MVP's 2002 NFL Mock Draft

Updated on 3-10-02

41 More Days till the 2002 NFL Draft

Important Dates to Remember

April 20th and 21st: NFL Draft, Madison Square Garden, New York

1. - David Carr -Fresno State--- According to some reports, David Carr had a so-so combine work out. He has yet to have his private workout yet so there is no reason for the Texans to suddenly lose interest in him. A trade down makes sense but there doesn’t appear to be a team out there right now that would be willing to pay the necessary money to move up and get the player they want.

2. - Julius Peppers – North Carolina--- All reports are so far that the Panthers are very interested in Julius Peppers, I do think however this could be part of a ploy to make a team that wants peppers sweat and cause them to trade up for him. The panthers have a couple needs and probably wouldn’t mind moving down to get the player they want. However they could be content with Peppers at #2 and appear to be in a win-win situation with the 2nd pick in the draft.

3. - Joey Harrington- Oregon--- Detroit has lately been rumored to be interested in a QB or a Defensive back. The lions have many options and at this point before the draft I will take their word that they are in-fact interested in Harrington.

4. - Bryant McKinnie- Miami--- The bills have been on record saying that they question the work ethic and desire of McKinnie but again I see this as a ploy to confuse teams of their real interest, the NFL draft is all about who you can trick and manipulate to get who you really want. McKinnie hasn’t allowed a sack in two years at Miami and all indications from scouts is that he is the next “good one” and is a safe bet. I’m betting the Bills are bluffing.

5. - Mike Williams- Texas--- Williams did not have a very happy weekend at the combine. He supposedly has a knee injury that could take some time to rehab. If that is the case some teams might shy away from him. Until more details are known about the injury I’ll assume that he is still one of the top players in this draft due to his ability. Williams supposedly had this injury during the season and played without problems. Stay tuned on Williams

6. - Quentin Jammer- Texas--- The cowboys would probably like to move down in the draft unless Jammer is still around at their pick. He fills a void that they’ve had since Deion Sanders left.

7. - Roy Williams - Oklahoma--- The Vikings lost some key members to their defense over the last couple years. Randle, Rudd, Wong, Griffith are just some of the losses they have suffered. Tice has a plan and what could be better for a plan than to find a Safety who can lead the defense for years to come. Eases the loss of defensive leader Robert Griffith

8. - Wendell Bryant- Wisconsin--- The chiefs failed on their efforts to sign Parrella as he ended up in Oakland. The Chiefs are rumored to be after a WR but their need on defense is far greater.

9. - Albert Haynesworth- Tennessee--- The Jaguars recently lost some key members of their team to the Texans. The jaguars will go after DL help because the premier Offensive Line guys are already off the board. A trade down would suit the Jaguars well

10. - Phillip Buchanon- Miami--- The Bengals recently came out and said that they would take the best available player and wouldn’t reach for a player. Fortunately for them Buchanon is there and happens to be a need and the best available player for them at this point.

11. -John Henderson- Tennessee--- Dungy hasn’t made it a secret that he needs to upgrade the Colts defense. I look for the colts to take the best available player on defense and at this point it is Henderson who would have gone higher had it not been for questions about his back. Teams are worried about his “curved spine” and could cause him to fall a bit in the draft.

12. - Jeremy Shockey- Miami--- The Cardinals need a TE in the worst way. If they are serious about building a contender they need to show they are committed to upgrading all aspects of their team. I say they need to do that because next year David Boston becomes a free agent might not want to stick around if he is not happy.

13. - Ryan Sims- North Carolina--- The saints recently traded Ricky Williams for a first round pick this year because they had Deuce McCalister waiting in the wings. They now have the luxury of taking care of two needs in round one. Sims makes perfect sense because they’re poised to lose La’Roi Glover in free agency.

14. - Edward Reed- Miami --- Reed.would be a welcomed addition to the Titans secondary and would more than likely come in and be a starter. Titans have some major talent on defense and just need to add some depth.

15. - Daniel Graham- Colorado--- Giants made it very clear they wanted a TE when they went after Shannon Sharpe in free agency. If they are unable to land Sharpe look for them to address the TE spot in the draft. Graham had a great combine and improved his stock greatly.

16. - Ashley Lelie- Hawaii--- It appears that the Browns will not be trading for a RB. I look for the browns to get a RB in free agency, Lamar Smith, Garrison Hearst, or Michael Pittman. If they were unable to agree to terms with a RB I’d look for them to go after T.J. Duckett. For now I’m betting they try to get some young weapons around Couch and the draft is full of WRs that could help.

17. - Kalimba Edwards--- I expect the Falcons to try to upgrade their DL and WR positions in the draft. The RB position can easily be upgraded in FA or round two for the falcons because there is a large # of talented RBs, Duckett, Green, Foster, Portis to name a few. I expect the Falcons to take a play maker on defense and Edwards is just that, a playmaker.

18. - Jabar Gaffney- Florida--- They need a QB so there could be a trade up or they could trade this pick for Brunell, Bledsoe etc. If they decide to stay where they are look for them to add the best WR available. Spurrier has been bringing in ex gators and was in pursuit of another WR from florida on the Giants. He was unsuccessful and if Gaffney is around look for Spurrier to take him in a heartbeat

19. - Donte Stallworth- Tennessee--- Denver needs WR help and adding Donte Stallworth helps out their WR core greatly. The Broncos have one of the best offenses in the NFL when healthy and adding Stallworth can only help. Depth at WR was a big problem for the Broncos last year. Stallworth will ease the mind of Shanahan whose #2 WR is still trying to recover from a broken leg, (McCaffrey).

20. - Jeremy Stevens- Washington --- Complete TE that will fit in well with Holmgren. Mike Holmgrens teams had the most success when the TE had an impact on the game. Stevens can play the role that Chmura played in green bay, Hopefully without the controversy though for Stevens sake. If Holmgren finds a TE in free agency look for a WR or DL help at this spot.

21. - Anthony Weaver- Notre Dame--- The raiders have a lot of options on day one. They can fill a lot of needs when they choose to. Assuming they do not trade help on the defensive line is needed. Especially with Darrell Russell suspended for a year.

22. -Mike Rumph-Miami--- The Jets lost significant contributors during the expansion draft in order to clear cap room. I look for the Jets to ease the loss of those players by taking younger less expensive players. Also do not forget the Texans probably had some kind of agreement on a future trade because of the amount of salary they took off their team to get the Jets under the cap. Keep that in the back of your mind.

23. - T.J. Duckett- Michigan State--- The raiders now can take the best player they feel is on the board. The Raiders have the luxury of having multiple picks so adding Duckett to their offense to add stability makes sense.

24. - Dwight Freeney- Syracuse --- The ravens are going to need to revamp basically their entire defensive line Freeney falls right into their laps and he is a good player to start rebuilding your DL with. Could also choose to go with Ed Reed at this point in the draft if he is around.

25. - Lito Sheppard- Florida--- The saints have the luxury of two first round picks this year. Sheppard fills a big need at CB and the Saints are very happy with getting what they got in the first round.

26. - Javon Walker- Florida State--- The Eagles have made it clear they aren’t satisfied with Duce. I expect them to lure Dunn from Tampa. That leaves WR as a spot that could use an upgrade. Javon Walker had a great 40 time and with his size and strength someone will take a chance on him in the first round.

27. - Michael Lewis- Colorado --- The 49ers need to keep building their defense. The 49ers could add a CB instead or even another LB to bolster their defense. Haynesworth is the best DL player left on the board and the 49ers are ecstatic to find a player of his Caliber on the board at pick 27.

28. - Napoleon Harris- Northwestern --- The packers took a big step in upgrading their WR core by trading for Terry Glenn. They now can take the best available player and avoid picking for need. Harris has been eyed by the packers for some time now and would provide some much needed depth at the LB spot if the packers are unable to upgrade it during free agency. Antonio Bryant and Josh Reed will see some serious consideration at this pick. As would Lito Sheppard if he was around.

29. - Charles Grant- Georgia --- Pass Rush is the one thing that the bears defense was missing. Grant has recently upgraded his draft stock at the combine. Bears would be happy to add more talent to their above average defense.

30. - Larry Tripplett- Washington --- Steelers like quick guys who can get off the line quickly. Tripplett would add another dimension to one of the best defense in the league already. Could look for a WR to team with Ward and P. Burris

31. - Josh Reed WR- LSU --- The rams are not looking to sign Cris Carter at this time and recently lost Az Hakim in free agency. The rams take Josh Reed and provide themselves a with a fine #3 option at WR. Rams offense with Reed wouldn’t lose a step. In fact it will take another step up.

32. - Marquis Walker WR- Michigan--- The Patriots recently lost Glenn in a trade. Adding someone with size at the WR position makes sense. Antonio Bryant is more gifted than Walker but after having a bad experience with Glenn and Antonio Bryants shady past, the Patriots take the safe pick and make Walker their possession receiver.
