A Charm to Reveal Truth among Flase Appearances
When a young fowl has been roasted and eaten, take the carcass all its bones,
and boil these for six hours until the flesh shall slip away. Futher scrub the bones clean,
freeing each rib and joint from its fastenings, and then let all lie on a paper in the sun until they are quite dry and white.
When these bones are so prepared, place them in a box of black wood and set it before a single white candle.
Gaze into the flame, while considering earnestly all manifestations of what situation from which you would draw the truth.
When all these various aspects have arisen before your eyes, take from the box a bone, and inscribe it in India ink one possible truth.
Next take others, and write uopn them the other truths you have envisioned. Then before the candle,
set out all the bones in a row, and say this over them:
"Beneath the flesh of confusion, Behold the bones of that which is true,
Still all save one are false, And must deceive where the spirit's eye is shut:
Yet open now that eye, and the true bone shall rise revealed.
Replace the inscribed bones in the box, and also all others that remain unmarked and shake the box to mix them well.
Then with the eyes shut, draw from within one bone, on which shall be written the single truth.
If it should bear no inscription, all of the supposed truths are false,
and the situation must be studied in a new light after a fortnight has passed.
Whatever bone was drawn forth, it should this day be hung from a cord in some window
where the sun will cast its shadow upon an opposite wall. Let it remain there,
serving to charm the brain and eye to clear vision therafter, in all instances of concealment or confusion.
