describes herself as a 
2 CONC launderess in the 1861 census.

2 CONC family. I'm afraid this is going to be another long posting so bear with 
2 CONC me, I have turned up some information you will be interested in.  I am 
2 CONC fairly sure that our families are related as I found this family amongst 
2 CONC my notes  :
2 CONT 1841 census for Ramsgate:

2 CONT (all chidren born in Ramsgate)  As you will see, this family corresponds 
2 CONC pretty much with the family you turned up in the Ancestral file. 
2 CONT                There was another family of Atwells in the census with  a 
2 CONC child Sarah born in 1837. That was John's brother William (who was a 
2 CONC shoemaker) and his wife Ann, but as you know that a John Atwell and his 
2 CONC family moved to the states at some time, John and Mary seem to be the 
2 CONC right couple. If this Sarah was your Sarah, (I can tell you how to go 
2 CONC about that shortly), it seems that after her daughter went to the states 
2 CONC with her family, john and Sarah followed on with their own family and by 
2 CONC 1920 uncle Richard was left living with Elizabeth Jane and her family.
2 CONT                It will interest you to know that John and Mary were 
2 CONC living at Garden Row, Bellevue Hill Ramsgate. I made a note that the 
2 CONC enumerators writing was not good and the Garden Row is how I deciphered 
2 CONC it. There is still a Bellevue Road in Ramsgate.  (You should note that 
2 CONC the 1841 census in Britain was the first official census and the ages of

2 CONC great-grandfather Stephen Henry Atwell. Stephen was the youngest 
2 CONC surviving son of Richard and Elizabeth (APPS) Atwell's 14 children. In 
2 CONC fact although Stephen Henry was Sarah's uncle, he was only 3 years old 
2 CONC when she was born as John was so much older. In 1841 Stephen Henry was 
2 CONC living with His parents and the younger members of the family in an area 
2 CONC of Ramsgate known as Hereson (I think at one time it was a separate 
2 CONC settlement) this is near to the Bellevue Rd area of Ramsgate.

2 CONC Poppins!)  It's possible that this is how John relatives pronounced it

2 CONT How exciting. I think the circumstantial evidence poits to this being the 
2 CONC correct family, but there do seem to be a few discrepancies. 
2 CONT Here are my initial thoughts: 
2 CONT 1) Elias is definitely a male name, (one of my Great grandmothers ,Ellen 
2 CONC FRIEND, had a brother called Elias)
2 CONT 2) Ann referred to as "wife". Might this refer to her as being a 
2 CONC "housewife" or housekeeper rather than traditional use of wife?.
2 CONT 3) Thomas. I noticed that in the 1860 census, there was a Thomas PEDMER 
2 CONC living with the Atwells in the U.S. He is aged 17. Might they have 
2 CONC "adopted" a Thomas in U.K.prior to sailing. I'm probably barking up the 
2 CONC wrong tree- but it's a different angle to consider.
2 CONT 4) Liverpool had (and still does) a very large population of Irish , so I 
2 CONC guess a large number of the passengers leaving from that port would be 
2 CONC Irish (though evidently, not all.) 
2 CONT                I will be able to help from this end by trying to find any 
2 CONC origins of Elias and Thomas Atwell. They would both have been born 
2 CONC post-registration which means there should be record of their births to 
2 CONC ascertain parentage, or whether they came from Kent at all.It will take 
2 CONC me a few weeks though. I will also see if this Thomas Pedmer has any 
2 CONC obvious link to the Atwell family.

2 CONT So, it seems that when Stephens career as a coastguard ended, he was 
2 CONC employed by his old regiment as a nurse-not a good career move as he may 
2 CONC well have contracted smallpox from one of his patients.
2 CONT There is a wealth of information that I could find out about Stephens 
2 CONC carreer with the marines. I very much hope to get up to the Public Record 
2 CONC Office at Kew sometime this summer. It's only about 2 hours
2 CONT drive away but its so difficult to fit it in with everyone else's 
2 CONC commitments. I can hardly wait though.
2 CONT I was surprised to find that Stephen ended up as a nurse. Two of my aunts 
2 CONC were nurses and three of my cousins were nurses. I also started training 
2 CONC as a nurse before I decided to go into lab.work but I've
2 CONT always worked in hospitals.

2 CONT When Amelia Sarah was born, Stephen was a coastguard living in the 
2 CONC coastguard cottages at Deal. When the youngest were born they were living 
2 CONC in Griffin street Deal and he was still a coastguard. In the 1871 census 
2 CONC he descibes himself as a "Naval pensioner" and they were living in 
2 CONC Dolphin street (all houses are  are still there). Something must have 
2 CONC happened between 1869 and 1871 that made him unfit for work. I now know 
2 CONC that he died in 1872 aged only 39 and I am awiting the death certificate 
2 CONC to learn more. The names of the youngest boys also point to having a 
2 CONC naval career before he settled in the coastguard service as Alma and 
2 CONC Inkermann were battles of the Crimean War. Deal has a maritime museum 
2 CONC which I hope to visit sometime this week as coastguards would be quite 
2 CONC high profile characters in the fishing community,I might find something.
