Welcome to On The Fly's official web-site.

If you're a beginning fly tier or interested in the hobby, you've came to the right place.  Our goal is to present an informative site regarding the tools used to create these tiny mystical objects that sometimes cause frustration and yet, an unbelievable excitement when your fly line gets stretched with your first fish on a fly you've tied.

If you're interested in beginning to tying, the question in your mind is probably something like "OK, how do I get started".  Well, the answer to that question depends largely upon you and your situation.  For instance, if you have a friend or a local fly tying shop, by all means visit them.  There's nothing quite like watching an experienced tier navigate the hackle around a hook.  Many fly tying shops will even help teach you some of the basics of tying (with the hope you'll buy some of their equipment and materials).  One word of caution.  It's likely that many of the fellow fly tiers you meet have been tying for several years.  As a result, they will make the process look very easy and will be able to tie several fly's in the time it takes for you to tie one.  Your first results probably won't be as pretty or as quick as your mentors.  After attempting your first fly, don't be discouraged.  While your first fly may not be the prettiest one in the box, that doesn't mean it won't catch fish.  After all, the purpose of most  flies is to mimic an insect -- how many insects floating on the surface of the water have you looked at and said "Man, is that one beautiful bug or what!"?  Not many, I'd venture.

If you're not fortunate enough to have such experts available, hopefully this site will be of some value to you.  In the upcoming months, we'll be posting beginner's fly tying tutorials.  In the interim, the Tie1On website has an awesome tutorial.

Thank you for visiting our site, and if you have any questions, drop us a line (pun intended) at onthefly@cableone.net or fill out our feedback form.
