The Desert Diamond
The Desert Diamond, also known as the Saudi Diamond, is an extremely high-grade quartz and is considered a semi-precious stone in the same category as an amethyst or citrine. It is found in diamond fields near Riyadh. To the naked eye, this completely natural stone is indistinguishable from a carbon-based diamond and shares many attributes, namely that it is a very clear and very stable stone that will not crack or become dull or lose its clarity over time. In contrast, cubic zirconia is manufactured in a laboratory. It is a synthetic and merely mimics the appearance of a natural stone, but does not maintain its strength or clarity over time. It may become brittle and crack, as well as lose its luster, becoming milky, over time. What about the durability and clarity of the Desert Diamond: Will it crack or become dull over the years? When compared to a carbon diamond, as far as hardness and resistance to scratching, the desert diamond is awarded a Mohs scale rating of 7.0 – 7.5 on a scale of 10. It is, therefore, very durable and will maintain its qualities, unlike cubic zirconia which may become discolored and brittle with age. Desert diamonds are individually hand cut, precisely in the manner of a carbon diamond or any other precious or semi-precious stone. Because they are natural semi-precious stones, Desert Diamonds are available in all ranges of quality and clarity, exactly like a carbon diamond. Carbon diamonds are measured by weight: the carat. Desert Diamonds are from the quartz family and are, therefore, slightly heavier than their carbon neighbor. But you may still describe your desired Desert Diamond stone in terms of the true carbon diamond carat weight when you request information on prices over the phone. Simply state that you are using the carat “size and appearance” of the carbon diamond and you would like a similarly-sized Desert Diamond, as far as outward size appearance.
