FLETCHER FAMILY

I hope my work in the compiling all of our family history into a record will be used and enjoyed for generations to come. My research has been extensive and interesting to say the lest. Many long hours of research and frustration have been spent scouring the Tulsa County Library Genealogical Department, Vital Statistics Records, Oklahoma Cemeteries, family correspondence, Ancestry and Rootsweb.com. Thanks to all those who have assisted me in making this search a little easier.

This site is dedicated to the memory of my mother.

She aways wanted to know her family's history.

SHIRLEY ANN (GRIGSBY) KAUFFMAN

1934 - 1986

William H. Fletcher was born about 1828 in Arkansas. His parents are unknown but both were born in Tennessee.

He married Martha Couch, of Warren County Tennessee, sometime around 1850-1853 in probable Johnson County, Arkansas. Martha's father moved from Warren County, Tennessee between 1850 and 1860 and settled in Johnson County, Arkansas. Martha Couch was born about 1829 in White or Warren County, Tennessee to Samuel and Goldie (Denton) Couch.

After William and Martha married they moved to Missouri where they lived for for a couple of years and had their oldest daugther. They moved to Arkansas prior to 1856 and then moved back to Missouri between 1858 and 1860, and back again to Arkansas in Newton County by 1870. It is not known why the Fletchers moved back and forth between Arkansas and Missouri as they did.

William is said to have served in the Civil war and to date no records have been found to prove this. One family story told is William died 20 miles from home while returning from the war. However, I think as time has past a few important facts have been forgotten in the story or the twist of the story is he made it back from the war just to die 20 miles from home, perhaps on his way to town.

William's death is not know but calculated to be between 1864 and 1870 and probably taking place in Arkansas. His youngest son was born in 1864, and his widow and family can be found living in Newton County, Arkansas in 1870 near her two brothers William and James "Polk" Couch. It is not known what happen to Martha after 1870.

Two of William's sons and possibly one daughter moved to Indian Territory. Samuel Eli, born Feb 1860/61 in Missouri and died September of 1916 in Haskell County, Oklahoma. He married Rachel Giles of Georgia prior to 1891 when they're daughter, Martha, was born in Indian Territory. Rachel (Giles) Fletcher died in the fall of 1900 while burning corn stalks. She is buried in Lona Valley Cemetery with Samuel under the 105+ year old Cedar Tree Samuel planted in honor of Rachel.

Samuel remarried to Mrs. Anna Evelyn Chasteen Gage December 1, 1905 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory where both were residing in Quinton township.

Samuel died in September of 1916 having a heart attach while leaving a Baptist Tent Revival. He is buried along side his first wife, Rachel and his son, Chester, from his second marriage, as well as his brother, William Levi(n)and his two sons, Perry and George. There is also a possible member of the Couch family buried in this same cemetery.

William Levi(n), son of William H., who moved to Indian Territory shows up as early as 1894 when he marries Margaret Yarber December 2, 1894 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory with both residing in Whitefield township (now Haskell County, Oklahoma). William was born about 1858 in Missouri or Arkansas and died in Haskell County, Oklahoma where he is buried near his brother Samuel Eli. There have been no records found on William Levi(n)'s wife and children after 1910.

There also have been no records found on William's daughter, M. Arkansas, who also moved to Indian Territory after 1870. In the 1900 census living with Samuel is William Harmon, nephew, born October 1883 in Indian Territory. William gives his mother's place of birth to be Missouri and father is unknown. Samuel Eli's oldest daughter, M. Arkansas, was born in Missouri according to the census of 1860 and the younger sister in Arkansas. This leads me to believe that William Harmon is the son of M. Arkansas Fletcher who married a Harmon.

With M. Arkansas (Fletcher) Harmon living in Indian Territory by 1883, the Fletcher siblings may all have settled in Indian Territory, between 1870 and 1880.

The two children unaccounted for are James and Mary A. There is a James Fletcher in the 1900 census for Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, born about 1863/4, who could possibly be the son of William H. This James didn't live to far from brothers, Samuel E. and William L.
