Stillwater Volunteer Connect

Stillwater Volunteer Connect will be an online connection for community members searching for volunteers to assist in all areas of need. This will be primarily an online communication resource; but we are planning on using youth from a local shelter/American Legion-type situation to help make connections that are too difficult for the computer program. They will also assist in contacting the non-profits and community members to gather research date for the project.

The following groups have agreed to have their information posted on our web page.

1. Alcoholics Anonymous:

Purpose and services: Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcholics achieve sobriety.

Eligibility requirements: An honest desire to stop drinking.

Fees: None

Hours: Call the above number for meeting times.

2. American Red Cross - Payne County Chapter

Purpose and services: The Red Cross operates within a flexible framework of humanitarian concern to meet the multiple needs of the American people. Red Cross services have formal names.

Services to the Armed Forces and Veterans - contact between family and military.

Blood Services - to ensure a safe blood supply; blood center located in-house.

Health Services - water safety, CPR, first aid, baby-sitting, HIV/AIDS, youth programs, etc.

Disaster Services - single family as well as large disaster.

International Services - see below

Community Volunteer Services - providing volunteers for projects both Red Cross and community sponsored.

International Services involves sending volunteers to other countries to work in disasters, wars, humane needs, and to provide communication for families who live in our country while their family lives in a war-torn country. We also are involved in local projects that are unique only to our community. We provide volunteers in many different areas.

Fees: Fees apply to some health and safety classes only. Other service provided free of charge.

Hours: 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Blood center - Tuesday 12pm to 6pm and Friday - 8 am to 1 pm

3. BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS of STILLWATER, INC.

Purposes and services: Big Brothers Big Sisters aims to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth by nuturing professionally-supported one-to-one mentoring relationships between children and adults.

Elgibility requirements: Services are available for children at risk between the ages of 5 and 17. Volunteers must be 18 or older and available for at least an academic year. All volunteers are carefully screened.

Fees: There is no charge for services.

Hours: Office hours - 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.

Application procedure: Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters office located directly behind Wal-Mart.

Source of support: Annual Bowl for Kids' Sake and Frontier Rotary auction fundraisers, private contributors, and Stillwater United Way.

4. Birth Choice of Stillwater, Inc.

Birth choice considers that human life, given by the Creator, is sacred from conception and deserves devoted respect and care at every stage.

Purpose and services: Birth Choice is an unplanned pregnancy service that is a non-secretarian, non-political, totally volunteer group that offers free confidential pregnancy tests. We provide viable alternatives to abortion and help for pregnant women, infants, and small children.

Birth Choice exists to give loving aid to distressed girls and women who are experiencing a problem pregnancy so that these women may transmit the gift of life to their children and find healing and enhancement of their own lives.

Fees: None

Age group: Pregnant women and children up to age two.

Source of support: We rely completely on donations.

4. Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency

Purpose and services: This is a county wide, self-help organizaiton designed to assist low-income people in self-help efforts. A few of the services offered to low income people are: VIP (Very Important Paitent) program; Mission of Hope shelter for the homeless; anti-poverty programs such as food, weatherization, emergency services, and employment counseling. Community Action develops self-help programs for low-income families. COCAA assists with medical through Stillwater Community Health Center.

Elgibility requirements: Must meet income guidelines, which vary somewhat from program to program.

Fees: None

Hours: 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday by appointment only. Closed 12 pm to 1 pm.

Application procedure: Call 624-2533 and ask for information.

Source of support: Federal and state CSBG Grants and local contributions.

Appointment required. Will need to verify employability, Social Security card, and a photo ID. Utility and Rent help only once a year. Food bank - once every three months.

5. Stillwater Life Services, Inc.

Purpose and services: Free pregnancy testing, pregnancy consultations; education about abortion and alternatives; post-abortion support; "Bridges to Motherhood" and "Effective Fathering" parenting classes offering friendship, emotional support, and practical assistance; Baby Boutique with diapers, clothes, and other maternity and baby items that can be earned by getting involved with parenting programs; information about and referrals for community resources, medical assistance, legal advice, financial assistance, and post-abortion support group.

Elgibility requirements: None.

Fees: All help is free and confidential.

Hours: 12 pm to 5 pm Monday through Friday and by volunteer availablity.

Application procedure: Call the helpline at 624-3332 to set up an appointment. Walk-ins are also accepted. Source of support: Individual donor support.
