Central Nervous System Diseases

 

           

Amnesia

This is a fairly well known disease where the victim is unable to recall memories, past experience, or even their own identity.

Alzheimer’s disease

It typically affects those entering into old age.  Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a loss of cells from the cerebral cortex and parts of the limbic system.  It is a degenerative disorder and also referred to as presenile dementia.

Aphasia

Aphasia is caused by damage to the language areas of the cerebral cortex of the brain.  As a result of this damage, language skills are often lost.  This can be the loss of the ability to express words, or the loss of language comprehension.

Apraxia

Apraxia is caused by a block in the neural pathways that contain the knowledge of learned movement patterns.  This causes a loss of common motor movements such a brushing hair, getting dressed, or brushing teeth.  These activities are unable to be preformed despite the victim’s desire and physical ability to perform said actions.

Ataxia

Ataxia is a disease with many causes, among them being cerebellar injury.  As a result, the victim undergoes a partial to complete loss of voluntary actions.

Cerebrovascular accident (CAV)

 

 

 

The most prevalent cause of neurological disability in Western countries is cerebrovascular accident, or stroke.  It is caused by the presence of a blocked blood vessel.  This results in a lack of blood to the brain.  It can also be caused by hemorrhaic injury to the brain, thrombosis, embolism, or hemorrhage.

Coma

 

A unconscious state that a victim cannot be woken even when given a potent stimulus.  It is characterized by an unarousable unresponsiveness

Concussion of the brain

Concussion of the brain is a loss of conciseness due to a blow to the head with the possibility of retrograde amnesia.  This results in a temporary loss of higher mental functions. Edema is the main cause of many affect of concussion of the brain.

Cerebral Palsy

This is a broad term applicable to a number of different motor diseases.  These diseases typically occur at birth and result from damage to the Central Nervous System.  The diseases classified under the term Cerebral palsy are involve the loss of voluntary movement.

Cerebritis is inflammation of the brain when caused by bacterial means

Glioma

Glioma is a neoplasm of the brain or spinal cord, it consists of a tumor of glioma cells

Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia is paralysis on either the right or left side of the body

Huntington’s chorea

Huntington’s chorea is often referred to as Huntington’s disease.  It is a genetic disease that begins in adulthood. Huntington’s chorea is characterized by a quick deterioration of mental functions and uncontrollable jerky movements.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a disease with no known cause that causes victims to fall asleep uncontrollably

Encephalitis

Encephalitis is the inflammation of the brain, only when referring to inflammation caused by viral origins.
