JAMES  MAITLAND  LAUDERDALE

who came to Virginia

There seem to be two different James Maitland Lauderdales. Please note here to avoid confusion

AS YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET CONFUSED as :

The other James Maitland Lauderdale and wife Mary Turner Lombe had daughter Sarah Elizabeth Lauderdale B. 1740 at Thirlestane Castle.  ( People tend to get Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale mixed up with Sarah Elizabeth Lauderdale. who was William's daughter--the granddaughter of the James Maitland Lauderdale who was living in VA.

There is a James  Maitland  Lauderdale born 1690 Berwick Calammoor Lauderdale Scotland to John Maitland Lauderdale and Margaret Cunningham There is another  Frederick (one b 1722 at "Lauderdale Berwick Scotland to Charles and Maitland and Elizabeth Ogilvby. This seems to be where people get confused.

In the US there was a James Maitland Lauderdale Sr, James Maitland Jr and it appears that William (born 1711) also had a son named James. And there may be a 4th.

The Castle tells us  the James Maitland Lauderdale who came to the US while not  directly descended from counts of Thirlestane they are all related.

Could JAMES MAITLAND LAUDERDALE (the immigrant) be Isaac Maitlen's father?

Lauderdales in the USA are mainly descended from James Maitland who originated in Galloway in south-west Scotland and migrated to Ulster before moving to Pennsylvania in the American colonies in 1714. At some stage he changed his name to Lauderdale, and founded a distinguished American pioneer family of that name. Fort Lauderdale, and a number of American counties are directly linked with the family.

in the UK says-Lauderdale first appears in the records as a family name in Scotland in 1737, with the baptism of Jean Lauderdale at Beith in Ayr, the daughter of James Lauderdale.

James Maitland Lauderdale (Jr or Sr?) died  Augusta Co, VA in 1796!!  One record shows he was born before 1725 and died before 1796 in Sumner Co Tn . James Maitland Lauderdale was married to Sarah Mills who was born in 1723 Botetourt County, Virgina.  a son William born 1711 in Galloway Scotland who married ? Dunham .

This James Maitland Lauderdale's son William had a daughter Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale who married a man with the last name of Green. People tend to get Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale mixed up with Sarah Elizabeth Lauderdale.

James Maitland Lauderdale Sr who came to America in 1714 had William (b. 1711 in Galloway Scotland), James Maitland Lauderdale Jr, John and 4 more sons plus daughters Elizabeth "Susan" Lauderdale who married William Martin, and Sarah and Jane.

William and (wife)  Dunham, had a son James (is this a third James?) Born 1760 Botetorut Co, Va. Was it William who married Nancy about 1745 Sumner Tn. He died 12 Nov 1817 Rhea Cty. (Was it William who had a daughter Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale who married __Green . She died 1785 Davidson Co, TN

Isaac was born in VA in 1781. Was his dad James JR?

  a son James Lauderdale b. 1744/1755 Botetourt, VA (??) Is this a 4th
James? This date is not the same as the one for Williams son.

James Maitland Lauderdale (Jr ) m. Jean Sutherland Gordan. They had a dtr Virginia(??)  Elizebeth Lauderdale b. 1730 Augusta Co , VA.  m. Lewis J. Green SR (whom Daniel Boone told about being attacked by the bear and left for dead) She d. 1805.

There was a James Lauderdale born about 1730 D 1789 Bou. (Which James?)Is this a 5th James??

Which was it Sarah or Elizabeth who may have died and who died in 1785 in Davidson Co, TN

James may have had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth or Sarah or Elizabeth  something close to that , Lauderdale who died in 1785 in Davidson Co, TN (Which which James?)

One of them may have also had a daughter named Jean Lauderdale??

Elizabeth Lauderdale B. 1699 who is he

There was a Fredrick Maitland (b. Hollywick, Sussex England in 1763) which would make him about 18 when Isaac was born could be a brother but it would make him 18 yrs older than Isaac and he was b. in England not Scotland.

Jack St Clair  4905 College St  Albuqerque, NM 87120 might be a good contact as he had submitted info.

http://www.familysearch.org
has the spelling of  Isaac and our other ancestors last name as Maitland and his dad as James Maitland Lauderdale .

In Bedford City, VA born in 1790 was an Elizabeth Maitland whose dad was Frederick Maitland. She married  George St. Clair. Feb 4, 1815 (It says she and her husband died in London, England.)

Elizabeth Agnes Maitland born 1793 Petersburg, VA to David Maitland (David was born in 1759 in Barcaple, Scotland but he was in VA in 1788 when he married Susanna Poythress from VA. at Prince Geo, VA

Could David  be related to Catherine Maitland Burnley? (Note that Catherine married in 1759 in VA, the same year that David was born in Scotland.)

Catherine Maitland born approx 1738 in VA. She married a Harden or Hardin  Burnley in 1759 in VA.  Could she be a sister to Frederick Maitland  born 24 May 1730 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland   Frederick married Margaret Dick about 1753 in Scotland... Coud she be a sister to JAmes Maitland Lauderdale? Or a sister to Isaac?

So if Catherine and Frederick are  siblings then Frederick could be Isaac's dad...and James and Jean  could be Frederick's parents  and Isaac's grandparents. No I think James is his dad

Since Catherine was born 1738 a brother or cousin could be born in 1730.Could Frederick a brother to  Elizabeth's  who was (born in 1790 in VA) and Isaac's who was (born in 1791) . Would Eliz Isaac and James Jr be siblings?

The Maitland website in the UK says-Lauderdale first appears in the records as a family name in Scotland in 1737, with the baptism of Jean Lauderdale at Beith in Ayr, the daughter of James Lauderdale. (Wasn't his wife's name also Jean? If this is all correct then Fredericks wife would be  would be Margaret Dick

His dad about 1699 Sumner Co TN?

James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart (yes, the actor) had the same name as his grandfather. (Not sure where they got the Maitland.
